The Angels are in agreement with reliever Matt Moore on a $9MM contract, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post (X link). Moore, a client of Apex Baseball, will sign with the Halos for a second straight offseason. He inked a one-year, $7.55MM deal with the Angels last winter.
The first run in Anaheim was a good one for the now 34-year-old Moore, who’s enjoying a nice second act of his career since moving to the bullpen. In 44 innings with the Angels during the 2023 season, the veteran southpaw notched an excellent 2.66 earned run average. Moore logged a strong 28% strikeout rate against a lower-than-average 6.9% walk rate.
The Halos wound up waiving Moore in August, but not due to his performance. Rather, the Angels made a last-ditch effort to get under the luxury tax threshold with a mass waiver purge just weeks after an aggressive, win-now trade deadline. Moore, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Hunter Renfroe, Randal Grichuk, Dominic Leone and Tyler Anderson all wound up on waivers in hopes that another club would take their contracts (not all were claimed).
Moore was quickly snapped up by the Guardians as they made their own last-minute push, claiming Giolito in addition to Moore. His stint with Cleveland only lasted 4 2/3 innings, as the Guards waived Moore themselves to save some cash after they, too, fell out of postseason contention. The Marlins scooped Moore up and enjoyed four shutout innings for him down the stretch.
Overall, Moore finished out a bizarre 2023 season with a 2.56 ERA, 27.5% strikeout rate and vastly improved 6.9% walk rate in 52 2/3 innings between the three teams. That marked Moore’s second consecutive year of productive pitching following a move to the bullpen. He turned in a 1.95 ERA for the Rangers in 2022 after signing a minor league deal. When combining the two seasons, Moore touts a 2.20 ERA with five saves, 36 holds, a 27.4% strikeout rate and 10.3% walk rate in 126 2/3 innings.
It’s a strong second act for the southpaw, who’d struggled as a starter for the few seasons preceding his bullpen move. It has clearly impressed Halos GM Perry Minasian and his staff, who have added him on a notable one-year pact in consecutive years. That’s in line with a broad willingness to attack the relief corps on free agency.
Los Angeles has signed five relievers this winter. Their first three acquisitions — Luis Garcia, Adam Kolarek and Adam Cimber — were fairly modest one-year deals. In recent days, they’ve been more aggressive. The Angels finalized a three-year, $33MM pact with Robert Stephenson this afternoon. Moore adds a lefty option to a relief group that otherwise figures to lean heavily on righties Carlos Estevez, Stephenson, Garcia, Ben Joyce and Jose Soriano.
The Angels are now up to roughly $172MM in payroll commitments for the upcoming season, as calculated by Roster Resource. That’s still well shy of last year’s $212MM Opening Day mark. Minasian and his staff very likely aren’t finished. They’ve been tied to various possibilities in both the lineup and the starting rotation. There’s still opportunity for the Angels to continue adding in the next few weeks.

Extremely underrated player and organization. “This is the true team of Los Angeles”.
Best fighter of all time is butterbean. F22 vs butterbean, boxing or street fight, butterbean wins everytime.
You sound stupid.
I agree completely
lol wut
“This is the true team of Los Angeles”. The quote refers to the Anaheim Angels.
List some baseball writers! Come on, do the thing.
“This is the true team of Los Angeles “
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EjcILt–p0U
This documentary covers exactly what you mention.
To paraphrase Bibi: ‘I will not engage with someone with Diarrhea in his name’
lol. “Ban count (all sites factored):25” was the name you chose then quickly changed.
But that made you sound so cool!
And having “Diarrhea” in your name illuminates your being disgusting, vulgar, and repulsive.
I thought diarrhea illuminated your mother’s chest?
Hahaha more of “but your mom!”. Just further flailing from an intellectual pissant.
You don’t deny the diarrhea-tittied mother. And you’re correct, I must be an intellectual pissant. I don’t declare stupid things underrated or list sports writers like Rainman.
Look on the bright side- you just interacted with the most significant person you will ever interact with in your entire life. Even though you were put in your little place, at least you got to interact with someone who actually matters.
If you do he will RUN,
And dehydrated
Anaheim is a separate city from LA
I get your sarcasm but they started being called the LA Angels in 1902.
On top of that, the Dodgers name translated is “The Angel’s Dodgers”.
