Jackson Chourio’s impending extension with the Brewers is expected to be made official within the next few days, and the eight-year, $82MM pact will give the 19-year-old Chourio the largest contract ever given to a (non-NPB) player prior to his big league debut. “It’s happened very quick — way quicker than I thought,” Chourio told reporter Andrew Wagner (X link) while the outfielder and agent Cesar Suarez attended a Milwaukee Bucks game yesterday, though Chourio and Suarez both stopped short of confirming an agreement was in place.
“Obviously I’m very happy that the organization believes in me and thinks so highly of me,” Chourio said. “At the same time, there’s been a lot of hard work and now I’m getting rewarded so I want to continue to [work hard] and continue to succeed with the team.”
Regarded as one of baseball’s top prospects, Chourio has looked great during his three pro seasons, though his Triple-A experience consists of only six games. The contract makes it likely but not a guarantee that Chourio will be the Brewers’ starting center fielder on Opening Day, yet even if he does need a bit more seasoning in the minors before making his big league debut, there’s no doubt Chourio is a huge part of Milwaukee’s future.
More from around the NL Central…
- The Pirates’ signing of Ali Sanchez this week added a fourth catcher to the Bucs’ 40-man roster, as Sanchez joins Henry Davis, Endy Rodriguez, and Jason Delay. This seeming surplus makes Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wonder if the Pirates are adding depth in advance of a trade, perhaps even a headline-grabbing move that would see Rodriguez dealt for a controllable young pitcher. Of course, Sanchez’s addition could also mean that the Pirates have again changed their mind about Davis being an option behind the plate, as the former first overall pick played right field almost exclusively during his 2023 rookie season.
- The Reds have so many promising young infielders both in the minors and already on the MLB roster that it remains to be seen how exactly Cincinnati will line up these players around the diamond. Elly De La Cruz has no problem with a potential position change, telling the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Charlie Goldsmith that “wherever the team needs me, that’s where I’m going to play….For me, it doesn’t matter where I play. I just want to play. I’m going to have fun wherever I am. I just want to play as much as possible.” De La Cruz played shortstop and third base during his rookie season, with public defensive metrics favoring his work at the hot corner. Though Edwin Arroyo might end up being the longer-term defensive answer at shortstop, the Reds seem likely to use De La Cruz and Noelvi Marte at third base and shortstop in some fashion in 2024, though Matt McLain could very well figure into the shortstop plans as well if he isn’t at second base (or if Jonathan India isn’t traded).
- Tyler Glasnow and the Cubs were linked in trade rumors earlier this week, and The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma writes that “nothing has changed too much over the past week” and “nothing seemed close to done, certainly not with the Cubs” on the Glasnow front as of yesterday. In terms of what the Rays might want, Sharma believes Tampa Bay is looking for a controllable young pitcher as the headliner in a Glasnow trade package. This might not necessarily be a fit for a Chicago team that is trying to build its young pitching depth, though Glasnow has been on the Cubs’ radar as a trade candidate for a few years.
KingZeke8
If you’re a small market team like the Brewers, if you really thing Chourio is that sure of a thing, you have to take this gamble.
acoss13
It’s a good gamble, Brewers could end up with a star player at a very good price not unlike the Braves and Acuña.
RunDMC
Definitely a good gamble, but there’s A LOT more risk to this deal than ATL/Acuna’s who already had 350 AAA plate appeance and a RoY campaign worth that saw another 487 PA. Chourio has seen only 6 games above AA level (in AAA), while Acuna saw 188 games above AA-level, including 111 in the major leagues in 2018.
Sure, there’s no set amount time at any level, but ATL had a lot more to go on at advanced levels to reduce risk than MIL’s has had, most likely why they gave Acuña more guaranteed dollars 4 years ago.
acoss13
Very true, the lack of Triple A playing time is a factor. I guess the Brewers scouts believe that his fantastic Double A numbers will carry over to Triple A and to the MLB level. Brewers must have seen enough to believe.
