The Red Sox have signed catcher Mark Kolozsvary to a minor league contract, ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reports (via X). The deal contains an invitation to Boston’s big league Spring Training camp.
Kolozsvary’s MLB resume consists of 10 games with the Reds in 2022 and then one game (or, one half-inning as a defensive replacement) with the Orioles this past season. The 28-year-old backstop was designated for assignment and then outrighted shortly after that lone appearance for the O’s, and Kolozsvary landed with the Twins on a minor league deal soon thereafter.
Originally a seventh-round pick for the Reds in the 2017 draft, Kolozsvary hasn’t hit much during his minor league career, and he has only a .174/.282/.301 slash line over 300 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. However, he managed to climb the ladder and reach the majors on the strength of his all-around solid defensive game. It’s the type of skillset that has extended many a catcher’s career, and Kolozsvary will head to Boston’s camp looking to impress either Red Sox brass or perhaps opposing scouts, if he ends up being a late cut.
The Red Sox already have Connor Wong and Reese McGuire lined up as their regular catching tandem, Roberto Perez was signed to a minor league deal earlier in December, and top prospect Kyle Teel could make his MLB debut at some point in 2024. While perhaps somewhat of a crowded situation on paper, teams usually like to have depth in camp at the catcher position, and the Sox will be looking to both continue Teel’s development while also having an acceptable amount of emergency depth on hand at the Triple-A level.