Los Angeles = The Angels
So that name will always be linked to the AL team
So is Inglewood, CA, Irving,TX or how about the New Jersey Giants and so on.
Los Angeles RamChargers of Inglewood…
How many people outside of Southern California know where Anahiem is? I understand why Arte changed the name back to Los Angeles Angels. If I’m not mistaken, he did become a billionaire in advertising & billboards , just saying
Player – Yes… Organization – no!
Even “Moore” guys are off the FA market now!
Well Dinty Moore is still available
Their stew over some slightly buttered rice is seriously yum! Wouldn’t recommend for the sodium cautious and blood pressure minded folk, but every now and then it’s darn good stuff! It might be a once a year treat for me..
Have had Dinty Moore when I was too lazy to cook for just myself. Its not bad, but regardless of the different textures of the meat, potato, and carrot, they all taste the same. Must be because they were canned together.
Styme, yes indeed haha The whole thing tastes like beef gravy.
Nice!
How many guys have they signed for the bullpen now? 6?
5, but kolarek will stay in the minors they needed a whole new bullpen.
The Angels have been investing quite a bit in their bullpen this offseason for a team that is going nowhere fast any time soon. I guess if nothing else, Moore should be good trade bait for them at the deadline.
So is your take to *not* invest in a bullpen?
The off-season is still going. They sign a top FA SP and get big bat for RF or DH, they could make the playoffs. That coaching staff didn’t come here to rebuild.
What if they add Montgomery, Clevinger and Justin Turner or Adam Duvall– suddenly things are looking up with a surplus they can trade from. I believe they will sign one of either Snell, Montgomery or Bellinger. Then backfill the rest. if they sign Snell then they will look at two bats like Duvall and Turner and then trade from their outfield surplus for a second starter. That would change the whole dynamic of the team. Or if they sign Bellinger and Duvall then they sign a Clevinger or Ryu and trade for a second starter with their surplus.
CF, wooooOooo!!! You are talkin my language now!!! Let’s goooo Halo’s!!!!!!! If Arte gives Perry the green light for all that…WooooOoooo!!!! Trout must be demanding that things get done!!! WoooOoooOo!!!
P.S. I’ll take Tim Anderson as well!! He’s ready for another batting title!!
He hasn’t been good since he deservedly got knocked out at second base.
I think Anderson is a good fit. Is Neto going to play the whole year? How’s his back? Drury and Rengifo are not good defensive players.
They can mix and match DH, Third, First,
I’d much rather do that and spend a fortune on Bellinger. who doesn’t walk or hit the ball hard.
Montgomery will turn into Anderson. Clevinger has baggage, Arte will never go for it, but I wouldn’t mind.
The others are interesting.
But my choice would be Anderson. Does any of us really now the health of Neto, and neither Drury or Rengifo or adequate second baseman.
I wouldn’t want clevinger and plesac on the same team, they would find away to screw it up. Guardians split them up for a reason. Rengifo best position is 2nd, wouldn’t surprise me if they plan on drury taking some playing time for schanuel also dh. But yeah they need someone that can play shortstop.
Halo11Fan , I also like Anderson and think he and Rengifo will benefit the most defensively from Washington. Anderson said he is willing to play 2B and would just give Washington lots of, hopefully, really good options for the infield even with injuries. Anderson has been link to the Angels this offseason as well.
I really like this coaching staff and think this will have a BIG impact on this team. The new pitching coach already knew of problems has seen with a few starting pitchers. I also saw a rumor that he said Anderson was tipping his pitches.
fwiw, Drury’s OAA and OPS+ last year were +5 and 114, respectively. By comparison, Anderson’s were -2 and 60. Anderson doesn’t play defense well, doesn’t walk and has no pop. How are you suggesting the Angels utilize Anderson vs Drury and super sub Rengifo who had an OPS+ of 111 and played 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF and RF?
I agree that the best thing for Tim Anderson is some Ron Washington.
Angels & NL West- He just gives more options and I think he is a good bounce back candidate both with the glove and bat.
However we want to slice it, from Trea Turner, Pete Alonso, Mike Trout, and Tim Anderson, several (not all) of the WBC US players had subpar performances in the 2023 MLB season.
The US players, especially, were not prepared to go full-bore in March. That premature ramp-up definitely showed in the regular season. A guy like Mookie Betts prevailed, but if you look at that roster as a whole, there’s definitely a trend.
