8:53 “Why do the Cubs refuse to meet market value on players?”
Not only did they sign Swanson, as Mark pointed out, but they also signed Seiya Suzuki to almost twice what MLBTR had predicted.
Why are the questions always so dumb?
david – It’s a common belief that Mark kinda prefers easy softball lobbed questions. When he responded about Ohtani’s $700M contract he didn’t even mention that most of it will be deferred, that was a glaring omission.
Also I don’t think the question about White Anglo Saxon Protestants was well-received, I really wish he would just stick to baseball. I like Mark, but sometimes it seems like he’s doing the majority of chats and is kinda burned out from it.
Wait, there was a question about White Anglo Saxon Protestants? I missed that. To the review!
Rob – 8:21
Isn’t white Anglo-Saxon redundant?
Memphis – No, Anglo-Saxon refers to English Ancestry only.
Actually they are German but the point is they are always WHITE. In other words saying White Anglo-Saxon is redundant.
I didn’t see this question either. It must have gotten deleted from the transcript! Censorship!!!
it’s there. It says wasps.
Why do the Reds desperately need OF help? Seems like they have plenty of options.
They could use a right handed bat in the outfield. Obvious they’re looking at Steer but 1 more would be helpful against LH pitching
Would love them to explore a trade with Nationals for Lane Thomas; think he’d be a perfect fit IMO
The guy who said he was a Yankee and Packer fan is probably a Lakers and Bama fan too
The Padres trading Tatis seems about the last thing they would consider now or in the future.
Interestingly he’s been as valuable as Ohtani the hitter during their respective careers despite the descripancy in PA’s in Ohtani’s favor (1000 more PA’s) and the age advantage:
Tatis (age 20-24) 1810 PA (106 HR) .280/.353/.543, 143 OPS+, 19 bWAR (17.4 oWAR)
Ohtani (age 23-28) 2871 PA (171 HR), .274/.366/.556, 148 OPS+, 19.6 bWAR (19.4 oWAR)
Tatis making barely over 100m over the next 5 years. Trading him would likely easily generate that much in revenue loss over the next 5 years. His “big” money years paying him 36m/yr for his age 29-34 seasons (while only counting towards 24m AAV for luxury tax purposes)… I imagine he’ll still be a financial asset at that point as well between his production and popularity.
They outdrew evey team in baseball last year aside from LAD. They are not going to trade away their biggest draw when he’s signed as cheaply as he is through his prime with no dead weight years at the end.
Everyone wants Tatis. I want Tatis. You’re right though, Padres won’t be dealing him.
Go Cubs Go!!
