I don’t know half these questions
FenwayFanatic
I’m under 18. I’m sorry I don’t know my parents income by the number. I just put 0 – 30,000 because that’s how much I make. There was an option for under 18 but no option for anything less than a high school diploma. At least from what I saw.

You don’t know if you follow baseball? Or what age range you’re in?

Always hilarious when people insult their own intelligence when trying to insult the intelligence of others.
Thanks for the laugh

So i can get even more pop-up adds? No thanks

Disappointed the owners of this site would subject us to selling our personal data for their profit.
Tim Dierkes
It’s not your personal data, it’s aggregated. So if 70% of our readers play fantasy baseball, that’s what we’d tell the potential advertiser. Not specifically whether Hudler’s Son does.
Tim Dierkes
If you’re against advertising, and you will not do a paid subscription, I’m not clear on where you think our revenue should come from.
Captain Dunsel
Here’s an idea, Tim. How about offering a premium membership at twice the price. It comes with all the benefits of the regular membership plus the the satisfaction of being able to show true gratitude for all the hard work and dedication you and your staff demonstrate every day.
Americanentropy
well not from selling or using my personal data.
giantsphan12
@Hudler’s, do you not know what the word “aggregated” means??? It’s not your personal data
A'sfaninLondonUK
@hudler
MLBTR will sneak round and steal your prize marrows from the vegetable patch.
So answer “no” to question 17 “Do you like marrows”
Brew’88
Happy (holidays) to do the survey Tim. The ads in mlbtr are not very obtrusive (compared to many similar sites) and dont detract from the content – which is excellent by the way. Thanks for keeping it going!
ba$eba||F@n21
We don’t need a survey or aggregated data to let us know how intelligent hudler’s son is on how sites are able to stay viable and provide value with such open unpaid access
Dorothy_Mantooth
Happy to help, Tim! Survey completed. Thanks for all you do.
drasco036
Do you mean to tell us that you do not invest so much time and energy in this website out of the goodness of your own heart? I personally feel cheated now.
This is the only website I check regularly and as far as the ads go, I actually bought a sweater for my wife off one.
Side note, I’m glad the “Russian singles” are not longer part of the ads.
Fever Pitch Guy
Tim – I think the survey is a great idea, but what is going on with the commenting?
Half of the comments I can’t reply to, not even my own, and it’s not because they muted me as many people I can reply to half their comments. And I certainly didn’t mute myself! Haha!
There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to the comments that can’t be replied, is this a glitch?
Foliovision
Sorry about that @feverpitchguy. The idea was to make it possible at third level comments only to be able to reply to the thread initiator. In practice it didn’t feel right, so we have put back the reply button for every comment. Thanks for the feedback! The overall goal is to make it easier to navigate posts with hundreds of comments.
Fever Pitch Guy
Folio – Thank you for the explanation, I appreciate it!
I’m all for trying out different changes when seeking improvement, but I think it would be helpful to make an announcement when those testing changes are made.
BTW – At the top of my comments wish list is to have a feature that when you reply to a post, your response begins with an auto-generated screen name of the person to whom you are replying. Quite often it’s really difficult trying to decipher to whom a person is responding. Some of us manually type the screen name that we are replying to, however most do not.
And adding Private Messaging capabilities would be awesome, but I know that’s a big ask.
Happy Holidays to you!
Foliovision
@FeverPitchGuy. These improvements weren’t meant to be breaking changes, the effects were stronger than we anticipated on high comment count posts.
Names are shown with every comment “Reply to vtadave” for example just above the reply box. Having every comment start with @name would make comments harder to read and make it seem more like private conversation, but it’s worth thinking about, as it’s definitely a feature which could be automated.
Thanks for the suggestion about private messaging. It’s a big upgrade and not on the immediate horizon but it’s good to know about the interest.
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!
Yanks2
Unrelated Tim but I just found on Baseball Reference that you were drafted by the Mariners in 1998. I never knew you played baseball lol
all in the suit that you wear
Tim: There is a glitch in the comments. It may have something to do with the new collapsing of comments. Many comments do not have a reply option and I have not muted anyone. Thanks.
Fever Pitch Guy
suit – If you ever mute someone, you won’t see their posts or the posts of those who reply to their posts.
Foliovision
Replies to all comments should be back. The idea was for the top level not to allow replies to individual authors but just to the thread initiator. In practice it felt a big awkward so replies to every comment are back. Thanks for the feedback.
ba$eba||F@n21
Give it a rest. No one even asked for your “personal information” if you actually paid attention
Fever Pitch Guy
ba$eball – The craziest part is that if he’s so concerned about hiding his personal information, then why is he voluntarily letting everyone know he’s Rex Hudler’s son?
filihok
RE Tim
Where did HS say either that they were against advertising or would not do a paid subscription?
Not cool to make up lies about your readers.
Or did you just have a failure of logic when reading what they actually wrote?
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Are you as dumb and hyperbolic as your comments would suggest? Just curious. I don’t like muting people, but you are coming close.
filihok
Sid
“Are you as dumb and hyperbolic as your comments would suggest? Just curious. I don’t like muting people, but you are coming close.”
Can you mute the founder? Would that mean you can’t read the articles? Seems weird, especially after paying $30 to for the subscription
But good for you for calling out his unwarranted, and factually incorrect, insult of a reader.
I mean it’s obvious that Hudler’s Son didn’t say they were against advertising or that they wouldn’t pay for a subscription.
Not great form

Someone has to pay the bills.

