“The Dodgers are showing interest in seemingly every pitcher but Blake Snell,” Jon Heyman of The New York Post writes, running counter to Heyman’s own report from a month ago suggesting that Los Angeles was one of the teams in on the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner. While Heyman didn’t go into specifics about why Snell may no longer be on the Dodgers’ radar, obviously much has changed for L.A. within the last month — namely the Shohei Ohtani signing and (on the more immediate pitching front) the impending trade and extension involving Tyler Glasnow.
Since Los Angeles exceeded the luxury tax last season, the Dodgers had to give up $1MM in international bonus pool money and their second- and fifth-highest picks in the 2024 draft as compensation for Ohtani, who rejected the Angels’ qualifying offer. Snell also rejected a QO from the Padres, so the thought of giving up two more picks to add Snell might simply not be palatable for the Dodgers. While Snell’s market has been a little less clear than other top pitchers on the free agent market, such clubs as the Giants, Red Sox, and Padres have all been linked to Snell at various points, and it remains to be seen what other suitors might emerge once the likes of Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Jordan Montgomery are off the board. The Dodgers continue to be involved in the hunt for Yamamoto, and could pursue other trade options beyond Glasnow in order to address the lack of proven depth in their rotation.
More from around the NL West…
- The Giants remain interested in potentially re-signing Sean Manaea, The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reports. There hasn’t been much buzz on the left-hander since he opted out of the final year (and a $12.5MM salary) of his previous contract with San Francisco to test the open market, though it stands to reason that Manaea might get more looks as more and more free agent pitchers come off the board. Likewise, the Giants’ pitching needs haven’t really changed since the offseason began, and Manaea might be a reasonable addition even if they did land Yamamoto or Snell considering that the Giants could deal from their crop of young pitchers to bolster their lineup. Manaea had a 4.44 ERA and an above-average 25.7% strikeout rate over 117 2/3 innings for the Giants last season, working in a modified swingman role as a starter, bulk pitcher, or piggyback starter.
- Eduardo Rodriguez’s past history with Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo helped pave the way to the Snakes’ four-year, $80MM contract with the free agent southpaw, as Rodriguez told reporters (including Theo Mackie and Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic). Hazen was Boston’s GM and Lovullo the bench coach during Rodriguez’s past stint with the Red Sox, and this familiarity resulted in what Hazen described as a two-hour meeting that touched on both the past and what Rodriguez can bring to the D’Backs going forward. Rodriguez and agent Gene Mato met with seven teams during the Winter Meetings, and the field was narrowed to the D’Backs and a mystery team before Arizona sealed the deal in a second sitdown.

I rather have Snell over Glasnow.

Too late
JerseyShoreScore
In reality, your preference would have been Pepiot/Snell rather than Glasnow…. That is how I viewed it. I think keeping Pepiot could have prevented the need to give a Giolito type veteran $15 or $20 million to fill out the 2024 rotation. Still dislike the Glasnow trade and extension.
captainsalty
I really like Pepiot’s stuff and wouldn’t have been inclined to move him for Glasnow unless Arozarena was the OF coming with him.
cobby100
Still pissed about it. Bad trade.

Snell is definitely more durable, that’s for sure.
Makes you wonder what the Dodgers’ Plan B will be if they don’t get Yamamoto. I assumed they would add 1 starter via trade and another in free agency. I’m still inclined to believe that they’ll go the free agent route because it would be very un-Dodger-like to deplete the farm system trying get Cease. But hearing the lack of interest in Snell makes me wonder if they may do just that.
underdog
Snell is costlier in both money and draft picks though, and tho generally healthier, not a guarantee to be a deep pitcher either.
amk1920
Boras client and would forfeit a 3rd and 6th round pick basically giving them no top picks after their 1st rounder. Glasnow has better stuff and doesnt walk the ballpark
Pickle_Britches
Snell fixing to get paid and he’ll end up being over paid as he’s overrated and they’re smart enough to see that lol
Poolhalljunkies
Except this year…technically snell was rated the best in his league based on winning the cy young
coloredpaper
@poolhall and @pickle I agree with you both. While his CY was well deserved, he hasn’t shown he can repeat that performance, imo.

