The Angels have officially announced their previously-reported deal with right-hander Robert Stephenson. First baseman/outfielder Alfonso Rivas has been designated for assignment in a corresponding move, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Rivas, 27, has never appeared in a game as an Angel, having just been claimed off waivers a month ago. Over the past three years, he has been given 459 plate appearances in the majors between the Cubs, Padres and Pirates. He struck out in 30.3% of those and produced a batting line of .243/.324/.349, leading to a wRC+ of 90.
The production at Triple-A has been far more impressive. In 499 trips to the plate at that level over the past three years, he’s hit 14 home runs and paired a 15.6% walk rate with a 21.1% strikeout rate. His combined slash line of .307/.423/.483 translates to a wRC+ of 137. Defensively, he’s been mostly at first base but has also seen some time in the outfield corners.
Since the season ended, he’s been on the waiver carousel. He was claimed off waivers by the Guardians and then the Angels and may end up changing teams yet again. The Halos will now have one week to trade him or pass him through waivers. Despite the tepid major league production, the work in the minors is likely strong enough for him to get a shot with another club. He still has one option remaining and won’t even need to be guaranteed an active roster spot by a club that acquires him.

Bucs should claim him back
TheMan 3
If they truly want to be competitive this season bringing him back won’t help
User 4095290658
He’d be good depth at AAA considering the Bucs don’t really have a true 1B on the roster.
TheMan 3
My concern is with an injury to say, Connor Joe, they bring him up to the majors
Rivas is s first baseman but is a defensive liability and can’t hit his weight
I would rather bring back Santana for depth
Chuck from Uniontown
Want him for org depth, not on the ML roster. If he gets claimed again, easy come easy go.

What’s the record for being DFA’d? Rivas has to be close. He’s like the Ultimate 41st man. They should do this guy a favor and add a guy to every team and make it a 41 man.
YourDreamGM
What 2 players do you drop to add him? I wouldn’t want to keep him on 40 man either so he might get claimed by another team.
Birdieman2
You gotta be pretty bad to be DFA’d off that roster.
YourDreamGM
Guys get dfa off every team. Rivas types you don’t want on your 40 man. You just try to pass through waivers.

When i said Rendon was toxic or other fans go against Sam Blum and defend Rendon, Anyone notice the recent Papelbon comment that Rendon hates baseball? You may try to discredit the messengers but it’s rare for any player ex or current to question the heart of another. in any pro sport. I would tend to believe Papelbon.
Rexhudler86
It’s really not a new thing, unfortunately they are stuck with him. I believe papelbon as well. He has been quoted saying he doesn’t like baseball just happens to be good at it. Reports also were saying that ohtani didn’t like him. He did shake his head when he grabbed the fan, and walk by him.
YourDreamGM
I thought Rendon said that himself when he was in Washington. Didn’t say hate but you could read between the lines. Wasn’t surprised at the contract LA gave him though.

Quoted saying same difference

Anaheim is arguably the most overrated stadium in all of baseball. It is NOT the best stadium in all of baseball.

Who said it was?

I’ve never seen anyone claim, sarcastically or otherwise that “the big ‘A’” is the best stadium in baseball. Not even the best in Cali with SF and SD. It’s better than the Coliseum in Oakland.

Nobody ever rated it as a good stadium. I’ve been to many games there. I remember going to Rams games there when it was fully enclosed. That was before Disney bought it and knocked down a ton of seats and put up the rock formation.
Last time I went I sat along the third base line and the seats face straight. I was looking at the right fielder and had to turn to watch the plate. Good for football, not so much for baseball. I have sat near the left field foul pole during a day game and it made me question life as I melted into the seat.
But I do love sitting in right field during night games. It is fun and a great view. Parking is great. The lot is massive and they direct the traffic well so you can get in and out quickly. Plus the coaster station is right there (pretty much).
That said I would love a new stadium. Unfortunately when they do it a lot of that parking goes bye-bye. Also that pesky corruption stuff is kind of getting in the way.

20 years ago SI and others rated the Angels as a great fan experience due to the combination of the family friendly atmosphere, winning team, reasonable tickets, and decent ballpark.
As far as pure ballpark rankings I’ve never seen it rated all that highly. It is a decent place to watch a game but it is aging and needs to be replaced.

Moreno has turned off the Hot Stove, well it was never hot, only lukewarm. but it is off now.
Chuck from Uniontown
Moreno has moved the gas lines. Convection cook top is what you get.
HalosHeavenJJ
I wouldn’t mind keeping him. That’s a nice AAA slash line.

I liked Rivas with the Pirates but he lacks power which is important to have for a first baseman. He was a slick fielder and decent hitter but not good enough for first base.He is the type of player that needs to be able to play the corner outfield spots so that he has flexibility position wise as he is not a strong enough hitter for just that one position.
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
He’s always seemed to me like a dude who just needs consistent at bats to find his footing. His AAA numbers are excellent. If I’m Preller, I’d look at bringing him back.