For the last question, if you watch baseball while you’re in the office, does that count?
SuperSloth
It’s a free site and I enjoy it so if it helps them keep it that way, I don’t see the problem answering a few generic questions.

Good point so I clicked and answered.

I don’t wanna have to pay for crap that’s free to be somewhat organized and set in front of me so yes I will take this survey so u guys can hopefully make a lil more $, just keep it free…..
Mikenmn
The survey is harmless, and if it helps the site, which I look at on a regular basis this time of year, why not? As to getting flooded by potential ads….I’m not exactly in a desired demographic–and it can’t be much worse than getting stuff from insurance companies, hearing aid sellers, glossies for luxury cruises to look at castles on the Rhine, and invites to financial planning seminars where they pitch (I)revocable trusts.
filihok
I’d probably rather see irrelevant adds. That much easier to ignore,
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Done with the survey and glad to help. Great website, great writing, and ad free for a couple bucks a year. Win, win, win.
King Donk of Punchstania
Let’s take the homer glasses off for a second. It’s a decent site but the fact that proofreading is optional keeps it from being great. Dana in the NBA section the other day couldn’t even take the time to get the murder suspects correct name that’s just lazy writing.

Fixed that for you

Hey Filihok guess I’m about as good a writer as the trade rumor folks except the difference is it’s not my day job. Guess I can beg for money too now though.

If it helps get rid of the dumb border-line pornographic ads, Im all for it. Seeing ads for dating korean women after looking at an article about signing a Korean star could almost be considered offensive.

“literally 5 Starbucks trips a year.”
So, infinitely more than I have spent at Starbucks in my entire life?
rct
@filihok: so think of some other silly stuff you spend money on to compare it to. You don’t need to announce that you are anti-Starbucks. I assure you no one cares.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Or whatever occasional indulgence you have. Don’t be so obtuse. You probably pay at least that much for an OF.

Not that I would have any shame in admitting that I did.
Noted, though, that your attempted insult was a complete fabrication, though.

rct
“so think of some other silly stuff you spend money on to compare it to. ”
You mean stuff like subscriptions to sports websites?
“You don’t need to announce that you are anti-Starbucks. I assure you no one cares.”
You, of course, cared enough to comment upon it.
rct
I cared enough to tell you that no one cares. I also don’t care. Don’t get confused here, old timer.
You don’t want to pay, that’s fine. But you also don’t get to complain about the free site.
filihok
RE rct
“@filihok: You are free to stop coming here if you dislike this place so much. I’m also not going to bother reading that novella you wrote. Good luck with all of that.”
Not surprising that ignorant {donkey] has such a high correlation with thinking any text over 144 characters is too much to read

Talking to yourself? Not a great sign.
“You don’t want to pay, that’s fine. But you also don’t get to complain about the free site.”
Ahh..the understander of things has logged on
That’s, uh, not how ot works. If all the people who don’t want to pay leave because the free version of the site becomes unusable for them., the whole site probably goes down since the ad revenue will disappear.
Also, I haven’t paid and I’m perfectly free ro complain. Watch this
The way the site threads replies sucks
The reply function is broken
The hidden replies sucks
The writers don’t seem to actually understand some of the basic financial components of the contracts that they are writing about.
gbs42
What “basic financial components” don’t they seem to understand?
rct
@filihok: You are free to stop coming here if you dislike this place so much. I’m also not going to bother reading that novella you wrote. Good luck with all of that.
King Donk of Punchstania
@gbs because you’re a chump that will pay for info found in other places on the internet isn’t our fault. Hey I have a beachfront in Las Vegas that is just the right price for you what do you say?
gbs42
Donk,
There are member-exclusive articles and chats, and even if there weren’t, this “chump” thinks it’s worth supporting their work so it can continue.
filihok
gbs
“What “basic financial components” don’t they seem to understand?”.
Present value is the big one.
gbs42
filihok,
Considering the multiple times they have explained Ohtani’s 10-year, $700M contractor has an NPV around $460M, I don’t know what you’re referring to.
filihok
gbs
“filihok,

They repeated that, yes
They haven’t shown any actual understanding of it
Obviously, the vast majority of their readership doesn’t understand it. And MLBTR made no real effort to explain it. Presumably because they themselves don’t understand it
gbs42
filihok,
You presume they don’t understand it. And how much effort do they need to make to explain it? Future money is worth less than present money. Most people probably can grasp that concept. Digging into the details and calculations to get from $700M to $460M isn’t really necessary. This is a baseball site, not a financial one.
filihok

