Mariners general manager Justin Hollander met with reporters this afternoon to discuss the possibility of some late-offseason acquisitions. While Hollander — who is second in the Seattle front office hierarchy behind baseball operations president Jerry Dipoto — left the door ajar for anything, he indicated the likelier course of action was to supplement towards the back of the roster.
“You never know. I think this group of players that we have — our 40-man roster as is — we may add on the margins. We may add in a more significant way, but I would expect it’s probably more on the margins than a real significant way based on where we’re at,” Hollander said (link via Daniel Kramer of MLB.com).
The comments come a couple days after Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reported that the M’s have had internal discussions about Matt Chapman, one of the top four unsigned free agents. Hollander didn’t comment on Chapman — the CBA limits what team personnel are allowed to say regarding specific players — but Kramer writes that the M’s conversations about the third baseman occurred earlier in the month.
There was never any indication that Seattle is deeply involved in Chapman’s market. Kramer reports that the M’s interest has been contingent on the four-time Gold Glover lowering his asking price significantly. According to Kramer, a nine-figure deal for Chapman would be a “non-starter” for Seattle. The MLB.com report indicates the Mariners would be amenable to a shorter-term/incentive-laden contract, although that unsurprisingly hasn’t been of interest to Chapman’s camp at the Boras Corporation.
Third base looks like a relative weak point for Seattle. The Mariners dealt Eugenio Suárez to the Diamondbacks at the beginning of the offseason. They brought in Luis Urías in a small trade with the Red Sox and indirectly addressed the hot corner with last month’s Jorge Polanco deal. Installing Polanco at second base pushes lefty-hitting Josh Rojas over to third, likely in a platoon with the right-handed Urías.
Urías enters camp at a little less than full strength. The Mariners reveled today that he is battling some soreness in his throwing shoulder coming out of winter ball (via Divish). It’s not a serious issue but will keep him from throwing across the diamond in infield drills early in Spring Training.
Hollander downplayed any concern about the third base platoon. Asked if the M’s felt they’re vulnerable at the position, he replied: “I don’t really feel that way, no. … We feel really good about what the combination of Josh and Luis can do for us this year.”
That’s the expected tone for a GM to strike publicly. That said, Chapman is the only unsigned third baseman who’d be a clear upgrade on the Rojas/Urías pairing. If Seattle is simply keeping tabs on his market in case the opportunity presents itself to jump in at a lower price, they’re presumably otherwise content with their in-house options.
Seattle has also been loosely tied to the top two remaining free agents, Blake Snell and Cody Bellinger. The link to Snell has primarily been about geography rather than team need. The defending NL Cy Young winner is a Seattle native and there has been some speculation he could prefer to stay on the West Coast after three seasons in San Diego.
Despite that chatter, Kramer writes that the Mariners haven’t shown much interest in Snell at any point during the winter. The M’s traded rehabbing starter Robbie Ray and depth arm Marco Gonzales but have held onto their top five starters: George Kirby, Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, Bryce Miller and Bryan Woo. Former top 10 pick Emerson Hancock remains on hand as a high-upside depth piece.
Bellinger was arguably a better roster fit, but Kramer reports that Seattle hasn’t considered the former MVP in either of the past two offseasons. The M’s reacquired Mitch Haniger and brought in Luke Raley from Tampa Bay as part of a reshaped corner outfield. Seattle shipped out one-time top prospect Jarred Kelenic, leaving Haniger and Raley as the presumptive starters alongside Julio Rodríguez on the outfield grass.
Seattle has generally preferred the trade route over free agency under Dipoto, particularly with regards to position players. This offseason’s two-year, $24MM deal for Mitch Garver was the first multi-year free agent contract for a hitter that Seattle has given out in Dipoto’s tenure. Roster Resource projects the organization’s 2024 player spending in the $135MM range. That’s a middle-of-the-pack figure that’s right in line with last year’s approximate $137MM Opening Day sum.