If Mark Polishuk is right that the Giants might re-sign Manaea, I”ll be even more disgusted with Zaidi. Manaea is awful and will simply hold back some of SF’s young arms.

if Jack Flaherty got a 1yr/$14 mil dollar deal, I feel like the Giants should just offer a SP like Giolito 2yr/player opt out..I think they could do him a Rodon/Gausman type of nagic on him

If I never see another 2yr contract with a 1yr opt out, I’ll be happy. And Giants need to aim higher than Giolito this year.

@Pete oh I can definitely see Zaidi making a meaningless bargain basement signing.

Flaherty deal was insane money for his recent performance. hope he bounces back for them.
Pete'sView
Why? Because you’ve got blinders on and are still following the old news? (See; Jung Hoo Lee)
dubtastic
they should aim higher than Giolito but the Giants literally need to fill at least 3 SP spots for the rotation..unless they play the unproven bullpen opener game again
Pete'sView
I think one major acquisition (a #1 or #2) will be sufficient. Webb, addition, Harrison, Cobb. and either Winn, Whisenhunt or Black or Beck (or any combination). Giants young arms are impressive.
And they won’t employ the Opener approach like before, they’ve already said as much publicly.

Louisville Slugger to the Cranium would benefit you immensely.

Not for the price he’s going to go for. In my opinion, he won’t repeat a CYY performance next season but that’s what you’re going to pay for.
SFG.1
I don’t know, we’ll see how it goes, but I agree that Snell would be a better choice.
HBan22
I’d rather have Snell/Pepiot than just Glasnow too. I’m surprised the Dodgers aren’t more interested in Snell.
TradeAcuna
Sounds like the Dodgers are still holding a grudge against Snell.

Sir, I haven’t changed my name in forever.
At this point, just trade Acuna anyway if you don’t plan to fix the rotation.
SalaryCapMyth
That’s just silly. I think we should keep our MVP!
I could swear you changed it but maybe I just saw someone else I thought was you.
TradeAcuna
I do too but with AA never acquiring an adequate starter, why bother keeping him if they keep losing in the DS.
Not a clever name
Would love to have Snell, as for Manaea, he was a better pitcher that his stats suggest in my opinion, he seemed to be much better the second half of the season and that was about the time unfortunately that the Giants defense started to get worse. I think he is a solid 3 or 4depending on the team. I still think he should have taken the 12 million so I am suspecting he didn’t want to play in the Bay Area anymore.
John Bird
More likely he wanted a multi-year deal which he will probably get at more than 12 mil/yr.
stymeedone
If Lynn goes for $12MM, everyone else should be more.
foppert2
I agree on Manaea. Sneaky good get for someone. My totally uneducated opinion was that he added a couple of mph via driveline prior to last season and struggled to control it early on. Kept missing high. Got it under control as the season progressed and finished strong. Team guy as well. There wasn’t a pitching role he didn’t do and never bitched about it.
claude raymond
fopp2, are you the same as fopp? I just don’t remember the 2 at the end. Anyway, Spotrac has the Dodgers at $251 mil current tax salary (Cots has $256 mil). They’re are now in a 4th straight penalty mode. And they’ve already lost 2 picks for the Ohtani signing and lost the international signing $. My question for you and any knowledgeable Dodger fans is: Are the Dodgers concerned with these penalties at present? Are they in a WS or bust mode? Will they spend whatever it takes to win it all? Hader, Yamamoto, etc? It sure seems like it’s all or nothing. Thoughts?
mab51357
Probably should ask Ohtani these questions. He runs the team now. Pitcher hitter and front office exec. He can do many things. Lol
foppert2
Hey Claude. Yes. Same guy. Captain Judge got be banned (again) for calling a spade a spade. It’s how those bitchy types roll.
I’m a Giant fan, but yes, it certainly does feel like it’s all or nothing for the Dodgers. It was explained to me last week that their tv deal is massively in their favour. Gives them freedom that others don’t have. Don’t mind that at all. I prefer supporting a David in a battle with the Goliaths.
norcalblue
I certainly have no real knowledge or insight. Only Friedman knows the answer to your question. It is my sense though that the penalties you are referencing are the ONLY consequences that he cares about. The same would be true for every other big market team that cares about winning, including SF.
norcalblue
Come on man. Your “David” has even more money than Guggenheim. Farhan offered the same deal to Ohtani, he just didn’t get him. Your team is playing on the same field with the same resources as all the other big market teams.
foppert2
It wasn’t a criticism. The analogy was more about the respective payrolls. I’ve got no idea what the Giants actual ability to spend is and whether they can feasibly match the Dodgers. They tell me they run at break even, and as there is no evidence to the contrary, I believe it. I was told the difference maker with the Dodgers is the TV deal, and I believe that too.
But sure, the Giants are a Goliath compared to others. Point taken.
claude raymond
Fopp, you and i have had many discussions9n this site so I’m well aware of your Giants Fandom and I cant believe that YOU got banned and that knucklehead is still active.