Joel P
I don’t really understand this extension. 8 years 8 million is a LOT of money. You get 6 years no matter what and those are maybe 50 million if he’s really really good. So 2 extra years for 30 million? And now you have to call him up on opening day instead of July when you get a free half a year? He probably needs more time at AAA anyways.
I don’t understand this deal from the Brewers perspective.
acoss13
Joel
I guess the Brewers really think Chourio is a legitimate star and the arbitration years would be much more expensive than the overall 80 million dollars they’re giving him. But, yes this is quite a gamble for the Brewers.
JackStrawb
@acoss13 In many leagues, many years, AAA is not tougher than AA.
Consider all the junkballers, rehabbing middle relievers, 32 yo spare parts, and organizational soldiers filling out AAA rosters
Joel P
Juan Soto isn’t a perfect comp because he’s a super 2 but he was about as good as a young player could possibly be. And he made about 50 million in his first 3 arb years and the 3 years prior.
Is he Juan Soto good? I doubt it.
tangerinepony
Hopefully he produces would like to see him work on his On base% he strikes out more than he walks at AA last year 3 months at least in AAA will do him good. Interesting to see what they do with Frelick Mitchell and Weimer 1 of those guys will be traded I would think
Chris Koch
Think about the arbitration scheduling increases 3+ seasons from now. If he’s the stud(and he is GG caliber CF defense with 40/50 growth projection with bat) this is a steal of a deal where he was probably staring at 100+M going through the future Arb raises. Add what if he’s a 5+WAR player in 2024? You think something like this is possible? Again you are looking at GG caliber CF who’s bat profile is sky high. You signed better than Jackie Bradley Jr. Day 1 for 8 urs and 80M with 2 option years to play only in their 20s every season. This isn’t a 25+ yr old signing this deal before starting his career
Chris Koch
He reduced his K pct quite a bit last season. That’s 18-19yr old progression. They also used a tacky baseball to start AA Last season and when it disappeared so did the low 700s OPS he was posting. He’s a shoe in 25/35 with 600PAs this year. Imagine the 40/50 seasons he produces not long after as he grows not only physical maturity, but game experience.
Joel P
When has ANYONE made 100 million through arbitration? I don’t know what raises you are talking about.
5 win player in 2024? I guess that’s possible but that’s a pretty high estimate.
This seems crazy. I don’t see what good this does for the Brewers.
Chris Koch
He’s has RoY potential-likelihood something Brewers would net a 1st rd comp for accomplishing. The deal immediately gives the Brewers reason to start his ML experience opening day vs. 2weeks in or later so they have 6+ seasons of team control. Now they have 8 which is guaranteed 1 FA season bought and paid for. I don’t know if he’ll be 5Win but he’s there defensively. All the additional wins will come from the tiers of offense he accomplishes and PAs if remains healthy through the season.
Joel P
The Cardinals started Walker on opening day at 20 years old. That was a mistake.
I just don’t see the upside here for the Brewers.
Robertguyette
Juan Soto has made $51 million with estimates of $31 more this year. So in his first 6 years he is already at the $82 million. Aaron Judge through his first 8 years has earned $87 million. The gamble for the Brewers is that Churio will have a similar career to that of a Soto or a Judge, and that by gambling now on that allows them to bring him up as opening day starter, in hopes of top 2 ROY draft compensation. And never having to go through the arbitration process that killed their relationship with Burnes, and Prince Fielder before him. As a Brwers fan, I now also know that if I buy a Churio Jersey, he will be with the team long enough for me to consider that $200 investment. I can’t say that about any other player currently on their roster
Robertguyette
One issue with Walker was changing his position on defense, that really hurt his confidence. But this is a very solid point.
I would have preferred to see the Brewers play Mitchell, Frelick, and Weiner next year, with Churio in AAA. But I also believe this is the precursor to a large roster over turn. And this is the Brewers FO way of keeping the pitchforks and torches away.
Joel P
Juan Soto was a super 2 it’s not the same at all.
Aaron Judge was last years MVP.
If the cops are Soto and Judge I think the Brewers should have waited. That’s a very high bar to reach.
