Feb. 29: The Giants announced this morning that Beck has been diagnosed with an aneurysm in his upper arm. He’s currently weighing his treatment options. The team will likely have more information in the coming days.
There’s no firm timetable on how long Beck might be sidelined, but manager Bob Melvin told reporters that he won’t be on the Opening Day roster (X link via Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle). The Giants appear to be anticipating a fairly lengthy absence, though Melvin did not rule out the possibility that Beck could pitch for them at some point this season.
Feb. 27: Giants right-hander Tristan Beck has left the team’s spring complex and is traveling back to San Francisco to undergo testing after experiencing discomfort in his right hand, the team announced to reporters (X link via Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area). The team will provide further updates in the coming days.
Beck, 27, becomes the second Giants starter to incur an injury of some sort in camp. Fellow righty Keaton Winn has been slowed by a nerve issue in his pitching elbow. He resumed throwing Sunday but is at least a week behind the rest of the group. That’s good news, but early injury troubles for the Giants’ presumptive fourth and fifth starters is nevertheless unsettling — particularly given the patchwork nature of the starting staff behind ace Logan Webb.
The Giants are relying on Winn, Beck, top prospect Kyle Harrison and reliever-turned-starter Jordan Hicks to shoulder the bulk of the workload in the rotation. In terms of proven big league starters, it’s among the thinnest rotations in the game. Veterans Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray will eventually join that group, but both will very likely open the season on the injured list. Ray will be sidelined into the season’s second half as he recovers from last May’s Tommy John surgery. Cobb is on the mend from October hip surgery. A precise return date isn’t clear, but Pavlovic suggested a couple weeks back that Cobb was hoping to be cleared to face hitters by the end of spring training. That trajectory would likely sideline him into May, at the very least.
Beck came to the Giants by way of the 2019 trade that shipped former closer Mark Melancon to Atlanta. The former fourth-round pick made his MLB debut in 2023, pitching 85 innings of 3.92 ERA ball with a below-average 19.2% strikeout rate but a strong 5.9% walk rate. Most of that work came as a multi-inning reliever, however. Beck appeared in 33 games for San Francisco but made just three starts. He completed five innings only three times all season — twice in long relief and once in a start that marked his final appearance of the year.
Another injury scare for a Giants starter will only further spark speculation about the possibility of the Giants adding to the rotation. President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has downplayed the potential for any notable acquisitions following the team’s signing of Jorge Soler, but the Giants remain one of the most obvious fits for high-profile free agents like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery — both in terms of actual roster need and from a payroll vantage point. The team’s projected $164MM Opening Day payroll (via Roster Resource) is more than $36MM south of the franchise-record $200.5MM mark set back in 2018, and the Giants are also about $24MM shy of the luxury-tax threshold.
If the Giants are strictly averse to shelling out the requisite years and dollars needed to bring in Snell or Montgomery, there are still alternatives on the free agent market. Michael Lorenzen and Mike Clevinger remain unsigned, as do rebound candidates like Eric Lauer, Jake Odorizzi and Noah Syndergaard (to name a few).

Snell 3/100 do it !
Wagner>Cobb
That’s a great deal to get him on. Wish the Cardinals would go aggressive and do that. Or 3/80 for Monty.
User 2161944466
Plenty of starting options still available but you’d have to find one that doesn’t read the comment section on an MLBTR Giants article.
foppert2
Ha ha. They would be changing sports.
sf fan
Snell or Montgomery, won’t happen, not real. Sign Clevinger. He pitched well the last few years and is not expensive. Or maybe Lorenzen.
Datashark
They need more than one Clevinger.
Wagner>Cobb
Clevinger was very solid last year. Another year removed from injury means his innings totals should go up too. He would be a very solid addition for an SF rotation that is totally uncertain.
oldgfan
Yuck.
I’d rather they try out the next 4 rookies before those two. Definitely time to get some arms stretched out this spring.
