Feb 18: The Giants officially announced Soler’s deal this afternoon. The slugger will received a $9MM signing bonus in addition to $7MM in salary for the 2024 season and $13MM salaries for each of the 2025 and 2026 seasons. To make room for Soler on the club’s 40-man roster, right-hander Austin Warren was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Feb 13, 6:58AM: Soler’s contract with San Francisco guarantees the slugger $42MM, according to Mike Rodriguez (X Link). The deal is a nearly exact match with MLBTR’s prediction of a three-year, $45MM pact for Soler back in November as part of our annual Top 50 MLB free agents list.
1:02AM: The Giants have agreed to a three-year deal with free agent designated hitter/outfielder Jorge Soler, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The agreement is pending a physical. Soler is a client of the MVP Sports Group.
Talks between Soler and the Giants have been going on for at least the past week. As of this morning, the Giants were still reported to be in the mix but had balked at Soler’s request for a third guaranteed season. That, it seems, has changed over the course of the day.
Soler, 32, opted out of the final season of his three-year, $36MM deal with the Marlins back in November after belting 36 home runs while hitting .250/.341/.512 on the season (126 wRC+). Soler posted the second-best walk and strikeout rates of his career at 11.4% and 24.3%, respectively, and Statcast pegged him in the 81st percentile or better in average exit velocity, hard-hit rate and barrel rate.
It’s the type of power profile that the Giants have lacked in recent years. The 2023 Giants ranked 19th in the Majors in home runs (174), 24th in runs scored (674), 28th in average (.235), 24th in on-base percentage (.312) and 27th in slugging percentage (.383). The Giants notoriously haven’t had a player deliver a 30-homer season since Barry Bonds in 2004, and they’ve only had one 20-homer hitter in their lineup in each of the past two seasons (Joc Pederson with 23 in 2022 and Wilmer Flores with 23 last year).
Soler brings a wholly different brand of power. Last year’s 36 big flies were only the second-most he’s hit in a season. Soler paced the American League with 48 homers for the Royals back in 2019, and while injuries have limited him to just two 30-homer seasons in his career, he’s averaged 32 homers per 162 games played in his career. Dating back to that 2019 breakout, Soler ranks 17th among 302 qualified hitters with a .248 isolated power mark (slugging minus batting average). Overall, he’s batted .240/.331/.488 during that time.
The path Soler takes to get to his production isn’t the most straightforward. He’s a streaky hitter in-season and a volatile one from a year-to-year standpoint, with his 2019 and 2023 output teetering on excellent while his 2022 numbers were decidedly below average. Even in the 2021 season that saw Soler catch fire following a trade to Atlanta and go on to be named World Series MVP, he was hitting just .198/.288/.377 in 360 plate appearances at the time Kansas City traded him. He slashed .269/.358/.524 following the change of scenery. A three-year deal with Soler figures to come with its share of peaks and valleys, but he’s the type of bat who can near-singlehandedly carry a lineup for brief stretches, given his top-of-the-scale power.
Though he has plenty of experience in the outfield corners, Soler isn’t likely to see much time there in San Francisco. His defensive grades have continue to decline over the years, and the Marlins only played him sparingly in right field — including just 241 innings last year. Soler has only twice reached 500 defensive innings played in a season. He’ll serve as the Giants’ primary designated hitter, though it’s possible he’ll make occasional appearances in left or right field.
That’s particularly true given that Soler does offer a nice right-handed complement to left-handed corner outfielders like Michael Conforto and Mike Yastrzemski. Production against left-handed pitchers, in particular, was a problem for the 2023 Giants (.245/.306/.376). Soler’s mammoth .277/.393/.688 output against lefties last year represents an enormous boost to San Francisco in such situations.
Adding Soler to the lineup likely cuts into the playing time for J.D. Davis and/or Wilmer Flores against right-handed opponents, but that’s a trio of potent right-handed bats to be able to trot out against opposing southpaws. New backup catcher Tom Murphy (career 126 wRC+ against lefties) should help in that regard as well, as will a full season of switch-hitting catcher Patrick Bailey, who feasted off lefties but struggled against righties. Broadly speaking, the San Francisco lineup looks far more equipped to handle left-handed pitching than last year’s club.
At $14MM per year for Soler, the slugger’s decision to opt out his final year and $13MM in Miami was overwhelmingly the right call. Miami opted not to issue a qualifying offer to Soler, so they won’t receive any draft compensation for his departure, nor will San Francisco be required to forfeit a draft pick or any international money.
Prior to the deal with Soler, San Francisco’s rough $155MM payroll was more than $33MM from their 2023 levels and more than $46MM south of the team’s franchise-record payroll level. That leaves plenty of room for the Giants front office to remain aggressive in free agency, even if ownership isn’t willing to set a new highwater mark on player payroll. That’s true even if the dollars are evenly distributed over the life of the three-year term, but if the deal is at all backloaded there’ll be perhaps a bit more to work with for the upcoming season.
To that end, it’s worth noting that the Giants have been linked to high-profile names like Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and Jordan Montgomery in recent weeks. A deal with Soler shouldn’t preclude them from continuing those pursuits, although with Soler now penciled in as the primary DH, a Chapman signing could perhaps be a precursor to a trade of J.D. Davis. Time will tell whether that’s worth pondering much or goes down as one of many unanswered offseason hypotheticals. Regardless, it seems quite likely that Soler’s signing won’t be the Giants’ last significant addition this winter.
Padres get Profar and Giants get Soler.
Smh.
Come.on Padres?!
Padres have Machado, tatis, boegarts, darvish, musgrove… Giants have Webb, now soler… I’ll take Padres thanks.
lol the padres have 3 good hitters and no depth, taking the giants any day to have a better year. Almost had more wins last year with a worse roster and have improved this offseason. Padres have only gotten worse
Great debate !
Jackson Merrill will be a better addition than anybody giants could add not named chapman. So got to put him on there ! I still think I like SF depth more than the padre star power
SD and SF are in equally bad spots. SF has like 3 1/2 starting pitchers on their 40-man and SD has half an outfield and no obvious bench options. But I’d still rather be the Giants, who at least have the payroll flexibility to make some meaningful additions before the season starts. The Padres are up against the wall already and don’t have a complete team.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Solar has 5.9 War total in 10 years with 5.3 of it coming in 2 years. He is the definition of a poor hitter. Do everything you can in your walk year and he almost made it to replacement level of 2 War.
WAR doesn’t like dh.
bs…er, br
“Do everything you can in your walk year and he almost made it to replacement level of 2 War.”
2 WAR is not teplace,nt level. It’s 2 Wins Above Repacement.
I can see how it’s confusing since it’s literally the name of the statistic
ab
A DH provides 0 defensive.value
Two players with identical batting lines, one can play 1st, the other can’t the 1B is more valuable..
It has nothing to do with hate
But if the 1B sucks defensively such that he provides below replacement defensive value, then the DH should logically be more valuable just by providing neutral defensive value, but WAR doesn’t see it that way.
L
“But if the 1B sucks defensively such that he provides below replacement defensive value, then the DH should logically be more valuable just by providing neutral defensive value, but WAR doesn’t see it that way.”
Yes, it does.
For the 1B. Their defense can be so bad that the DH is more valuable.
But, no, the DH’s value isn’t changed by what the 1B does. That would be dumb.
replacement was a bad word. Very very average is better.
br
“Very very average is better.”
Average has a lot of value
The vast majority of players are below average
@bullred An absurd deal. $42m guaranteed to a player who was a hair better than replacement level from 2020–2022, including -15 OAA over that stretch, and was only worth 1.8 bWAR in 2023, his ‘best’ season since 2019.
Even for a team desperate to sign a bat and who has trouble attracting FAs for some reason (SF is a great place to be rich, something true of most cities), this is bizarre.
