The Opener: Rangers, Diamondbacks, Offseason

By Darragh McDonald | November 2, 2023 at 7:32am CDT

With the World Series now over, here are three things we’re keeping an eye on around baseball today…

1. Rangers win it all:

The Rangers finally have their first World Series title, defeating the Diamondbacks last night. Now it’s time to celebrate, with a parade already planned for Friday. After that, the attention will turn to the offseason. After being extremely aggressive in recent years, will they take their foot off the gas or continue pressing forward?

2. Diamondbacks Outlook and chat:

It was a great season for the Diamondbacks, who made it all the way to the final showdown on the heels of three straight losing campaigns. How can they build on this year and reload for 2024? MLBTR’s Offseason Outlook series will head to Arizona later today, with a chat to follow at 2:00 pm Central. Click here to ask a question in advance.

3. The offseason begins:

With the 2023 season now in the can, it’s time for the 2023-24 offseason! There will be plenty of rumors, signings and trades, with much attention focused on the most unique free agent of all time. Eligible players can become free agents today but won’t be able to sign with a new club for five days. They can sign with their 2023 club, however, as Joe Jiménez has already done. There’s also a five-day window for decisions on contract options, opt-outs and qualifying offers. Keep checking MLBTR for all the latest!

If Bochy is able to get France into the WBC next time, he is without a doubt the GOAT between all managers in the HOF.

Does anyone know the date by which teams have to integrate players on the 60-day IL onto the 40-man roster?

Does anyone know the date by which Rule 5 draft protectees have to be added to the 40-man roster?

      This was last year—

NOVEMBER 15: The deadline for teams to set their 40-man rosters in advance of the Rule 5 draft. This usually involves adding some prominent minor leaguers onto the 40-man to prevent their selection in the R5, and several clubs might be looking to swing trades to free up 40-man space and ease any possible roster crunch.

      Per MLB.com—

      Nov 14 at 6pm EST

Nov. 14: The deadline for players to accept a qualifying offer is 3 p.m. CT. The deadline to add players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft is 5 p.m. CT.

“Major League Baseball teams must submit their 40-man rosters, called “reserve lists” by November 15 in order to protect players from the Rule 5 draft. Players who have not been added to a 40 man roster and have accrued enough service time since they signed their first professional contract will be eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft”

I’d settle for Texas getting a trophy for the first time instead.

Will Adolis Garcia continue using steroids? Will the Rangers keep spending beyond the $800 million they paid to win this WS title? All valid questions worded more truthfully than the way this article poses them.

Texas was reeling a bit until they ran into Oakland followed by a 4-game domination over the Blue Jays in Toronto mid-September. Rangers gave Canada a glimpse of how dangerous their lineup is.

Coincidentally the Jays handed Arizona a gift trade to catapult the DBacks to the postseason. Without that trade we could have seen two different teams in the World Series. At least one without question.

It’s quite fun to draft 4th to get Mike Trout with an arm (Wyatt Langford) and win the World Series the same year with 5 All Star Game starters that year! All without Wyatt “Super Trout” Langford and deGrom!

Great year for the Rangers, that is for sure. Not sure if I would be setting myself up to consider a prospect better than the greatest player of this generation… but he is a darn good one.

Spending 60m next year on Degrom & Scherzer is a bit of an obstacle, but probably not the end all.

      Congratulations Bochy!!

Oh yeah. I’m just referring to the Vanderbilt coach saying he is the college version of Mike Trout and MLB Network setting him up with a Trout comp.