What a bunch of crap and lies they told the fans and media in late October when they hired Breslow.
Fever Pitch Guy
Al – I have to disagree. They told crap, but no lies.
Or they told lies, but no crap.
What a minute … what’s the difference between lies and crap?
They told crappy lies?
They told lies about crap?
I’m so confused!!
GASoxFan
Fever, Ill make it easy – Bloom lied and Henry was full of crap.
As for everyone else:
Let’s be honest, when you look at the pieces coming off the board, you cant really fault Breslow.
Ohtani and ‘Moto had no interest in boston. You can’t force a player to play there, unless someone is suggesting BOS offer $1B to ohtani, who, made it very clear he wanted to win and BOS is stuck with worse than little league infield defense and a messed up inherited roster, or, was Moto supposed to get a $500m contract? The player declined to visit the team before offers were being made. Do you take him against his will for a meeting?
KC did an overpay for an aging arm on a bad deal long term. And this team wasn’t in win-nlw mode. Jealous of the Yankees giving up a huge ransom for a guy who was clear he wants FA? Or the dodgers taking the guy made of glass and doing a massive overpay?
I get it. The last 4 years stunk, the FO lied all the time, and ownership let it all happen. But to cry and moan when a guy has inherited a roster that is a MESS… it legitimately needs a 2 year rebuild. You’re NOT making this team a clear WS contender quickly, and, what moves that were SMART were missed?
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – We always knew when Bloom was lying because his chin would get even longer. I’m still trying to figure out how to tell with Henry.
Still too early to make predictions for 2024 my friend. There’s plenty of money to be spent, and I think at least one big trade to be made. The party is just getting started.
There’s a reason why single game and ST tickets haven’t even gone on sale yet … and the ST games are only 2 months away!!
Randy Red Sox
a “2” year rebuild? What have the last 4 years been? I have said all along that henry simply is happy with spending just enough to stay “somewhat” competitive and is waiting for the prospects to arrive because they will be cheap. When/if they get good they will be let go or traded for more young guys.
all in the suit that you wear
Henry has been spending $200M per year. Not cheap.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
There have been reports claiming that Ohtani did care about Boston but the price tag by the Dodgers swayed him more.
Bloom may have lied but it’s apparent that he’s not all to blame and he was the scapegoat. I think the whole front office is to blame.
FatChance65
Last place 3 out of 4 years is hardly competitive…but I get what you’re saying.
JoeBrady
But to cry and moan when a guy has inherited a roster that is a MESS…
=========================
The Py W/L is 81-81.
In fact, Breslow is inherited a better situation than Bloom did. Both inherited mediocre rosters, but Breslow has a better farm to work with and a much lower payroll relative to our competition.
But past that, it will be identical. If Henry choses to not spend, Breslow will have similar constrictions as Bloom did.
GASoxFan
Joe – were free to agree to disagree, but, I dont think you can go through player by player and claim Bloom inherited a weaker MLB squad than breslow.
Also that w/l got quite a boost from the balanced schedule
Trollfree
Joe – Must you end the year with insanity.
Bloom inherited a WORLD CHAMPION
Breslow inherited 1 all-star hitter and an ancient all-star closer
Breslow has a less farm system to work with because the best players already graduated to the MLB
Henry NEVER chose to not spend. Look at the facts about his spending during the Bloom years. They exceeded the DD years which were down from the Cherington years due to RETAINED Payroll carryover. Bloom spent much more than DD did and Breslow has $237MM to spend in 2024.
BLOOM SUCKED as did your COMMENT. Completely devoid of facts!!!!
User 3180623956
You nailed it, Troll. bloom destroyed a championship roster and turned it into a tee ball roster.
B dog 351
Stop the train joe . Are you serious ? Bloom inherited Mookie, Bogarts , JD. Nate , Devers. He left this guy with Devers and Conner Wong out of that .
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I don’t think Bloom is as bad as you say he was, but to say he’s in a better position than Breslow? Not sure I buy it. What I buy is results. If neither gets there, neither is successful, not one more than the other. I think Henry takes a lot of the blame at this point.
B dog 351
Explorer . You Honestly think this team is equivalent to what bloom inherited? Please explain . All the players I listed and we got Connor Wong out of that . Story signing that’s working out wonderful, Yoshida they didn’t need. An over the hill but effective closer for a last place team. . We should be competing in no time
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Where did I say it was equivalent? I didn’t even infer that, but Breslow was hired to fix the issues that were made. I hold him to the same standards. I also think it wasn’t all Bloom’s fault.
Tyler Norton
Finally, the signing Red Sox fans have been waiting for. An organizational depth catcher!
Fever Pitch Guy
Tyler – We are just glad they haven’t brought back Glitter Belt Boy.
stymeedone
Well, you can’t count on Perez as depth, with his injury history.
NewYorkSoxFan
Seems like this team is banking on dealing some young OFs and/or Yoshida for pitching. Add in Teoscar and Merrifield and maybe we can compete for a wild card.
Easy to sit here and say go after Ohtani and Yomamoto but tbh this team is not a couple stars away. With most of our top prospects ready by 2025, I can see Breslow aiming at that year to really be a threat.
Fever Pitch Guy
NY – It’s true Breslow will need a year to properly evaluate what he’s got, but there’s no way Henry will allow another last place finish.
I’m quite confident they will acquire at least one of Shota, Snell, Burnes or Monty.
They are not gonna give up on Yoshida already, not happening.
LordD99
Fever, allow may not be the correct word. It may just happen in this division. : -)
Fever Pitch Guy
Lord – If things break a certain way, I can see Tampa dropping to last or maybe even Toronto.
But again …. lots of offseason remaining!!
Randy Red Sox
Adding one of those will make very little difference in the AL East. still a last place team in 2024