@antibelt Now think about why that’s the case.
And yet, the experts who run this website predicted nearly an identical deal for Soler when the offseason started. Guess it’s time for you to start your own site for all of us to start following since you’re obviously smarter than everyone else!
And Kim is pretty decent too
Pitching wins championships.
The Rangers were 18th in team ERA and 3rd in runs scored but sure it was that pitching that won it for them.
There are always exceptions, but the general rule of thumb is that good pitching beats good hitting, especially if the pitcher and hitter have never faced each other before.
Besides, one of their pitchers, Montgomery, was likely the Rangers’ overall playoff MVP.
And the rangers playoff numbers were polar opposite during their amazing run to the ring knucklehead. Proving not only my point but showing time over time regular season stats mean SQUAT. You are dismissed.
King Buddha – If regular season stats mean nothing then aren’t you saying the playoffs are a crapshoot and not pitching wins championships? Also the postseason ERA was 5th out of 12 so they were still middle of the pack among playoff teams and they were 1st in terms of runs per game so I have no idea what you mean by the playoff numbers being opposite. Do you even look at the numbers?
Yes the playoff are a crapshoot. The numbers mean nothing during the regular season. Pitching wins playoffs.
as a Giants fan, I’d rather have players like Tatis, Machado, Kim, and Bogaerts..SPs like Darvish and Musgrove on the Giants..no reason for any Padres fan to complain about
The only one of those guys I would want in the Giants is Kim.
because of brain damage?
Lol. I get not liking guys on rival teams but to say you wouldn’t want Tatis or Musgrove on your team is certifiably insane. You can at least make the argument that Bogaerts and Darvish are on bad contracts I guess.
You can say that some of those contracts will age poorly, but you can’t say those players are not worth having in 2024.
I expect Tatis, Jr. to land in the top five for 2024 NL MVP.
Soler is a good add, too.
Tatis is a cheater. Understandable why some fans would not like him on their team.
Do you really think Giants fans (and most other teams too) can justifiably not like Tatis when they boast of having had years of Bonds and rode him all the way to the bank?
Tatis and Bonds don’t even belong in the same sentence. That’s why we boast Bonds, who with or without roids was a hofer.
You don’t like good players?
Thank you again ballz, I’d love to have Kim on the Giants too but no thanks to the big ego guys
Bonds is not in the hall. You can cry all you want that he deserves to be in there, but hes not.
I didn’t see his bust there?
Still in talks…I don’t know who’s crying, but whether or not he’s in the hall, is irrelevant to my statement. On the other hand, it doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be, as many players who used roids are in the hall…look no further than Piazza or the commissioner who allowed it.
Balk what is irrelevant is your response to my point that if you hate on Tatis for what he did, you can’t reasonably (key word here) justify Bonds.
If you don’t care about Bonds use then don’t care about any other player’s use.
Longtimecoming…where did I say I hated Tatis? And you’re right I don’t care about Bonds use. Do you care about Mike Schmidt’s amphetamine use? How about pine tar that pitchers used? How about corked bats, how about Ruth’s home run record year being in the smallest ballpark ever? Didn’t all of those things give them an advantage? Hall of fame is a joke!
Advantages in baseball, whether it is steroids, amphetamines, pine tar, corked bats, smaller ball parks, or higher mounds, will be used every day. If you asterisk a player or keep a player out of the Hall of Fame for taking steroids, then take out or put an asterisk next to every player who has ever used an advantage over another player. Period!
We’ll never honestly know if Bonds would have been a HOFer. All this talk about how he supposedly didn’t start juicing until such-and-such a date or year is garbage. You people have Walgreen’s receipts to back it up? For all anyone knows, Bonds cheated his whole career. And if you’re good enough, you don’t need to cheat.
Tell that to all the pitchers who used pine tar, (Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan etc..) is that cheating? Bonds no doubt was a hofer, no matter when he started. How about Mike Schmidt, you think he deserves to be in the hall as he admitted to amphetamines? You people and your narrow minded analogies about who should be in and who shouldn’t is what’s ridiculous.
Generally, steroids are used to help heal faster. It’s the HGH that was making them so much stronger.
Yeah the problem with Machado and tatis are that they have skills but aren’t good clubhouse guys, Darvish is a bad contract and so is boegarts and honestly pitching wise I am fine if the Giants just try out the young guys, there are a good 5+ starters that are ready to break the big leagues this year and Ray and Cobb will be coming back. I am more worried about defense and offensive production than pitching
Tatis never played a single game with roids… so no.
Wouldn’t care if Tatis did or didn’t play a single game or not with roids. With todays voters he can break every record in the books and won’t still get in the hall because of how backwards they are.
Balk – you didn’t but that is the problem. I was posting to Jeremy and his comment about how people don’t like Tatis for what he did – you jumped into a conversation and added your 2 cents to what I was saying to Jeremy.
If you want to do that, fine, but you need to maintain then context of the original conversation and not hi Jack it.
Bag – take a double check on Darvish’s so called bad contract.
Compare his AAV for next 3 years to some of the back end starters that just got 16, 17, 18 mil / year contracts.
I’ll take Darvish as my #5 for the next 3 years at his rate anyday.
Longtime…unfortunately it doesn’t inform commenters on who’s talking to who, as I was just commenting on the comparison between Bonds and Tatis not even needing to be in the same conversation as one is the homer king the other has a long ways to go.
A hypothetical parallel world where a PED user would still be a Hall of Famer without using those PEDs doesn’t matter, since we don’t actually live in that world, and the player did indeed take PEDs.
The only argument for Bonds is that he technically didn’t get caught red-handed by the testing program that didn’t start until after he had made a mockery (well, an even bigger one than McGwire and Sosa made) of the season home run record and was already most of the way to making a mockery of the career home run record and a few other records.
Lanidrac…you obviously have the opinion that steroid users shouldn’t be in the hall, and that they made a “mockery” by using them…so to be fair, shouldn’t anyone who “cheated” not be in the hall? Schmidt? How about Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan for using tar? Isn’t that a mockery?
Personally, I wish they’d let all of them use them. It’d make the younger fans come. That was a blast when guys were jackin all them bombs. Even Brady Anderson hit 50 and he was a leadoff hitter, lol. At least steroids, as they allow to heal quicker. Guys wouldn’t miss 2 months with a sprained ankle, etc. The HGH is what had guys like Bonds getting enormous. So keep that banned then since everyone wouldn’t wanna use it.
Without roids, Bonds was a HOF player, but he threw it all away with roids.
But man he was fun to watch.
Don’t think they were clocking exit velocities then, but did see many balls leaving the park in seconds.
Darvish had a terrible season and looks old. He made 20M last year and Tristian Beck was worth more in less innings.
Bogaerts, Machado, and Darvish are pretty bad contracts.
Where is the uproar the audacity of Soler not deferring any dollars? Not a team guy
You won’t want all those huge contracts for players in their mid-to-late 30s four or five years from now.
Good thing he is signed to a 3 year deal then
Another big contract? Really. If your going to spend it all starts with pitching.
Dice 66, Three years is not a big contract. It’s the 10, 11, 12, and even 13 year deals that are considered big contracts. The biggest problem with them is the years, not the money. Teams can afford the money. It’s why teams will try to get a guy for shorter deals with a higher AAV. And with Soler, it was 3 years or watch him sign elsewhere.
JM
“The biggest problem with them is the years, not the money.”
Soler signed for 3 years and $42 million. That has a present value of $37.3 million.
If he had signed for 10 years with a present value of $37.3 million, that would be 10 years and $45. million – $4.5 million a year. Or, if you prefer, 3 years with 7 years of deferred payments,
No team would have a problem paying that.
