With less than a month remaining until pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Dodgers to introduce Hernandez:
The Dodgers have announced that outfielder Teoscar Hernandez will be made available to the media via Zoom later today. The virtual press conference is scheduled to begin at 5pm CT this evening, with GM Brandon Gomes also expected to be made available in addition to Hernandez. The addition of Hernandez may prove to be the capstone on an incredible offseason for L.A. headlined by the signing of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. Along with Ohtani, the club has revamped its starting rotation by signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto as well as dealing for and extending Tyler Glasnow. Meanwhile, the outfield mix has seen a similar overhaul with the addition of right-handed bats in Hernandez and Manuel Margot who can complement existing center fielder James Outman as well as Jason Heyward, who was re-signed early in the offseason to patrol right field.
2. Will the Giants keep adding to their rotation?
San Francisco entered the offseason with a clear need for rotation upgrades, and that need was only exacerbated by the announcement that veteran righty Alex Cobb underwent hip surgery in late October and is expected to miss the start of the 2024 campaign. Without Cobb as part of the mix for the Opening Day rotation, the Giants had only ace Logan Webb locked into a rotation spot for the coming season with youngsters like Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn and depth options like Ross Stripling penciled in to fill out the rest of the group. Since then, the Giants have made a pair of additions to their rotation, though they’ve both been somewhat unorthodox.
The club landed left-hander Robbie Ray in a deal with Seattle, though the southpaw isn’t expected to return from Tommy John surgery until sometime this summer and San Francisco gave up a potential rotation piece in Anthony DeSclafani to complete the deal. Aside from that trade, the club’s major addition to the rotation has been landing right-hander Jordan Hicks on a four-year deal over the weekend. While the club has reportedly signed Hicks to be a starter, the flamethrower has just eight starts in the majors under his belt and has struggled to a 5.47 ERA in those 26 1/3 innings of work. Will these upside additions be the only rotation upgrades the Giants make this offseason, or will they seek the stability of a more surefire starter? Top-of-the-market lefties Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery remain available, but options are dwindling after that duo with the likes of Mike Clevinger and James Paxton among the best starters available in the next tier down.
3. MLBTR Chat Today:
Now that 2024 is upon us, are there any questions burning in your mind about the offseason with Spring Training a matter of weeks away? Are you wondering what’s next for your favorite team, or perhaps curious about what the market for a particular free agent looks like? If so, tune in this afternoon when MLBTR’s Steve Adams hosts a live chat with readers at 1pm CT. You can click here to ask a question in advance, and that same link will allow you to join in on the chat once it begins or read the transcript after its completed.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dodgers are pursuing Jansen, hopefully the Sox won’t eat a huge amount of his contract like they usually do.
And no thank you to Clevinger, what he did was awful.
LordD99
I reject this trade as Jensen is one of the closers on my AL-only Roto team!
Beyond my own selfish needs, wouldn’t you prefer to pay down part of the contract for a better return?
C Yards Jeff
If Clevinger falls to 1 yr deal territory, I could see my Orioles making an offer. FO has a rent history of giving opportunity to a player with past questionable behavior/activity. IE. the Dark Knight
C Yards Jeff
@JoelP, agreed. Meant to say “recent” not “rent” history. IE since Elias has been GM and John Angelos owner (circa late 2018). John’s old man Peter would’ve balked at the Dark Knight deal.
Paleobros
Wait, is this the real Joel P or imposter Joel P? Tell us something only the real Joel P would know.
stymeedone
Its HIM!
Fever Pitch Guy
Lord – I would, if the Red Sox were operating as one would expect from the 3rd-highest revenue team in MLB.
But since they have become cheap (in relation to their revenue) and have publicly stated they can’t afford the SP they want until they get rid of more salary, it would be much better to have that extra payroll flexibility by not paying down part of his contract.
That’s what my favorite team has become, unfortunately.
LordD99
@Fever, I admit I am a bit perplexed at how the Red Sox have operated in recent years.
JoeBrady
perplexed at how the Red Sox have operated in recent years.
===========================
It’s really only one year. In 2022, we were #5 in payroll. We are not going to out-spend NY, NY, and LAD. Philly was the only team to outspend us that we really should’ve been able to maintain pace with.
Fever Pitch Guy
Lord – I agree, most people are perplexed …. and we know it’s not just about their cheapness since the 2019-2020 offseason. They don’t seem to have a longterm plan, no direction, no consistency, and no transparency.