Tim Anderson has the perfect make-up to rebound. He has an athletic 6’1, 185lb body to last through his 30s. He has up the middle versatility and double digit SBs. He was on a sinking White Sox ship last year and is a perfect fit for the Angels. Drury is a FA next year and Anderson can slide right into 2B immediately. They need to get this done.
Just not sure if Anderson will be willing to take a bench role. I guess at some point he has to take whatever he gets.
Why do you feel they would be willing to exceed 3 years in a contract for a pitcher, now? They haven’t been willing in the past.
Styme, if I may jump in here…I firmly believe that Trout is demanding it..And yes, I think he has that much pull with Arte.
Stymie, I don’t really get this.
1) How many pitchers have been worth four years?
2) How many years did the Angels offer Cole.
3) How many years did he offer Greinke?
4) How many years did he offer Weaver?
5) How often would one starting pitcher would have made a difference?
When Arte doesn’t offer four years, he’s almost always right, when he does, other owners out spend him.
I think it’s an unfair criticism.
I remember hearing ohtani, and trout had say on the off-season moves last season. I’m not sure if he’s picking the players it’s probably more a handshake deal to be competitive.
Rexhudler86- If Anderson plays well enough he could get a lot of playing time. splitting time backing SS and 2B especially if Drury is needed elsewhere, injuries exedra. It won’t be a starting gig so that might be a problem. As you indicated it is less than 3 weeks till Catchers & pichers. The Dodgers are even less, like 2 weeks 2 days.
4get Anderson, he’s done. If u could teach em a lil OF, he would make 4interesting super-sub ala Tony Phillips except his defense in inf suks now. N his bat fell of a cliff. Rather see young kid get opportunity or sum hungry AAAA guy.
lol.
HBan22 – So for guys like you who like to come on sites and bag on the Angels, what exactly do they have to do for you to believe they are “going somewhere”? There has to be a tipping point in your mind. Otherwise you’re just a troll.
Please, sir, may I have some Moore?
Thank you, benhen77! I’ve been patiently waiting for a Charles Dickens reference on this site for years.
Ahhh Bart, I’m sure it was the best of times, it was the worst of times…
The way things often spiral on this site, we should soon expect Charles Dickens trolling.
Did you say MOORE!!!!!????
Can’t believe he’s even the same guy that lost like 15 games as a starter for the Giants awhile back.
Giants fan I assume. My memory of Matt Moore is probably a painful one for you. 2016 NLDS, 8 innings of fantastic pitching down the drain because the bullpen imploded.
You didn’t see him stink for the 2021 Phillies only to suddenly become great the year after.
Welcome back I guess
I was hoping they’d resign Moore. He was one of the few bright spots in the Angels pen last season.
I thought moore wasn’t returning their calls, glad he came back
For $9 million, he will answer that call.
figured he would be around 2/20 definitely not complaining.
Best signing they have made this offseason
Pretty solid deal.
If you have a questionable starting rotation the build up the bullpen. Moore is a good signing since they didn’t have a late innings lefty.
Yeah I wanted moore or Chapman for the lefty option surprised he signed for 9 when Chapman got 10.5
You are exactly right Trout, but today, no rotation averages much more than six innings. I love these last two signings.
As always Halo, I look to see your responses to bullpen moves. Needless to say, these last two signings greatly improve the pen. If you could pick just ONE more addition to solidify our BP, who would it be??
I was thinking Jesse Chavez did pretty good out the pen last year…
Probably Nerris.
Angels SP were league average last season. 4.47 ERA and 4.52 FIP. The RP on the other hand had a 4.88 ERA and 4.83 FIP.
Yes, the staff will be missing Ohtani. I still think that with regression towards the mean for Anderson, a solid season from Detmers, and more time with Silseth and Bachman in the majors that the staff will be strong.
ZZZzzzzZzzZzZz
Perry woke up
This is a good signing. Bellinger on a 1 year deal for $27M would make it better though.
Bring on Belli and Snell and I’ll start to get fired up!!!
Exactly…that would round things out nicely.
Bellinger doesn’t walk and doesn’t hit the ball hard. And his year last year was good, but not that good. He’d be a terrible signing.
And I don’t think you guys would like watching Snell pitch.
Just to add on Snell. He went more than six innings three times and is usually at 100 pitches in the sixth. He’s not fun to watch pitch.
