The White Sox have designated catcher Carlos Perez for assignment, the team announced. The move creates roster space for Chris Flexen, whose one-year, $1.75MM deal with Chicago is now official.
Not to be confused with older brother Carlos Eduardo Perez (also a catcher and a veteran of five MLB seasons), Carlos Jesus Perez is a 27-year-old backstop who was an international signing for the White Sox back in 2014. Perez has hit .264/.314/.389 over 2402 career plate appearances in Chicago’s minor league system, and he has played in 34 games for the Sox at the Major League level over the last two seasons. Over his small sample size of 71 trips to the plate in the Show, Perez has hit .209/.254/.343 with one home run.
Catcher has been a target area for the Sox this winter, as Martin Maldonado and Max Stassi were both acquired to bolster the team’s depth behind the plate. With Korey Lee also on the roster, top prospect Edgar Quero perhaps in line for a big league debut in 2024, and Chuckie Robinson recently signed to a minor league deal, Perez is now the odd man out.
The White Sox could keep him in the organization as even more depth if he clears waivers and is outrighted off the 40-man roster, but with a number of catchers already on board, Chicago might opt to just release Perez entirely. Since teams are constantly looking for catching help, Perez might not have much trouble landing with another club on a minor league deal heading into Spring Training.

I like Carlos. He signed my Angels cap when he was with the Bees playing the Sounds in Nashville. Cron completely ignored me.
mistborn
That was his brother fyi
prov356
Ok, why are there two brothers named Carlos Perez who are catchers?
mistborn
Same reason there is a few rougned odors. They like the name apparently. Both seem like good people though. Always signing for kids
ruff kuntry
What parents give both of their kids the same first name?
venezolano1969
Their father is also named Carlos, so he named all his sons Carlos with a different second name. It’s quite common in latin countries. Same thing happens with Wilmer Flores (giants) and his brother (Tigers prospect)
venezolano1969
There are not varouis Rougned Odor. His uncle, a former minor leaguer who’s now a coach, is named Rouglas. (We Venezuelans have a thing fot funny names) the Basabe brothers is a funny case… not only they’re both named Luis, but they’re twins.

Ask George Foreman
avenger65
Ruff: George Foreman. All of his sons are named George. Not sure about his daughters, however.
ChiSox_Fan
George Foreman.
There maybe like 5 of them.
Curvesarebetter
George Foreman named all 8 of his kids George
Curvesarebetter
His daughters have names like Georgette and Georgina
profhambone2
George Foreman.
DeepDownSouth
His daughters are named Georgette, Georgiana IRDK

I think the Cubans with their use of so many y names are stranger than the Venezuelans with name. But I’m sure both countries find American names ridiculous.
cuffs2
His daughters all had names like Georgette.
NoNeckWilliams
Someone should tell his parents to give their children different names.
Bob Sacamano 310
I feel like it’s more common of Latin players have brothers with the same name. The Basabes, Carlos Lee had a brother named Carlos Lee who played in an organization.
ruff kuntry
And there’s the Victor Mesa brothers.
venezolano1969
It’s quite common here in Venezuela. The father gives their sons his name and a different second name to tell them apart. Hence the Perez brothers, the Basabe brothers and Wilmer Flores (giants) and his brother Wilmer (tigers prospect)

I’m still not happy seeing Edgar Quero gone.
We’ll see if I’m right but I think he’s a quality MLB regular
cwsOverhaul
Hope you are right. Maldonado can mentor Quero on the prep/study aspects of being a catcher so he can work on it this year in minors. They need to develop a legit well-rounded catcher.
kellin
You think he’s better than O’Hoppe, and if not you really want to let a quality backstop sit as backup on a team? As much as it’s a bummer to see him go, and for nothing, it’s probably better for him.
HalosHeavenJJ
It takes at least 2 catchers to get through a year. Quero is a couple of years behind O’Hoppe as well.
Yes, I’d rather have 2 studs than 1 as depth, especially behind the plate, gets really thin quickly.
Dumpster Divin Theo
O hoppe is kind of ironic don’t you think, white men can’t jump and all. Tho I did see Conan O Brien skip with glee once
Astrosfn1979
Of course they DFA’d him.
Apparently only former Astros can catch for them.
Banix12
Was a little surprised Perez never got a real extended chance with the MLB club. Especially considering the state of White Sox catching the last two years.
I think he was at least more deserving of an extended look at the end of last year than Korey Lee who looked utterly lost at the MLB level.
avenger65
Banix: Totally agree. The Sox haven’t had a decent C since Pierzynski. The last four years were particularly horrible with Grandal. Perez might be equal to Stassi, but he’s better than Lee and Maldonado. I’d say the last two can’t hit their weight, but that would be unfair to Maldonado.
FanOfTheUmpires
BELLI will be a white sock and Snell will also be a white sock, etc. so they’re making room for them. Extremely underrated organization, ownership, and stadium.
bmann300
I am a WS fan- I think you have the wrong Chicago team- though adding these 2 guys would be nice!
brushbackmlb
Yeah, that was surely sarcasm, but a fun “what if” idea to contemplate. If only being a real world GM was as easy as being one in video games!
FanOfTheUmpires
BELLI will definitely. Right across from where he played with the Cubs so he already loves the area and the stadium etc and they’re primed for deep playoff runs in the near future.
BrianStrowman9
Jesse Scholtens will be starting game 1 of the WS!
FanOfTheUmpires
Or Snell.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Snell schnell. More like Smell
Rolando Medina
No they will not.
They brought in Barfield and Bannister for a reason.
Big Hurt
There’s a very real possibility that Carlos Perez is better than any of the 27 catchers the Sox have signed/ traded for (Lee, Maldonado, Stassi, etc.). Ugh
And he’s definitely better than at least 6 of the terrible pitchers on the 40 man (Banks, Cousin, Peralta, Foster, Ramsey, Speas). Just brutal.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Or there’s a very real possibility you drama queen on New Years eve eve
Big Hurt
No need to be a d*ck Theo, just making a point, with a bit of exaggeration, granted.
minoso9
Hopefully one of the aforementioned catchers can step up and do a very good job behind the plate and with the bat. I won’t miss Grandal in any event.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Nah people liked Yaz – elite pitch framing, good handler of staff, +.800 OPS when healthy who saw a lot of pitches in ABS, considerable pop. He just could not stay healthy
avenger65
Theo: Grandal went up to the plate hoping to draw a walk. He would take hittable pitches hoping the ump would call it a ball. And the only players rightfully called Yaz are Carl and Mike.
Curvesarebetter
Yaz led the league in passed balls per games played, couldn’t throw base stealers out and as far as his pitch framing… the Wsox led the league in walks, so how good was his pitch framing? I know what I see and Yaz was HORRIBLE
whitesox2112
They need someone
Old York
Interesting data. Although limited PAs, in 2022, the guy was mashing off-speed and breaking balls but couldn’t catch up the fastballs. Then in 2023, he couldn’t hit the off-speed and breaking balls but was hitting fastballs.
Maybe over the winter and in the minors, he can focus on hitting all three offerings and he might have some more success.

Curvesarebetter
Perez has been in the minors since 2015. He should have figured out how to hit by now
jimrad
Angels signed Zach Plesac. Where you at Getz????
Probably "Rick hahn"
We hardly knew yee
