The Reds have engaged in conversations with the White Sox regarding right-hander Dylan Cease this offseason, per Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Cease, 28 this month, has been among the most discussed trade targets of the offseason to this point, with Chicago GM Chris Getz suggesting yesterday that there’s no club in the majors without at least some level of interest in the right-hander’s services. Wittenmyer goes on to caution that “nothing concrete” has developed from the discussions between the sides at this point.
The fit certainly makes sense for the Reds. The right-hander is coming off something of a down season in 2023 during which he posted a fairly pedestrian 4.58 ERA, though his 3.72 FIP, elevated .330 BABIP, and unusually low 69.4% strand rate all indicate there may have been some bad luck baked into those results. The idea that Cease may be closer to a front-of-the-rotation arm than his 2023 results indicate is backed up by his phenomenal 2022 campaign, during which he posted a sterling 2.20 ERA with a 3.10 FIP while striking out a whopping 30.4% of batters faced. Overall, Cease has pitched to a 3.54 ERA (121 ERA+) with a 3.40 FIP in 97 starts since the start of the 2021 season, striking out 29.8% of batters faced while walking 10.1% along the way.
That sort of playoff-caliber starter would provide a major boost to a Reds club that struggled to a rotation ERA of 5.43 this year, bottom three in the majors ahead of only Oakland and Colorado. The club’s situation isn’t quite as dire as that figure may make it seem; the club has an interesting group of young starters headlined by Hunter Greene and Andrew Abbott that also includes the likes of Graham Ashcraft, Nick Lodolo, Brandon Williamson, and Connor Phillips. The club also recently landed right-hander Nick Martinez on a two-year deal last week, fortifying their rotation depth. That being said, the group offers little certainty aside from Greene, and the addition of a frontline starter such as Cease would take pressure off the club’s younger arms as they look to establish themselves as big league starters.
Cease is far from the only arm the club has looked into who could fill this role. Cincinnati has reportedly discussed a deal for right-hander Shane Bieber with the Guardians while also showing interest in Rays righty Tyler Glasnow. While Cease figures to cost more in terms of prospect capital more than either of those two alternatives, he’s the only one of the trio controllable beyond the 2024 campaign. He also figures to be the cheapest to acquire from a financial perspective, as Cease is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to received just $8.8MM in his penultimate trip through arbitration. By contrast, Bieber is projected for a $12.2MM salary in 2024 while Glasnow’s salary for next season is locked in at $25MM.
The Reds are far from the only team engaged on Cease. While Getz’s remark that all 29 other clubs have interest in Cease’s services is surely at least somewhat hyperbolic, the right-hander has garnered plenty of interest this winter with the Dodgers, Cardinals, Mets, Orioles, and Red Sox among the clubs to show interest in the hurler so far this offseason. The Braves have also been connected to Cease frequently over the past several weeks, though more recent reports have downplayed the club’s interest. Even so, the market for Cease is clearly robust, and there have been indications that a deal for the righty may not come together until the top of the rotation market- which includes the likes of Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell– has been sorted out.
Cease is not the only player Wittenmyer suggests the Reds have interest in, as he also connects the club to infielder Jeimer Candelario. That the Reds have interest in Candelario’s services is nothing new, as the sides were linked last month at the outset of free agency. At the time, it seemed likely that the club’s interest in Candelario may have been predicated on a trade from the club’s glut of infielders that already includes Elly De La Cruz, Noelvi Marte, Matt McLain, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Jonathan India, and Spencer Steer. While such a deal has not yet materialized, it seems possible the club’s plans may not be so simple. While not discussing the switch-hitting Candelario specifically, Krall told reporters (as relayed by Wittenmyer) recently that the club “could add a switch-hitter that plays the infield” to their positional mix, with such a move allowing the Reds to “push Steer to the outfield more” often.
Candelario, 30, would add some balance to the club’s righty-dominated infield mix. Only De La Cruz (a fellow switch-hitter) ever bats from the left side among Cincinnati’s bevy of young infielders, though lefties TJ Friedl and Jake Fraley both help to balance the overall lineup somewhat as members of the club’s outfield mix. Candelario, who hit .251/.336/.471 overall last season with the Nationals and Cubs, could be in line of a three- or four-year deal this offseason according to Wittenmyer. That’s in line with MLBTR’s prediction of a four-year, $70MM deal that earned Candelario the #13 spot on our annual Top 50 MLB free agents list.
The Angels, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays and Nationals are among the other clubs Candelario has been connected to this offseason, though it’s worth noting that Arizona subsequently landed Eugenio Suarez in a trade with the Mariners, likely taking them out of the sweepstakes for the third baseman. Despite that interest, Wittenmyer suggests that Candelario’s market, like that of many upper-level positional free agents, has been held up by the bidding on two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani has commanded the attention of big-market clubs such as the Jays, Angels, Dodgers, Cubs and Giants to this point in the offseason, and as such it’s hardly a surprise that the league’s other top free agent hitters prefer to wait out Ohtani’s free agency in case one of those teams looks to pivot after missing out on the superstar.