Joel P
There are the 2 options years I didn’t realize that when I first replied. But they are for 25 million a year. How many guys make 25 million a year right now?
User 1404051815
Hey, no fair bringing the current Pirates roster and “organizational soldiers” into this thread
Chris Koch
I’d call that a successful batting line at 20 years old Walker ended with. Looks like he’s a trash defender vs GG winner in CF vs corner OF. That batting line has to be 4WAR and higher for Chourio with that many PAs when adjusted for CF. I thought Walker had a strong start, struggled when adjusted to approach, and a final season line where he finished, ought to beaten normal rookie expectations-projections.
Wire to wire 2024
I wonder who the rays would want from cincy
kidbryant
For what?
Wire to wire 2024
Glasnow
Joel P
Phillips?
I don’t see the Reds paying that salary.
JackStrawb
Glasnow at 25m should net at most a 50 FV hitting prospect, and even that is an overpay given Glasnow’s very modest durability.
He’s a 2 WAR pitcher you hope is around by October. No team unsure of making the postseason should deal a serious prospect for him.
Armaments216
Yeah, taking on that salary probably severely limits the prospect return the Reds would offer.
Joel P
That salary probably keep the Reds from having any interest in him whatsoever. Like most teams they don’t want to pay 25 million bucks for a guy who can’t stay healthy.
sportsarerigged
“Don’t see the reds paying that salary “
Their entire payroll is like $60 mill right now. They could afford Ohtani (but they won’t)
They will pay a state north of $20 this off-season. Either trade or sign.
Joel P
If the entire payroll is 60 million right now why spend 25 more on a guy who can’t stay healthy? And the Reds just signed 2 relievers is that factored into the 60 million?
mlb1225
I was afraid of this potential catching logjam would happen when the Pirates took Davis. Ofc, I wasn’t upset the Pirates took Davis. Catching is a hard position, and having two good potential future options is better than having one. Just please don’t deal Endy. He showed off some decent raw power and plate discipline down the line, along with solid defense at the hardest position on the diamond. Delay should be the one to go to Triple-A, DFA, or traded (even though his value as a back-up or semi-regular catcher is relatively thin). The Astros are looking for some catching depth behind Yanier. See if they’d be willing to fork over anything for Delay. But if the Pirates are set on trading either Davis or Rodriguez, I’d rather it be Davis for a big name pitcher.
User 1404051815
Yeah, this is mystifying. They’re in such dire straits for starting pitching—but will be fine by late summer—-and you’re going to trade one of these two?
First off, I agree. How do you peddle Endy? But I go round and round about Davis, too. How?
Then again, to read Dream’s detailed commentary about what went into taking Davis at number 1 and perhaps they don’t feel tied to him as they would a kid they scouted, beat the rest of the field in selecting and put a great deal of time into development
Something’s wrong with the entire Davis scenario. From the actual selection to how they used him in his time here. Has to be more to the story
TheMan 3
I agree with mlb1225, Delay has to be the odd man out. He’s not an offensive threat and his arm strength in attempts to throw out base stealers is a paltry 11%.
I don’t see them trading Davis either, but I could easily be wrong. Cherington said he was going to be very aggressive in signing free agents and making trades and so far he’s been all talk
User 1404051815
Yeah, none of this makes much sense and it’s hard to figure exactly where they plan on being aggressive when you know we’re not talking top level pitchers of 1st basemen
I tend to agree that they plan adopting a wait and see stance—which means another lost season—for when they have a number of starting pitching candidates
See, this is where the idea of rebuild being complete goes off the tracks. You assemble a core and before they can mature, you’re already peddling them?
TheMan 3
I also agree, tiredolddude, it’s day one of the winter meetings and Cherington hasn’t done squat. It a trade was in the works from signing the catcher, it would have been completed today
And while he waits, the decent remaining starters are quickly becoming scarce.