Awwww no Chapman for the M’s
Reynaldo
Chapman was never in play for them; that was just Divish putting out a fluff piece as quid-pro-quo for Chapman’s agency in order to revitalize his market.
refereemn77
Probably not even that. Every team has had “internal discussions” about a lot of free agents. Those kind of stories are just speculation
ayrbhoy
Ryan Divish does not do “fluff.” He is a Seattle Times writer who publishes articles that can be described as the polar opposite of fluff. In fact his is the type of person who, not unlike Jerry Dipoto actually, will be so transparent it can get him into trouble with his employers.
Divish just described a visit to his bosses office in the latest “Meet at the Mitt” Podcast. You can hear him describe how M’s ownership was not very happy with an article of his ……….again! I assure you there is nothing “fluffy” about the man from Havre Montana! Besides the Mariners FO would only be discussing either a one year contract or a 2-3 year deal with option(s) for Chappy to go back to the open market.
Both Dipoto and Divish would not be afraid to tell you it’s highly unlikely that Ownership will pry open the heavy rusty doors of the cobweb infested Mariners vault. Imagine Harrison Ford at the entrance to the cave in Raiders of the Lost Ark or the kids discovering the ghost ship in “Goonies.” That’s what it’s like when John Stanton opens the Mariners Vault.
Reynaldo
How do you think journalists get “leads”?
Agents feed them news to journalists in exchange for agreeing to write articles on certain players for them from time to time. It’s a reciprocal relationship that benefits everyone involved.
ayrbhoy
Reynaldo- if you actually knew anything about Divish you’d know he’d NEVER “write a fluff piece to revitalize a market.” That is not what he does.
Your general assumption might apply elsewhere but not here.
If you followed the Seattle Mariners you would know that Divish is one of the best Baseball writers in America. He’s been covering the M’s for nearly 20 yrs. I highly doubt Divish is doing anything other than writing down something he was told by a Player, Coach or FO staffer.
His Baseball IQ and overall intelligence comes across in all of his interviews with players, Coaches and FO people. That baseball acumen, and those years of experience have earned him a ton of respect. Which is why he gets players and Staffers text or call him directly.
LordTeaboBaggins
You know most sports writers don’t need agents to feed them news right?
myaccount2
Unsurprising, and I’m fine with it. Not sure how other M’s fans feel–or what the perception of fans outside the PNW is–but I feel like this is the best opening day roster the M’s have fielded since the rebuild ended.
marinersblue96
On paper I agree, my issue is that Haniger, Garver, and Polanco all have extensive injury histories. I have a hard time believing any of the 3 will play more than 115 games. We don’t have anyone on the bench that can come close to their production if/when they go down for a stretch.
The SP and RP are both top 2/3 in MLB so that is going to have to carry the team. I hope if they are in contention they open up their wallets at the deadline, not holding my breath on that though.
myaccount2
I’m more hopeful that Garver will stay healthy than the other two, simply because he won’t have the wear and tear he’s been used to. He also missed games because of unlucky circumstances last season (Covid, HBP in the ribs, etc.) Let’s hope we have a season without a Mitch freak injury, too. Protect that man’s testicles!!
FossSellsKeys
Really? A team that plans to deploy the dessicated remains of Mitch Hanniger and OFFENSIVE WEAPON Josh Rojas at the power positions of 3B and RF? The bottom half of that lineup reads more like a list of guys who should be DFA’d. Gonna be a lot of 2-1 games with that group…
C Us Sink
Don’t forget about the mega threats of Dylan Moore and Sam Haggerty. Strike fear into every opposing team.
McGrundle
Lightning in a bottle!
myaccount2
@C- You can tell when people don’t know how to evaluate super utility guys. Statistics don’t lie–no matter your “evidence” or eye test opinion, the fact is that Moore has been an above average bat the past two seasons. Combined with the ability to play 5 positions well and another in a pinch, he’s an effective player and an important piece of the roster.
Also, it’ll probably take an injury for Haggerty to break camp unless he’s very impressive.
lee cousins
aw shucks.
ayrbhoy
Although Haniger has been desperately unlucky with FLUKE injuries he’s only 2 yrs removed from a 39 HR 100 RBI 122 OPS+ 3.1 bWAR season. 2 yrs before that he had a whopping 6.5 bWAR in RF in Seattle. That doesn’t guarantee he will do that in 2024 but no-one knows how a new baseball season unfolds. No-one! Haniger is long overdue some good fortune. He’s been as lucky as the 3rd owner of Apple (Ronald Wayne) a man who would be a multi Billionaire if he had just held onto his 10% share in the Company instead of selling his 10% share early on for $800!!!
McGrundle
He was the Mariner’s fifth ruptured testicle.
myaccount2
@Foss- Rojas will be part of a platoon with Urias. When you look at the platoon splits of the two, it equates to greater production on average than what Suarez gave the Mariners last year.
Even if we ignore 3B and call it a downgrade (which I’d say is only slightly over an aging Suarez with slowing bat speed), the M’s have trotted out who at 2B the last 3 years? Exactly. Even if Polanco only plays 90 games, he’s almost certain to provide more WAR than Frazier, Wong, etc. had previously.
The rotation is the best it’s been on opening day, as long as Miller and Woo can stay healthy because Robbie Ray was not it.
The back end bullpen trio is the most talented trio they’ve had, maybe in team history.
If Haniger stays healthy, we know he can hit in T-Mobile Park.
Julio, Cal, Kirby, and Gilbert are another year older and entering what should be the prime of their careers.
J.P. tapped into a power stroke, which he had never seen before, and I think we can expect that he won’t regress all the way back to a 7 HR guy.
So combining the natural progression of the young core with the types of players added (Haniger, Polanco, Raley, Santos), I think it’s the most complementary of a roster Dipoto and Hollander have assembled.
So, yes. Really.