He didn’t like pitching for Kapler either, but he also opted out after Kapler was fired. He pitched for Melvin 2 years ago so maybe he re-signs. Wouldn’t mind having him back. He was much better in 2nd half.
Jean Matrac
The fact that Manaea opted out after Kapler was fired doesn’t say much IMO. Players seem to prefer the security of years over a higher AAV. Most guys would take 2/20 over 1/12. He opted out for a multi-year deal. Plus, a guarantee to start would be a big factor in signing/re-signing him.
disadvantage
@mab
Do you have any sources on Manaea disliking pitching for Kapler? I can believe it, seeing as he probably thought he was signing as a starter, I just haven’t heard anything of that nature.
Pete'sView
Sean Manaea is a #5 or #6! If you disagree, even considering he had a better second half last season, take a look at his career stats.
claude raymond
I see him I’m a Yusmeiro Petit role. Or Affeldt but not as a starter. But it’s too early in free agency to even consider him imo.
grandsalametime
I think Manaea Single hated the role that Kapler put him in. He wanted to be a starter. I think that’s what Bob Melvin will do.
Jean Matrac
gst, I agree. Even though Manaea didn’t air his dislike for the bulk pitching role the way Wood did, doesn’t mean he didn’t. It’s safe to assume most guys who are used to starting wouldn’t like that role. But I think it was that combined with him pitching well enough in the second half to try for a multi-year contract.
Melchez17
I wonder if Scottie Harris knew there were other teams with interest in ERod?Scottie Harris is the Clown Show.
Melchez17
In Scotties defense… what decent player would even consider going to the Clown Show in Detroit? Harris is an idiot. He totally blew the draft… then he screwed up at the trade deadline.
I wish Avila was back… and I didn’t even like him.
mab51357
As a Giants fan i am happy Scott Harris is a Tiger now. But, as Melchez17 said, Harris inherited a bad situation especially now that Baez opted in. Talk about a horrible contract. Baez is a head case. At least he is playing badly in relative anonymity..
Melchez17
I’m not too upset about Baez… at least he plays great defense and he gets a hit every now and again. If Baez had opted out, it would be Kriedler or Maton at short. Lord knows Scottie wouldn’t go after anyone decent.
stymeedone
Yes Baez is the exception, but HARRIS has been gifted a young team, full of talent, all developed by Avila, after DD emptied the cupboards.
Motor City Beach Bum
Melchez…his signings this offeseason make sense and between those signings and the players coming up from the minors they are looking like AL Central champs, unless Minnesota does something drastic. Erod needed to go. Harris’ screwed up but Erod deserves some of the blame too.
His drafting this year made sense and they got McGonigle by taking Clark who did nothing to make me think he wasn’t a good pick. Langford had a nice hot streak, but so did Kevin Maas once upon a time, so I’ll believe it when he does it consistently. In 2-3 years we’ll know if Clark is the next Kirk Gibson and was the right choice and if your favorite player in Texas is just the next Joey Gallo. I’ll check back with you then so one of us can say I told you so 😉
Hopefully there are more moves to come. Sign Yamamoto for a signature move (doubtful) or even Imanaga, and package Manning or Olsen plus to Cincy for Marte, Stewart, Arroyo or some combo. They need a Baez replacement (Arroyo) in the near future…he’s going nowhere fast. Marte can play multiple positions…stick him at 3B for now.
Harris has done better this offseason now that he has a GM in place.
Melchez17
I’m all for trading for prospects… bring it. No way Clark does better than Langford. I doubt McGonigle makes a major league roster. A singles hitting 2B? He’s no Arraez.
Langford will be a Jim Rice type… Clark will not be a Kirk Gibson… more like Kevin Kiermaier… who isn’t terrible, but no Jim Rice.
Motor City Beach Bum
Let’s hope I’m right and we have another Kirk Gibson type OF and a Lou Whittaker type 2B! If not I’ll gladly eat crow on it in 2-3 years. Now they just need to sit Baez and go find the next Trammell. By the way I like Langford as well and dont see him being the next Joey Gallo, but with that name he was totally Texas material 😉
Hopefully they are not done adding…Justin Foscue from Texas and Tyler Black From Milwaukee both can fill in at multiple positions and should be playing at the MLB level. They have great K to BB ratios and OBP at AAA. Milwaukee nedds starters and Texas needs relievers. Black probably will fill their 3B hole but Foscue seems to be blocked. A young SS would be nice too since there is no obvious replacement for Baez.
DODGER JR
If Heyman is saying the Dodgers are out on Snell, expect them to sign Snell this week. Heyman is the worst of the worst.