AL34
Please with this roster you are set up for another last place finish. The Red Sox cannot beat good teams all last year. Toronto ride right over them all year.
JoeBrady
Our record against teams under and over .500 was identical last year. And we took the season series from TO last year, so so much about them riding over us.
Trollfree
Joe – Again with the insanity. The games in 2024 have not been played. They may or may not ride over us. NOBODY knows that. They simply have a far better roster which would suggest it.
Trollfree
Fever – Trading Yoshida while Devers is on the team makes complete sense and it’s not giving up on him, it’s repositioning him in an organization that needs him. We have Devers so Yoshida has little value to us but others need DHs with his skills so get something we need in return.
HighOnPineTar
Yoshida is still a potential Top-10 MVP Caliber hitter when he’s locked in. There were a lot of factors that lead to him burning out the second half, but many seem quick to forget he was top 3 in the AL in hitting / OBP for several months straight past the AS break then hit some fatigue and rough stretches at the plate.
Without the WBC interfering and a year in Boston/America under his belt, I think he’s going to surprise a lot of folks this year.
Would be an absolute mistake to trade him this offseason.
Fever Pitch Guy
High – Thank you, that’s exactly what I’ve been saying. He was one of the best hitters in the league until he tired out late in the season. Amazing how so many forget. More time at DH should solve that issue going forward.
Trollfree
High – You must be high!!! Yoshida is a league average to slightly above league average hitter who can’t field. He didn’t burn out in the second half, teams built books on how to pitch to him and they were right. They didn’t throw those books away during the off season. They are building more details by watching tons of video on him.
Don’t look for him to get better, look for more of the second half Yoshida.
Yoshida is a MUST TRADE due to Devers and the fact that he’s paid about double his worth going forward. He can’t field and we can’t afford to play Devers in the field so he is a MUST TRADE.
We need pitching so trade Yoshida for PITCHING!!
rmullig2
They wouldn’t be able to give Yoshida away much less get pitching for him. No team wants to pay 18M for the 1.4 WAR he gives you.
Trollfree
rmullig2 – Totally agree but you still have to try to salvage a bad deal by Bloom.
AL34
We’re back baby. Way to go Breslow, that .200 batting average and 1 homerun should go a long way to help this team in 2024. I told you Breslow is in way over his head. He is an amateur and was not the top guy with the Cubs. He got the job by default because no one was interested in working for the management in there now. You had to be smoking crack if you thought he was going to be able to sign Yamamoto! From what I read there was no 300 million dollar offer from us to him. From what the Boston Herald said, “We flew the white flag almost immediately”. So in summary they followed Yamamoto for years in Japan, targeted him for years as to someone they wanted and then backed out because of the money. I think this team cannot renovate Fenway anymore for more seats and they charge the most they can. This team can’t compete anymore for top free agents. The problem is that they are going to see their attendance drop for the mediocre product they put on the field and that is going to make things worse. Not a bright future. Maybe they should just sell the team in the immediate future.
stymeedone
Yamamoto is a negative value now that he has signed that contract. He’s getting paid more than Garrett Cole. He will have to outperform the Cy Young winner to earn that contract. I don’t expect that to happen. Do you?
Bruin1012
Yamamoto was an ownership decision not a Breslow decision. Ownership isn’t giving a blank check to a new POBO to write a 326 million dollar check.
Fever Pitch Guy
Bruin – More accurately, ownership decides how much the annual team payroll budget will be.
Breslow is the guy who decides how much of that team payroll budget should be allocated to someone like Yamamoto, of course with feedback from ownership.
Bruin1012
I don’t buy that FPG not when it’s a huge long term investment it’s an ownership decision.
JoeBrady
It took me three years, but Red Sans (not necessarily you) now realize the ownership creates the budget, not the GM.
Trollfree
Joe and Bruin1012 – You guys are clueless as to how this works. The managing of the Red Sox organization is like all baseball teams, it’s a process when it comes to acquiring new assets.
1 – The GM presents a deal to the board
2 – The Board evaluates it and either approves it, suggests alternatives or denies it.
3 – The GM modifies the request if it’s not approved or denied.
The money is on the books in many forms. The team makes profits that exceed $300MM per year so they are sitting on a pile of gold that reaches half way up to the roof of Fenway.
If Yamamoto was worth $325MM to Breslow and he submitted it to ownership he would have gotten approval. It’s that simple. They paid $18MM to a schmuck like Yoshida. $33MM to a young SP with a better past performance history would have been a no brainer.
There is no problem with the process. The problem was with Bloom for not requesting better deals. The problem now is with Breslow not having a good enough roster to sell any new Free Agent on coming to Boston. That’s all COMPLETELY on the shoulders of Bloom. He destroyed the organization and the owners are guilty of hiring him but NEVER have they denied him money since he didn’t attempt to sign Mookie for fair market value like DD did. He got fired for it. Bloom got hired to get rid of Mookie. The money has remained constant across time. It’s there for the taking but the GM must ask for it.
Bruin1012
Actually Troll I’m very aware of how it works but apparently you have no clue. If you really think that Breslow had the authority to sign YY for whatever he wanted to sign him for your more clueless then I thought. If you really think that Breslow gets approval at 325 million cart blanche if he asks well you’re clueless.
What really happens is that Breslow tells ownership what it takes to sign a guy like YY and ownership decides because ultimately they foot the bill it’s simple as that.
acell10
careful Bruin KD17 might block you for making too much sense…
Trollfree