Datashark
Rookies cannot be depended on for innings, but maybe the plan is use bullpen with 3 rookie starters by the time all-star break comes trade those tired arms and/or option them and bring in Ray and Cobbs to finish out season battling for 4th place.
Wagner>Cobb
“To finish out battling for 4th place”
That was hilarious
Redwolves3
NO MORE opener/bulk innings pitching
Wagner>Cobb
@Redwolves3
Yeah, they need actual starters to fill the rotation. Don’t cut corners.
LordD99
Clevinger is a consolation prize for those who don’t sign Snell or Montgomery. Sign him now because his price will go up once he’s the only game in town.
Datashark
Don’t worry, Farhan acquired many free agent starting pitchers. Oops!
He collected a reliever to be a starter and already has 2 down before season and an assortment of injured starters where many wont make back to the mound until after all-star break.
Enrico Pallazzo
Woopsie!

Not a very impressive offseason for giants. They should have signed snell, Chapman, and soler, not traded for a guy currently hurt, and wasted a fortune on some outfielder who can’t hit for power and lacks speed.
I gave their gm the benefit of the doubt til this offseason but now- giants will do well to move on I think
sfgiantkev1
Farhad sucks. He couldn’t sign a good free agent if it was handed to him on a silver platter.
cainer18
To be fair, he got Correa before the world knew his ankle is glass. And there’s no way Ohtani or Judge were going anywhere other than LA and NY, so he’s batting like .250 or .333 on top tier free agents. All while half the league is batting .000 because they won’t spend
foppert2
I love it. Such an expert. And written with so much seriousness. Too funny.
I’m sure Johnson will take your well researched opinion on board.
Datashark
that Ray trade was SOLID – they were not going to need haniger with Lee being paid 100m
Wagner>Cobb
I think Ray will do well with them. But acquiring him via trade looks best if they also sign another quality starter.
Seamaholic
Ray may never be an effective starter again. He had a ligament AND a tendon issue at the same time. And he’s 32. I thought that trade was an appropriate risk since they didn’t give up much, but a risk nonetheless.
mab51357
There is also the chance he comes back even better than before. Sometimes new arm parts actually help. Probably not real likely, but could go either way.
Wagner>Cobb
If Snell or Monty are too rich for their blood there are still other options to provide decent innings.
sfgiantkev1
I swear my team has had more injuries in the last few years than any other team.
mab51357
I’ve felt the same way also. I wonder how pitchers from other eras feel about some of the seemingly minor injuries that shelf today’s pitchers. A sore hand would probably get an eye roll at minimum. But at least todays players make tons of money while sitting out. Lol
its_happening
More than the Yankees?
Seamaholic
Oh come on. Just look in your own division. At one point last year the Rockies had their SEVEN top starting pitchers out, three with season ending injuries, and three of their top prospect pitchers had TJ surgery in the same week. So, no. Actually the Giants have had very good luck with their key guys for years. It’s kind of a bitter joke among fans of other NL West teams. Logan Webb has never been seriously hurt. Just wait.
mab51357
Hey Seam. I know lots of other teams had as many injuries as the Giants last year. I’m sure other teams fans feel the same about their teams too. I think that’s fairly natural. Let’s not send bad Logan Webb mojo though. That would be a gut punch to the whole organization. He’s a top notch workhorse and that is a concern for the future. I think his mentality is to pitch until something breaks off and he’s probably pitched through some nagging injuries, but doesn’t complain so we might not know when he’s ailing. But you’re right about nothing major so far.
dubtastic
That gut punch would be a soften blow if FZ actually signed an SP like Snell
sfgiantkev1
We already have JD Davis. We don’t need Chapman, but I would like to have Snell.
Datashark
Lets compare
Offensively: Chapman has more power potential than Davis. Average wise they both are below league average, where chapman could hover around .220 more than Davis.
Defensively: this is a no brainer just last year Davis was a -11 on defensive runs saved while Matt was a +12
that is a huge difference.