They don’t want to overpay for elite talent, but they are willing to overpay for declining and often injured players. Clearly their reliance on analytics hasn’t been working, and we all know both Bloom and Breslow are big into analytics.
JoeBrady
wouldn’t you prefer to pay down part of the contract for a better return?
===========================
I’d pay down everything, if the return made up for it.
RynoScoobs
Jansen is still performing reasonably well and within career norms. They shouldn’t need to eat anything.
Troy Percival's iPad
He can still pitch, but Cora is too stupid with bullpen management. Dude has had well-documented heart problems for a while, and Cora trots him out for the 3rd consecutive game (yesterday was a doubleheader) and wonders why he gets shelled
Fever Pitch Guy
Ryno – Within career norms? Heck no. He did start out well, but overall he had a very mediocre season for a closer and his numbers declined drastically.
2nd-highest ERA in his career
Highest WHIP in his career
Highest OPS in his career
Lowest Strikeout percentage in his career
Highest Hard Hit percentage in his career
Highest Average Exit Velocity in his career.
And he pitched by far his fewest innings since his rookie season (not counting 2020 Covid)
The dude is 36 so it’s highly likely he will be worse this year, not better. He was a massive overpay and everyone knew it even before last season.
drasco036
What he did was awful? No. What he was accused of was awful but MLB investigated and found no baring to the claim, hence, why he was never suspended.
Fever Pitch Guy
drascoo – It wouldn’t be appropriate to discuss what he did to his baby and Baby Mama, but MLB had no evidence such as video and there were no witnesses so they had no choice but to conclude the investigation with him agreeing to submit to evaluations by the treatment boards that cover domestic violence and drugs of abuse and also agree to comply with any recommendations those boards make.
drasco036
Exactly, there was no evidence, what so ever. After interviewing 15 some people, collecting text messages and videos what have you, there was zero evidence what so ever.
So you are choosing to believe an accusation of a woman with absolutely zero facts and zero evidence.
Case in point, there was so hard evidence against Addison Russell, no charges but baseball still suspended him for 40 games. If baseball thought Clevinger did what was claimed, he would have been suspended
JoeBrady
“Feelings over facts” is the new mantra for America.
Like you said, Manfred will suspend a player for bumping into someone on a NYC subway during rush hour, The fact that Clevinger received nothing means that nothing happened.
Fever Pitch Guy
drascoo – You think MLB has integrity?
So because MLB “believed” JT Watkins was the only member of the Red Sox organization involved in the 2018 cheating scandal, you think nobody else was involved … just him, not even the convicted cheater Cora.
Well alrighty then …
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – How about you? Do you really believe only Watkins was involved in the 2018 cheating scandal?
drasco036
Sign stealing and MLBs stance on domestic violence are two separate things. Look at MLBs track record when it comes to DV, yeah I’m pretty confident if MLB sniffed an actual event took place Clevinger would have been suspended at a 20 game minimum.
It’s MLB, not the NFL. MLB has no tolerance for DV.
JoeBrady
Do you really believe only Watkins was involved in the 2018 cheating scandal?
========================
I didn’t pay that much attention. My guess is that everyone was doing something and, either we did something slightly worse, or Manfred thought it was our to take a beating.
I generally have faith in Manfred’s decisions.
Scott Kliesen
“…what he did was awful.”
What he was accused of doing was awful. Considering MLB didn’t punish him, it’s fair to say it couldn’t be proven he did what she accused him of doing.
I personally don’t lump him in with Bauer and Urias.
Fever Pitch Guy
Scott – I agree with you on Bauer, he did nothing wrong. I haven’t followed the Urias situation close enough to form an opinion, but it seems like what he did was the worst of the three.
BlueSkies_LA
Where did you get the information that the Dodgers are going after Jansen? That rumor hasn’t made it here AFAIK.
Fever Pitch Guy
Blue – Please remember, I’m just the messenger. Haha!
One team that has been mentioned as a possible trade partner is the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. “Kenley Jansen, mentioned in the same report, is indeed available and wouldn’t look bad back in a Dodgers uniform,” Heyman said.
BlueSkies_LA
FPG, this sounds like a sportswriter noodling around rather than reporting on any sort of active rumor.
And not to restart a debate that should have ended a long time ago, it really helps to understand the difference between the law and adopted MLB policy. For reasons that completely escape me, few seem to be able to make this absolutely critical distinction.