The-Two-Germanys
Gee, that would be nice.
Braves Butt-Head
Cincy could easily win that Division with 2 more starting pitchers . They gonna have an increase in attendance they should go for it.
HBan22
Reds fans proved last season that when the club becomes competitive, they show up. They’re an ace away from being a legit threat in the NL, so it would be great to see them land Cease.

As long as we only give up prospects I’m stoked for this

Participation trophy.
YourDreamGM
We offered them India and they laughed at us.
Reds Have Discussed Dylan Cease Trade With White Sox!!!!!!!
stanton100
How do you know India was offered and they chuckled? Are you really on the inside or just
a boring bull sheeter?
YourDreamGM
Obviously my comment was a slight exaggeration to add a lil humor. But the Reds front office valued India almost as high as their fans did and teams they attempted to trade with valued him much lower.
stanton100
Again, how do you know?
YourDreamGM
Reds front office openly said this to reporters. I know a decent amount of people in baseball but didn’t need them in this one.
This one belongs to the Reds
Discussion is great and all, but can Po Boy close the deal finally?
dhud
Would you just stop. You’re not cute. You’re not smart. And your criticism of Krall is wildly off base.
Big whiffa
Wildly ! And you are so stubborn in your opinion it gets worse daily lol.
I am not a krall fan but this is what I like about him. This is literally his 4th rebuild. He’s been failing for a decade to put a quality product on the field and part of that time – reds pretended to be Yankees and did it terribly! They pretend like that can develop players and did that terribly too. And now the reds don’t act like that- thank God !
Under krall, reds have been elite at identifying international and stateside talent. Right up there w Seattle, SD, and dodgers. And their international scouting program has been delivering elite results. This has created the deepest farm system reds have ever had by a mile.
So just as long as they keep 10-12 future contributors (not borderline mlb talent but contributors) then their window can stay permanently open. It doesn’t matter they loose ces and steer and lodolo bc Stewart Hinds and petty will replace them and reds won’t miss a beat.
And they can’t keep that window open if they trade 12 or 18 years of control for 2-3 years. Like your plan which the reds have repeatedly failed at.
So as long as that seems Kralls plan- being patient and keep loading on talent – he has my tentative support and that support grows daily
dhud
Though I agree with almost all of what you’re saying whiffa, I don’t know if saying he’s “been failing for a decade” is necessarily fair. He’s been “part” of 4 rebuilds, sure, but it wasn’t him actually calling shots until 2018. In my mind, following the 2020 season was one (and you could argue and bicker about lost revenue or bleeding heart billionaires all day – I won’t) and the sell off of Gray/Mahle/Castillo as two. What he HAS done repeatedly and done very well is sign fringe vets looking to prove value to fill in innings until actual future pieces have been ready and then flipped those vets for more future value – see Drury, Pham, Naquin…
Franklin Nitty
Identifying talent? Where is the big league production to back it up? He is good at trading cy young worthy pitchers for lottery tickets so far. 100 loss season? No playoff wins? Nick Senzel? Jose Berraro? Hunter Greene has been paid millions to be injured and pitch to a era over 4? So far this is what it is, cant argue results. Keep in mind that he has already been promoted within the organization.
Big whiffa
How bout he’s been learning for a decade w failing results ? I think we can both agree w that. And from my perspective- krall has almost always been in charge and I’m cool w that, and cool w him setting up fall guys – media is crazy lol
Here’s something I had to come to terms with after I realized I couldn’t will myself to root for a new team – that bob c family is so loaded they bought a baseball team. They are also so loaded they could easily support a 200 mil payroll for a sustainable amount of time If they chose too. So they bought a team and have all this money but keep all the executive decisions in house. So from my perspective they seem to be trying to figure out baseball and figure out how to create a winning franchise on their own rather than bringing in gurus w proven success. So if that’s the case – they seem to be turning a corner and finally putting together a sustainable product which is awesome to see. Granted lots of struggles, confusion, and wild emotion through all that but it’s their money and their vision so might as well try to support it and be optimistic for my own mental health
dhud
Nitty 82 wins a year after losing 100 isn’t good enough proof for you that they’re getting better??
dhud
and Nitty I notice you only conveniently mention the young players who haven’t lived up to expectations. You mention nothing of the 3 rookies who received ROY votes this year or scooping up Friedl from under everyone’s eyes or snagging Benson who was overlooked in CLE or Marte or CES who very much held their own as rookies or piecing together a league average bullpen for bottom dollar (yes we can argue if that’s the right strategy or not but it is obviously the reds strategy and they did it)
Big whiffa
Hunter Greene is 24. This will be the season he cements himself atop the reds rotation for years to come.
