This summer’s trade deadline will be on July 30 at 5pm Central, reports Joel Sherman of The New York Post. That’s a slight change from 2023, when it was on August 1.
Traditionally, the trade deadline had always been on July 31. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, the commissioner can choose a date between July 28 and August 3 for the deadline. This is mostly so that the league can avoid having the deadline occur when games are going on and players have to be removed in a “hug watch” scenario.
If the deadline were to fall on a weekend, when there are many afternoon games, the chances of a player being dealt during an ongoing game would be higher. The commissioner’s office seems to have decided that Tuesday evening is the best choice, as this is the third straight year that the deadline will fall at that part of the week.
Feels like a lot of the current free agents will not be signed by this deadline.
as soon as Ohtani decides where he’s going, the dominoes will fall
Good call. He’s not been given any money yet, right?
Is there still time for John Henry to open his purse?
Has hell frozen over yet?
Dewey, I think chaim took it with him when he left town
I notice they like it always being a Tuesday…. Hmmm
I think that’s bc they can make sure there are all night games. They prefer to avoid the dugout “hug watch” and players finding out mid-game.
Mondays are a travel day for some teams, and sometimes have day games. Wednesday is getaway day for a lot of teams and there are several day games. The best deadline days to avoid all of that would have to be a Tuesday or a Friday.
They honestly should let the player finish the game. It would avoid the hug watch and they can tell the players in the confront of the managers office they’ve been traded.
If that player gets hurt while staying in the game, it could cancel the trade. Not worth the risk. Sure, it’s unlikely, but it would happen at some point.
Good point didn’t think of that. Then at leaat if the player is in the middle of the at bat let him finish. Same with a pitcher. Let him get the current batter out. Last thing a pitcher needs to know that he was traded and it’s a 3-2 count on the verge of a milestone strikeout.
I think they typically let players get back to the dugout and then inform them.
The turning point was when Wilmer Flores was playing for the Mets, and while he was on the field, he was mistakenly told he was traded.. he was in tears while playing defense. Come to find out he didn’t get traded.
It wasn’t a good look for baseball.
That’s also because there’s no crying in baseball. It’s also the reason I call him Wilma Flowers. Haha
Considering his earnings, he’d probably let you call him anything you want.
Illuminati conspiracy confirmed
@texas what’s the looney-tunes conspiracy theory on this?
@smacky
Tues-day. Twos day. We all live and experience two Tuesdays every week. However, the illuminati wipes our memories of the Tuesday that doesn’t serve their needs. They do this every week as a buffer, keeping everything and everyone in step with their agenda. Now the MLB trade deadline is finally fully under their control. We all had our suspicions about Manfred, but now we know for certain he is their stooge. Its all so simple. Why can’t you see?
I’m already planning my trade deadline party. Just like the swallows returning to Capistrano each year, it’s a time honored highlight here in Pittsburgh
But Mary rejected Lloyd.
There was a one in a million chance though.
Unfortunately Mary Samsonite is married to Bobby Samsonite.
With the expanded playoffs, I think we’d have a more interesting deadline if it were about Aug 10. Too many teams with hope by July 30, and limits seeing the best players in October. A later deadline might particularly help bring in more casual fans.
I don’t think there should be a trade deadline. Why not allow trades up to the start of the playoffs? Imagine what a team might pay at the last minute if there’s an injury…
Without one, they’d be complete chaos. The eventual result would make the playoffs no reflection of the ups and downs of the regular season. In fact the regular season would become irrelevant.
Chaos is what I want.
The trade deadline is good. But they should bring back the non-waiver trade deadline back to August 31.
Pete Alonso, Jeff Mcneil, Quintana and Diaz should all be available from the Mets. Maybe Nimmo and Senga as well.
Whenever it is, you can bet the Reds will do little to nothing.
They did plenty during 2022 deadline. 😉
Do they pick dates from a hat?
That’s explained in the article
besides the start of Spring Training this is my second most exciting day of the season !!!
So, we have until then to make our choices on biggest player moved by July 30th Contest?!
I pick Manny Machado. <3
Not a bad guess!
The only way I see him being moved is if the padres pay a majority of his contract, or he bounces back, is the nl lead for MVP and having the best season of his career, and the padres still pay a good chunk of his salary
@ B_s_c — You’re right, he is still owed a LOT of money, but I’m dunno if there are opt-outs upcoming in the next 1-3 years which changes the perspective a bit.
Manny does post up, and put up. His diviation from year to year is pretty minimal.
Jays will be selling everyone in July when they are 5th in the East. Hopefully Vlad can bounce back so he has some value by July.
Not to worry, Dig, the Sox will own last place in the East. Agreed on Vlad, though. There’s a plate discipline issue with Vlad that has nothing to do with baseball.
Should be August 15th or August 30th. Injuries happen from July to end of September. That or MLB should expand rosters to 40 beginning August 1st.
When is payroll? July 31 or Aug 1? For the players who get traded it seems like some overtime will be generated by those in the payroll department with the addition and subtraction to those direct deposit amounts.
WILL ANY OF THE CURRENT UNSIGNED SCOTT BORAS CLIENTS BE SIGNED BY THIS DATE SO THEY CAN BE TRADED?
Get rid of the trade deadline. Let teams trade freely all year round.
Most underrated trade deadline possibly of all time.
Manfred ruins the “hug watch”.
We were due for a rule/policy change from Uncle Robbie…
I always thought it was fun, having players be traded midgame, give the fans a cap tip…..get an ovation from the fans….
Maybe Manfred is ruining the game because he’s jealous of the athletes?
Magic 8 Ball Sez:
The following players will be traded at the next Trade Deadline July 2024: Carlos Santana, Brad Hand, Andrew Chaffin, Jake Bauers, Jake Marisnick, and Austin Hedges.
Thank you Magic 8 Ball!!! You are so wise and omniscient!!!!