The present value of deals is what matters. That’s what teams and players look at. Then they structure the deal so it fits both sides.
filihok, Well, of course no team wouldn’t mind a deal of 10/$45M for a guy that could command an AAV of $15M. But the player sure would. That’s not an apt comparison.
A guy worth 3/$45M, would take a lower AAV over 10 years, but it would be far more than what you cite. It would be something in the neighborhood of like 10/$125M-$135M.
My point was that teams are much happier, and more comfortable with, 3/$45M than 10/$125M+.
JM
Depends if its their last contract or not
Can’t help but notice that Soler’s agent is NOT Boras.
Seems like a pretty iffy move, like so many of Zaidi’s moves. Hope for the best I guess.
Zaidi is only capable of half measures like this. Bellinger, a complete player who is younger and plays great defense at multiple positions is still available. This team will never compete with the big boys when the guy assembling the roster is scared of giving out long term deals to anyone other than the cream of the crop, who don’t want to play in SF anyway.
He wants ten years. No thanks. Still need another SP and hopefully Chapman at third.
I don’t think they are interested in Chapman after this Soler deal. The DH/corner infield/corner outfield rotation is already crowded. They were realistically able to add one guy to that mix and it seems like Soler is the one. Unless they trade someone they will have the following 6 players vying for 5 spots:
– Soler
– Conforto
– Yaz
– Flores
– Wade
– Davis
Chapman is certainly an upgrade over Flores or Davis, but that would require a big contract…are they willing to go there? Who knows…
Wade / Flores typically platoon. I don’t think it will be a big issue.
Chapman is only an upgrade over Davis with his glove, and even with that Davis’ glove is pretty good.
Would have preferred JD Martinez over Soler, he is so up and down, but it’s one of the additions SF needed..
And Cody Bellinger want a bigger, longer contract.
Jorge Soler is a safer risk.
The total risk aversion is the problem, unless complete and utter mediocrity is the goal.
If Bellinger is such a plus, why is he still unsigned? If every team feels like Zaidi, that 10 years and $200+ for a guy who’s been inconsistent, is too great a risk, why single out Zaidi for not doing something that apparently every other team thinks is stupid.
Because I’m a Giants fan and it’s the same story every off season with Zaidi, just substitute in different free agents. Soler is basically Hannigar, who they just had to ship out after year one of a three year deal because he was terrible. He was willing to sign a three year deal in the first place, which seems to be more important to Zaidi than actual talent, unless you are from Korea and have never actually played in the majors.
One thing that continually gets lost in the “Giants aren’t willing to sign the best free agents” argument is that they did have Correa. Yes they passed him up in a rather crappy fashion but the two sides did agree on a contract. Otherwise most of the other big names they pursued only dragged out the process to bid up their contracts, they had already decided where they were going to play. Harper might be the exception to that.
Every team signs FAs every season. So every team has new faces replacing others Why gripe about something that happens on every team in MLB?
Just because Haniger struggled out of the gate, and then got injured doesn’t mean that the story will be the same for Soler. Haniger was a highly ranked, toolsy prospect whose career has been short-circuited by injuries. But the talent has always been there.
Your theory that Zaidi signed Haniger only because he could sign him for 3 years is such an odd take, and far from reality. He was the 20th ranked FA by MLBTR and their prediction was he sign for 3 years.
Critics last year: Farhan sucks, if he was trying he would have signed soler. Critics this year: Farhan sucks why did he sign soler…..
You know the power will be there. That’s what they are after more than anything. They may not get very much for average but they will be able to have a chance to clear the bases with him up to bat.
The Giants haven’t had a 30-HR hitter since Bonds in 2004. Soler has as good of a chance as anyone since, so I’m down for this deal. They’ve got a glut of DH/1B/LF types, so perhaps they can eat some salary and deal one or two among JD Davis, Michael Conforto, and Wilmer Flores.
Wow
Soler should help SF compete in the NL West.
He is flawed – his RBIs and ABs vary alot, defense is OK.
If they use him correct and he doesn’t get injured he should help.
Maybe he’ll like his new homepark and teammates and be inspired by the history of Wiilie Mays, Willie McCovey and Barry Bonds and others.
Born in Cuba
Who gets inspired by a cheater like Bonds? And who cares where Soler was born?
Anyone who wants to see what the best swing of all time looks like. Steroids help you recover, not hit the ball.
And who cares where Soler was born?
====================
I do. The old Cuban players were larger than life. Minoso, Oliva, Tiant.
This is hilarious if you actually believe that.
@Ghost,Obviously with ot without steroids a MLB player needs the talent to hit MLB pitching. Bonds clearly had that and would ve made HOF without PEDs.
As for PEDs they do more than just help one recover. The Performance Enhancing part wasn’t added just because it sounded catchy. It helps build muscle, strength, speed, etc. And a crucial part of hitting is bay speed which obviously would be aided by Performance Enhancing Drugs. As to how much it helped in Bonds case we ll never know as he was a great hitter even before them. Without a doubt he hit the ball harder and further after PEDs though that is just flat out undeniable.
And if I note that Justin Verlander or Mike Trout were born in America, I get called a racist.
@I.M. Insane: Get a life
Plus they lie about their age – remember Cespedes who became a hot potato – went from Oakland to Boston to Detroit then the Mets – it wasnt just his falling off his horse injury it was also about his age – thats why the Mets won their contract dispute with him and it was voided – thats why Boston and Detroit unloaded him and played dirty not telling the Mets
Tigers3232, Well, it’s true what you say, that it helps build muscle, etc. and bat speed is a huge component to power. But steroids still don’t do that their own. You can’t simply take, or inject steroids, go sit on the couch, and be stronger. The weight-work, and conditioning, still needs to be done by the athlete. All steroids do is simply allow a guy to lift every day, without needing a rest day every other day. I completely agree with your last sentence, it’s just that Bonds still needed to work to get to that level.
They may not help you much with hitting the ball, but steroids certainly do help you hit the ball harder.
“…steroids certainly do help you hit the ball harder.”
Yes, steroids certainly do help you hit the ball harder, after you’ve done the work in the weight room.
I’m well aware you can’t just take steroids and get results. Point still stands tho if you have 2 players both with same training regiment and one takes PEDs the other does not, one is at a clear advantage.
Sad part in Bonds case he was on hos way to HOF already.
Flores is pretty much their best hitter. I don’t think a team trying to solve its mediocrity at the plate is looking to trade any of its best hitters.
And it’s really not a logjam. They have nine viable bats for the eight non-catcher spots in the lineup. Teams generally want to have nine or even ten players to be in a regular rotation of sorts.
Conforto Davis and Flores to the Mets for Alonso. A homecoming for the three
Mets-keteers. ( just joking )
Maybe the Cardinals can trade Libratore for Flores. I would be happy with that.
I’m happy for Giants fans. They deserve a win; hoping SF picks up one of the remaining pitchers as well.
Giants fans hate Yaz (career 114 wRC+ w/ plus D) but love this move (career 112 wRC+, zero D).
Somebody make it make sense
Woah since when did we hate Yaz, I love Yaz lol
Yaz is great but he has done most of his work in a platoon role- I would still 100% rather have him on the team than not but the production from his position needs a RH guy to platoon with him similar to Wade in that way
@pat
Depending on how good faith this question is:
1. Is Yaz really that hated?
2. Looking at Soler’s career wRC+ ignores that it took him about 5 years to adjust to MLB pitching.
3. Soler can MASH. He’s a flawed player to be sure, but it’s been a while since the Giants had a legit 30-homerun threat in their lineup.
Soler had a 95 wRC+ in 22 and was barely above average the 2 years prior to that. He’s not that good.
And yeah pretty sure about 98% of Giant fans on twitter hate Yaz. Thought it was at least somewhat of a representative sample
Most Giants fans like Yaz a lot. They even like Slater.