Jean Matrac
But it’s not just about who’s better between Chapman and Davis. It’s more complex than that. If it was just for next season, then Chapman would be a no-brainer. But Chapman wants 6 years and Davis is a FA in 2025. The length of the deal that Chapman is seeking is probably why no team has signed him yet.
It’s understandable from both sides, where Chapman doesn’t want to go back into free-agency at 34, but teams don’t want to be paying him a lot of money 6 years from now. Sometimes it’s smarter to go with a lesser player than lock the team into a potential albatross contract.
oldgfan
It’s also about upcoming position options. Luciano may need to move over, and Schmitt would be blocked too.
I feel both of those guys have a better future than Chapman’s declining years.
tedtheodorelogan
I’d be willing to bet that Matt Chapman produces more WAR from now until the end of his career than Schmidt does for his entire career.
Jean Matrac
Why are you comparing Chapman and Schmitt? It’s not an either/or. Not signing Chapman does not mean Schmitt will be the long term 3B for the Giants.
tedtheodorelogan
Let’s be completely honest here. They need both of those guys, plus two more legitimate starting pitchers, at least one more good outfielder, and a starting shortstop who isn’t 22 years old and constantly injured if they are actually trying to win. Other than those minor issues, Farhan built a great roster. Get ready to see a bunch of openers, and a healthy dose of Wade Meckler and Donovan Walton.
scottn59c
Uf.
foppert2
Let’s be really really utterly and completely honest. You are a fan and outside of your own mind, you know SFA about what’s required.
tedtheodorelogan
Keep that head buried deep in the sand, just where Farhan likes it. You must be one of the guys who goes to the game to enjoy the wine and cheese, and winning baseball games doesn’t matter.
foppert2
Will do. You keep your all knowledgeable head up your own arse. You obviously love the view.
Jean Matrac
tedtheodorelogan, Are you a politician? Why do you need to try to make a point by defining others to support your agenda?
foppert2
Because Theodore thinks Theodore knows everything.
tedtheodorelogan
Farhan’s rotation of cards is falling down a week into spring training. Who could have possibly seen that coming? Oh, everybody other than Farhan? This dude is brutally bad at his job.
foppert2
lol at falling down. So funny.
Seamaholic
He’s planning for 2025. I know it’s been a while since the Giants were in this position, but they’re not trying to win this year (and it would be hopeless anyway with the Dodgers and Dbacks in the division). Try and wrap your head around it, as you’d end up a lot less angry.
pbuchman
Being in a position where we’re building toward 2025 is itself a failure. I like Zaidi, but he’s clearly failed to live up to expectations. So far he’s 1 for 5 in producing post-season teams, and the Giants are, on paper, only the third or fourth best team in the division going into the current season. He’s not producing results, and fans are completely justified in being ticked off about it.
Redwolves3
1st injury to Winn & now Beck. And Zaidi still hasn’t done anything to get another top of rotation SP (Snell Montgomery Cease Luzardo Valdez).
FIRE ZAIDI
FIRE ZAIDI

mab51357
I agree he needs to be gone. Bring in someone with a different philosophy. I also don’t think he gets hired for any other team’s top executive. Might get hired as some assistant but I think it’ll be awhile before he gets a job running a team’s front office.
foppert2
Oooh. More CAPS !!
The pressure of it all.
frugalfarhan
Why are you always defending Farhan foppert? Just super curious why you have problems with every single post that criticizes the guy. Also wondering if you either work for the Giants, are related to Farhan, or are just blind
foppert2
Why do you only post to criticise him ?
Because the posts are juvenile, incessant, grossly unfair and in 90% of cases, contain information that’s simply just not true. Wouldn’t matter who it is, if that’s being dished out to someone, I’m defending them, and mocking the childish perpetrators.
