With the Winter Meetings underway in Nashville, Tennessee, here are three things to keep an eye on around baseball today:
1. The Winter Meetings get rolling
Outside of one major trade on Sunday night – the Braves acquired Jarred Kelenic from the Mariners – the lead-in to MLB’s Winter Meetings was relatively quiet. That was to be expected, however. The first day is often the slowest, as executives and agents are just arriving and getting ready for the busy week ahead.
Now, with the calendar flipped to Monday, perhaps the hot stove will really start to sizzle. Forty-three of MLBTR’s Top 50 Free Agents are still unsigned, and none of Anthony Franco’s Top 25 Offseason Trade Candidates have yet been dealt. It’s hard to believe that will remain the case for long.
2. Brewers to officially announce Jackson Chourio’s contract extension
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Brewers will host a press conference today during the Winter Meetings to officially announce Jackson Chourio’s record-smashing contract extension.
The 19-year-old top prospect will make a minimum of $82MM over the next eight years and can earn as much as $142.5MM over ten if the Brewers exercise both of their team options and Chourio maxes out all his incentives. It is far and away the largest contract ever signed by a player before making his MLB debut.
Presumably, the Brewers plan to put Chourio on the 2024 Opening Day roster, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him starting in center the next time they take the field. The big question now is if the Brewers will keep spending to put together a more competitive team around their young phenom.
3. Will Wade Miley be the next free agent to sign?
In more Brewers news, the team is reportedly close to re-signing veteran starter Wade Miley. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to surmise that a deal was on the horizon, while Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported on Sunday evening that the two sides were “moving closer” to an agreement.
No figures have yet been reported, but it’s worth mentioning that Miley rejected his side of a $10MM mutual option with Milwaukee earlier this offseason, instead collecting a $1MM buyout. Presumably, the new contract they are discussing will guarantee him a bigger payday than the one he turned down.

Cease!

Cease with all the Cease articles. I completely agree.

Cease and desist letter from ex hairdresser’s lawyer not something you want to receive whilst celebrating your birthday at a baseball game.

I wish everyone would Cease with all the lame Cease jokes.

Marlins needs are pretty simple this offseason.
– RH relief pitchers to compliment surplus of LH relievers. They seem to be grabbing pieces to compete. They need to continue that. As a side with this, I’m curious about where Anthony Bender is in his recuperation.
– Catcher needed to upgrade us from Stallings. Not sure where the Marlins are going to do that, or what their thoughts are on it. It’s not a hard situation to address because the bar to improve from Stallings is really low to the point that most available pieces are an upgrade.
– SS or CF is needed to upgrade from what Wendle did. Probably looking at Tim Anderson or Amed Rosario or a trade target. If the Marlins prefer to move Jazz to SS, then CF is the goal. The Marlins will need to spend a little payroll for whatever they determine will be the piece to bring in.
– High Leverage Reliever/Closer. This has been one of the top needs for the Marlins ever since 2020. It still hasn’t been filled with someone stable in the role. Of the possibilities, I first look to see the trade tag on Clase. If it’s pretty high, then I look to see if it can turn into a bigger trade for both Clase and Gimenez to address two needs in one if you’re having to give up big pieces. Now if that isn’t the option that works, then the Marlins need for their one big spend to be an all-in effort to sign Hader. It’s too risky to not finally address this because we’ve seen it be a big determiner of the Marlins success or failure over the last three seasons.
It should be interesting this offseason.

Tim Anderson from 2018-2022 was a pretty dang good player. I think he’s going to be the steal of the off-season for some team.
MarlinsFanBase
I think so too. His game is a fit for the Marlins, and I think he’d fit well in our stadium. I would love for us to get him and for him to rebound.
I’m curious to see what the Marlins do with their offseason needs. For the first time in a while, we don’t have a long list of hard-to-fill needs.

@MarlinsFanBase
Let’s hope he doesn’t get his feelings hurt in Miami.
RunDMC
Anderson would be a knockout in MIA. Put his pillow contract underneath him so no one is hurt.
MarlinsFanBase
Yep, that’s exactly what I think happens if the Marlins land him. Everyone walks away happy…especially if he rebounds.
LordD99
Anderson could be the Bellinger of 2024.

Knizner probably could be an answer, but the reality is that he wouldn’t get the primary role over Fortes. If he has it at some point, it would be in a scenario in which Fortes hasn’t secured the job in the early to first half of 2024, and Knizner came in and flat out won the position over Fortes.

I love winter meetings cause I get to say ‘yes darling I can’t do anything about it now but I promise I’ll take care of it in the summer’ and at that time the statement is said I have the best intentions of following through.

I like Caratini.

Shortstop give Anderdon a one year contract. Wait for the best propects to develop so they can have capital to trade for a longterm option at Shortstop. Also on the defensive side like Nuñes s lot, plus his speed is unreal. Give him a chance. Nuñes reminds me of Mark Belanger. Baltimore won a lot of games with him at Shortstop because his D.
This one belongs to the Reds
Happy Winter Meetings, everyone! May you be happy with your team’s new players and then have a happy holiday season. Spring training will be here before you know it.

69 Days – 13 Hours – 51 minutes to Spring Training, assuming a February 12th report to camp date.

I’d be shocked if Miley gets paid $10M or more by the Brewers. Maybe they give him 2/$14 with incentives but I can’t see them paying him $10M+ for 2024 with his injury history and age.

AF needs to show the fan base that management isn’t happy with the on the field playoff product.
Fire Krall
They should trade for Soto…Try to extend him then go into a full rebuild after selling Burnes Adames etc.

Heard an interesting rumor of JK, Grissom & Elder for Cease.
Probably not true & has not even been discussed but interesting none the less.