There will be plenty of at-bats for Soler, Lee, Yaz and Conforto.
Giants fans may dislike their owner and FO, but none of the players are particularly disliked.
At least Joc “Baby Panda” Pederson is gone
Manny, I love all of our players and I love Zaidi, I do not love the whole ownership group especially the Johnsons but I love the newest owner, Buster Posey.
Fans don’t hate the FO but somee very vocal fans do and mostly because they equate Farhan with the downfall of the club when that was the previous regime, Farhan just brought the team from a 98 loss team to a .500 one. Ownership is a tough one, it is a group and not all owners are bad but not a lot of people like the Johnson’s for good reason,I sure don’t. there are a couple of other crap guys there too but now that Posey is part of the ownership group you are actually hearing more from than than you used to.
Yeah we don’t dislike most of our players, mostly have a problem with some of our pitchers, or now ex-pitchers.
Just remember there are a bunch of idiots on Twitter and I don’t even need to get Political for this.
Tax is and has been a fan favorite for some time. Other wise this joke of a front office would have already traded him to Seattle for a player to be named later and their second favorite player cash considerations.
Yaz^
Agnes: most of Giants fan I know agree with you. Seriously, how can anyone hate on Yaz? Plays hard and sometimes plays hurt. A hustling baller. Never met the people Patthebat mentioned.
The main point of my post is that while most current Giants players are not extraordinary (other than maybe Doval and Webb), the fans seem to mostly like them. I have no idea where the one poster got that Yaz was disliked – he is one of the more popular players.
I think the Johnsons, or at least the oldest one, are disliked by some due to both far-right politics and not spending as much as perceived appropriate. Posey used to be adored but he is spouting some occaional right-wing comments these days, probably hasn’t hurt his reputation just yet. Zaidi gets mixed reviews for how the money has been spent, but no one really knows which decisions are his versus ownership, like with most teams.
I expect good seasons from Soler and a healthier Yaz.
dis – It’s impossible to hate the son of a legendary HOF’er.
Yaz? Grandson, right?
Yeah I watched his dad play as a kid in the minors, he was in the Padres system but never really made it, not sure if he ever debuted but was teammates with Tony gwynn, I even have a signed ball with both their signatures on it from back then
PtB
Better than looking at the past, is looking at the future, To do,that you have to look at the past. So, projections – fangraphs’
Solar 115 wRC+ 1,7 WAR/600
Yas 104 wRC+ 1.7 WAR/600
Well we needed someone to argue about after Belt left.
Seriously though it feels like the fans who love Yaz and the ones who hate him sort of self-silo. I almost never encounter Yaz haters.
Also 112 with zero defense means Soler’s offense is doing all the lifting with that 112. Having him as a primary DH makes this a great move! If they said he’d be our starting left-fielder I would be worried.
I cannot think of one Giants fan who is not firmly a fan of Yaz—he does everything well. His defense is Gold Glove (with a very accurate arm), his bat against RH pitching is good. He’s an excellent base runner. The only downside is his bat against LH, but not so terrible you wouldn’t want him in your lineup.
I literally own a game-used Yaz bat. We do not hate him at all
What do you mean Giants fans hate Yaz? Which Giants fans are you talking too?
Giants fans dont hate Yaz- this is bad info – fans love Yaz – I think you are confusing our disappointment that he is our best outfielder – more of a reflection of the front office than Yaz…..
yeah i agree we love yaz
Yaz and Wilmer are beloved in SF. Both are my favs to watch play for this team and great people as well.
I don’t hate Yaz and def don’t love the Soler signing
That Giants’ fans hate Yaz is news to me.
They finally did something !
But he never even played for the Mets…..
Geez, another ridiculously bad move by SF
Zaidi going 3 years on another one dimensional, No Glove, injury prone 1.8 WAR guy who has a hard time staying on the field and turns 32 years old in couple weeks.
Makes sense right ?
You do realize that 1.8 wins puts the math with the Giants making the post season and sitting 2 games back according to prognosticators as the roster sits right now
IMHO Solar will prove to be a good signing. He’s become a better hitter over time, and some stability with his contract situation, could be just what he needs. Massive power!
Soler is a very good signing for the Giants, but I do not see them as even close to the top three in their division or even close to a wild card without more moves.
Relying on the three young talented pitchers may be a good long-term strategy, but I do not think that it will bear fruit in 2024.
Yankees owe 5 years, $128mm on a one dimensional, No Glove, injury prone -0.8 WAR guy who has a hard time staying on the field and turned 34 years old a few months ago.
Makes sense, right?
Give Zaidi a break. It’s hard to get players to come to SF with the high rent prices and the oft chance that Godzilla returns.
When Godzilla played for the Giants he struck out a lot. Big strike zone. Lots of power but short arms. He couldn’t get the head of the bat on it. His D was okay, but when MLB decided you can’t use fire to stop players from reaching first base I think his career was over. I hear he’s doing good in Japan though.
Hideki Matsui played for the Yomiuri Giants, but never the SF Giants. And he actually had a much better than average K rate throughout his career. You don’t know what you’re talking about Vanta!! 😉
He’d make a hell of a 3rd base coach if they didn’t have to keep refunding the upper deck seats because they can’t see the game.
Don’t worry Ant-Man and the apes will stop Godzilla if he comes back
Monarch will coming to SF if godzilla returns
Interesting choice over JD Martinez.
Martinez is 36, which might have factored into it. I’d rather see this move for a 3 years than Martinez for 1 which is all I’d take a chance on.
I assume Martinez would be available on a shorter contract, which most teams would prefer, but maybe a longer commitment appeals to the Giants.
Soler has more pop!
Not really. Career slug: Solar .467, Martinez .524.
I don’t think JD Martinez reciprocated
Next shoe to drop should be JD Martinez to Angels to replace Ohtani the DH. Perhaps Blake Snell to replace Ohtani the SP. Makes too much sense.
Angels sure could use JD n Snell, plug sum holes
And still not make the playoffs lol.
In Anaheim’s defense, Houston and Texas have good rosters.
Signing all five of Snell, Monty, Belli, Chapman and JD makes Anaheim a dvision contender. Signing any one of them will not be enough to compete for a wild card. And I expect them to only sign one of them.
The Angels already signed Sano for the DH role.
finally sign a player w/pop, now sign Snell and let’s move towards baseball to make me forget about the Niners super bowl loss..
It’s almost like Zaidi gets a bonus if the team finishes at exactly .500. As a Giants fan I’m tired of these kind of lateral moves from a supposedly wealthy franchise. We fired the wrong guy when we let Kapler go.
If the franchise is wealthy but are hamstringing payroll, what good would firing Zaidi do?
I don’t think the franchise is hamstringing payroll; they’ve shown willingness to spend on multiple occasions. I think the problem is that Zaidi is too risk-averse.
He gave Jorge Soler his three year deal when reports are saying teams only want two years.
He signed a guy from the KBO for $130+ million.
He signed a reliever with the intent of turning him into a starter.
He traded for an injured player in hopes that he regains his CY Young form.
His moves this off-season are full of risks. You just personally don’t like the guys he brought so you’re creating a false narrative for yourself and masking it as criticism.
@pb both can be true, but ownership has seemingly only shown willingness on franchise altering players, but that hasn’t seemed to trickle down to non-superstars.
The Giants being “in” on almost all of the top free agents seems to indicate Farhan wants to add top guys, but ownership will only do it at the right price. (Also, free agency is WEIRD this off-season, too). So if that’s the case, any front office would have to navigate those challenges.
This is exactly the kind of levelheaded comment we dont like on this patch if world wide web.
I think the Giants fired the right guy, they just should have kept going is all.
If you signed him for 3yrs you need to crash course him at 1B. My presumption is that the SFG have little intention of putting Soler in the OF but it’s helpful to roster flexibility if he can take the field on part time basis. Looking ahead, 2024 is the last year of control for both Flores and JD Davis as well.
