The Giants’ three-year, $42MM contract with Jorge Soler was finalized and announced earlier today, so Soler, manager Bob Melvin and president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi were now officially able to discuss the deal with the media. Melvin told reporters (including the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser and NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic) that Thairo Estrada and Wilmer Flores played a key role in helping recruit Soler, as the three players are friends. This helped lure Soler to San Francisco and the West Coast in general, as Soler’s preference was to stay on the East Coast, ideally close to his home in Miami.
Soler will now head west for the first time in his career, after playing with the Cubs, Royals, Braves, and Marlins during his 10 previous Major League seasons. Though Soler’s production has tended to vary wildly over his career, he comes to the Giants on the high of hitting .250/.341/.512 with 36 homers for the Marlins in 2023, bringing some needed pop to San Francisco’s lineup.
This power naturally lends itself to the cleanup spot, and Melvin said that Soler will primarily hit fourth in the batting order and act as the regular designated hitter. New arrival Jung Hoo Lee will hit leadoff and be the everyday center fielder, flanked on the grass by Michael Conforto in left field and Mike Yastrzemski in right. Since both corner outfielders are left-handed hitters, Soler might get some time out of the DH spot when a southpaw is on the mound, though Melvin sees the DH role as a natural way to keep Soler healthy and free of the nagging injuries that have bothered him in recent years.
In general, it seems like the Giants are going with at least slightly more of a regular lineup under Melvin, as opposed to the matchup-centric style of revolving lineups favored by former manager Gabe Kapler. There are still some obvious platoon or timeshare possibilities built into the roster, including Austin Slater’s role as a right-handed hitting complement to the lefty-heavy starting outfield. However, Melvin said Slater is a little behind the other outfielders in spring work, as Slater spent the offseason recovering from right elbow surgery in October. It doesn’t seem like Slater is in danger of missing Opening Day, though Melvin said Luis Matos will get some extra work as a center fielder.
Since it’s only mid-February, the chance still exists that the Giants might yet add another regular to the mix via free agency or trade. Though some gamesmanship must be acknowledge whenever an executive says they’re happy with their team, Zaidi inferred that further moves to the big league roster were unlikely, if not impossible.
“It’s a little bit more disruptive to add at this point. Anybody who’s a free agent, we’ve theoretically had three and a half months to figure out a deal and if it hasn’t happened yet, at some point organizationally, you just need to turn the page and focus on the players you have,” Zaidi said. “You never rule anything out, whether it’s now or May or June or whatever, but you know, at this point, the calendar makes any further additions unlikely.”
The Giants’ offseasons under Zaidi have largely been defined by the superstar players they didn’t sign (i.e. Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto) than the players they did acquire, leading to some consternation amongst the Bay Area fanbase. Still, Slusser notes that the Giants’ signings of Soler, Lee, Jordan Hicks, and Tom Murphy ranked the team second behind only the Dodgers in free agent spending, and San Francisco also completed a major trade in acquiring Robbie Ray from the Mariners.
Zaidi defended the Giants’ pursuits this winter, saying “we’re going to continue to take the big swing in free agency when it makes sense and some of the guys that we’ve pursued and have landed are top five-10 players in baseball. I’ve said this about a couple of them: I’m always surprised there aren’t more teams in on them rather than that maybe they wind up somewhere else. You expect things like this to be competitive and we always feel like we have to be able to pivot when things don’t work out. We think we’ve added some exciting players and I think we feel that energy in camp.”

Giants edge the Padres for third in the west at this point.
More complete team.

I’d say that’s there goal, and to stick around with the dbacks for wildcard spots.

If they had any pitching behind their ace and their closer, maybe.