Mojo37
ain’t happening
JoeBrady
It wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever for the LAD. Philips out-performed Jansen by a fair margin. And Graterol & Ferguson look like better 7/8th inning guys.
Dodger Dog
Dodger fans would love this but he really isn’t the best fit on their roster.
BlueSkies_LA
Exactly. They finally settle on Phillips as their closer, and now they’re going to add Jansen? What’s his role? The good news is this “rumor” doesn’t seem to be based on any reporting, just some sportswriter’s speculations.
Salzilla
Giants are in serious need actual starting pitching, that’s bananas. Ray isn’t back till August, Hicks hadn’t been a sp and doesn’t have a great history of health, Cobb is out. After Webb you have Stripling and Winn? Yeesh, that’s dire. If they were ever really suitors for Yamamoto then they really should make a run at one of the top 2 pitchers, but I feel like with the pitchers returning, though, they’d probably rather go to a one year deal.
tedtheodorelogan
And that is exactly why they will never win anything with Farhan in charge. When he inevitably misses out on his top free agent targets, his back up plans are terrible. They got a dude who can’t pitch until August and a guy who isn’t actually a starting pitcher. If the Dodgers missed on Yamamoto you can bet either Snell or Cease or Bieber or Montgomery would already be on their roster by now.
Big whiffa
I think snell shunned them. They should have been all over him and Montgomery. That would have silenced the haters. But instead of silencing them – I have turned into one as I’m no longer a farhan supporter
tedtheodorelogan
Anyone who is still a Farhan supporter after 5 years of this crap is doing some serious mental gymnastics.
bag o ballz
Reports are that snell was asking for 300mm and that is why the Giants and Yankees pivoted. If he sticks to those guns he isn’t gonna get signed
D-Nice
I completely agree. He’ll come down during spring training or take a ridiculous AAV for a short deal would be my guess. Nobody will give him 300 mil. They’d be better off giving into one of those GM’s for SP’s with years of control. Unfortunately, those GM’s agree too, apparently. Which is why they want the world. Particularly Cease with his 4.58 ERA.
User 4223176798
Kool-aid drinkers. No brain to think for themselves.
filihok
Bw
“That would have silenced the haters”
This is about one millionth on the list of priorities for the Giants
Imagine thinking that educated and knowledgeable people think like this
Big whiffa
I’m not a giants fan. He also deserves massive credit for overachieving with his roster. That was the worst 100 win team of my lifetime and maybe in baseball history.
That being said, he’s tried to compete on the big stage w the big boys and has gotten embarrassed over and over again. And that international signing from this year will be worst deal of offseason- especially compounding if they would have just allocated those funds elsewhere
foppert2
Ha ha. Yeah. Like the haters matter. Have you not realised that by now ? They don’t care what the internet thinks. The extension made that very very obvious. The haters just refuse to believe how insignificant they are.
foppert2
Been over there scouting have you, Whiffa ?
All over the international signing talent to the point you can confidently label it the worst deal of the off-season ?
Great example of why fan opinions are irrelevant.
Big whiffa
I don’t have too. The league is all about power and speed. He can’t hit for power and doesn’t have any speed. So to have a 100+ WARc he’s going to have a carry an OBP of 400, possibly 420. Which is highly unlikely. Then they paid double the projected price for the guy. That makes him most likely bust candidate from the FA market
filihok
Bw
“The league is all about power and speed.”
No it’s not. It’s all about performance
“So to have a 100+ WARc he’s going to have a carry an OBP of 400, possibly 420”
Gonna assume you mean wRC+ here. If so, show your work. If not, what is WARc?
foppert2
Ha ha. Sure.
stymeedone
I wouldn’t sign Snell for what Boras is asking, not even close. If he really thinks Snell is worth that, maybe he should give the team an opt out after year two. If he pitches well, I’m sure they will opt in, but if he returns to his norm, they can cut bait.
filihok
stymee
“If he really thinks Snell is worth that
You do realize what an agent’s job is, right?
Big whiffa
@ filihok,
Right ! My bad. WRC+ where the league average is a 100 and they use that on this site all the time…
My math- if u can’t steal bases or hit for power then u are left with your BA and OBP to carry your wRC+. So to be above league average then you must be well above league average when other tools are lacking. the only player I know that’s worth 18 mil a season that can fulfill that roll is Arraez from marlins. Choo would be a past version on a player like that and he had just a couple seasons of being worth that kind of money and 0 after he signed for that kind of money.