SFG did a good job with JD Davis last year, he was noticeably improved at 3rd. He’s not Machado or prime Longoria but he was good, not the liability he was prior season.
I like this signing. Will be fun to finally see a right-handed batter hit an opposite field splash shot.
That would be a shot ! It’s nvr been done ? A righty tomohawking ball to deep right n in the drink ? Piazza used2 launch sum deep opposite field shots, his ball carried.
Tomahawk would be tough because it wants to nose-dive. Low and way to get that backspin is the only way
Posey almost did it in Game 1 of the 2021 NLDS, but it hit off of a smokestack before it could reach the water.
I think this is a good signing.
Lucky for us he was only a 110 wRC+ against righties vs 181 against lefties last year. We only have righty pitchers lol.
His career wRC+ against righties is 107.
So padres are ok with this signing. Good job giants…
Really nice fit. Just true thump.
He’ll look like a steal during his hot streaks and like a waste of money during his slumps. But at the end of the year, the numbers are usually there and solid.
Would have been Bellinger if they didn’t waste the money on Amir. Massive failure and a slap in the face to Giants fans.
Amir was a minor league signing, that will only cost 1.35M, IF he makes the team. And on a squad with…ONE veteran lefty in the pen. That move made sense.
If the Soler deal is like $15M per year, or less, I guess I’m okay with this. Can we trade Slater & Davis for SP depth, then sign Chapman?
Catfish, you are so wrong it’s hilarious.
I was joking Agnes. I like the signing!
Don’t change Jimmy.
There are some that can see sarcasm.
@oldg
In fairness, @jimmy’s sarcasm is virtually impossible to separate from “fans” unironically making similar points.
@JimmyCatfish: Thanks for sharing that truly ignorant take
Next up is Bellinger’s three year deal somewhere.
Cubs!
RE JC
“Would have been Bellinger if they didn’t waste the money on Amir. Massive failure and a slap in the face to Giants fans.”
Reminder this is what fans look like when their teams win a,championship (or more) and then aren’t good for a decade. Miserable
Much rather be a fan of a perennial contender who only wins once in ten tries.,,
Apparently sarcasm is lost on you.
JM
Or
Poe’s law
The Jorge Soler signing diminishes the chances of Matt Chapman signing with the Giants.
Not really.
Why?
Unless they trade someone they will have the following 6 players vying for 5 spots (DH/corner infield/corner outfield):
– Soler
– Conforto
– Yaz
– Flores
– Wade
– Davis
As things stand, they don’t have room for Chapman without trading either Flores or Davis.
Seems plausible that they would sign and then trade one of those guys. Davis and Wade seem most likely in my view.
Precisely. Folks are missing the import of the Soler signing, which is “what comes next?” With the roster moves coming tomorrow to move Cobb and Ray over, the action on Boras’s clients will pick up.
Plus, we’re assuming Zaidi will fill holes by way of FA signings or nothing at all, when it is very likely he’s got a move pending by way of trade that could involve Davis and even Conforto.
rb305, Why would they trade Wade? He’s good defensively at 1B, had the highest non-pitcher bWAR on the team, and he’s cheap. He’s exactly the kind of player the Giants need.
And trading Davis doesn’t make a lot of sense either. He’s a FA at the end of the year, limiting his trade value. Signing Chapman for 6 years, paying him a ton of money, and getting a pennies on dollar return for Davis, all for a marginal upgrade at 3B, doesn’t make sense to me.
JM
“Why would they trade Wade?”
The answer to that is always because they think what they received in trade was more valuable.
This idea that teams shouldn’t trade valuable players is dumb.
Trading valuable players (should) brings more valuable returns.
filihok, I don’t need you to state the obvious. Of course every team would listen to trade proposals for every player on their roster, and would make that trade if it improved the team.
“Trading valuable players (should) brings more valuable returns.”
The reality is, when talking about most teams, most players won’t bring back enough value to make the trade. That was my point with Wade, which I think applies to Ha-seong Kim as well, that a parallel move is useless. The average number of trades in a season is less than 3 trades per team. There’s a reason for that.
I like Wade and Davis, and would like to seem them back on the roster in 24. Wade is affordable, no doubt, but it seems possible, with attempts to improve the roster with high end free agent signings, that someone else would be on the move. Wade and Davis are not DFA moves, in my view, so a corresponding trade is plausible due to the roster crunch, commitments to high end free agent signing, and the need to vastly improve that offense.
I see you point about both, and that is why I like them sticking around, but something will have to give. Especially if they bring in Chapman alongside Soler. This all seems logical and I’m just copying every writers commentary at this point.
ASapsFables, Totally agree. Before Soler signed, they could have moved Davis to DH. They can’t do that now.
3 years and now the parks playing against him? Man this is gonna age about as well as I thought.
His two best home run totals in a season came in KC and Miami, neither of which are even remotely known as hitter’s parks. He took a long time to adjust at the start of his career, but now he has. If he’s healthy, he’s hitting around 30 homeruns per year in SF.
That’s a 4 year split and two contracts sprinkled in. San Fran hasn’t had a 30 hr bat since Bonds in 04. If you think Jorge soler is going to power it out as much as bonds did while raging think again. Easily taking the under on 25 and 250. For the record he only has 3 20 hr seasons in his career and 3 in the last 5 seasons. Not buying the hype at all on the one Martinez was the perfect sign for San Fran. He just checks off every box and then some.
I never said he would power it out the way Bonds did. I said Soler should be around 30 home runs per year if healthy. That isn’t an outrageous prediction.
How many bona fide power hitters has SF carried since Bonds in ’04? The answer is none. Despite that, there are multiple examples of hitters clearing 25 homeruns in SF since 2004.
– Post-prime Aubrey Huff hit 26 there in 2010
– Prime Sandoval hit 25 in 2009
– Bonds hit 28 at 42 years old in 2007
– 34 year old Ray Durham hit 26 even
The park is a factor, of course. But just as significant of a reason for the lack of 30 hr seasons in SF is that they haven’t carried a single prime-age power hitter for an entire season since then. They don’t construct their roster with that in mind.
Soler is a prime-age power hitter. His best power years came in stadiums that abundantly pitcher friendly. They also came in years where he played a full season. If he plays a full season, he will easily clear 25 homeruns. Even old(ish) Aubrey Huff and Ray Durham were able to do that. Soler will probably hit sub-.250. He’s not a batting average guy, so that’s not surprising. That said, I expect him to be in the 27-33 homerun range if he is healthy and assuming SF gives him a full load of ab’s instead of overly platooning him like they do with some of their other hitters.
I’m skeptical that JD is the slam dunk better alternative. I do think JD is a better hitter (obviously). But his age has to be a question mark at some point.
Soler is a good start at addressing lack of power in Giant lineup & Soler is full-time DH. Soler does create a logjam at DH (Davis Flores Wade). Does mean Conforto will have to be full-time OF & occasional DH.
Zaidi can’t stop now. There are other full-time moves that still need to be made like signing Chapman at 3B & top of rotation SP Snell or Montgomery – trade for another everyday big bat (Arozarena) & versatile IF (Adames or Kim).
Holy whut? I’m gladly eating my words….
Curious to see the #’s on this and if he did a better AAV than what his final year with the marlins would be. Of course if he signed a 2-3 year deal it’s worth more than 1 more with the marlins, but it took so long for him to sign I’m curious if he took less than what he was hoping for
Soler will always be remembered for his monstrous home run for the Braves against the Astros and Garcia in the World Series. I’ll never forget it, nor the reaction of that lady in the crowd and Dusty’s reaction. A beautiful home run that’s still in orbit.
youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=6IdbOxI2N7I
I wish him all the best as a Giant and I hope he does well.