What would you do differently?

myaccount2, this is what some of us have been saying for a long time. The Mariners are right where they need to be for 2024, and have been ready for months.
Sure, they picked up some notable players recently, but the effect was not that huge. Just tinkering with a smooth-running machine.
Go Mariners. Play ball!

As usual Fred in sighting a riot.

Hot take maybe but I bet the Urias/Rojas combo has a higher WRC+ than Chapman.

Hard for that combo to post better stats when Urias sounds like he’s hurt already, unfortunately.

I usually trust Divish’s reporting.
pd14athletics
Ok I’ll bite… Chapman is one player/roster spot. So if he can produce alone what two other players can do via a platoon advantage, that has to hold a lot of value, right? Beyond that, I’m wRC+ is a measure of just offense but park and era adjusted. If that factors in defense please let me know, but my understanding is that it doesn’t. So talking financials, maybe the gap between what Rojas/Urias makes more sense for the team than what adding Chapman will cost… but to me Chapman is a huge add should be within the realm of what Seattle has been promising their fans. Now is the time to strike on a big FA. I’d definitely make the argument for Bellinger as well. If Chapman settles for a reasonable deal I think he’s a great add for Seattle. Seattle is a legit contender and I view them as a big signing away from being a serious threat.
Brettlez
Having a single player producing vs 2 doesn’t matter. The Rays do this every year, platoon 2 cheap players to get production of one expensive one.
pd14athletics
Well production would include more than just wRC+… as I could be wrong but I don’t believe that accounts for defense, where Chapman is elite. I understand the value of a platoon, but I still think having 1 player that can put up same offensive numbers as a pair in a platoon is more valuable. You are using one less roster spot for that need. I get that the pair of Urias and Rojas wouldn’t strictly be used for platoon at 3B. They might get time at other positions, or pinch hit. But I still think most managers given the option would rather have a regular at 3B and have other motives for the bench pieces. Most importantly though is Chapman has multiple gold gloves, platinum gloves, and fielding bible awards. His glove is a huge part of his game.
Brettlez
I said I believe the platoon would have a better WRC+ than Chapman. Chapman has averaged a 109 WRC the last 3 years while striking out near 30% and being incredibly streaky. Chapman’s defense is still good but has been declining and is no longer elite. Basically,I’d prefer to have better offensive production with less Ks and sacrifice defensive production while saving 15M+ AAV in payroll.
pd14athletics
Ok, fair. I’m partial to Chapman as an A’s fan. I’ve been up in WA for 7 years now and from a personal perspective I think it would be cool to see him play up here. Money is a huge part of it, I get that. With the A’s being the mess they are right now with moving to Vegas and pulling off terrible trades of their best players I’ve been paying more attention to other teams. I have just felt bad for Mariners fans with the team having a great core but just not quite willing to really go for it recently. It was 2 decades between playoff appearances, yes they have a good and young team but that window will only be open for so long. Maybe they make a big trade at the deadline this year depending on standings (like Luis Castillo from Reds), I just give pause to that idea since 2 of the other 3 last years when they were in the hunt they sold off players instead of added.
ayrbhoy
Last season Chapman was one of the Leagues Top 5 hitters until he suffered a finger injury. Not exactly the best injury for a baseball player- it affects your swing at the playe and your glovework on defense .
Chapman’s defense may not be elite like it was in his single Platinum glove award season but an injured Chapman still managed 6 OAA at the hot corner last year.
Both Rojas and Urias are TERRIBLE defenders at 3B. You’re talking about a double digit margin in Baseball Savants OAA metric. Another thing- JP Crawford is an excellent Defender going to his Left. His glovework to plays on his Right gets poor grades. So- if Rojas and Urias are playing bad defense at 3rd next to a SS who makes all his mistakes to his Right- The M’s INF defense will be significantly worse this year since Polanco and Ty France have poor defensive metrics.
This is where Chapman’s Defense would really help the Mariners Pitching- JP can stick to his strength- strong glovework in the middle and to his Left. He can let Chapman cover more ground. The INF is less of a liabilty with all RH hitters at the plate
myaccount2
And a higher wRC+ than Geno.
lee cousins
What about catching. and throwing the ball?
Plugnplay
Wow! Fluff! Don’t be cheap when your 3/4 year window started last year. I know a lot rip my team for opposite reasons, having said wasting 2 great players. But in reality it was only 1. Simply because they were hardly on the field together. The M’s might be wasting what teams covet the most. Good quality controlled starting pitching. That’s 10 fold more a huge injustice to a fan base. That is if u know baseball.