The talent is all over the field and already in the rotation- are u blind man ?
Franklin Nitty
Yes I failed to mention there are some hits there too. Look, I want to believe this is all going to work out and the results are coming. I just see the Krall supporters completely ignore the big picture with some of these deals. So far only the Mahle trade looks good if the metric is big league production/sucess.
The biggest thing is the fact we couldve had Castillo for 20 million and Sonny wouldve stayed here too. Instead there is a good chance we will trade some of those players to acquire a pitcher a tick under the level of a Castillo or Sonny. So the net results of those deals would not look good at all. Im definitely disgruntled as a fan I will admit, but nothing would make me happier than to see us have a special year.
Franklin Nitty
I seen a team managed by David Bell. But the potential is there, CES impresses me the most so far. Not sure Elly will do any progressing under David Bell and I think he will hold some of the young guys up by not giving them a position or regular spot in the lineup. As far as the talent goes, we will find out this year. I was told by a lot of people how good Berrara (sp) was too and he doesn’t even look like a big leaguer. Fraley and Benson just put together their best seasons after having bad starts to their careers. We are banking on them progressing this year. We are banking on Lodolo and Greene coming back fully healthy. Same for Abbott and Ashcraft. This team could win 90 games or lose 90 games.
Franklin Nitty
I agree with this comment 1000 percent. Well put!
hyraxwithaflamethrower
As a White Sox fan, I most want to see a Cease deal with the Reds or Orioles. The Reds in particular have so many IF that the Sox could solve their IF issues and maybe get a pitcher as well.
cguy
A trade for Cease is a much larger risk than Krall needs to take. right now. Cease will cost 2 or maybe even 3 of the Reds young prospects. Sign a FA SP (Lugo, Stroman, E. Rodriguez) and then develop the rotation from in-house pitchers.
octavian8
Of course it depends on what the Reds to give up for Cease but you’re right. It is a huge risk. Cease has question marks. His numbers dipped last year. There’s no guarantee he will be the ace we traded for. Free agents only cost money which by all accounts we have right now.
Big whiffa
I agree. Go over pay for giolito. Let him eat innings and be that veteran leader. That being said….
Cease for India, sal Stewart, Williamson
Bieber for ashcraft Dunn Richardson
Glasnow for lodolo plus a couple lotto tix.
Greene
Cease
Bieber
Glasnow
Abbott
Phillips starts in louisville and Martinez is 6th starter when needed.
You will compete for NL crown w that rotation !
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Not a chance the Sox go for that trade.
Big whiffa
What is a reasonable return in your opinion ?
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Let’s start by evaluating Cease. Per Fangraphs, he’s been pretty consistent in WAR the last three years, at 4.5, 4.4, and 3.7, respectively. He’s led MLB in starts over that time, so he seems likely to replicate that. Let’s assume a pair of 4 fWAR seasons. At $8M per, that’s $64M in total value, vs about $24M in estimated cost, a surplus of $40M.
Prospects being unproven, the sum of their ceilings has to be higher to make it worth the Sox’ risk. Add to that the interest of a number of teams and I think any deal from the Reds starts with Marte or Arroyo, then Petty or Phillips (depending on whether it’s Marte or Arroyo), and a mid-level.
Here’s the pitch
Agree, if Reds want Cease and Candelario it will cost quite a haul. Probably 6 players. Scary thought.
Big whiffa
That’s why the trade didn’t happen last season. Reds weren’t going to part w 12 years of control over two 2 sure fire prospects for 2 years of cease.
What makes these guys sure fire is that the control is there for the pitchers and the power and walk ratios are there for the hitters. All 4 will be successful big leaguers.
Also all four of those players you mention- none of them have hit their peak value. So you want reds to sell low on guys who will most likely be worth more in June than today while cease with only 2 years control, will be less valuable then if still available.
Lastly the white sox are proven incompetent so whatever the return is – I’m expecting to not be impressed
hyraxwithaflamethrower
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect, so the adage goes. Also, top prospects bust all the time. The price is more than you want it to be, fine, but if the Reds balk on giving up players the Sox actually want, they’ll just deal Cease to somebody else and the Reds’ IF prospects can languish in the minors, blocked by more proven players.
Bieber, Glasnow, and perhaps even Burnes will cost less prospect capital. But I don’t see the Sox getting a bunch of meh players in return for Cease. There has to be a real headliner.
soxygen
I follow the Sox, not the Reds…but it seems like this move would be a year too soon for the Reds. Orioles are where the Reds hope to be in a year or two and make much more sense as a smaller market landing spot for Cease.
This one belongs to the Reds
You either go for it or waste another year of this group before you have to break them up.