I do believe as you said, it’s another wait and see approach which will undoubtedly result in yet another lost season
I never expected them to sign Ohtani but not trading for or signing even a second tier pitcher seems to be losing any prospect of happening
mlb1225
I give Delay a little bit of leeway this year. With the bases being wider, it’s going to take some catchers to adjust longer than others. It’s now more on the pitcher than ever to prevent stolen bases with the pitch clock and new pickoff rules. Delay can’t catch a guy stealing if the pitcher has already tried two pickoffs, and now is taking a 30 foot lead. Not saying that he’s going to be prime Yadier Molina, but I don’t think he’s 11% caught stealing bad either. He’s a good framer and hasn’t allowed a passed ball yet in the majors. He’s pretty much your prototypical second catcher. Nothing exciting, solid defense, not much bat.
TheMan 3
Not allowing any passed balls or being a good framer aside, this current team needs offense too from its catchers and Delay is by no stretch an offensive threat
But after all BC said he would be very aggressive in the free agent and trade market this winter and I believe him in the same manner as I believed the Steelers were prepared for yesterday’s game
PiratesPundit51
You’re right, trading Endy or Davis doesn’t make much sense, unless (and it’s a big unless) you need trade capital for something remarkable. The Braves are wheeling and dealing; Endy (plus a few other players) might be what it would take to get Smith-Shawver AND Grissom from them.
We want to see trades and action from the Pirates, I suspect they have made tons of calls already and are finding underwhelming returns for our glut of middle infielders or unreasonable asks for guys like Chandler, Jared Jones or Solometo. There’s no doubt in my mind that they talked with Seattle in relation to the players they just moved to the Braves and were either asked to take on too much salary or give up too much from the system. We’ll never know what the ask was, unfortunately.
The Oviedo situation is really what’s taking the rebuild off the tracks. The division may never be weaker than it is in 2024, but the pitching staff won’t really round out until 2025. The trade capital they might have spent to get another arm and a 1B is now solely devoted to getting an arm, because the Pirates never realistically had a chance for guys like Montgomery and you can’t fill your rotation with a bunch of bounce back guys who do nothing to advance building a longer-term winner.
Lastly, I think people are reading too much into the Sanchez signing. The Pirates are really just hedging their bets: if Davis simply cannot catch, you’re an injury to Delay or Endy away from seeing Carter Bins or Grant Koch on the roster. They didn’t have enough depth last season at SP and had to break the glass on Bido, I’m sure they don’t want that at both the catching at SP positions this season.
PiratesPundit51
The supply is low, the demand is high (in terms of decent remaining starters) – I would suggest that hitting the panic button would derail the next decade if the Pirates make a few wrong moves. Imagine having the money to keep Skenes beyond arbitration but having to pay it to Jordan Montgomery as he’s on the 60-day, or worse yet, being Matt Morris 2.0 where he’s so bad that you pay him $10 million to go away.
What happens in response to the Oviedo injury could reverberate for several years, I don’t blame Cherington for exercising caution. It’s not like he’s sitting in the lobby at the meetings playing Candy Crush while everyone else is on the phone; he’s in a pickle and the sellers know it – not unlike the people who sell bottled water for $10 a bottle after a natural disaster. Once the landing spots start to dry up and demand drops, the prices on what’s left will go down to normal, and there still will be some stuff left, even if it’s the meat that’s on special because it expires tomorrow. You buy the $6 Delmonico, cook it that night and pat yourself on the back, IMO.
TheMan 3
Interviewed on the MLB’s Hot Stove program this afternoon, Cherington said that Davis will share catching duties with Endy in 2024 and continues to play right field when Endy is behind the plate.
Rumors have it that BC is interested in pitcher Jack Flaherty
I get what you’re saying about being cautious but there’s no guarantee that Keller will return to pre AS break form next year or the younger players will mature into more than mediocre hitters
IMO, if 2024 shows little sign of improvement, they’ll be back to rebuild mode next off season
YourDreamGM
Mr Mackey and anyone else doesn’t need to wonder anything. It could be and probably most likely they liked Sanchez enough to claim him. A year later they still like him and it took a major league contract to get him this time. That’s it and end of story. Most likely scenario. Could there be something more sure. If not they have until March something to decide what to do. They can option dfa whatever whoever loses the battle for backup catcher.