I see the Padres as better than the Giants, though the Giants have three rings so you can’t knock them.
Tatis, Bogey, Machado, Kim, Crony and Campy, Merrill, Profar
Over
Soler, Yaz, Estrada, Davis, Flores, Conforto, Baily, Wade, Marco
Darvish, Musgrove, King, Vasquez, Thorpe, Avila
Over
Webb, Harrison, Hicks, Winn, Cobb, Ray, Beck. ) Ray and Cobb are injured, Harrison, Winn and Beck are inexperienced)
Doval over Suarez though
AndyWarpath
Both teams flirted with .500. Padres subtracted. Giants added. No reason to expect the Padres to be significantly better this year than last. Giants fall a bit short this offseason for sure, but they should be in the conversation for a wild card spot.
My how the turns have tabled
Giants needed a lot to go right to finish around .500 padres had a lot go wrong especially in extra innings to finish around .500
Padres got better defensively at ss and LF and added more starter depth.
Easy choice is padres finish better
towinagain
How does Profar’s bat compare to Soto’s?
AndyWarpath
The giants were 9 games over .500 through July. I’d say a lot went wrong for the Giants too since they went 18-34 to finish out the season.
Padres lost Snell, Lugo, Martinez, and Eacha. They did not add “more starter depth”
oldgfan
Like an overcooked spaghetti noodle
My how the turns have tabled
How does anybody but sotos defense compare to sotos defense?
Who cares if you score 4-5 runs but give up 6-7
Winning 1-0 is better than losing 7-4
My how the turns have tabled
“Did not add more starter depth”
Yeah replacing an injured Wacha and Lugo who missed good chunks and we had to use Avila and Waldron in when they were out really hurts.
Martinez was a set up guy who couldn’t make it as an actual starter but pen and long relief he was ok.
Only name you mentioned that gave them an actual season was Snell
And really? Bringing in pitching from the Soto trade plus pitching they already had in Avila and Waldron plus minor guys getting a year closer like Snelling didn’t add starter depth? Guys simply being healthy unlike Wacha and Lugo adds more starter depth than they had last year
King Vasquez Brito Thorpe totally didn’t add starter depth replacing Snell Lugo and Wacha. Dumb
AndyWarpath
Snell, Wacha, Lugo, Martinez – 571 IP, 91 GS
King, Vasquez, Brito, Thorpe – 232.2 IP, 27 GS

Not for this season. Which is what the original question was. *copy and pastes stats from random other website*….. see I win
AndyWarpath
Dude is trying to say the Padres have more depth this year than last year because of their additions. That is emphatically false. Innings pitched and games started are not “random stats.”
Simm
I’ll take the padres lineup and starters with the giants 2-3 guys both out for 1-4 months.
I’ll take the giants closer
Plus if the giants are indeed done adding the padres are going to still add to this team.
If the giants pitching was healthy then they may get the edge.
Fred
Webb finished 2nd in the Cy. Winn was worth more than Darvish in less innings, I want what you are smoking.
YaGottaBelieveAgain
IMHO I think SDP & SF might be a toss up. I lean SD if I had to choose 1. Success of both bullpens to hold leads and dynamic of each managers getting the most out of his players. Managing egos and more. Both teams getting a new Mgr. Melvin and Shildt (from StL). Interesting to see how effective 2 new RPs from Asian leagues will be. If I was a fan of either I would be pleased to grab a WC and then anything could happen

If the giants are done signing free agents then the spots are drying up. The cubs, angles maybe the Yankees or perhaps the Red Sox decide to spend some money. Guess I wouldn’t be shocked if the Mets decided to sign one. Either way the prices are going to drop.
solaris602
If the asking prices don’t change I expect at least 2 of the big 4 to look toward June or July signings or even sitting out the entire season. Everyone thinks that’s crazy, but it takes 2 to tango.

DJboy28 2
Might not have landed the top free agents but so far I believe that the moves that we’ve made will help our team and I’m hoping that we sign either Rosario or Anderson for our infield and I’d like to sign Clevinger for our pitching
Gmen777
I actually like every single move they’ve made this offseason except the Hicks one (I get as a worst case you just shift him back to the bullpen where $11M AAV is not too awful). I still think they get one of the big four left from Boras if for no other reason I just don’t see whose really available to sign them
oldgfan
I think they are still in on Snell & Bellinger. Reading between the lines here I feel Zaidi has his final offers in though.
It’s like a staring contest with Boras to see who blinks first.
sanfranb27
They are looking for a left handed bat at the SS position. I think a trade for Edman is a better use of their resources. But I wouldn’t mind signing someone like Clevinger who ended last year strong and has more left in the tank.
oldgfan
Just say no to grown men in pigtails.
Pete'sView
I’ve felt all along that Edman made the most sense & that the Cards were a good match. Clevenger, however, is (or was) a clubhouse cancer and is no #1, 2 or 3 and thus only holds back the young Giant arms. If they are going to add a starter by FA or trade it better be a solid #1 or 2.
Gmen777
Agree with your take on Clevinger, go big or go home. Webb, Snell/Monty, Harrison, Hicks, Winn/Beck to start the season with Webb, Snell/Monty, Ray, Cobb and Harrison down the stretch would be a step in the right direction
TurnOffTheTV
How is Clevenger a clubhouse cancer??
pogo
Two years to recover then upset when worked back in slowly is all I remember about Clevenger. Never heard “cancer.” Think that got thrown out there to lightly