Hopefully he stays healthy all 3 years. He was a beast for Miami last year. If I was the Giants i would have signed Martinez instead. Probably could’ve had him on a 1 or 2 year deal and he has a much better track record.
So, instead of J.D. Davis with his 1.2 WAR, they’re getting Soler for an extra 0.5 WAR.
Interesting enough, in 48 PA at Oracle Park, he has a 155 wRC+ and a slash line of .317 / .417 / .512
Very expensive 0.5 war!
@old
Soler is who he is, which is a bat-only player that can change a came with one swing. Those players are downgraded by WAR, but if used sparingly on a roster – especially a team like the Giants that need an offensive boost – can still be very useful players.
42,000,000 for a DH that hits .249 ? Makes sense.
I mean Teoscar got 1 year $23,000,000 from the Dodgers and no one is complaining.
I wish the Giants would get some pitching
They got Robbie Ray.
I think Ray will do well there once healthy.
eddie murray (steady eddie!)—the Giants have a ton of exciting young arms all poised to come up in the next year or two, just you watch! It’s super exciting!
DINGERS!
Very good deal for the Giants. I’d say almost under market–I thought he was worth more than MLBTR predicted tbh. Giants waiting till Feb was smart.
I think Soler took a loss here. He’s going from paying no income tax in FL to paying CA income tax. That extra $6 million is wiped out.
I feel for him
With inflation it’s not even worth it, I’ll keep my job at the public library tyvm
But sir if ppl cant go to library how will they post bad comments on this website?
Start a GoFundMe
bba
I think it is about the extra $26 million he earned.
You are spot on bballanalyst. His new contract is +7.7% per year, or $1M. But his state income tax rate goes from 0% to a graduated rate that tops out at 12.3% for every dollar earned for every game played in CA. The Giants play 97 games in CA, or 60% of their total games. That’s roughly $1.03M per year in added state income taxes. So it appears Soler will will net less money on his new deal compared to what he would have netted had he not opted out. The only winner may be his agent — if the agent’s take is based on a set percentage of the annual contract value.
mytaxi
“Soler will will net less money on his new deal compared to what he would have netted had he not opted out. The only winner may be his agent ”
There are also the 2 more, guaranteed years. Those seem important
bballanalyst, It’s a mystery to me why people worry about how much income tax a player will pay in one city versus another. They’re making millions after tax. Maybe it’s important to them, but who cares how much tax millionaires pay?
JM
“It’s a mystery to me why people worry about how much income tax a player will pay in one city versus another. They’re making millions after tax. Maybe it’s important to them,”
That is why people care. To help them analyze the contract the player signed.
How much a player pays in income tax has zero effect on anything baseball related. That’s between him and his account, and has no effect on how his team deals with payroll, or the roster.
Hey, if people find the state income tax that a guy will pay interesting, go ahead and analyze it. I don’t get it, but knock yourselves out.
JM
“How much a player pays in income tax has zero effect on anything baseball related. That’s between him and his account, and has no effect on how his team deals with payroll, or the roster.”
I’ll say it again
“To help them analyze the contract the player signed.”
“To help them analyze the contract the player signed.”
That analysis only has an impact on the player’s income. It has nothing to do with any baseball aspect of the deal. If you’re that into non-baseball tax analysis, I’ll say this again.
“…go ahead and analyze it. I don’t get it, but knock yourselves out.”
player pays in income tax has zero effect on anything baseball related.
========================
That would only be true if players did not care about their total take-home pay. Not that it is a major consideration, but if a player didn’t care if he played in Arlington or LA, LA would likely have to offer maybe 5% in salary.
If your budget is $200M, that is $10M less in payroll that you can afford.
“That would only be true if players did not care about their total take-home pay.”
That’s not true at all. Obviously players care about their income. But what a player pays in taxes has nothing to do with the team. Tax might be an issue pre-signing. But once a guy signs the tax is a moot point for anything baseball related.
Does the amount of your tax, and take home pay affect your job? You might ask for a raise if you think you’re not taking home as much as you’d like, but it has nothing to do with the day to day work you do.
yes, but he will find out sooner or later – especially with CA readying to increase taxes on certain income levels at least for games in CA
bball He gets to live in the Golden State, which is vast improvement over Florida!
@bball
He had $15mm on the table with the Marlins. If he were concerned with income taxes, he would not have opted out.
da
False
He now has $42 million
And 42 >>> 15
Taxes ain’t that much
@fili
I actually agree with your premise with regards to taxes. And maybe I was not being as clear as I thought I was, but my point was that if Soler was so worried about being taxed, he would’ve held onto his $15mm tax-free dollars this year rather than opt out in hopes of more money and risk being taxed.
da
A person can be conserved about something but not let that thing be the only factor
That’s called being reasonable
Haniger out Soler in. DeSclafani out Ray in. I like what the giants are doing this offseason!
A heavy increase in strikeouts on both sides.
Soler is more durable and brings more power than Haniger. Ray has way more upside than DeSclafani. They are solid – albeit imperfect – moves.
I agree! Although to take it a step further, I feel like it is more like Joc out, Soler in. And Haniger out, Lee in.
The offseason really hinges on how good Lee actually is. They really need him to play at about an all-star level.
Just in time for tomorrow’s roster moves w Cobb and Ray.
Made too much sense not to happen and his power will play at oracle park. In theory they should still be able to get one more player (Chapman still makes a ton of sense) but I wouldn’t doubt if this is what they roll into 2024 with.
How will they make that fit in terms of playing time though? Chapman will be the every day starter and Soler is probably a daily starter as well (either at DH or in the OF). So now Davis, Flores, Wade, Yaz, and Conforto are basically vying for playing time in 3 positions (whatever is left over between 1B/DH/1 Corner OF spot). They would have to trade someone.
If they got Chapman I feel Davis would be the odd man out. He raked in 2022 with the Giants and the first half of 2023 but he fell off of a cliff after ASB. Could still see a lineup with Soler in LF, Slater in RF, Flores DH, Davis 1B and Chapman 3B against tough lefties
Chapman in and Davis out is the upgrade the team needs. If they are aggressive, that’s what they’ll do.
Their lineup would look so much better if Conforto hit the way he’s capable of hitting.
When Cobb and Ray are moved over tomorrow, keep an eye on what the Giants do regarding Chapman and even Snell, especially if it is tied into a trade of Davis and others.
I think the odd man out is Conforto. The Giants really don’t want him in the OF very often and now with Soler doing most of the DHing, Conforto is problematic.
Flores and Wade are safe at 1B (with Flores filling in occasionally for Davis at 3b and Wade helping out in the OF). What SF can get for Conforto (with only a year left on his contract) remains to be seen).
I presume remaining money goes to a front line pitcher (Or Zaidi trades for one).
@Pete
I feel like Conforto is safer than Davis, but only because they have fewer outfielders, and Conforto has much less trade value. Though, trying to hide Conforto in left isn’t the most comforting proposition if his bat doesn’t come back around.
Gmen777, I Have to disagree. Now that Soler has been signed, Chapman makes zero sense IMO. I agree, Chapman is an upgrade over Davis, but not a huge one. Why sign Chapman to a big contract that may not, and I think will not, age well, forcing a trade of Davis. The return for Davis won’t be great because he’ll be viewed as a one year rental. I just don’t see the big commitment to Chapman being worth the risk and what would amount to a marginal upgrade.
Agree to disagree. Chapman’s defense is considerably better than Davis (or anybody else we run out there) and we have the highest ground ball rate of any team in baseball. On top of that his offense should be better than Davis as well. I think he’s worth it tbh, but if he signs elsewhere I think you look at the pitching market instead.