I have Endy Davis trending towards average or above average players vs all stars. But they have the potential in them. I am fine with either one or both being traded for the right deal. Just a fair trade, doesn’t have to be a fleece or no brainer. Not giving up on them or running them out of town. They just haven’t developed as fast or as well as they could have. Just about minimizing risk.
User 1404051815
Thanks, Dream. That actually makes a lot of sense
TheMan 3
Except that by the time March arrives, the only players available will be has beens and never will be’s or in simple terms, a prototypical Pirate off season
Going with a familiar status quo approach, expect another lost season
rememberthecoop
It seems like the Cubs actually believe they have a chance at signing Ohtani, so they won’t make a big move until he decides. By then, a couple of good pitchers could be off the board, either through trades or free agency. Cubs desperately need a top of the rotation starting pitcher if they’re as serious about winning as everyone keeps saying.
caddition
Do we think Steele is not the TOR the Cubs need? He was in CY Young contention up to the end of the year and seems to be the ace going into next year.
mohoney
They need a high-end replacement for Stroman, unless they bring him back. Even if Stroman comes back, adding another guy pushes Taillon and Hendricks to the 4th and 5th spots. That is a sizable upgrade.
iml12
Stroman was awesome the first half. When he came back from “injury” he was throwing out of the bullpen. Steele is a TOR arm but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have two. Hendricks pitched really well last year, he just feels like a guy that can pitch until he’s 45. Cubs need Tailon to pitch better. Wicks, Assad, wesneski have all have shown flashes. Horton is their best pitching prospect since Prior. Cubs are in good shape with their rotation.
Joel P
The Cubs have needs at basically every spot there is a top end free agent. I would expect them to get one of
Ohtani
Yamamoto
Snell
Montgomery
Bellinger
Chapman
stymeedone
If the Pirates don’t feel Davis is suitable at C, why would another team think so? Especially if the asking price is “a big name pitcher.”
kidbryant
The next team doesn’t have to be looking at him as a catcher.
titanic struggle
I’ve said since last Spring, if the Reds converted EDLC to a CFer MLB could just have the next 10-15 Gold Glove awards pre engraved with his name on them. With his height, bringing balls back over the wall would be a given. With his arm, the number of runners tagging to score or take an extra base would greatly diminish, and the amount of ground he could cover with his speed would be mind boggling!
kidbryant
That assumes he puts in an effort in the field … He’s not known for that.
titanic struggle
Not known for that? Apparently, you’ve never seen him play. Also, this is the first time I’ve EVER heard anyone say that. That’s just laughable..
CardsFan77
So you would put him in CF and guarantee at least 10 consecutive gold gloves because he’s tall and has an arm? I’ll take that bet, what are we betting?
titanic struggle
To begin with, there are three better SS in the organization in McClain, Marte and Arroyo. You’re also forgetting that he’s the fastest man in the world (just ask him, lol). Of course, it’s not a guarantee, and I didn’t say it was. I was trying to make the point that the kid would be unrivaled out there..
CardsFan77
You actually said for the next 10-15 years they should “just engrave his name on the GG award if they were to convert him. 3 prospects that are better @SS doesn’t make him a perennial GG Centerfielder just sayin
ksoze
Geez, do you know what hyperbole is?
titanic struggle
Thanks ksoze..
Biggie22
It’s inarguable he has the TOOLS to be with his combination of size, speed & arm strength although not sure the Reds make this move even though I think they should..
This one belongs to the Reds
I thought they should have converted him to CF in AAA like they did with Hamilton. Hard to do at the big league level.
If he ends up back at Louisville at some point for a refresher on plate discipline, though, it might be an idea.
titanic struggle
It would definitely eliminate the need for a cutoff man… I’m kiddin..
titanic struggle
Biggie22… Hard to say if they would after the Senzel experiment. I do like the fact that he’s open to a position change. That tells me he’s unselfish, and smart enough to see there are better SS than him available. The amount of ground he could cover, combined with a better SS and (?) at the keystone could make for a very strong defense up the middle..