Welcome to starting pitching in the second decade of the 21st Century. It’s the stat nerds, as much as the pitchers. Snell and this bullpen could be very effective.
Halo11Fan- Snell DID go 6 a lot and that is something. He IS similar to Sandoval in someways. He is not perfect but he is the one I would pick if I could pick one guy. If you could add him and Anderson I think that would be enough to make the playoffs. They have lots of rotation depth including. Daniel, Plesac, Suarez, Bachman, and Silseth and will go to a 5 man. They would have lots of talented infield depth. There is less depth in the OF , but a number of the infielders also can play the OF. DH will provide rest and a chance to infuse playing time if they don’t have so many injuries.
Tim, this isn’t about effectiveness, he’s just not fun to watch.
I don’t think Angel fans realize how frustrating he can be.
Full pack, six pack or pint, whatever your pleasure. You’ll need it.
Probably just Bellinger. Snell wants 6+ years and Angels fans know that Arte has not signed a starter to a deal longer than 3 years since 2011.
True true…So how about Ryu and Clev?
That is the type of short term contract that Arte would approve. It would improve the depth. The Angels really just need one starter since they are going with a 5 man rotation.
What about bauer?
Unfair, really. Now with the Astros lockdown pen, and the Angels scary Mega-Pen …my Mariners will be lucky to scratch into Fourth Place in AL West. Screw this, I’m going home.
ISOB, Pep up my friend! The Halo’s are certainly nothing to fear lol I promise you!
Hey, you forgot my A’s pen, led by Trevor Gott, Mason Miller and about half of the September 2023 waiver wire.
5th Place for Mariners then. Season over before it even began. Back to my NFL Mock Drafts sigh…
I didn’t think you guys existed, A’s fans I mean. Hey! And I’m sorry.
Bring back Urshela
You mean bring back Fletch, right?
Just say no to Fletcher.
I love Fletch!! Haha I have always believed in that guy! Can’t stop now! He was the closest we were ever gonna get to Eckstein 2.0!
Urshela would check the boxes a third baseman when the inevitable happens can be the emergency ss. They might want to limit schanuel playing time as well
Garcia, Joyce, Soriano, Moore, Stephenson and Estevez are a great core to build around. Well done, Perry.
You’re right, this A’s fan was hoping that maybe just maybe we could not be last in the AL West. Minisian’s apparent intention to spend to improve the Halos pretty much shuts the door on that.
That being said one can always hope – good luck this season
How long will it take for Estevez to lose the closing job to Stephenson? I think they’ll keep Estevez on a short leash and if he’s shaky early on, then they won’t hesitate to relieve him of closing duties.
Ideally they won’t have to ride him as hard this year so he’s not gassed by august.
Jeff is correct.
If Estevez needs a rest, Stephenson can easily step in and close.
Last year, guys like Jimmy Herget were forced to step up in that situation. Big difference.
Not sure I understand what Moreno is doing here. But then I can honestly say I never really did. Sorry Trumbo.
UncleMike, Nobody ever knows what Arte is doing. He’s out of his gourd haha. All I care about this year is Trout and Rendon staying healthy and maybe developing some of the younger guys so they can come back and help the team next year. 2 more years and they will make a run if all goes well! Halo’s 2026/2027!!
I mean he had Trout and Ohtani for 5 years and never bothered to finish the job and put a team around them. Now he’s picking up every pitcher he can find when that’s what he should of been doing 5 years ago. Like Babarino used to say” I’m soooo Confuuuuused! But not any Moore ( see what I did?) confused by what the Cubs aren’t doing.
Hey up your nose with a rubb…..wait nvm…lol Yeah UM, that is why my expectations are really tapered…I really just wanna see a dang full season of Trout and Rendon and see where the dust settles at the end of the season. In no way shapr or form am I expecting them to reach the playoffs. I just want them to get healthier, and better. And maybe Griffin Canning can finally have a breakout year.
There’s a pathway to the playoffs if they spend their remaining budget well. Add health to your list too, which derailed their 2023
Don’t give me false hope, AL!!!!!
Haha never!
And 2022
Interesting that Moore got less than Aroldis. Is Aroldis really better or is it a name-recognition thing? Honest question.
Chicks dig the fastball. Teams love high k rate and dream on what if we can cut his walk rate. Name recognition has some value.