How’s that ?
filihok
BW
“My math
…
How’s that ?’
Decent in generalities
Lacking in specifics
Yes, less power needs to be compensated by higher OBP to produce a league average batting line
However this was your claim
““So to have a 100+ WARc he’s going to have a carry an OBP of 400, possibly 420””
You didn’t actually do any math, though. You just made up some numbers.
Big whiffa
I’d love to see how all that’s broke down now that u say that. I’ll see what I can find.
filihok
Bw
For starters, ZiPS projects him for 110ish OPS+ for the length of his contract with OBP’s in the .340’s.
blogs.fangraphs.com/giants-finally-make-a-free-age…
His wRC+ numbers should be higher since OPS undervalues OBP
So, no, he does not need a .400 OBP to be a league average hitter
filihok
Bw
Steven Kwan had a 100 wRC+ last year with a .340 OBP and .102 ISO
Nico Hoerner was at 102 with a.346 and .100
Jeff McNiel at 100 with .333 and .108.
Nowhere near .400
D-Nice
They have Harrison too. For what Yamamoto got, they should make a run at both Snell and Montgomery. Especially when they supposedly were in on Ohtani too, by some reports.
Salzilla
Yes, meant to put Harrison in there as well, but still the juries out on the kids. They need outside help and bad.
foppert2
They need to present their case so the jury can decide. Any fair minded jury watching last years debutants would conclude they get to continue presenting their case. They did well. Then there is this years debutants. Zaidi has told us what is happening. He has confidence in them. They are getting opportunities.
DroppedThirdStrike
I think any signings this year are with an eye on next year and beyond. There is no plan to compete this year, just position themselves for next years FA class and the following season. Zaidi can’t be fully judged until then.
User 4223176798
I would say the GMs of the other MLB teams are the jurors. Even using the “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard, the jurors are not buying Schmitt, Hjelle, Wisely, Villar, and the list goes on.
foppert2
Agreed on those guys. I was talking Pitching. Winn Beck and Harrison.
You have no idea what GMs of other teams think.
bag o ballz
You do know that you can pick out the worst players in any AAA team and say that they aren’t that good. Traditionally no team has an AAA roster where they are all big prospects and future all starts- in fact you will probably never hear about well over 70% of them in your lifetime
geg42
I’m curious why this site doesn’t take seriously the reporting that the Giants won’t sign players with domestic violence allegations.

misterb71
How do you want the site to react? Shame the team? Praise the team? When you say the site “doesn’t take seriously” the reported position of the team but you don’t follow through the comment it leaves a lot of room for interpretation of what you intend.
geg42
They keep connecting the Giants to Clevinger. The Giants claim to take domestic violence more seriously than the league does. Either (a) that is not true and they would sign a player with DV history or (b) the writers aren’t looking at the scope of team policies or preferences
stymeedone
The allegations against Clevinger were dismissed by both the legal authorities and MLB, because they were unsubstantiated. Clevinger does not, therefore, have a DV history. Innocent until proven guilty is something everyone should take seriously.
melfman1
lol… that’s pretty ironic of them, considering their CEO (Larry Baer) was caught on video pulling his wife off her chair to the ground during a public argument. Apparently they are subscribers to the “do as I say”, not “do as I do” mentality.
geg42
I have commented on the past about this apparent duplicity. I didn’t want to muddy the waters any more with this info but I appreciate you bringing it up.
If Baer commits that level of offense in public , he should be banned from baseball ownership
TheBull
@melfman1 Yep, Current San Francisco Giants CEO/ President Larry Baer rouged up his wife on video,
She Was SCREAMING

Snell, Montgomery and Paxton are all Boras clients. Don’t expect them to sign soon. If I am the Cubs, I’ll want to know what the real offers are for these guys late, but they shouldn’t plan their season around getting one of them. A trade makes more sense.
Joe says...
I think Snell and Monty will be ok in the end. Paxton better take what he can get.
acoss13
Bellinger is a Boras client too so Hoyer is waiting him out as well.
Scott Kliesen
How exactly do you propose the Cubs “find out” what the real offers are for these guys? The players? Boras? Other GM’s?
That’s not how negotiations work. In case you haven’t heard, Boras is pretty good at the art of negotiating great deals for his clients. And I can assure you it isn’t by letting GM’s get a peek behind the curtain before closing a deal.