FPG: you guys see Verdugo bash Cora? I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m on Cora’s side on that one. Truth be told, I never liked Verdugo’s persona or disposition. But, he unintentionally illustrated the biggest problem with Boone’s leadership while trying to give him credit: essentially that Boone would’ve “had his back” when Cora didn’t (presumably referring to when he was benched for not showing up).
And he’s right, Boone wouldn’t bench him because Boone is weak; he’s a non-disciplinarian who does nothing but hurt the team.
Yazmyhero
I agree with you 100%. Verdugo has problems, the Yankees will find out soon enough. Judge and Rizzo will police him, so Boone won’t have to. There wasn’t anybody on the Sox roster with balls enough to do it. Be lucky it’s only for one season.

Yankees and Sox are both in a make money don’t spend money holding pattern. Sox will sell out every game all season even finishing last and the Yankees lol who now charge 4 X their previous stadiums ticket prices only need to sell 25% of the seats per game for what ultimately equates a sell out. Make money money make money.
Yankee Clipper
Yankees finally realized this year that the “spend only as much as we absolutely have to” mentality isn’t working. They finally went for it this offseason but it may be too late now. Hopefully they didn’t completely burn Cole’s and Judge’s primes.
178iq
They sold A J and Cole on something they never intended on providing… they need 2 superstars to sell merch and tix… they will add players by trade (Soto) every year but with an almost O% probability that they will resign for long term. Astors, Rays, and LA are they places to go to have a chance to win now. ALSO- the whole shaving thing is a problem. These guys have massive amounts of testosterone and High pumping through their systems – last thing they want to do is have twice a day- YES- they have to shave 2 times for a clean shaven look- especially before a game. Who wants to think about that ?!?! These guys can have NO CHANCE for not shaving for a hit streak or to NOT SHAVE while in a slump.
JoeBrady
they will add players by trade (Soto) every year but with an almost O%
======================
How often do they trade for a good one-year player and them let him walk?
LordD99
Clipper, you may he right, but I will point out that the Yankees have spent exactly zero dollars on free agents thus far this off season, and Soto’s salary will be more than covered by departures!
That said, I do expect them to sign someone now that Yamamoto is off the board.
Yankee Clipper
L99: True, but at least they’ve traded the necessary prospects and were willing to play at the top of the market. Nonetheless, it’s a really interesting point because it seems to many like they have spent. I didn’t realize that until I read your post.
Who do you think would be the best acquisitions from this point forward, brother?
And Merry Christmas, man! Hope you have a great one!

This year they had the 2nd-highest payroll in MLB and the highest in the league by a very wide margin.
Last offseason they spent $574M!!!
Yankee Clipper
FPG: No, you’re right and I didn’t mean to imply they were cheap. Hal is not cheap. But they avoided spending money when they could’ve acquired a critical piece (like Harper, for example).
They’ve spent money, just not well at all. To analogize this, it’s like they’ve avoided putting a new roof on their house so they could remodel the interior. Priorities were a bit backwards.
Merry Christmas FPG!

Dear BoSox fans, you wanted a ring, you got it… Dombrowski goes in gets a ring, destroys farm, destroys payroll and the leave teams figuring out what to do. Bloom as much hate has he got, he rebuilt the farm system, I see some fans asking to trade them for rentals, freaking insane. You guys still paying Chris Sale ffs.
AL34
How many of Dombroski’s trades of young players actually did something? Who Moncado and Kopech? One had a decent first year and struggles after that and Kopech had TJ surgery. None of the other rookies he traded did anything earth shattering.
all in the suit that you wear
I think the focus should be on trade value. Dombrowski traded away a lot of the trade value from the farm system. Bloom has built up some trade value, but I think it is basically a middle-of-the-pack farm system. I don’t think it is the no. 5 farm system as Baseball America says as they do not have many pitching prospects.
JoeBrady
“Bloom has built up some trade value, but I think it is basically a middle-of-the-pack farm system.”

Basically, I agree. Maybe slightly better than middle, but maybe 10? But I believe when he arrived, the farm was ranked 29th or 30th.