Gmen777
Winn has soreness now this. Go and sign Monty or Snell Zaidi
foppert2
Winn had soreness. Past tense
dubtastic
Honestly, I believe the Giants can make Syndergaard a reclamation project like Gausman, Rodon, Smyly, Pomeranz, etc for a major league deal of 3m base w/incentives..they need an mlb starter to cover Beck and Winn’s potential IL stint..
agnes gooch
Giants are super cautious with any twinge of pain, they have instructed players to immediately tell someone if they feel anything at all. The old mantra of “throw some dirt on it” or “play through it” is not how they run things. Hopefully this is just precautionary and he will be ok.
xtraflamy
Good thing they were cautious. Brachial aneurysm is rare (especially in someone so young) and can threaten the arm. He’s lucky he has the best healthcare and doctors available to him, and the best rehab. Here’s hoping for a full recovery.
Seamaholic
Umm … an aneurysm is not “precautionary.” Depending on where and how big it is and if it recurs, which blood clots tend to, that could be career ending. Has happened to several pitchers recently.
User 112202899
Hmm.. wonder why?
CarolinaCubsandKush
That sounds like Blake Snell’s music
foppert2
Get healthy, Tristan. You are front of the queue for foppert love this year. I need you to get off to a good start !
GSWfanklay
Just sign Snell already
GSWfanklay
Sign snell and when Cobb and Ray get Healthy that’s a heck of a rotation
dubtastic
5 spot of either Harrison/Hicks/Beck/Winn..whoever is pitching will make the Giants rotation nasty..
Seamaholic
Far from guarantee they WILL get healthy this year, or Webb and Harrison stay healthy. But in any case, Giants are not trying to compete this year.
frugalfarhan
Used to be that going into spring training with 1-2 holes in your starting rotation was cause to worry. Having 4 holes and 2 of the guys who may have helped fill those holes injured is like going into a cage fight with 2 broken arms! Not sure how they thought they were going to make it through the year with these 2 guys healthy and now they will be giving anyone with a heart beat a chance to pitch! Great job Farhan thanks for being so smart and creative!!
foppert2
Ha ha. Look at the doomers go !
SF6sparky
Is Foppert another way of saying Farhan? Where’s your optimism coming from? Serious question. I’d love to have some going into this year.
agnes gooch
Hi foppert, it’s really out of control here with the dooming. I’m sending Beck healing vibes, this has to be so hard and scary for him. We have a ton of young arms, and it’s time for Black to stand tall! Go Giants!!! Stay golden foppert!
frugalfarhan
You are enjoying champagne on the deck of the titanic dude. Open your eyes and maybe change your handle to unrealisticallyoptimistic
Jacksson13
Start working the phone.
Can’t expect to make it to the time that Ray and Cobb are available.
With: Webb, Hicks, Harrison, Pray for Rain and Pray for Rain.
Not a clever name
Great point Jacksson, and the pray for rain only worked back then because one of those days was Zito, who at home was pretty good, if it was a road trip though might as well have just given the opposing team 7 or 8 runs and started the game in the top of the 5th.
Seamaholic
The Giants very obviously are not trying to win this year. They have a decent class of prospects on the way, and Webb and Doval are still pretty young. The Dodgers are unbeatable most likely and the Dbacks have a couple years left in their window. They’re shooting for 2025, so I really doubt they’re gonna do much but bring in a couple warm bodies to get them through July.
scottn59c
@Seamaholic: What are the Giants going to do in ’25 that they couldn’t do now? The Dodgers aren’t likely to be any less formidable then. I don’t see anything that suggests that they’ll be looking to contend any more seriously then than they are now; what I see is a pattern of fielding mediocre, .500 rosters that, assuming all the cards fall their way, might sneak into the WC spot.
So long as the fans and their dollars support that outcome, no one is incentivized to change it anytime soon.
davemlaw
I hope Beck is alright and comes back healthy.
If they can repair his arm with a stent and go through his veins to get this done his arm should be fine. But surgery in the upper arm is never a good thing for a pitcher.
Just wish him health and recovery. Baseball will be waiting for him.
agnes gooch
I hope he’s ok too Dave, this is scary for such a young guy. All my best to him. Be well Tristan!