Jean Matrac
When there’s a bidding war for a player teams absolutely do know what the offers are. They won’t know what team offers what, but can usually be deduced. But an agent will tell a team that his client has an offer in hand for x years/$XX. Then the agent will invite that team to beat that deal. That continues back and forth with however many teams are involved until the agent secures the biggest offer. It comes down to the player to decide when there are equal top offers on the table.
bronyaur
As someone who teaches sports business and sports labor courses at the university level, and as a retired CEO, I have a pretty good idea of how negotiations work. Obviously far more than you do, Scott. You are quite naive if you don’t know that these deals are negotiated don’t occur in the context of long, ongoing relationships. They are not one-offs. Do you think that the GMs are just neophytes, just babes in the woods compared to Boras? Do you understand the career paths of the folks who end up decision makers on these deals? Do you comprehend the sophistication of owners in this arena? They Owners, especially those who bought in with billions they made in finance or real estate deals are almost without exception world class negotiators. Boras is not better at this than they are – he is good, but not that good.
Of course the parties are talking to each other, and strategically signaling. Do you actually think that Boras doesn’t shop around one last time with the big money teams once his clients’ markets come into sharp focus? Do you think that owners and GMs are fools who negotiate themselves on the regular? Do you think you know how to do this better than they do? Lord, what an ego you must have.
Both the Cubs and Boras right now know EXACTLY which of his clients might be a fit on the Cubs, and what the Cubs are likely to pay. Your assurance that Boras doesn’t let GMs know what is being offered is laughable – of course he does – he’ll BS of course, but GMs know how exactly the market for these players is progressing. What do you think they do all day this time of year? Sit around and read blogs about whatever business you are in, and pontificate ridiculously in the comment sections?
BlueSkies_LA
@ bronyaur. You are obviously not taking fully into account the Some Guy on the Internet factor. It is all-powerful and all-knowing!
JoeBrady
While what you said is likely true, it doesn’t invalidate what Scott said. From my interpretation, he said Boras doesn’t allow the other owners to peek behind the curtain.
What you said is that Boras will BS about it. It is really the same thing. BSing about something is NOT allowing the other owners a peek.
Wagner>Cobb
The Giants rotation is a total mess at the moment. Webb is really good, and Kyle Wright has nice potential. I do think Ray will do well there once healthy. Stripling has been good before, so maybe he can bounce back.
As a Cardinals fan, based on experience, I’m highly skeptical that Hicks will stick in the rotation. If they don’t want to spend at the top of the market then they need to pursue some of the value adds that can provide depth. Lorenzen, Clevinger, Carrasco, Ryu, or Paxton are all solid options, albeit with health question marks. Personally, I like Brad Keller for them. He’s shown flashes of potential, he’s relatively young (28), and perhaps the Giants could help him turn the corner that he’s been stuck behind the last few years.
NoTradeClause
Who is Kyle wright?
Wagner>Cobb
I meant Kyle Harrison
mab51357
Shoot. I thought the Giants had another nice pitching prospect. Should have known better. Lol. Just kidding with you WC
Jean Matrac
Zaidi said awhile ago that he he would look for TOR pitchers, but wasn’t interested in back end guys. I think that precludes guys like Lorenzen, Clevinger, Carrasco, Ryu, and Paxton. I don’t think he sees those guys as an upgrade over what’s in house.
He could still add someone like Snell or Montgomery. But baring that I think he’d rather go with Stripling and the young pitchers like Harrison, Winn, Beck and Whisenhunt. Even guys like Trevor McDonald, or Kai-Wei Teng could get a few starts until Cobb and Ray return.
Wagner>Cobb
it seems like he’s banking on Ray recovering and recapturing his occasional ace-form and on the upside of Hicks. Guys like Snell and Monty are outrageously overpriced. Healthy Ray and Cobb add a lot behind Webb. I don’t think Hicks sticks in the rotation though.
Jean Matrac
With Cobb and Ray joining the rotation later, they really don’t need Hicks to stick in the rotation. If he has 100 IP it will be a success.
I’d still like to see them add Snell or Montgomery, but as you say they’re over-priced, But it seems no one is willing to pay what they’re asking now so the prices should come down.
There’s a good article on Fangraphs about Hicks and the Giants planning to use him as a SP. It actually made me a little more encouraged.
stymeedone
Just for depth alone, Farhan will look at those pitchers. He has to have the innings to survive the season, and his reputation has him signing affordable starters, reviving their careers and then letting them walk if they are too expensive.