They already wasted one, and no one else is sitting on their hands.
Big whiffa
Just bc they will eventually break this team up doesn’t mean their window closed or is closing. It’s more likely they just replaced those guys w better ones from the farm. Reds seem to have a long term sustainable product a la Tampa rays. And I pray they keep it that way !
Franklin Nitty
The Rays have legit proven TALENT in their front office. The Reds have economists in theirs.
Big whiffa
That’s my point too ! Reds FO had to learn they can’t be the Yankees and need to be the rays
Aiden Awe
The trade deadline specifically.
cguy
Just half a season actually. By ASB Reds will have a much clearer picture of what they have and what they need, plus I believe several young prospects will have “breakout seasons” and bring larger returns in trades. Most any effective innings eater will help keep the Reds in the hunt- by the trading deadline, Reds will be loaded for bear.
Jerry A Truth or Dair
Not only is it not a year too soon, it’s months too late. The Reds would have won the Division last year if they had traded for Rodriguez and Cease. They have a gamut of positional depth and they would be stupid to not go with McLain, De La Cruz and Marte. India, CES, and Fairchild are all easily traded.
titanic struggle
You’ve lost your mind. CES isn’t going anywhere, for that matter neither is Marte or Petty…
Here’s the pitch
If the Reds get Candelario it is likely CES is a part of the return imo. Not what I want btw. The Sox want 4 high prospects for Cease, probably 2 high prospects for Candelario. Not a trade a Reds fan probably wants to see.
Franklin Nitty
While those inf prospects rot on the bench or in Louisville? The Reds are to the point where they need a veteran starter like Cease, you cant play all those “shortstops” anyways. What am i missing here?
Big whiffa
Young 20 year olds don’t rot in 3A. They are competing to earn a spot on a competitive squad. That’s high quality competition you absolutely want inside your organization.
What you are missing is that today – there’s 5 other options than cease 2 via trade and 3 via FA. And all will cost less than cease. So if u pay 30% of asking price to trade w rays or 0 to sign someone like ERod – then those are clearly better options than trading sure fire talent for cease
hyraxwithaflamethrower
There are three trade options, all of whom have just one year of control. And those FA options will cost a lot more in cash.
Let those guys compete for AAA spots all they want. The MLB team, you know, the one that matters, can only have a handful of middle IF on the roster. The rest are wasted if they’re MLB-ready.
Lastly, I get it: you’re a Reds fan. You think all of their prospects are can’t miss future superstar wunderkinds. But they’re not, and neither the Sox nor Reds nor other teams will view them as surefire because they actually know how the game works. Look at the top 100 prospect list from any year. How many of those guys became stars, even among the top 20?
This one belongs to the Reds
That would be a nice thought…if the Reds proved they could sign quality FAs in the past couple of years. They haven’t.
Martinez is probably the biggest, and he hasn’t appeared in a game yet.
Big whiffa
You are profiling me and that’s not cool.
I’ve been following prospects statistically for more than a decade and I can project players better off my system if they hit or miss than u can w a 1 year WAR system everyone loves to rave about !
1. How old are u vs league average ? Arroyo is youngest dude in whole league he played in.
2. If your a batter, you have to be able to hit for power at the major league level or you aren’t any good. Riley Greene, the 5th pick or 2019, has always been a bust bc he can’t hit for power. Now he’s playing right field – if Detroit was in AL east, they’d be the last place team bc of that player at that position alone sets them that far back.
3. If you’re a batter, your K ratio needs to be in order.
You have those 3 things – sure fire big leaguer !
Pitching, same,
1. how old are they to league average ? Look how much experience hunter Greene has in the majors and he’s just now 24. He’s not even near his prime years – he’s got TOR wrote all over him !
2. How is their control ? Is their whip in order bc you need your whip in order to build innings
3. K per 9 ratio. Over a K per inning translates to big league success. Phillips a 154 Ks in 105 innings. Sure fire big leaguer.
Lefties
This would be fantastic. Would lessen the blow of Emilio pagan and Nick Martinez signings ($21 mil combined), and have it make more sense.
This one belongs to the Reds
That brings the payroll to a whopping 73 million. I think they can handle it.
rememberthecoop
Shouldn’t it be the other way around – The Sox discussing trade with the Reds? Headline makes it seem like it’s the Reds trading Cease.
stanton100
Where are you Michael Wacha?
titanic struggle
Not in a Reds uniform, let’s keep it that way..
redsorbust
For me the way to go is with a FA SP and the Reds don’t need to spend $25M+to get what they are looking for.
Right now every team is looking for an overpay for pitching via trade. If I am the WS GM, I look for a team that can meet my teams most glaring needs and not scare away a potential match asking for more and if I am Nick Krall I don’t overpay for any SP. So in essence a fair trade for both sides. Let some other team overpay. Reds don’t have to.