hard pass on Anderson and Clevinger..those egos don’t belong in the Giants clubhouse

Soler means Flores, who was their best hitter last year, will be playing a lot of 1B. And JD Davis is stuck at 3rd. So there’s absolutely no room for Bellinger or Chapman now. Both are gonna end up in Chi-town, looks like.
splinkysf
There was never room to add a guy whose peripherals show last year was due to a lot of luck. Zaidi is too careful to consider that guy at this point in his career.
oldgfan
Flores gets a shout out for being a good team player. Working to get Soler to sign is an unselfish act on his part, when in the long run might cost him at bats or a job.
Pete'sView
Chapman is almost useless to the Giants and expensive too.
TigersLoveCinnamon
While jd looked great the first half, he regressed horribly in the second half. Whether that was cause of his injury or not, he was awful, a great defensive 3b would help Marco out tremendously so he can ease into the league. So no he isn’t useless, they have no backup plan at ss
Jean Matrac
Actually they do have a backup plan in house. Estrada and Schmitt can both play SS. Signing Chapman makes Davis virtually useless. 1B, and DH are covered, and he has little trade value.
While it isn’t clear whether the injury was to fault for his fall off, his monthly splits suggest it was. July and August were his only awful months, but he rebounded well over the last month of the season with an .849 OPS.
giants forever
infield defense was a problem last year. think we need Chapman and move Davis to 1st. Wade and Flores are good bench players, with the latter playing super utility. still think we have a concern at short. we need a solid backup plan.
Seamaholic
Flores is a flat better player than Davis.
Jean Matrac
Why would you sit Wade, a guy who had 2.7 WAR last season, in favor of Davis, whose WAR was 0.9? The upgrade for Chapman’s glove isn’t worth the cost, the commitment in years, nor the disruptive effect on the IF.
Pete'sView
Davis does not get credit for his defense. He may not have Chapman’s glove but it’s not far behind & his offense is better than Chapman’s.
TigersLoveCinnamon
He was a borderline all star in the first half, and gold glove, but he looked almost feeble in the second half. Whether injury or not, is cause for concern
geg42
Not an utterly indefensible offseason. But not a clear improvement. Too many “ifs” in the rotation, rhe defense
geg42
& the lineup. C+
AndyWarpath
It’s a clear improvement. Soler > Pederson, Murphy > Sabol, Melvin > Kapler, Hicks > Wood. Even if Kim is below average in his first season, I think it’s safe to assume he’s better than the collective -.9 bWAR accumulated by Matos/Haniger/Wisely. It might not be enough, but the team is better.
solaris602
Marco Luciano the starting SS if the season started today? I’m not saying I’d make Tim Anderson an offer, but I’d definitely check in to see what it would take to bring in Amed Rosario for a year or two. At least he can hit.
John Bird
Rosario’s defense is horrible at SS. I’d rather have Crawford than Rosario. A bit early to throw Luciano under the bus. People forget he’s a top ten SS prospect. Give him a chance and if it doesn’t work then look to trade for someone.
TigersLoveCinnamon
Marco’s also extremely young. I think he’s got a bright future, but they don’t even have a backup currently unless you count thairo or Schmidt. Anderson makes a lot sense to bring in, especially if he can play second.
John Bird
Agree they should have a plan B. I’m guessing they are counting on some combination of Schmidt/Lopez/Fitzgerald/Wisely. Would like to see them sign or trade for a veteran bench guy.
User 112202899
Like.. Crawford?
DanUgglasRing
Frazier and Schmitt can both play SS decently to well. No sense in blowing money on chapman or getting a mid tier meh player like Anderson or Rosario.