I think as it stands right now they’ll win the AL West.
sadmarinersfan
I highly doubt it, both Houston and Texas are far more talented in my opinion.
BrianStrowman9
I think they’re all pretty close. I have Houston as the most talented for 2024. Gets murkier after that. Houston may lose Bregman, JV, and Pressly in ‘25. They don’t have a farm to produce high impact talent at the moment either. I think they’re approaching a down slide but I don’t see it in ‘24.
ayrbhoy
“Far more talented” than a 2022 and 2023 Seattle team that had worse lineups than this 2024 iteration? A Seattle team that finished 2 games short of being tied atop the AL West last year? A team that advanced to the ALDS and gave HOU its stiffest competition over the entire playoffs the year before? A team that was just one pitch away from being up 1-0 in HOU in game 1. A young Seattle team that held the Astros scoreless for 18 innings in game 3?
The M’s won the head to head record of 9-4 against HOU last year. The SEA Rotation finally figured out how to attack that HOU lineup. Plus that Astros team lost 3 high leverage RPers in Hector Neris, Phil Maton and Ryan Stanek. Although they added one good RPer in Josh Hader subtracting 3 back end BP arms is not how you improve your BP. The 2024 SEA lineup has just as many injury concerns as HOU. The middle of that HOU lineup has missed a ton of games to injuries over the past few seasons.
The Rangers have even more injury concerns on their Roster, a big collection of crocked old age pensioners and one of THE worst BP’s in MLB. It’s no wonder Fangraphs has projected them to go 82-80 in 2024. A 6 person panel in the USAToday also has the M’s projected as an 89 win team in 2nd place ahead of TX. The 4th best record in the AL behind BAL NY and HOU.
But I’m sure you have more experience and insight into predicting the outcomes of a new baseball season.

The more I read Hollander’s comments over and over, the more irritated I become. If I put effort into my job in a marginal way, rather than significant effort, I wouldn’t have my job anymore. The continued display of mediocrity from this organization is truly pathetic…
ayrbhoy
Hollander is not responsible for making the decision to improve the team, in fact neither is his boss Jerry Dipoto. Ultimately the decision falls on an ownership group that doesn’t have the balls to take on any financial risk AT ALL. The same ownership group that PROMISED its fanbase that it will invest in the team as the young rebuilt roster begins to contend in the AL West.
It’s not hard to find ownerships comments on this when they pitched the idea of a rebuild to the fans. A fanbase who had already suffered through terrible FO decisions on trades and acquisitions for over a decade before the current FO group came in. Google “Worst MLB trades” and you’ll see numerous Mariners trades in the Top 30 Worst trades.
C Us Sink
I agree with most of what you said, but I believe THEY ALL ARE RESPONSIBLE for making the decisions to improve the team, or not. Been a fan of this team for nearly 50 years, and they just never seem to want to win it all. It’s a letdown for every Ms fan.
Reynaldo
You’ve been a fan for nearly 50 years, and been on this Earth for more, but every one of your comment on here seems to indicate that you don’t quite understand the difference between how a sport team’s ownership operates vs its Front Office. .
We get it, you’re bitter over their lack of spending. But it’s a tired trope of blaming it on the FO. They are working within the boundaries of what they are given.
If you are still working at a job, or try to remember when you were, just imagine criticizing or undermining your superiors. See where that gets you instead of doing the job that you were hired to do faithfully and to the best of your ability.
C Us Sink
Yes, I can be bitter, and it’s a sports team. I also have a lot of other priorities besides the Ms. So if they win 62 or 102, it’s still a sports team that has done little to nothing to succeed, regardless of FO or Ownership, and their inner workings.
BigRedMachine
So bitter. You cannot say that Dipoto and Hollander are going about their job and a marginal way. You really don’t think they are doing the best they can with what they have? Everyone makes mistakes but you cannot say they don’t care and don’t want to win a World Series in this town.
ayrbhoy
Couldn’t agree more Big Red- Near the end of the 2023 season Ownership told Dipoto and Hollander they would be able to increase their payroll spending from the 2023 budget.
The FO would have a large net of targets to pursue…. that is until Ownership then changed its mind. After telling the FO to spend more money the Owners used the Root Sports TV contract as an excuse to tell the FO to CUT payroll. This forced the FO to abandon their Plan A. Now the FO had 2 options 1) run it back again w/o Teoscar and the rest of the 2023 FA’s. 2) Trade assets and cut payroll in order to add new players.
It doesnt take a marginal effort to improve this lineup by spending less money. It takes an almost superhuman effort to turn a negative into a positive……….but some people are just hard to please. They’ll never do anything but look for the worst in people.
C Us Sink
Regardless of Ownership or FO decisions, adding “marginal” talent will get you ” marginal” results, regardless of Super Jerry/Justin. It’s called insanity, when you do the same things (like adding marginal talent), and expecting different or better results, is my thought. I’m sure Jerry and Justin are well intentioned, but only to the degree they’re allowed to be. I like your thoughts tho.
LordTeaboBaggins
The ownership has taken a financial risk though. Bad news is they took it on buying a failing regional sports network lol