Jean Matrac
I could be wrong, but I don’t think he will. With all the pitching they have in the upper minors, why bring in anyone that’s a marginal upgrade at best? They’ll probably go with Webb, Harrison, Hicks, and Stripling and then cycle through Beck, Winn, Whisenhunt, Hjelle and Roupp to fill out the last slot, or replace poor performance. It’s time to see what they can provide.
User 4223176798
Giants have been irrelevant since they hired Farhan. Shopping at thrift stores is not how you build a champion. Look at the International Free Agents – they end up with #30? He believes in quantity over quality. Not only have they not upgraded their pitching, so far they have not upgraded their infield defense. How will that play with ground ball specialists?
mab51357
How many teams have had 107 wins in the past few years. Although that Giants team had just about everything go flawlessly that season. I agree with you on the middle infield help. Pitching. I guess we’ll see. I might be a little biased, but still think they should bring Crawford back on a team friendly contract. They could do worse and Crawford could help mentor Luciano, Schmitt and Estrada.
Jean Matrac
I don’t like the idea of bringing Crawford back. He was pretty bad in 2023. His wRC+ was 63, 37 points below league average. And although OAA liked his work giving him 6, DRS had him at -14. And from what I saw DRS seems to be closer to reality.
Estrada doesn’t need mentoring, and he can play SS if Luciano or Schmitt struggle. Plus Schmitt, showed he could handle the fielding part. His problem is with the bat, and Crawford isn’t going to help in that regard.
mab51357
All good points Jean. As I said. I’m a bit biased when it comes to Crawford. Watched him for his entire career. His glove was amazing and footwork was smooth as I’ve seen except maybe Vizquel and at times his bat was also above average. Until recently his bat was clutch in a lot of critical at bats. But the best thing about Crawford was and is his charity work. All around great. Forever Giant.
Jean Matrac
I couldn’t agree more. I love Crawford. He was a key to a couple of WS titles. It’s sad to have to move on, but I think it’s time, and I think he knows this.
oldgfan
Even though Zaidi has stated it, I’m not seeing the need for another Shortstop. Luciano out, try Schmitt.
He doesn’t hit again, try Fitzgerald. Wisely can play there too. I get they are unproven rooks but here’s how you find one that sticks.
Play the Kids !
Jean Matrac
oldgfan, That’s a reasonable approach I think. I would be fine with going with the rooks. I think Zaidi is just being conservative in looking for a SS. It’s a “just in case” thing. I doubt he’s going to trade much of value for a marginal piece.
Jean Matrac
Making huge offers to Ohtani and Yamamoto is akin to shopping in thrift stores?
foppert2
Cmon Jean. We all know those offers are just marketing spin designed to fool us kool aid drinking sheep.
oldgfan
Did someone say there was Kool-aid ?
I’m in. Really no baaaad flavors.
foppert2
Not anymore. I’ve drunk it all. Can’t you tell ?
biffpocoroba
Zaidi won’t be signing the Boras SP’s nor waiting upon Boras to pull the trigger because 1) Snell and Boras have priced themselves beyond what Zaidi would pay anyway, and 2) Montgomery purportedly prefers the northeast. So the sad truth is that barring a trade, the (mediocre at best) rotation you see now is the rotation they’ll have to start the season.
And yes, it does all go back to whatever Zaidi’s Plan B was. If he really didn’t think Imanaga was a mid rotation MLB starting pitcher, even at the very affordable contract the Cubs got him for, then your response is to sign a relief pitcher and hope he can magically convert into a starting pitcher and give you 5-6 innings every 5th day? Really?
Jean Matrac
biffpocoroba, I disagree with some of your points. First, neither the Giants nor Zaidi are cheap, as evidenced by the huge offers to Ohtani and Yamamoto. Snell and Montgomery haven’t signed with anyone, because their ask, so far, is too high for every MLB club. You’re right that the ask is beyond what Zaidi will pay, but it also is for everyone. We’ll see when their prices come down.
Apparently a lot of other teams besides the Giants thought the same as Zaidi about Imanaga. Otherwise the Cubs wouldn’t have been able to sign him for as cheaply as they did.
Hicks was #21 overall, and the 2nd highest RP on the top 50 FA list. It was Hicks’ requirement to be signed as a SP, not the Giants’ idea from out of LF. Any team that signed him was going to have to guarantee he would be given the chance to start. And, if Hicks fails as a SP, he’s moved to the bullpen.
stymeedone
See Lugo. See Lorenzen.