I think this is a better team than last year. Not great, but better, at least on paper. And they got rid of Stripling, Wood, Haniger, etc. And the young guys will get the opportunity to play. We’ll see.

I said all along that the Giants roster was set and Zaidi was done adding and I was right! Zaidi himself just said it in the article. Who’s looking like the fool now?

Is it possible to be correct and look like a fool?
JoeBrady
Did you say that before or after they signed Soler?
Jean Matrac
JoeBrady, He not only said this before they signed Soler, but he said it in an article entitled “The Latest on Jorge Soler”, before the signing
Jack Hoffman
It was these clowns I can’t even remember who but pretty sure jean matrac was one of them who said the Giants were going to get Snell Montgomery Bellinger and Chapman. I said no way, the roster is set, and they all attacked me and now they are jealous because I was right and they are all wrong. Like I said all along, the roster is set clowns. You all look really dumb now.
Jean Matrac
“…pretty sure jean matrac was one of them who said the Giants were going to get Snell Montgomery Bellinger and Chapman.”
Maybe someone else did, but I never said anything like that. But it’s obvious why you want to bring in those guys. You want to shift focus away from Soler.
When there’s an article about the status of the still unsigned Soler, and you post that the Giants’ roster is set, and they aren’t signing anyone, it’s pretty clear you just can’t own up to being wrong. And then on top of that, then claim to have been right all along.
mab51357
You sound like a little kid. Neener, neener neener. I was right and you’re all wrong. And yes, we are all jealous because we’re all clowns. You’re a bit pathetic which is worse than being a clown. Lol. Have a nice day.

You’re wrong, it was after the Soler signing. You are all just mad because I won over you and am right. You are both like little kids.

Lmao the Giants aren’t signing anyone else. Their roster is already set.
Jack Hoffman
Scroll through old comments? Get a life man. You are wrong and I am right and its got you upset. Just admit it.
Jack Hoffman
Yep I predicted that the roster was set and I was right. Cry harder.
Jack Hoffman
You’re just mad because none of your predictions were right. You literally thought the Giants were gonna go after the top free agents. Thats why I called you delusional. And then you attacked me for my prediction and now I am right and you can’t move on from it.
Jean Matrac
I’ve given you proof that you called the roster set before they signed Soler. How about you show me proof that I ever said the Giants were going to sign any of those guys you listed. You can’t because none exists.
All I ever said about Snell is the asking price was far too high, especially in years. And I am totally on record as posting that I did not want either Bellinger or Chapman.
You obviously have a memory like a sieve, since you believe I posted anything close to what you assert. But also because, despite proof, you unbelievably state that you were correct. And just as obvious, you are just plain wrong as your posts show.
Jack Hoffman
You’re just upset because I know way more about the business of baseball than you do and it embarrassed you. I one-up’d you on here. This comment section is for the best of the best and you got embarrassed. You gotta bring your A game here next time.

Just for your info. I was never in on the conversation you “won over me”. Pretty good “win” by you although I was never even there.
Jack Hoffman
Good. I’m glad I won you over.
mab51357
I don’t think Jean is upset at all. He’s just pointing out facts. It’s a word you’re not too familiar with. And if you participate in these conversations to “win” then you’re even more pathetic than I originally thought.
Jack Hoffman
If he’s not upset then why is he continually trying to prove his point that is incorrect? I was right when I said “Lmao the Giants aren’t signing any big time free agents. Their roster is already set.” The facts back this up, not emotion.
Jean Matrac
I’m not upset. I’m not the one lashing out, and calling people names. You’re the one that seems to have gotten riled.
Exchanging posts with you is like arguing with a 12-year old. You have no argument about being right, since you’ve provided zero evidence to back up your claims. And conversely, there’s no doubt you’re wrong as your old posts clearly show,
You totally lack integrity, and all credibility, and I’d be surprised if very many people want to have an intelligent dialogue with you about baseball. I don’t. I’m done.
Jack Hoffman
I have a high genius level iq so sometimes I don’t communicate well with others. I actually have the exact same iq as Musk. Also, I had insider information regarding Soler days before the story broke so technically, I was right, because I already knew about the Soler signing way before you peons did.