I don’t like the idea of collusion, but man, can’t argue with all these teams standing firm and basically telling all his big free agents to pound sand unless they come down on their asking price.

We stood patiently during this rebuild years now that paydirt is in reach only to hear that were once again limited in what we can expect, why do this rebuild anyway when the main objectives are about the money that can be saved.
Bnickles127
Remember when we had to be patient with low payrolls during the rebuild and we would add and spend and go for it once our competitive window opened? Shuffling around players and salary dumping just to be able to sign someone is not what fans were promised and I don’t understand how people have forgotten about that just because trader J did some good shuffling. Has Stanton spoken a word all offseason on any platform?
ayrbhoy
I’d prefer not to!!! Hahaha It’s such an injustice. A travesty. It honestly gets my blood boiling. Knowing that we’ve been lied to like that. If a Sports Franchise Owner is only in that business to make money- sell the team. There are better ways to invest your Billions than buying a baseball team with middle market TV revenue. The Seattle fans take on financial risk to support the team why can’t the owner take on just a small amount? Don’t get me started! Haha

This Seattle fan has NOT forgotten. It’s only the casual Sports fans in the Pacific NW that forgets something like that! If you are a Baseball fan first, it’s crystal clear why this FO has literally traded hundreds of players over their 8 yrs in Office

Has to be the worst pic of Chapman ever. Looks like a retired high school batting coach.
BigRedMachine
Everything that I have read still has the Mariners with $8-$10 million to possibly spend. I am actually ok with not spending it if they will now make a positive move at the trade deadline if they are in the playoff race at that time. The last two years trade deadline moves of trading Kendall Graveman and Paul Sewald did not spell “we are trying to get better” and “we are going for it” to the fan base or more importantly to the players and both were taking as so, especially in the M’s clubhouse. They seem to be better and have more depth on paper so maybe they see what they need going forward. I still feel like they need another Outfielder and would like to see them grab Tommy Pham if it was not expensive.
MsFanWithPaperBag
Bellinger a much better fit than Chapman
ayrbhoy
Belli doesnt fit into the Mariners payroll.
Mekias0
We all should realize by now that the M’s are on a very strict budget and won’t be increasing payroll unless the absolute perfect fit comes along at the right price. Chapman is not that guy.
I’m pretty confident that we can get a 2 WAR 3rd baseman out of Urias/Rojas so I’m fine with avoiding Chapman. I’m more worried about corner OF & 1B but the options we have there are capable of providing good value. We may not know where the holes are until June or July. Hopefully ownership will allow us to fill those holes at the deadline.
teddyj
Chapman is not even close to being worth nine figures.
LordTeaboBaggins
Considering starting this year, the Mariners will be paying the Portland Trail Blazers more than J-Rod, are we really surprised by this?
lee cousins
I’ve come to my senses FORGET ABOUT Chapman the M’s need to sign Bellinger. Now the M’s need to come to there cents as well, and sign Bellinger. As constructed the M’s will be playing all the more Marlowe, Canzone, Trammel that is a given, the latter if he even makes the team. With Bellinger your surly going to make the playoffs, and will look to go further than without him, where the big prize is a reality you’re one player away from those possibilities. The money that would be spent on him will be recaptured in these playoff games. Don’t squander this opportunity when being this close. I’m sure you will have enough money that they won’t turn off the lights. Now make a winning move.
PDub4170
You have to overpay for hitters to come to Seattle because of the ballpark (like Colorado for pitchers) and the travel. And the current Mariner ownership is unwilling to do that.