If Glasnow had required the extension I would be skeptical. The fact that the Dodgers required it makes me think that the medicals look good and are of little concern.to LA.
solaris602
The Giants are interested in bringing Manaea back? Move on, people. He was a fool to turn down $12.5M. Let someone else pay a premium for pedestrian results.
mab51357
Even though i wouldn’t mind him re-signing, I was pretty surprised he opted out. Seems like it would have been a no-brainer for him to stay. Not sure what he’s thinking obviously. Maybe he wants a longer deal for around the same money. Maybe 3 years at 36-40 million. Wouldn’t be a bad deal from either side IMHO.
Pete'sView
Manaea sucks. So glad he’s gone from the Giants.
andremets
He seems similar to Mike Tompkins, who Mets signed for $1 million.
padam
Snell’s issue is he needs to have a Cy Young year in order to have a good season. He hasn’t cracked 200 innings yet and has only reached double digit wins twice. A top three pitcher in any rotation, but for the amount he may be looking for ($30M+) I don’t see the ROI.
JayRyder
Giants Snell. Make it Happen.
MoneyBallJustWorks
the Jon Heyman approach to reporting… mention the big market teams are in on everyone, but spread it out so that when you realize they aren’t, you can backtrack easily and say they were but aren’t anymore
mab51357
Heyman’s best buddy is the dartboard he uses to predict nothing correct most of the time.
KingSizeBed
Snell (to me) for big money feels like Barry Zito 2.0
Of course, if the Giants sign him, I’d take it.
Isn’t a super huge pothead tho? Idk if I’d give him $180M +
mab51357
I also wouldn’t mind him signing with the Giants. Above average lefty and seems like a good teammate also. That’s pretty important to team chemistry. I also know not many people would agree, but i would also like to see Chapman with the Giants. He would be a defensive upgrade which the Giants desperately need.
Pete'sView
No Chapman. Expensive swing and miss guy. Not even equal to JD Davis offensively and Davis was pretty good with the glove last season (Gold Glove according to many for 2/3 of the season, then dropped off a bit.)
JayRyder
0.9 WAR compared to Chapman @ 4.4
You want Chapman over Davis for sure. That says enough for me.
claude raymond
I’ll add this: If they can’t sign Chapman it says, one, he’s not a fan of Melvin and 2, even though he had years of success in the Bay Area, and lived there, he’s not a fan of coming back. Remember, perceptions are a thing. That’s 2 reasons to perpetuate more perception mongering.
Jean Matrac
No doubt Chapman would be an upgrade over Davis in the short term. But I’m not sure paying Chapman $25M/year through his age 36 season makes him a no-brainer over Davis. The Giants have had to wait for older player’s contracts to expire too often over the past few years for me to be in favor of a commitment like that.
claude raymond
But my point is forget about stats. This might be an issue beyond stats.
Jean Matrac
Not sure about either Snell or Chapman. Both are entering their age 31 seasons. With Snell, it’s going to cost draft picks, and the 7 years as predicted by MLBTR will be unattractive.
As for Chapman, he seems like Evan Longoria 2.0 to me. MLBTR predicted 6/$150M, which would mean paying him about $25M a year through his age 36 season. The upgrade over what they have now seems marginal for the commitment it would take.
mab51357
Zito was paid many millions for just a couple clutch appearances. That was a horrible signing that lingered over the Giants for years. Pretty good teammate though.
Jesse Chavez enthusiast
Snell wouldn’t at all be my first choice either. He’s had Two great seasons no doubt, but every other season he’s been just good or average. He’s had his share of injuries as well, Snell is probably going to end up getting paid for his 2023 season and I’m not convinced that is the pitcher he really is. His walk rate and strand rate are concerning as well.