Mickey Solis
Another team that isn’t the Dodgers dealing with a significant injury. The path could not be clearer for these system abusing cheaters.
halloffamernobodycares
Bruh, Gonsolin, May, Kershaw, Buehler are all out with injuries right now. 4 of the 5 starters from last season are literally unavailable due to injuries.
GTFO with that falsehood.
5TUNT1N
Great job medical training staff! Maybe try a clevinger? If your not going for a snell.
User 4223176798
Wish the kid nothing but the best for a healthy recovery. Baseball is just a game. He has 60+ years ahead of him with good health.
Time for the Giants to open up the checkbook. Snell. I suspect though that Farhan will go dumpster diving at the five and dime for some retread. Prove me wrong – you haven’t yet.
foppert2
Ha ha ha. Yeah I’m sure he looks at your posts with a firm determination to better your expertise.
agnes gooch
Sending Tristan healing energy, poor kid. I am SO glad that the Giants sent him for expert advice and discovered the aneurysm before anything worse happened. All my best to him.
Non Roster Invitee
What a disaster. Only Cactus team to not win a game yet. I’m learning how to prepare a noose.
scottn59c
Spring training means zip. Don’t worry – they’re bound to finish ahead of the Rockies in the NL West….I think?
TellItGoodbye
Looks like Boras’ Beck voodoo doll is working.
foppert2
Speedy recovery Mr Beck. You know it’s there and it’s not in your head. Good result.
RobM
I believe Boras misread this off-season market with his position players, but I suspect he’ll still land very good deals for his pitchers, It’s a waiting game. Injuries will keep happening to starting pitchers as Spring Training moves along.
Wtp
G’s are now free to embrace their favorite song and dance: struck by the injury bug, its nobody’s fault, the plan would’ve worked if it worked!
luvochka
The Giants aren’t competing with the Dodgers they are competing in the wild card race. Please no Chapman or Snell, honestly the career stats for those guys are a horror show for what they cost. Go ahead and pick up a four or five guy and just try to hang on until the real pitchers get back. Then save your money for next year when guys worth something are available.
scottn59c
But the problem is that they missed on the guys that were available this year who could have made a difference, like Ohtani. and Yamamoto. Which FA’s are going to choose the Giants (after yet another middling, likely non-competitive season) over the other contending clubs? Even aging mercinaries like JDM are looking at the state and culture of the team and saying “no dice at any price”. I don’t think you’re going to see much change next year, regardless of who is available.
luvochka
Really even if you go back to when they won those World Series they patched together teams. What carried them to those titles was the unheard of luck they had drafting Lincecum, Cain, Madbum, and Posey. Otherwise the position players were still a patchwork of guys. I did feel bad about Yamamoto, it seems like he was affordable, but I think he was dead set on playing with Ohtani. I think if the Giants can scrape together a couple winning seasons you’ll see the perception of playing for them change, but in order for them to do that you need some of the kids to step up. Two or three even marquee players can’t carry a team of mediocrity.
foppert2
So JDM was looking at the state and culture of the team ?
Really ? Tell me more about where that info came from ?
scottn59c
Feel terrible for Beck, and wish the kid a speedy recovery. But this is a real possibility of building a rotation around an inexperienced, rookie core of guys who are being expected to shoulder an MLB workload.
Can Winn, Harrison, and Hicks realistically give you 100 innings apiece? What happens if Webb should end up needing to spend some time on the IL? This rotation is a house of cards, I tell you.
5TUNT1N
Just went to a funeral for a 49 year old who died of an aneurysm! Appreciate every chance you get everyone!
Buzz Saw
Not a diagnosis you want. Just the word aneurysm is scary to hear.
SFG.1
Now Zaidi will overpay for a couple of starters who will be marginal at best keeping younger arms languishing in the minors as a result.
I’d put Mason Black, Hayden Birdsong, and Carson Wisenhunt. Take their lumps if they even have many and get them all ready to win in 2025 and beyond.