So all this time you’ve said Zaidi and ownership are lying. False promises. Etc. But now you’re saying you believe them. You are a true Jack Hoff man.

Dude, I’m just wondering how you decide what you want to believe. It seems you believe in whatever makes you sound smart. Therefore you’re never wrong. Kinda easy to be “smart”. But you’re not. You’re just a Jack Hoffman. You’re name. Don’t look at me cuz I didn’t decide on that name. But a “clown” might.
Jack Hoffman
Huh? I predicted that Zaidi and the Giants were done shopping and I nailed it. Go head, keep crying if that makes you feel better scumbag.
mab51357
So when Zaidi signs a couple more depth pieces before opening day will you remember this conversation?
Jack Hoffman
Wasn’t talking about depth pieces. Was talking about the top free agents that delusional Giants fans thought we were going to sign.
mab51357
So depth pieces don’t count as “shopping”? Thought you said the roster was set. Adding lesser FA’s by opening day doesn’t change the roster? You basically craft everything you say to make yourself right. I still can’t get past you being pathetic but I’ll get over it. Yep. Done.
Jack Hoffman
Clown what move did they make you moron?
Jack Hoffman
They didnt sign anyone you clown

I don’t think the season has started yet. You’re kind of in a rush to crown yourself baseball god. I’ll wait until the season starts

It’s Zaidi who looks like the fool now, just as he has the last 5 years, where the Giants are a collective 100+ games behind the Dodgers. I’m guessing they finish 25-30 games out of first place.
foppert2
lol at the worn out dodger stat. You forgot to call him “farthqnds”. Now there’s something to make someone look like a fool.
tedtheodorelogan
I’ll stop dropping that stat when it stops being true, or starts trending in the other direction. In order for that to happen they need to finish ahead of the Dodgers in the standings. That was always the goal before Farhan came along, not limping in the a 3rd wildcard spot.
Jean Matrac
That stat is absolutely the dumbest stat I have ever seen. Over the last 5 years:
The Astros are 39 games behind the Dodgers.
The Braves are 41 games behind the Dodgers.
The Rays are 45 games behind the Dodgers.
The Yankees are 57 games behind the Dodgers.
The Padres are 109 games behind the Dodgers.
The Red Sox are 110 games behind the Dodgers.
The D’backs are 126 games behind the Dodgers.
And the WS champion Rangers are 148 games behind the Dodgers.
How many games a team is behind the Dodgers tells you nothing about that team.

More Zaidi excuses trying to justify his offseason transactions & closing up shop for this offseason.
And remember Zaidi said he was going to be aggressive this offseason. Not more excuses “I tried but the player(s) chose another team. All Zaidi does is speak out of both sides of his mouth.
How can Johnson Baer & Posey believe Zaidi’s done enough to make the Giants competitive?
How can Zaidi think he’s done enough to satisfy the fans. Hopefully the fans will continue to criticize Zaidi & also let Johnson Baer Posey see empty seats until there’s a reason to support the Giants.

Drafting, development still lacking after Farhan was brought in
Free agents are just window dressing – until they can develop multiple players across the diamond nothing else will really matter

I think they’ve had a pretty good off season, but don’t see the point in saying they’re probably done. No fan wants to hear that. Would like Montgomery over Snell because of his consistency. Perhaps at this point, he would take something with an opt out clause or two? Who knows how many deals Johnson has squelched with Farhan being the fall guy when they couldn’t close the deal?

If Johnson is the problem then fans need to keep the HEAT on him & at the same time don’t let up on Baer Posey & Zaidi.