Joe: I usually agree with MLB Pipeline’s rankings. They have the Red Sox rated at no. 16 now. Last year they were at no. 11. I assume the drop is due to the promotion of Casas and Bello.
JoeBrady
Dombrowski goes in gets a ring, destroys farm, destroys payroll and the leave teams figuring out what to do.
————————-
That’s about it. When Bloom arrived, we had the highest payroll , about a .500 team, and maybe the 29th or 30th worst farm.
acell10
if you’re lucky you get a ring with Dumbo in charge. Detroit never got one and were left in shambles.
User 3180623956
DD did NOT destroy the farm, that’s complete bloominati b.s. and he left essentially a WS championship roster which was immediately dismantled by bloom.
acell10
DD absolutely DID destroy the farm. That’s delusional DD garbage propaganda and that alleged WS championship roster dropped to .500 due to several of his misguided contracts he handed out.
User 3180623956
Name one player he traded away that amounted to anything and who had an open path to their mlb roster that didn’t bring back a key piece to winning in 2018. Injuries to the pitching staff killed that 2019 team thanks to cora’s giving them ST off and messing with Sale’s delivery.
acell10
again more revisionist history. He wildly overpaid at the time in almost every trade he made and who’s to say that the players he traded in a different environment would have panned out? We could play that game too.
How about this game. Name one of long term contracts DD signed that was beneficial? I’m sure you’ll try to claim that Price was but he was mediocre before and horrible after. You’ll try to say Eovaldi but he was hurt or mediocre the majority of the time too.
Trollfree
Acell10 – Refusing to write facts!!! Not surprising since you don’t actually know any!!! hahahaha
DD’s farm guys are now the stars of the future for Boston. Bloom had top picks and wasted them on guys like Yorke and Mayer. The fourth pick should be producing more than he has so far. Maybe some day he will but Bloom only got him because he tanked the Red Sox in 2020.
DD’s guys are contributing and they won 3 divisions while accumulating these guys. That’s great drafting!!!
The roster dropped to .500 as Bloom dismantled the team. That’s obvious to even the most naive Red Sox fans. You give up Mookie and Price, your winning percentage drops. You give up Benny, Eovaldi, Bogaerts and JD your winning percentage plummets.
Cora created the issues with the two contracts, Price and Sale. Long histories of success ended by the same manager!! Coincidence or a HORRIFIC MANAGER? Even you can figure this one out. HORRIFIC MANAGER. Beyond that Cora also lacks integrity. Quite the doubleheader of managerial skills!!! hahaha
Cora is the essence of despicable behavior in a manager.
acell10
KD:17 you’re so laughable with your revisionist history and how divorced from reality you are. You use no facts to make any of your arguments then accuse others of not knowing any as part of your deny deny accuse strategy… The farm was terrible. All pertinent rankings outlets said as much since those places don’t fit your worldview they are wrong . The only potential “future stars” produced are Bello and Casas. whom I’m sure that Dumbo didn’t even know who Bello was. outside of Sale and occasionally Eiovaldi when he wasn’t outright awful or hurt which was the majority of the time DD’s “guys” barely if at all contributed to winning division titles.
He had four years of drafts and signings and has produced two above average major leaguers . His drafting was trash and his international signings weren’t much better
Since you’re incapable of being objective or making a fair argument you just resort to one of the two punching bags you have left: cora and Devers. Cora didn’t sign Sale or Price to those extensions. In fact Cora wasn’t even the manager when Price was signed.
JaySox
This is how I see it. We won 78 games last year. In order to be a contender, we need to win 12 more games. To achieve this, we definitely need pitching. And while Yamamoto would have been great, we just need to add 2 good pitchers to get 12+ more wins.
Trollfree
JaySox – COMPLETELY agree. Not only do we need to get 2 top flight SPs we need to do two very very important things:
1 – Fire Cora
2 – Move Devers to DH and trade Yoshida to fix a hole
You will get 12 wins with those 2 actions and 2 SPs.