I wonder what it must be like to be a bandwagon fan of a team like the Dodgers? I assume most of the fans on here who “root” for the Dodgers are not lifelong fans but rather those who can’t handle losing so they only go for the big money teams.

I wonder what it’s like being a fan of a team other than the Dodgers, who spends most of their time thinking about the Dodgers.

“I wonder what it must be like to be a bandwagon fan of a team like the Dodgers?”
I couldn’t tell you. Been a lifelong Dodger fan.
highflyballintorightfield
I don’t like watching high-walk pitchers who have to Houdini their way out of situations they create, so I’m fine with passing on Snell, if that’s what’s really happening. I do wonder if this is Snell’s call–he has pitched very well against the Dodgers since 2020 and might be trying to prove he shouldn’t have been pulled from that game…and can’t do that if he plays for the Dodgers. I’m not a psychiatrist but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Dodgers frequently lit up Manaea with SD and SF so I am hoping he stays in the division.
99socalfrc
I still think the Padres are a legit threat to resign Snell. They let Wacha and Lugo go elsewhere on relatively cheap deals and they have cut massive payroll, Soto, Barlow, Grisham even finding a taker for Carpenter. They can probably swing a 6/150 deal for Snell if that’s where his market ends up, and it feels like they must hsve some kind of spend up their sleeve.
Central Valley
Alonso to the Giants, it makes sense right? RH home run hitter the Giants desperately need.
stymeedone
Maybe next year.
Rsox
Snell’s viral “i got to get mine” rant is probably one of the reasons a true market for him hasn’t materialized. The 5 inning max workload probably isn’t helping either.
I could see Manaea back with the Giants, especially with Bob Melvin there. Kapler piggybacking him to an opener is probably one of the reasons he opted out anyway
SFG.1
I”‘m not a Manaea fan, I’d rather just see Black or Whiten get a go out there for a few months and see how things go. The Giants bring pitchers up and after one bad outing, they send them back the Sacramento. Manaea is who you sign when you can’t find anyone else.
Jean Matrac
Not sure if you mean Winn or Whisenhunt since there is no Whiten that I’m aware of. Young pitching has, for the most part, proven to be very unreliable. Over his first 21 games (94 IP) Logan Webb had an ERA of 5.36, and an ERA+ of 79, 21 points below league average.
Letting your young pitchers figure it out is fine for teams that are planning to be competitive a year or two down the road. But that’s not the Giants. If they do re-sign Manaea I guarantee he’ll have better numbers than Black, Winn, or Whisenhunt.
I’d rather they put the burden on Manaea to eat up innings, and ease the young pitchers in, instead of relying on them to produce.
Dodgerfan34
I love this trade. The Dodgers gave up a number four starter at best and a platoon outfielder for quality starter and a starting OF. Another great trade.