An entire article about the contract and the ramifications was written
That article showed no actual understanding of the contract or the finances behind it
Again, it’s clear that the average reader of the site has zero understanding of contact valuation.
To say that this is a baseball site not a financial one is some BS. It’s a site about baseball transactions – and finances plays a huge roll in that. If the site showed a glaring weakness in an understanding of baseball (which…) people would call that out.
This is no different.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Survey done. Thanks Tim for all that you and your staff do. Ignore the whiny non-subscribers, $30 per year is literally 5 Starbucks trips a year.
RandorBierd
The pop-ups and embedded malware are a real turn off from paying for the product.
gbs42
The pop-up ads go away with a membership. Not aware of any malware.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
Goes away when you pay.
RandorBierd
I’m unaware of another reputable site which in this day and age relies upon popups and malware to generate revenue. So you are saying the marketing strategy is to subject the users to bad practices until they submit and begin paying to no longer be treated that way.
gbs42
What malware?
Lots of sites use pop-up ads. The writers don’t work for free.
RandorBierd
Any type of pop-up is a form of malware. It’s designed to steal data, infiltrate your system, or both.
AHH-Rox
I was thinking of getting myself a subscription for Christmas, but noticed the other day that the Mute button still doesn’t work right on the phone app. Having to put up with trolls is worse than seeing ads IMO.
Tim Dierkes
Regarding the Reply button not being available on all comments, we’re working on that.
We did get some reports about weird ads, which is something every publisher deals with. We’re looking at investing in a service that runs a script before the ads to ensure they cannot redirect your browser or anything like that.
Yankee Clipper
Thanks, Tim! It’s also compressing threads for each comment…. Is it supposed to do that now, or is that part of the issue as well?
Thanks again for all your work to keep us apprised of relevant baseball information. Merry Christmas!
C-Daddy
Thanks for all the great content, Tim.
Any idea why the “Blue Jays designate Jonathan Diaz for assignment” article from many months ago still pops up when you first open the app?
Dorothy_Mantooth
@C-Daddy, are you really using the App or are you using a saved bookmark on your phone’s browser?
I have the Trade Rumors App and it works perfectly fine. Maybe try reinstalling it? I used to have a similar issue when using a URL bookmark, but I went back to the MLBTR homepage, re-saved the bookmark and that seemed to do the trick. Save the bookmark before you open any of the articles. Hope that helps!
rct
Tim, will there be an opt-out for the comment compression on threads? It’s obviously not a big deal, but having to click ‘show more comments’ a bunch of times on a thread is a bit annoying. I know some of the comments threads explode with activity, but I don’t mind scrolling through that vs. clicking a bunch of extra times.
Fever Pitch Guy
Rct – I am with you on that, I prefer to scroll rather than the additional clicks.
And while on the subject of comments, any chance the “Go to new comments” feature can get working again? I still see the notification box on the bottom, but clicking it no longer takes me to just the new unread comments.
Foliovision
@rct, many more comments will be visible by default starting tomorrow. You are right, there was too much clicking, especially when revisiting posts for a second time (where only new comments are showing for now). Thanks for the feedback, rct.
In nurse follars
On a certain level these comments show how invested some of you are in this web content forum.
Fever Pitch Guy
Nurse – Ever since the MLBTR IPO I’ve owned 7,000 shares. So yeah I want this place to be successful just like all the other investors here! Haha!
baseballteam
Do the Major League teams take into account our comments when they make transactions or not really?
Rsox
Thats probably a big negative there buddy. Though it would be funny if an executive were to say that they at least read the site
Fever Pitch Guy
Rsox – Even though executives may not read the site, I’m sure at least some of their family, friends and mistresses do.
I know right after I wrote Febles and Bush should be let go, they both were.
I wrote to absolutely not hire Krapler, and they didn’t.
I wrote to hire Breslow instead, and they did.
All coincidence? Doubtful.
In nurse follars
Sure! After reading comments Cashman and i said “the forum has spoken “ and we went all in on Soto!

Happy to do the survey. Day one-ish reader and proud subscriber.

I wonder how many of the commenters bitching about data collection use Alexa or have a cell phone…
Yanks2
Lol yeah Americans are so dumb it’s unbelievable
RandorBierd
The difference is that neither Alexa nor the mobile phone pretend to not be collecting the data.
King Donk of Punchstania
It started with begging for membership every chat and a few post about it now it’s begging for personal info to make a dollar off. I’m expecting the paywall to be up shortly to lock out everyone who isn’t a sucker. This is a rumor site it means OPINIONS, people act like this is the only place online to find transactions, it isn’t. Try googling mlb rumors or transactions or any other term you’re interested in, what do you know 1000 of sites to look at. This is just another sports website let’s not pretend it’s anything more

Your username is vile and upsetting lol