Well I agree Chapman is an upgrade, but perhaps that upgrade is only defensive in nature. Over the past 3 seasons, Davis has a 112 OPS+, Chapman has a 108. And Chapman’s defensive numbers have declined as well.
But what’s missing from the reasons you cite, is whether that upgrade is worth 6/$150M? I don’t think it is just for his glove. Especially for a guy on the downside of his career with declining numbers. I see Chapman as a potential Longoria 2.0.
I wonder who is getting dealt or bumped from the 40-man?
Ray and Cobb are both going on the 60 day dl, so nobody is getting bumped.
That’s an affordable 30-HR bat – good deal.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. Pending a physical hits different with the Giants.
That happened once. Once is not a trend.
Except for 2019, playing with the juiced ball, Soler has accumulated 2.4 career bWAR. Only 2 seasons above a 0.9 WAR.
He’s very streaky, but it’s not an egregious amount of money or years for a bat-only guy.
Had a slow start to his career while trying to adjust. He’s adjusted and is a premier power threat.
Soler is a client of the MVP Sports Group.
Alias is a show about a spy
Happy for Jorge. He bet on himself and won.
This is a team that needs Bellinger and Snell if they want to compete at some point,
This is a pretty good point. People criticizing this deal need to recognize that the problem isn’t that SF signed Soler. It’s that the rest of the team is lacking a star-everyday-position player who hits at an all star clip. It’s a collection of role players. Maybe Lee will be an elite leadoff hitter and maybe Conforto will get back to his best levels that he had in NY…there’s just not a bat in this lineup that can carry the load though, meanwhile LA, AZ, and SD all have multiple elite hitters.
If the Giants wanted a RH power bat, I’m sure the Yankees could’ve offered Stanton and a bag of money for either Davis or Flores.
I doubt ANYONE wants Stanton payouts or injury vacations
Da
“doubt ANYONE wants Stanton payouts or injury vacations”
Someone would take him if the Yankees paid down enough
Like Oakland.
@Dogle
“If the Giants wanted a RH power bat, I’m sure the Yankees could’ve offered Stanton…”
If I wanted to go for a swim, I could put on my trunks and jump into a pool. Or, I could have somebody push me off a boat in the middle of the ocean. Both options fulfill my desire to swim, but it doesn’t mean they are both good options.
Inconsistent streaky hitter who hasn’t been good over the full length of his career (a whopping 5.1 bWAR for his ten seasons). He’s also moving into a park that suppresses his one good trait: he hits a home run now and then. My guess is that this contract turns sour quickly.
Haters gonna hate, power is power, Soler Power is much needed in this lineup especially right handed power.
As someone mentioned earlier it’s the power in the lineup, we need it and there’s nothing not many like Soler. Sure he hits 240/315/520 34 homers that works.
It’s another piece, please get Snell or Monty and let’s build for 2025.
Good luck on 34 homers in San Fran’s park. Soler has hit 30 homers exactly twice in his career. I can think of better ways to spend 42 million bucks.
Marlins park isn’t exactly a hitters haven.
dennymagnet10 hours ago
Haters gonna hate,
=========================
Why is it hate to point out the obvious shortcomings? Last year was Soler’s second best year, and he still only had a 1.8 bWAR.
Well he had a slow start to his career. But I agree, this is not the ideal ball park. That said, if anyone is going to be able to overcome the challenges of right-handed power in SF, its Soler.
Could be a very good signing, all he has to do is hit and stay injury free.
Poor man’s Juan Soto
What happened to the “set roster “ and the fans are “delusional “remarks Jackhoff ?
I never said anything about soler I was talking about guys wanting 6 to 10 year contracts that you delusional Giants fans seem to think the Giants will give out. I was right
You said the roster was set and they were not signing anyone, but go ahead and try to change history.
Wow, what I say is historical? I’m honored!
In the end they had to replace Joc and hannigers bat with someone. I set the bar low and now I’m pleasantly surprised. Soler is a pretty good addition, much rather have three years of him then be stuck with 10 years of Cody or six years of Matt Chapman.
Agree.
Still think they have another move or two coming though. One should be pitching.
So, the roster was set, except for the signings that hadn’t happened yet?
Do you know how to read?
Yes I do know how to read, and I know how to spot BS.
You’re a pro at that. Every time you look in the mirror.
“You’re a pro at that. Every time you look in the mirror.”
Wait. So, I’m BS? Wow, You write English good.
Yup. Your face is. Clown.
Tell him oldgfan! Jack said yesterday like a hundred times that the Giants roster was set and there was no way we were signing anyone else. Literally an hour later Soler was signed! Lol! That aged really well ha ha ha
I never mentioned Soler in fact I suggested they sign him in a different article since Matos and Ramos are busts and I feel the front office feels the same. Signing Soler just proves my points.
Didn’t say that “a hundred times” and he wasn’t signed “literally an hour later”. Clown. The story broke at like 1 am.
Jack Hoffman, This was your post to the “Latest on Jorge Soler” article on MLBTR yesterday (2/12/24).
“Lmao the Giants aren’t signing anyone else. Their roster is already set.”
Yeah right, I’m the one with the BS issues.
You’re a real weird dude.
So, I’m weird for simply quoting you word for word to show your BS? You try backtracking, saying your comments had noting to do with Soler, except it was in the comments about the latest on Soler.
Stop digging yourself a hole. I’ve been wrong plenty of times. Stop with the doubletalk, trying to edit your meaning after the fact, and just own up to it. Accept that your post was wrong and move on.
You gotta be the third biggest clown on here behind bluebaron and trumbo redux. You really dug for that comment of mine, copy and pasted it, and thought you were holding me accountable for some random hot take comment I made on this stupid little site? What a clown.
Such a clown. This comment section is your whole life. Lmao
I don’t have to accept ish you clown. I make hot takes and I don’t care if they’re right or wrong. You’re a nobody you aint gonna tell me nothin fool. The fact you on here crying like a lil baby just proves that I own you.
Wow.
Love this move. A bit risky? Sure, but worth it. Bellinger is an even bigger risk. 10/250 for a guy who had one good season after several horrendous ones? And he had that playing in Wrigley. Now that’s risky.
Hi TellItGoodbye! It’s almost time for baseball! Go Giants!!!
Can’t WAIT for Opening Day! The welcome to Jorge and Jung Hoo will be deafening. And Montgomery. Oops, did I leak info?
Homers to right field shortest distance at the park.
Soler was a late bloomer, but Soler doesn’t hit squeakers over the fence either. I stick with 30+ homers this year.
As for the cost wake up to the fella who said other ways to spend $49 mil. Good deal and yes I’d take Soler over JD.
The Giant’s home park favors left handed power. That said, I wish Soler a great 3 years in SF.
My mistake meant right handed or left field distance. Doh!
Nice signing. The Giants were looking for HRs and they got the top option left. Decent AAV considering the going rates this off-season. Apparently waiting pays off.
dy
“Apparently waiting pays off.”
He got almost the exact contract that was predicted at the beginning of the off season
More salary inflation occurred than predicted.
Citation requested
How can we know that before all the contracts are signed?
How do we know those other contracts weren’t overpays because teams signed players too quickly
Right. Only now he’s (Soler in this particular situation, but anyone usually) gotta scramble to get a place, etc. That’s why I wouldn’t wanna wait. Especially if you have kids and gotta get em in school, etc
Yes if anything Soler waited out the Giants.
Was the contract under the predicted amount or not? The answer is in the first paragraph of the article.
This just makes me so happy; no idea if he’ll help the win/loss record but he makes SF so much more fun
Exactly! He’s Pablo lite!!
How about those full throttle Red Sox?
After CA 13 % tax Solar nets 4 million over the deal he walked away from. Hope he really prefers SF to Miami.
Soler has a three-year deal now, not a one-year deal. Huge difference.