The more I think about, the more I think this is mostly Johnson. The team will be better, but so are the Dbacks and Dodgers. Farhan isn’t without fault, but he’s a pretty intelligent baseball executive
DroppedThirdStrike
The real goal is to get to the next offseason and into that free agent pool while allowing the younger players to continue to develop.
The goal is absolutely to not overpay for the overpriced second tier talent this offseason in an attempt to improve for a single season and clog up payroll for the foreseeable future. If snell or bellinger become available on short-term deals then we’ll see the giants as players in free agency.
They can compete for the wild card spot but not at the expense of the next competitive window they’re just now about to open.
tedtheodorelogan
Johnson is 90 years old and lives on the other side of the country. The team is just a means to the real estate development going on around the park. He doesn’t care if they are good or not, he can still sell for a few billion whenever he wants.
foppert2
Yeah he does. They want to win. He just doesn’t do it like you want him to and your ego can’t handle it. So instead of dealing with the reality, you claim they don’t want to win.
tedtheodorelogan
Dealing with reality? The reality of the situation is they have been trash the whole Farhan era besides one fluke season. I can admit that no problem. It’s you who cannot. I don’t have an ego at all when it comes to this team. How could you when they are this boring and unwatchable? You need to check your ego and realize that winning is no longer a priority for this real estate development company, and that they do just enough baseball wise to keep useful idiods coming to the park and buying gear.
foppert2
Makes me laugh that people who support the team are idiots.
They want to win. They want to spend money to win. It’s obvious. What they don’t want to do is give the superstar money to not superstars. You don’t agree with that and so roll out the “they don’t want to win” narrative. Just because they won’t do it your way. It’s all ego and petulant child.
ForeverGiantsFan
They need another bat. Farhan has money to sign Chapman and remain under the 237 million threshold for 2024. Their starting pitchers are young and inexperienced (Snell if not Chapman). Fans deserve an exciting team.

Snell should. Maybe an albatross waiting to happen, but he’s still a wildly accomplished pitcher that would make any rotation better.
Humm bumms
Chapman isn’t the bat we need. Davis will hit as well as him. Defense is a different story.

I think the Giants are much improved over last year, we just need to hold it together till Ray and Cobb are back. I would also rather at this point that the Giants don’t sign guys and leave themselves with little room to add next year. From what I’ve seen the free agent class next year will be worth spending money on.
AndyWarpath
This is the story every year. Save for next year. It’ll be better next year. Giants will get their guy next year.
As a fan, I’m sick of it. At this point, I’ll take an underwater contract just for the short term dopamine hit.
tedtheodorelogan
Totally agree. Not like they will get the guys they really want “next year” anyway, and will settle for more tier C type free agents, like always. Pay Snell. Don’t care if it works out long term. Their current MO is trash.
dubtastic
Totally agree Warpath, it’s tiring getting disappointed every offseason..baffles me that FZ claimed they had an “identical” offer the Dodgers gave Ohtani, but I call BS cuz this FO has been so fricken cheap..it’s so easy to make that claim after everything is said and done..I get that it’s Ohtani but if the Giants had that kind of money, why not spend a third of it towards Snell at this point cuz I’m pretty sure we won’t land Burnes next offseason..
foppert2
I call BS on your BS. It’s obvious what went down with Ohtani. The agent told teams the offer that needed to be made to be considered. Nothing more, nothing less. He then chose the team he wanted. Farhan gave it away when he said “I would be surprised if all teams in on Ohtani didn’t make that offer.”
dubtastic
good call..nonetheless, if the Giants had that type of budget for one player..why not shell out a portion of that money on Snell or Monty
foppert2
The years you have to commit to is my guess. Flexibility limiting. Im good with holding onto the flexibility so they can sign the star they want. Stay in the game with the big boys and persevere. They will get one.
tedtheodorelogan
“They will get one”. I gotta hand it to you, it takes a ton of commitment to be as wilfully in denial as you are.

Nope. They got Correa. They will get another one. No special commitment required.,Just got to look at it with a mature adults perspective. Give up on the juvenile rubbish and give it a go.
mab51357
Agree with you and I’ll add that I think Ohtani knew before the season ended that he was going to sign with the Dodgers. I think most top free agents have a pretty good idea where they want to sign provided contractual parameters are met. He likes LA and wants playoffs. Dodgers met both those parameters. Dodgers and Ohtani worked with each other on making the contract work. Good for them. I still hate the Dodgers. Lol