The fact they we were told we are going after pitching yet reports claim we are looking at outfielders and catchers is very concerning. This will be the fourth catcher we have now, and what’s the point of having four catchers if we don’t have pitching? We can’t even keep four on our roster. I have no clue what they are doing anymore. Completely lost. If this is part of a bigger deal, then why do we keep making smaller and smaller deals instead of finally putting the pieces together inherently? That’s exactly what Bloom did for the past three years.
Bloom or no Bloom, this whole front office is a mess and at this point I feel bad that Bloom took the hit, because it’s clearly not all his doing. Hopefully this will all come together in the coming days, but at this point, it’s wishful thinking until it happens. I hope I’m wrong about everything

The minor league teams need catchers. Breslow will not be advertising his plans. All a reporter needs to report that the Red Sox have interest in someone is to hear they called his agent once.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
He said we would be after pitching. That hasn’t come full scale. He doesn’t need to advertise his plans, but he should follow what he said.
all in the suit that you wear
Agreed. I think the better pitchers were waiting to see where Yamamoto went so the people who lost out on Yamamoto can potentially have a bidding war for them. Breslow can’t control that they want to wait.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I’m giving him the benefit of doubt but after the years we’ve had, I feel it’s not unreasonable to be impatient.
acell10
there’s nothing wrong with adding catchers and outfielders. the rest of the needs of the MLB team and minors don’t come to a stretching halt to focus only on one aspect of the team. That said the pitching does need to be addressed and it’s becoming late to do so.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Nothing against the signing as it doesn’t really hurt us. I was unaware of the situation in the Minors. The main concern, however, is getting the pitchers we need to succeed.

I have said the same thing for years. None of the rookies Dombroski traded did anything earth shattering with other teams. Please wake me up when Breslow does something to improve this team. I have seen nothing but chaos and disorganization this off season so far. This is Bloom 2.0. The only reason Bloom signed Devers long term last year was because he was going to catch hell for a story being injured again and needing surgery last year. What did he miss half of the season

Thec – Usually the DD haters are Detroit or some other team fans because they didn’t win during his reign but came close. Like Boston, the GMs that followed DD were morons and killed the the team left to them.
DD is a HOF GM and firing him was the downfall of the organization. Chris Young in Texas is a second coming of DD and he built a world championship team in 2 years versus 3 but to be fair to DD Boston might have won in 2017 too except they played Houston and the cheating Cora in the first round of the playoffs.

Dd Sure killed it with the price and sale contracts

Pool – The signing of a Cy Young winner is a bad idea? Aren’t we considering signing Snell? Look into your glass ball and predict instead of using hind sight to how well Snell will do. Now add Cora to the mix and tell me how well Snell would do in Boston? DD didn’t take into account the Cora impact on Price and Sale. He signed two guys with great histories and then Cora entered the picture. Farrell did fine with both but Cora destroyed both of them by being the all-knowing (irony) Manager who never pitched a day in his life but advised top flight pitchers on what they were doing wrong.
The Price and Sale contracts are COMPLETELY on CORA.
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
Just UGH!!

My theory is Bloom was fired, NOT, for what he was doing but not making the Sale deal to Texas. Texas was going to take 100% of the salary and send back a couple of middling prospects. Now they are stuck with Sale and that contract. All they did was swap Bloom for Breslow with the same K Mart bin roster building.
The Sox are under the luxury tax and have a lot of money freed up. Yamamoto was an EASY gamble to take. It cost ONLY money.
I fully expect they will sign all guys like Merrifield for 2B and maybe a decent guy like Montgomery. There will be NO big signing or trade. Just more lip service.
I still think the botched soccer deal and overextending by purchasing the Pittsburgh Penguins have killed them. I would not be surprised if it is make the roster leaner to sell the team off.

Four of Red Sox top 30 prospects are catchers plus this one and Perez…plus Wong and McGuire. That’s eight catchers deep…seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, and so on.

baseballteam – Outstanding!!! hahaha Yes, go big or go home. We were all thinking it was a call for SPs not Catchers but Breslow knows better. After all, he is a genius!!
I’m guessing he sees a sudden run on catchers due to injuries in 2024 so we can deal from a position of strength!! Heck we might be able to turn one of those catchers into a Brasier or a Robles!!! hahaha

I just heard a rumor that Josh Phegley was trying to find Breslow’s phone number!!! He wants to be a part of the new depth at catcher in Boston and is willing to come out of retirement for it!! His concern is he may be too good to be part of the depth!!