Are you saying you like what the Giants have done this offseason?
So far, yes.
They are not done either.
They tried to get the two top big guys but in the end you can’t force someone to sign. It was Dodgers from the start with those two. They continue to try to improve the team. We can second guess every move but in the end only time will tell if they are good or bad.
I don’t deny the effort but is the team actually better? Sure doesn’t seem like it to me.
Time has been telling. They have been bad 4 out of the last 5 years.
Ha ha. Gold.
Soler is a safe signing at 3 yrs 42 mil – Jung Hoo Lee is not – SF needs to bring in a Chapman and Bellinger and try to trade players for pitching – of course there isnt much SP out there worth a flip — so bring in Jordan Montgomery – if Giants want to spend there it is – paying that $$ to Jung Hoo Lee could have went to one of these guys
Soler has produced at a rate of barely over 1 win per 600 at bats and has missed lots of time since his debut. He’s the opposite of a safe signing.
Giants traded or gave away all their pitching depth in some ridiculous buy high sell low strategy.
“All their pitching depth” ?
More like two under performing contracts when they have two rooks who outperformed them last year.
More arms in the minors too.
They were paying both Stripling and Descalfini a lot of money. And they got back Ray who is inconsistent and hurt and has a giant contract.
I don’t think any team this offseason has done less with more. The Giants added a lot of payroll. But they don’t appear to have improved much at all.
And we are going to see a bunch of this young arms come up this year and next oldgfan! Super exciting!
“Prior to the deal with Soler, San Francisco’s rough $155MM payroll was more than $33MM from their 2023 levels…”
Yep. Added so much payroll.
Ya he pretends to know about a lot of teams for the sake of argument, but then the crap just don’t stick to the wall.
Startin out the offseason with designs on Ohtani.
Finishin off guaranteein a third year to Jorge Soler.
Giants be like that.
Freaking Mets couldn’t give Soler 3/$42 which is only $14 per year for a player than can give you 30-49 hrs a year damnnnnn, they better sign JD Mart.
That’s an exaggeration; He’s been in the league 10 years and hit over 30 HRs twice and he’d be the Mets like 7th best defensive outfielder. $14/year for a lifetime .242 hitter who will be 34? Pass
Jv and ms
Oof
Bad bad analysis
Using career stats makes no sense. What a player has done in their career doesn’t say much about how they will do in a given year.
If it did, Giants should sign…Pujols and Cabrera
And using batting average…that treats a home run as equal to a single to evaluate a hitter like Soler is just dumb
Ok let’s get rid of averages and career highs and then use what to evaluate player performances? Your feels?
MD
Nah
Projections. Like the ritual operate of feels.
I don’t get Soler’s call on signing with the Giants at a park where the porches are longer in rf and the ball doesn’t carry to right. Stats will be better on the road.
Statcast overlay shows of his 36 HRs last year 32 would be HRs at Oracle
So he should be able to perform and he is getting paid
Citizen1, The Marlins park has a PF for HRs of 86, at Oracle Park it’s 84. Not a whole lot difference. Soler hits a low percentage of his HRs to RF. The vast majority go to LF.
Pull hitter. Built for bonds who lh hitter. My impression Giants stadium is the ball doesn’t carry to rf, even hit by a right handed pull hitter.
I don’t think it was built for Bonds. Why would a team build for 8 years of a player when the park is going to be there for decades?
In 2020 the Giants moved the bullpens to the OF, and closed off the arcade. Surprisingly the shorter distance to RC had less impact than the closing of the arcade. The wind used to blow in from RF and knock down anything hit in that direction. Balls carry better to RF now.
But the short RF line is misleading. The RF wall angles away quickly. LF doesn’t angle way as severely as RF. Here’s the comparison
RF: 309′ to the pole, straightaway is 385′, and RC is 415′.
LF: 339′ at the pole, straightaway is 354′ and LC. is 399′.
Plus the walls in RF are 20′ and 24′ high. In LF they’re 8′ high and in LC they’re 7′ high.
Sweet.
This is going to be a fun Season I can feel it.
Chapman’s probably not on the Giants’s radar with this move, no need for another RH bat. Not a lot of landing spots left for him, had him going to the Giants in the contest, and Soler signing back with the Marlins. Cubs are probably kicking the tires on Chapman hoping his price went down.
I expect Soler to increase his walk totals as pitchers either go for the K or just avoid getting punched thereby increase his walks.
Soler will carry low batting average and clog the DH spot away where there are times that Murphy or Flores could produce, but either way at least they got 1 power bat – they still need more of it so they just dont pitch around soler to the point he is swinging to swing at bad pitches
Good for Soler. Congrats to him.
Note to Kim Ng: See Soler’s contract and see Avi Garcia’s. I know that the Marlins GM gig kept getting in the way of your self-promo stuff during your time with the Marlins, but I’m still puzzled how you thought committing so much to Avi was a good idea, even if you only did it in between breaks for your self-promo opportunities.
Note to Avi: Give us production that makes you worth more than Soler. Get back to using whatever it is you were using to have the year that got you that contract. Heck, you may have no choice since Trey Mancini or Troy Johnston or one of our other guys competing for a roster spot may be getting you DFA-ed if they outperform you this spring.
Why so much and so long
Who were they competing against for his services at this point….feels like only themselves at those levels.
Everyone was predicting 3 years at somewhere between 36 and 48.
Red Sox.
In November
AB
That’s how predictions work
You male them BEFORE the thing happens
That’s right. That’s generally when the professionals at ESPN, MLBTR etc make their predictions.
Giants fans are desperate for anything. Soler hits a homerun every 20 at bats. He would need 600+ ABs to get 30. You really think he will get 600 ABs or even 500 or 400 with the way the Giants platoon players? And without anyone to protect him, he will get pitched around. Why take a chance with him when you got the mighty Casey Schmitt or the league average players like Yaz or Conforto or Luciano, Bailey or …
“True Giants Fan” sounds like he’s desperate to complain about anything.
New coaching staff should be better
Jorge better than Joc
Ray (even for half year) better than Disco
Murphy better than Sabol
Hicks better than Stripling
Lee (probably) better than Haniger
Luciano (probably) better than Craw
Team has improved.
This team won 79 games last year. You say they have improved. To what? 80, 81 wins? The fact that you use probably a few times tells me they are rolling dice and pinning their season on a wing and a prayer. When your goal is to make the playoffs as a wild card team, it tells me that you are already resigned to losing half of your games. Not good.
You have no idea of their goals.
I use the word probably, and it tells you what they are doing ?
All I know is you are not a “True Giants Fan”
Can’t wait to hear your crap when they sign Snellinger.
The Giants need some more proven household named players! Its the biggest thing missing last few seasons. This is a great addition without breaking the bank/too many years.
@deGrom/Langford Texas Ranger (In Bauer We Trust): If Soler can perform like he did in ’23 throughout the life of this contract, it’ll be 100% worth it.
And if he performs like he did in 2022 then this will be Mitch Hanniger all over again.
@True Giants Fan: Haniger’s ’23 was significantly less productive than Soler’s ’22. Go ahead and go all in on the doom & gloom though, big guy.
Go ahead and drink the kool aid – and while you are at, buy some season tickets so that Charles Johnson can donate to more right wing nut jobs.
I hope there isn’t a “player option.” It was great to see them ship out Stripling who exercised his “option” – “Hey I did nothing for my $12 million, can I please have it again?” Teams vastly undervalue those options. Giants have been repeatedly burned by them, ending up holding on to the bad players and losing the good ones.
Kiki
“”can I please have it again?””
He didn’t even have to say “please” since the team was already contractually obligated to give it to him.
Only 13 million per year? That’s a bargain if he continues to hit 30+HR’s….Twins could have afforded this, but Xid rather take Bellinger. He can play some first base…
