The free agent market for pitchers has been much more active than for position players so far this winter. Seven of MLBTR’s Top 50 Free Agents have signed new deals, and six have been pitchers: Aaron Nola, Sonny Gray, Kenta Maeda, Reynaldo López, Nick Martinez, and Luis Severino. Moreover, 11 different pitchers have already signed for $10MM or more; no position player has crossed the eight-figure threshold.
Still, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto unlikely to sign during the Winter Meetings, it’s possible the market for starting pitching could slow down, as suitors wait for Yamamoto to make his decision and other frontline starters (namely Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery) wait for Yamamoto to set the going rate. With that in mind, perhaps the various starting pitchers on the trade block will draw even more attention during the next four days.
Indeed, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the market for 2022 Cy Young runner-up Dylan Cease is “robust,” noting that the Dodgers, Braves, and Orioles – among other teams – are involved in trade talks with the White Sox. Further clubs that have been linked to Cease in recent days include the Mets and Cardinals.
Last week, Morosi reported that discussions around Cease had “intensified” and suggested a deal before the Winter Meetings was “increasingly possible.” However, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic threw cold water on that rumor, reporting that White Sox general manager Chris Getz would most likely wait to trade Cease until more of the top free agent starters were off the board. While no further frontline starters have signed in the last few days, Morosi’s report about the robust market for Cease at the Winter Meetings is enough to rekindle speculation about a potential trade in the coming days. After all, if the White Sox have their eye on any particular trade chips, they’d be smart to strike before those chips are spent on Tyler Glasnow or Shane Bieber instead.
Some more trade-related news from around baseball…
- Speaking of Glasnow, the Rays starter is generating a great deal of interest, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. While it shouldn’t come as any surprise that plenty of teams would love the right-hander in their rotation – he had a 3.53 ERA and 3.08 SIERA in 21 starts last season – it is noteworthy that he’s drawing so much interest so soon. His $25MM salary for the 2024 season is much more than Cease or Bieber will earn in arbitration, and there are plenty of free agent pitchers available who will only cost money, rather than money and prospects. Evidently, however, his talent is enough to outweigh his price tag.
- Speaking on a Zoom call with members of the media, Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos emphasized that the team is not planning to trade any of its young players signed to long-term extensions (as relayed by Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution). While Anthopoulos qualified his statement with the caveat of “special circumstances,” the executive stressed with “absolute, fierce confidence” that he is “extremely unlikely” to trade anyone from his cost-controlled young core. That group includes Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, Michael Harris II, Matt Olson, Sean Murphy, Spencer Strider, and 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr., all of whom are under team control through at least the 2027 season.
TradeAcuna
Why would they trade Acuna anyway? Albies, absolutely do that. In fact, it makes zero sense to trade anybody else on the list.
As for Cease, just do it already!
showfeet
Albies has the most club friendly contract in baseball at a super premium position. No way they move him.
saluelthpops
Is 2B a “super premium” position? No doubt Albies is a stud and his contract is a steal.
Paleobros
Don’t be a silly goose. Trading Albies is not a thing.

Of Glasnow, Cease, and Bieber, Glasnow is most desirable due to his stuff being better. Plus he will cost less in prospect capital to acquire than Cease because he only is controlled for one season.
Seems like a perfect fit for Dodgers. Baltimore, as a division rival, would have to overpay to get him.
mp2891
Exactly.
LAKERS RULE!
Dodgers neeed more of a sure thing than Glasnow. Is stuff being better is debatable but one thing is not is his durability. Cease is my preference
mp2891
I’ve debated Glasnow’s durability plenty, but I get why you’d want the extra year of control that comes with Cease.
richardc
Plus, Cease is roughly another 17m player cheaper.
Yes, he will cost more in terms of prospects, but if both have really competitive markets than either way you’re giving up a couple quality prospects.
I’d much rather get the guy with 2 years that’s more durable, and then with those savings acquire another player or two 8m players, especially if you need bullpen pieces.
Big whiffa
The pirates say Tampa wants the greatest return lol.
So what’s an offer the dodgers make to land any of these guys ? I can’t seem them trading away Bobby Miller since they need arms anyway and the rest of what they have to offer is suspect at best
Bob Sacamano 310
Has never tossed more than 120 innings (which happened this year), and is getting paid $25M. He shouldn’t command a lot.
Bob Sacamano 310
The guy with the most starts in the MLB over the last 3 seasons is available for likely $25M (arb depending) the next 2 years in Dylan Cease.
Big whiffa
True, but the white sox are incompetent and are well proven at having no clue how to run a franchise and Tampa is on the complete opposite end of that. So it’s more likely we will be impressed w the rays return while thinking the white sox could have gotten more
cwsOverhaul
Boras reps both Snell and Montgomery. Any team who knows they are not going to allow themselves to be squeezed for a massive guarantee and dragged out waiting on Yamamoto to sign first is well served to trade this week. Balt seems to fit that bill, but will they trade a meaningful player/prospect that hurts to avoid LAD or Atl grabbing the arms?
jvent
The Mets should sign Montgomery and Woodruff now before others do, then wait on Yamamoto, If he signs elsewhere than they’ll have to trade for either Cease, Burnes or Bieber. They should try to sign Hoskins to DH/backup 1b, if not him than Soler to DH.