Joel P
With his speed and frame I don’t think he could hold up physically.
Cincyfan85
Maybe RF, but I wouldn’t put him in CF.
This one belongs to the Reds
I’d keep Friedl in CF. RF seems better with the arm.
Marte and McLain are both better shortstops. If he stays in the dirt, he played a better third base in the bigs.
Alan Horn
Agree on all points.
titanic struggle
The only knock I have on Freidl is his arm. Other than that, he played the position very well..
Biggie22
Agree with this so much; it makes so much sin to move him to CF; he’s an athletic freak whose played SS so I do not think the transition would be a big deal…
Bounty Hunters IA
The Cubs future center fielder is already an elite level defensive player, so if anyone has multiple GG in his future it’s PCA and no one else no matter how tall they are.
braddy513
Glasnow and Arozarena to Cincy for
India, Williamson, and Ricardo or Sal
octavian8
Done. We have payroll space for both and it lets TB shed payroll. Maybe enough to make Cincy a serious contender if we weren’t already.
This one belongs to the Reds
They would probably part with Arroyo or Collier in some deal too, push coming to shove, as they have other pre-arb and pre-FA options for a while.
StPeteStingRays
Lol
ShannonL
That would actually be a good trade for us if the rays would do it. Doesn’t fill all our holes but maybe enough to compete. Arozarena is 1st year arb next year same as India.
mp2891
Yeah, but Aroz is an actual good player. India isn’t. This trade would be awful for the Rays. It’s a complete nonstarter.
mp2891
Does anyone on MLBTR understand trade value? This trade package isn’t getting it done, in terms of overall value or specific needs being filled. India for example is not someone the Rays will have any interest in. Zip, Zero, Zilch.
YourDreamGM
Rays value defense. If they can’t make India a plus defender or get his bat to a 800 plus they wouldn’t have much interest in him. Even if they were confident they could they would look to buy low on him.
Annihilus
The Cubs “plans” in free agency:
-Claim to be interested in all top tier free agents.
-Whiff on all.
-Claim you couldn’t sign any mid tier players because your “pursuit” of Ohtani put your “plans” on hold.
-Go basement bargain shopping for the next Bellinger (redemption type player, regardless of position).
-Repeat.
Texas Outlaw
Yes sir. Seems to be their SOP.
vinc3nt3
Sounds like they plagiarized the Red Sox off-season plans lmao. Somewhere Haim Bloom is chuckling.
Joel P
Wouldn’t signing the next Bellinger be a good thing?
rondon
Aww- Homer can’t hide his hater.
jhanley108
The Cubs had a 2 week stretch in July vs COL-PIT that got fans in a lather that they were contenders. Then Sept. came and it was back to reality. 1 600mil player isn’t the answer when you have holes at CF, 3b, 1b and pitching that needs multiple arms.
Joel P
Hoskins, Wacha and Kiermaier wouldn’t be bad either. Yeah perhaps they need depth over a star.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
I wonder how much trade value Henry Davis actually has at this point. He is not even a catcher anymore and hasn’t show much at his first big league cup of coffee.
mlb1225
He’s still relatively young and entered and did very well in the minor leagues last year. I really wish the Pirates had tried him out behind the plate more frequently last season. I’m not saying that he’d be a Gold Glove candidate, but he looked a lot better in the minor leagues in ’23 than in ’22. He went from nine passed balls in his first 370 innings caught to just one in his last 302 innings. If he got his blocking issues down, at least to a fringe-average level, it’s his framing that he needs to work on. Even then, who knows how relevant framing will be in the next three years.
YourDreamGM
Framing will likely be just as important because it’s likely they go with the challenge system. If not it won’t matter at all.
Davis value is all in his bat. Scouts don’t think he can catch. Only person who says he can catch is Cherington yet with all those meaningless innings in meaningless games in a meaningless season he caught 2 or 3 innings or something? I am rooting for him to be a mlb catcher. I don’t know anything about coaching a catcher. Maybe some catcher whisper can work with him and he will be catcher. Any team trading for him is going to offer what he is now. Kelnic potential is all star to mvp. Braves certainly didn’t pay for that potential. Ray’s didn’t pay for Glasnow Meadows Baz potential.