He also hasn’t been very good overseas, there’s a reason nobody will touch him
Nevrfolow
Giants just gave Pablo a NRI and you think Bauer is more washed up than him?
oldgfan
Yes.
And he still smells like a Dodger.
Nevrfolow
Low risk. If he sucks as you say, then cut him. But we need a Draymond Green/Pete Weber like player to make things exciting.
stephaniebpetagno
Low risk? I can’t think of a higher risk signing than Bauer.
PKVA
Bauer with the whole sex allegations wrap will never be accepted in SF…
Robert Cain
Very disappointed their (Giants) not going to add Chapman, Bellinger, ect. No way they can compete with the dodgers! If you were going to spend all the money on Shohei, why not add both to make it interesting. Giants fans should raise hell! The gm gotta go!
DroppedThirdStrike
They’re not gonna compete with the dodgers, not for years. Shohei made sense because he’d be part of the plan for the next decade. If the free agent they sign this year isn’t going to be a centerpiece player in three or four years time then it’s a waste.
If you’re clamoring to overpay for league average defense at third base and be stuck with the decline just as the window is opening I don’t know how to help you except to explain that that is about the worst possible thing Zaidi could do.
mab51357
Yep. Well said.
foppert2
Because you are stuck with them for years and years and it limits your ability to sign a genuine star.

“We think we’ve added some exciting players and I think we feel that energy in camp”
Yeah, well, your roster sure looks like a below .500 one again.
TigersLoveCinnamon
They’ve improved the roster, and were basically 500 last year, but okay great analysis
Sadler
Then I would be remiss if I didn’t thank you for that great analysis in rebuttal. Thank you for such great insight.
TigersLoveCinnamon
I’m still convinced the giants are trying this year out to see what they have on the farm, then plugging with the free agent class next year.
foppert2
Zaidi doing his bit for the MLB anti Boras’ campaign. MLB working hard at diminishing his star with the players before the next CBA. Stearns giving a bit of “why bother offering an extension when Boras is your client”, now Farhan indicting it’s all too late for his FA players. They are working it.

Hiring Melvin is the best decision in years. Kap was so into himself and looking the part, his moves were pure paper, low on instincts. Melvin is older school now and brings the baseball acumen the Gs need greatly. I’d say the leash is short on Zaidi. He needs to show the org is improving. Over the last few years we have gotten worse with his free agent signing. So not much praise for off loading bad contracts for guys he wanted in the first place. I hope this hot seat will scare some fire into him, Maybe a serious mid season trade. But I still think they need a new face of baseball ops in SF.

I like the moves they made , lee, Soler, Murphy,, and Hicks but my biggest concern is relying on the young pitchers. They lost 730 veteran innings frim last year’s staff and added hicks amd possibly Ray for the second half. Cobb is 35 amd coming off hip surgery. Can we really depend on him coming back as strong as last season?
Lineup we can live with, but a 170-190 starter innings would be a huge bonus for this team. I dont mind Adding Chapman and trading Davis.
mab51357
Going out on a limb here but I think this whole conversation might still be a little premature. Regardless of what Zaidi said. I still believe there is an addition coming. Just a matter of whether it will be the quick flurry of mainly low profile players that Zaidi always adds right up to opening day or one more meaningful lineup or pitching addition. I think most of us still hope for the latter.
brucenewton
Id prefer their chances with Montgomery and Bellinger signed.
PKVA
I’m most excited about Melvin!!! Could not stand Kapler and if this team is not noticeably competitive by the end of the season, I suspect Farhan is gone. I still really want to land Bellinger and would have preferred the Soler money to have gone to Bellinger but if there is a state down with Boras and that price tag is down from his wanted $200 mill to $150 for 6 years I think that is a kick ass deal. Chapman is completely unneeded and would be shocked if they spent money on Bellinger they would think they would have a need for with Snell or Montgomery with Ray and Cobb hopefully fully in the rotation by mid-season…
TellItGoodbye
Love the Giants, love Yaz, but he’s injured AGAIN! It’s always something with that dude. Time to trade him to Boston and let Matos, Ramos, Meckler, etc take over.
GSWfanklay
The rotation could be a beast at the end of the year. If they can play defense and pitch I actually like what they have done this offseason. Assuming the Korean kid is a success and a CF for the future