If the Yankees don’t get Soto would they do Marinaccio for Marte ? The Yankees need OF’s and the Mets can use relievers !
Fernando P
Highly doubt it. Marte is owed 40M for next two years and Marinaccio makes less than 1M and is controlled through 2029. Marte is also RH and Yankees are looking for lefties.

I’d just like someone to ask Getz, how is this not a full rebuild when you keep dumping your best players? With Cease gone, Robert can’t be far behind. Making it even worse, the rest of the league knows how easy it is to scam Getz. Look at the return for Burger. He helped the Marlins get to the PO for a pitcher that can’t even hack it in AA. Bummer to the Braves for talent? No, for players who each have contracts under the Sox’ ceiling of $3m. It’s a FULL REBUILD!!!
cwsOverhaul
It is a rebuild of course since they only have Robert for CF and pricey Benintendi LF long-term as legit proven pros. Perhaps in their mind it’s not a total overhaul unless/until those guys are traded (besides Cease/Eloy likely this week). Pure semantics where marketing spin doesn’t really matter.
Getz is unqualified after presiding over terrible farm system/player development…..but the ire for Burger trade was Kenny W going over Hahn’s head. Typical Reinsdorf organizational dysfunction.
Aiden Awe
They haven’t even dumped their best players yet. They have no plans to repeat 2016 whatsoever. I truly don’t think this is a full rebuild.
steelerbravenation
Cease will be a Brave by the end of the day. Contract extended by the end of the week.
Atloriolesfan
The Braves have no prospect capital and Cease and Glasnow probably take them deeply into the payroll territory where draft choice penalties are really severe. I don’t see them as realistic players for anyone that’s traded for prospects.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Braves have plenty of prospect capital. And they aren’t prospect huggers like your Orioles. Braves use prospects for the most practical reasons, to help the ML team. Albies, Riley, Acuna, Harris, Strider, Minter, Fried (yes I know they traded for him but it was when he was a MiLer), etc. Hard to have high minors rankings when you consistently graduate players to the majors.
rondon
Yet it will take a high level prospect headliner to acquire either one. With so many teams interested, why would the Rays or White Sox settle for less?
mp2891
I’d love to see the Rays trade Glas for Murphy, Kuehler and Schwellenbach.
BrianStrowman9
The amount of top 100 prospects doesn’t really matter. If the Sox like AJSS and Waldrep & the Braves will give them up—it’s gonna be a deal.
You aren’t gonna get 3-4 top 100 guys. 2 top 100 arms for 2 years of Cease is a nice package. They have Grissom too.
BrianStrowman9
To a point. It depends how far the Braves are willing to go. They have enough talent to get Cease. The price is only going to go up so high. If the Braves are willing to put their top 2 arms on the table —few teams can match that.
I’m not suggesting it’s a good idea but few teams can match their top 2 young pitchers. The O’s sure as hell can’t. It’ll come down to what the Sox want. If it’s pitching—ATL is hard to top.
AA has been more willing to use his farm to acquire guys than almost anyone. I don’t think the Dodgers will give up more to avoid Cease going to ATL. I think they’ll just pivot to another arm. I just don’t see the ceiling going past what the Braves can offer:
braveshomer
Can someone explain the Mariners/Braves trade to me?….Seems like we just took on a bunch of salary and didn’t get back anyone who helps us get better? Kelenic may still have potential I get that, but seems odd
blotti
Marco can be a decent arm, 5 decent season in a row before last year
Braves need back end of rotation help and have a good track record with pitchers coming over
ponytail01
Pitching is going to cost you millions or several top prospects.
Jesse Chavez enthusiast
Probably not a popular opinion but I think the Braves would be better off trading for Shane Bieber than Cease. It would probably cost less in terms of prospects to acquire him given this is his walk year. Bieber has stated that he is open an extension with the team that acquires him as well. Trading for a guy and extending them has definitely been the MO For Alex Anthopoulos in recent seasons. Dylan Cease would probably be way harder to extend given his representation. Bieber doesn’t have the elite stuff he use to have but I can still see him being a #2 or 3 starter for a few more years.
mp2891
It shouldn’t be an unpopular decision though. Bieber costs less in cash and trade cost, and he’s the worst of him, Cease and Glasnow. You get what you pay for, and if the Braves don’t need/want a top arm, then Bieber might be the way to go.
mp2891
That’s the beauty of the free market. If a team would rather spend cash and hoard their talent (e.g., Mets), then Glasnow is probably the way to go. If a team would prefer to trade players and save cash, then Cease is the way to go.
Ra
There are tons of restrictions in baseball. Consider how many years of team control of players. Hell, MLB can void trades! Not what we would call “free market.”