I sense another 5+ ERA coming
YEEEEESSSSSS!! One of the best times to be proven wrong!
Angels still need another hitter and top of rotation pitcher. They could surprise a lot of people this year. It’s a lot of what ifs, but the talent is there!
It’s been there for years. It would make the West interesting if so!
Congrats LAA…you finally made a decent signing with little risk.
I like it. I like it a lot. 2 great lefties off the board. 26 teams fans should be asking why didn’t we sign these guys.
The Angels wanted Moore of the same…
Solid signing. More please
They just signed Moore
Bullpen is starting to look really good.
Haven’t the Angels learned their lesson with relievers named Moore? I know his stats are good and all but he strikes me as the kind if guy that could take it or leave it when it comes to getting to the playoffs again. Like whatever.
RIP Donnie
Jed Hoyer still has his cell on vibrate, apparently.
Along with Stephenson, Soriano, Estevez, Joyce, the back end is stacking up pretty nicely.
It would be nice to have another starting pitcher, but only Montgomery and Snell strike me as significant and reliable. And expensive.
After that, FA starters that are good but have question marks include Clevinger, Lorenzen, Ryu.
Guys returning from injury but with previous success include Turnbull and Velasquez.
It may just be that Detmers, Canning, Sandoval, Silseth, and Anderson/Suarez are the best options available.
How is the status quo the best option? Clevinger and Ryu are significant upgrades and affordable on short term deals. Snell and Montgomery are huge upgrades and Snell is a better pitcher than Ohtani. Our ERA last year was at the bottom. This pen will help.
How is Ryu a significant upgrade? He has only made 18 starts in the last 2 seasons. He made $20 million last season. How is he affordable?
I don’t mind signing him, because it would be a one year deal, but not sure that he is anything more than a bandaid at the backend of the rotation.
Who do we have currently that’s better than Ryu? Sandoval has only 17 wins in 5-years? Detmers won a whopping 4-games. CAnning and his nearly 4..50ERA? Silseth? Anderson? Who? Of course it’s an upgrade and Ryu isn’t getting $20M– probably $12-15M. If he’s healthy it’s a huge upgrade.
People forget that Detmers, Sandoval, Canning, and Silseth ALL finished with ERA+ above league average. Suarez did the two previous seasons. Anderson also is just one season removed from a solid campaign.
Look, they’re not great, but they’re not awful.
I agree that Snell and Montgomery would be significant upgrades, but they will also be very expensive and need long term deals. Are they worth it? Sure? Maybe? It kinda depends on the price. But, yeah, either would help a lot!
Ryu and Clevinger are definitely good pitchers, but they have major injury concerns. Neither is the sure thing you’re making them out to be..They aren’t an upgrade if they can’t be on the mound for 25 starts.
Lorenzen is a good dude, but probably not an upgrade over what is already on hand on the Angels roster.
So the upside of the Angels young pitchers may still be better than the question marks of Ryu, Clevinger, or Lorenzen. That’s all I’m saying. It’s fine if you disagree.
No way we are through. Clevinger and Ryu at the least! And Belli or JD! Need another bat. 2 more really.
I wouldn’t mind jd he would soften the blow of losing ohtani. It would give them a chance of sneaking into the playoffs.
Did Matt Moore not have any other suitors?
He sure was tough to watch as a Giant.
Moore was also released by the Marlins as the season ended, as he was not eligible for postseason action. These three times on waivers in 2023 were not due to performance.
Nice. Bullpen is now solid.
Minasian, go sign Bellinger.
And Snell…Or Clevinger and Ryu both!
Check the “Luis Garcia” Baseball Reference Link.
This still don’t put them higher than the #9-12 tier in the AL. Next year they will be 9-12. The year after that, and after that.
Jack, yeah, you’re probably right.. But it’s the year after THAT, that I am counting on!
Gonna be that year too. Then again they should trade Trout. Take the haul and rebuild their team.
I am all for Trout demanding to be traded to the Dodgers.
He would want to go to Philly. Philly has the young pitching prospects the Angels desperately need. The fans in Philly would scream for joy if it was brought up. The haul would be the biggest probably in history.
Jack, he would want to stay nice and comfy with his Wife & little Son in his mansion in Newport Beach, and go reunite with his old pal Shohei and his boy Mookie!
I’m sure he could find a nice mansion back home and play with Trea and Bryce.