User 1404051815
A trade of either Endy or Davis for a pitcher harkens us back to the Archer trade. You’re going to trade a kid who has just gotten to the bigs and has been heralded for a pitcher—when you need 3 more AND 3 of your surgically repaired starters return mid season AND you have a number of stud pitchers coming through the farm
Why?
To contend for a wild card again?
mlb1225
The Archer trade reeked of desperation at the time. They had an 11 game win streak that year and were doing everything to stay afloat. I don’t think they’ll do that with Davis or Endy this off-season. If you trade Davis or Endy, you have to get a controllable starting pitcher (at least two years, preferably three) with some success in the major leagues.
All I want is the Pirates to walk away from the off-season with some mix of Lugo, Ryu, Wacha, or Manaea from the free agent market, or a few guys from the trade market. Miley is off the table, and he was my #1 target. Nothing big or exciting, but guys who can just get the job done.
User 1404051815
Agree with the pitchers you listed. All would fit as placeholders.
You’re missing my point about the Archer trade—the essence of it. They traded 3 young, highly regarded young players for a middling pitcher
I was here back then and said it lacked common sense and if this is what they are aiming to do with either of these kids—although as you note the circumstances are different—then it’s just as ridiculous.
Sign placeholders. Don’t trade perceived big parts of your rebuild before they’ve had a chance to show something
I hope Mackey just had a few too many schnapps when he wrote that
YourDreamGM
Lorenzen Velasquez Matz Ryu Jack Thor Cookie. Maybe Hill is back if those guys get too expensive. Whoever can’t get more than 1 year or 10 million. Maybe they splurge and get a 2 for 16 or 18.
Someone who wants to get better to get more $ and years next year. Wouldn’t rule out a trade but don’t expect Perez Cease.
Gotta save 10 to 12 million for Cutch and 1b.
mlb1225
No, I know what you’re saying about the Archer trade. I didn’t get the Archer trade either. If you’re going to trade either Endy or Henry, it has to be someone better than Archer, ovbiousy. I’d rather trade neither, if that’s possibe. But if the Pirates are going to trade one or the other, it would have to be for something big, like Logan Gilbert.
MPrck
First or second the last 6 years with a misnomer in 2020. Beautiful always play ball park with great attendance. Now they are adopting the new way to compensate players they like and think will do well. Sends a positive message to the farm system, and also encourages other veterans to stay too. Baseball is changing rapidly, and we’ve yet to see how this will effect older players going forward. However it works out it seems to be the future of building a team going forward.
Joel P
I really can’t see Glasnow going anywhere except the Dodgers. The Dodgers have a surplus of what the Rays need and Glasnow is from California so it could help next year if they want to sign him long term. Glasnow and Buehler gives them 2 top end options and then next year they can keep 1 and let the other go.
cadagan
If the cards are reds don’t look to deal surplus for prospects. Maybe CIN could send IF to STL for OF.
desertbull
Never trade with the Ray. They always get the better of it. Only exception might be Snell to the Padres.
YourDreamGM
They break even and even lose some. The other teams usually don’t lose too bad. If you have someone you can’t develop you trade him to whoever offers the most. Ray’s are just better at player development.

Trade away controllable pitching for one year of a guy who finally topped 120 IP for the first time last year? How about no.

Would have to be a pretty darn good deal to trade Endy or Henry. They showed poorly last year along with most of the other young prospects on the team. I think they’re much better than they showed in 2023.
I’m not sure what they’re looking at but if they trade for a pitcher they better be quality and have at least 3 years of control or a prospect in the top 100 range. Preferably starter but 1B also would work.
I wouldn’t rule out Henry starting in AAA and Delay getting traded. Delay wasn’t an all-star but proved to be a good backup and probably could be a fair starting catcher. Delay won’t bring you a high quality player but could probably get an okay pen arm or a couple of fringe prospects.