Jack, but why though? He is already established here in SoCal..? For what reason would he want to go to Philly vs the Dodgers? Trea and Bryce are cool…But Shohei, and Mookie, and Freddie, and Yoshi, and Will Smith are cooler. Kershaw and Muncy too. Heck, it’s no contest..
I don’t know about Trout wanting to go to the Philly’s when the Dodger’s currently offer the best retirement plans in baseball….
Well he is a Philly guy. The Phillies have great players too.
Jack, there’s no haul. Trout’s contract has negative value, a lot of it. It would be tough to give him away.
A Trout trade would not bring the significant prospects some think. Even if Arte ate much of the future dollars.
Huge contract. Health concerns.
If he’s healthy enough to provide value, the Angels might actually win some games, so they might as well keep him at this point.
There are teams that would take it. The angels will never contend the way they are spinning their wheels. Come trade deadline. Trout is healthy and crushing it some team will overpay.
Trumbo! LOVE the new pic! Mmmmmmmm
The Angels are one of those teams that just pisses me off. They could have rebuilt their poor farm system at the deadline and this winter. Taken that step back to take the two steps forward. Instead they go back to trading water.
Have you met Arte Moreno? This is business as usual..
On one level, I understand Arte’s aversion to longterm contracts for pitchers. Yet, his bargain-basement approach to pitching clearly has not worked. He needs his own George Costanza moment, when he decides to do the exact opposite of what his instincts tell him.
Atta boy, Matty! Good for him.
They are dropping like flies, those bullpen guys.
It’s like someone opened the bullpen door and they all ran out at once.
I hope Matt has a 27% strikeout rate this year
As George Harrison would say, “Still my GM gently sleeps”.
great move by the Angels – they can release him at the deadline again when they’re out of it (instead of trading him for prospects) LOL
was hoping Anaheim would land Hopkins… they desperately need a lineup infusion.
I’m just glad to see a guy WANT to come back, especially after cutting him loose like they did last year.
Underrated move. Guy’s gonna win the AL Cy Young this year as a relief pitcher. Move over, Cole, you’re just not that good.
How much will the Angels end up spending to finish in fourth place this year?
Currently moved into third place, and they really haven’t spent that much Stephenson is the only guy that was signed longer than a year
Did they move Texas, Houston, or Seattle out of the division?
Can you read, and if they did it would make them first over the a’s. I was clearly saying they did enough to pass Seattle. I stand behind it
So they lose a two time mvp, add a few bullpen guys and make up that 15 game deficit. Talk about a delusion.
I didn’t say win a World Series, I said third place. They also added 5 bullpen guys, and got a new coaching staff, if the whole starting lineup doesn’t get hurt like last year it’s definitely possible.
Hey Jack, you don’t think Seattle and Texas have warts?
You really think Texas pitching is so great?
What about Seattle’s hitting?
Some people’s baseball knowledge doesn’t go beyond looking at the standings. These two teams are not exactly juggernauts.
Oh I know they have warts. There isn’t a perfect team. Still Seattle has pitching, and Texas has offense and Bochy. What exactly does Anahein have? An oft injured aging super star and umm what? You tell me how they gonna get 70 wins out of it let alone 90. They have a few good players but mostly AAAA depth. The farm system is trash. The starters are all middle/back end guys. I would put them 3rd tier with Boston, Cleveland, and Detroit.
I’m just saying it’s not far fetched. I think fourth the right prediction, but I wold bet even money the Angels don’t finish fourth.
I think there is more talent than you think. But why would go on a thread about another team and rip that team?
I’m not really ripping them. It’s more of a baseball fans frustration that they wasted generational players. You know I see them on the cusp of being really bad. It’s a real shame.
They have been one of busiest teams in the off-season without spending a billion dollars, they have the best bullpen they’ve had in ten years probably longer, and a better coaching staff. Most of the problems last year was coaching and the blowpen. I agree with the depth in the minors being thin, because most them have made it to mlb talking about Perry’s picks not eppler’s. They need to see what they have with the rotation Sandoval had a sub 3 era a couple years ago. Enright was already gotten rid of the pitching script they were following last year, pointed out Anderson tipping his pitches, and found a flaw in detmers delivery. Disclaimer I’m a angels fan, and the 2002 angels definitely had flaws, and they won so saying third place isn’t far fetched
The best pen in the last ten years is a very low bar.
But Soriano, Moore, and Stephenson do enough things well that it should be a solid pen.
Other the Joyce’s the rest have a mediocre at best track records so I think the Angels BP still has a ways to go.
Reading between the lines it looks like the club is going to go with a 5 man rotation and hope to shorten games with a stronger bullpen.
I’d still like to add a starter and a bat. Put Clevinger and Justin Turner on the roster and it looks a lot better.
Another dude that’s be8ng slept on. Moore totally redefined his career as a reliever, good for him. Guess he likes Anaheim lol.
I am encouraged by the signings of the BP arms. I hope they add additional SP (or 2) and more depth to the lineup. Hopefully none of them are long term, a la Bellinger to a 10 yr, that could possibly strap the Angels in the same manner Puljos did.
The Angels have a solid core of young talent. I am hopeful that a few of them develop into All Star caliber (Salmon and Anderson type), and the others are solid pieces (Kennedy and Molina type), then you have the opportunity to be playoff contenders year in and year out.
Minassian seems to be doing a great job with adding possible AAA depth with Calhoun, Dozier, Cimber, Sano, Martin, Wallach and Mejia, a couple of them may end up down in SLC.
Sonorawind, I think you missed the point regarding 100 pitches in six innings. He doesn’t attack and doesn’t have quick AB.
It’s not just the six innings. It’s the number of pitches.
I don’t think fans are going to enjoy watching him. His BB% is well above league average.
Angels should go full super bullpen. Add Neris and maybe Ottavino and they can cut the Starters to 4-5 innings.
Hippo, what do you mean cut their innings to 4-5 innings per game. That’s basically what Angel starters have been doing over the last few years which is part of the reason why the bullpen gets thrashed year in and year out…. Over use.
Cut the expectations and plan for 4-5ip, instead of hoping and praying they get 4-5ip. If they get more great, if not they should be ready with a stacked bullpen.
Let’s Go! We got our 2 guys in the Pen that were on the top of Angels fans list. Forget about Hader, you’ve got Moore and Stephenson for the price as one and A LOT less guaranteed money. Well done!
Now let’s get that ace.
I’m thrilled we got Stephenson. I’m happy we got Moore.
I don’t think Estevez is any good, I’d like Soriano, Moore and Stephenson used in high leverage situations. Maybe another pitcher or two might step up, and I’d like to add one more,
But the pen, unlike it years past, has talent.
I know you don’t like estevez, and garcia. if they bomb like you suspect still puts the pen in a good spot. Worst case scenario they will be 7th inning guy’s, still don’t think estevez was that bad. last year herget was talked about being the closer, and he might not even make the team at this point.
If a pitcher doesn’t throw strikes, allows hard contact and can’t keep the ball on the ground, any success he might have is a mirage. You can do it in a small sample size, but success is not sustainable. That’s why these types of RPs are volatile. That’s Estevez. Depending on him is foolish. He beats himself. He’ll have lucky stretches and unlucky stretches.
Garcia is different. He throws strikes, keeps the ball on the ground, he doesn’t miss bats, and he doesn’t avoid hard contact. He’s just there. Based on balls finding holes, aka luck, he’ll be inconsistent. Good stretches, bad stretches.
Neither are good for different reasons. You can’t depend on either one of them. They are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.
This M*M guy for some reason never learned to throw the Roger Beshens Football SLider the correct way. Bad Grip, Tilt or wrist action.
Jeffrey Springs finally got it working after many years but he hurt himself with a bad routine or bad grip, tilt or wrist action.
Too many watered down Roger Beshens football sliders, they need to reach out to him for that GTWA.
It’s a very low bar, last year it was only moore, and estevez( until the last couple months) that were any good. You got potentially 5 decent guys might be a couple surprises and a couple disappointments. I did see that high velocity guys are less volatile when it comes to advanced stats, and that’s the type perry has been targeting mostly this year
About Estevez, fly ball pitcher, hard contact, lack of control. With those peripherals it’s virtually impossible to have sustained success.
I really only see Joyce as a possible plus guy. But that doesn’t mean the other guys will stink, and it doesn’t mean they won’t have a few days of sustained success.
“…after they, too, fell out of postseason contention???” Come on, Adams. You are terrible at this. There should NEVER be commas around “too” in that situation. Straight up wrong.
I’m begging MLBTR to can this loser.
