With the offseason ramping up, here are three things we’re monitoring heading into the weekend…
1. Parade in Arlington:
The first World Series title in Rangers’ history will be celebrated with a parade taking place today in Arlington. It’s set to kick off at 12:15 pm Central time, but local reporting indicates that some fans started lining up last night. If you’re planning on heading down, don’t delay.
2. Mets’ managerial vacancy:
Reporting from yesterday indicates that the Mets are narrowing the field in their managerial search with a hire perhaps being made soon. Craig Counsell, Carlos Mendoza and Mark Kotsay are thought to still be in the running at this point. Could the club have a new skipper by the time Monday rolls around?
3. Free agent pool growing:
The pool of available free agents grew by huge numbers yesterday as players and clubs began making decisions on contract options and opt-outs. Outfielder Jorge Soler, infielder/outfielder Whit Merrifield and right-hander Seth Lugo were some of the bigger names to hit the open market, but there were dozens of others. November 6 is the deadline for these decisions and for qualifying offers, with plenty of choices still to be made in the coming days.

Id be interested in what A’s fans think of Kotsay’s managerial style, I know he hasn’t been the chief for long there and was handed a rebuilding team, but what of his decisions and how he worked with what he had?

I think the problem of measuring him by what he had, is that he didn’t have much at all. Every team has a young star or two that’s going to be the bright spot, especially when nobody else is shining.
So it’s hard to measure on that. They’d have to more really measure on lineup management, bullpen management, and things like that.

That was more of what I meant to ask. Though I’m sure it takes more time to develop a real managerial style, I still wonder what their fans thought of him. Counsell is considered one of the best managers in the game by many, and I have a hard time seeing him leaving Milwaukee considering his ties, especially for a team in transition. Though I guess money talks.
This one belongs to the Reds
The Mets manager search is probably the most overhyped thing on here.

I was going to short Commercial Real Estate Investment Trusts, but the Phillies didn’t win it all, so no recession (this year)

Well Genevieve and I shorted 5 million shares of American Diversified Funds Portfolio Option Investment Company of American Offshore Holdings and Market Cap Growth Emerging Markets to pay off my ARM loans and we figured we might take some of those realistic dollars and mosey on down to this parade nonsense to check out what is going down.

Excellent move, Hemlock. It won’t happen, but I wish the Red Sox would take out a LEG loan to pay Ohtani

I would short some put options on a put option for a swaption interest rate swap in exchange for a credit default swap and some futures on steel.

deGrom – I’ve been saying for a month now, put everything you’ve got in Roku. Can’t go wrong.

Bizz – Sox need to trade Story this offseason, with the SS free agent market so weak it shouldn’t be a problem finding a sucker …. err, POBO willing to take on all of Story’s salary. They need to do it NOW before he shows the world how much he sucks offensively in a full season.
That should be more than enough to sign Ohtani, or better yet Yamamoto. Then play Rafaela at shortstop until Mayer arrives.

Genevieve and I really enjoy the Church & Dwight stock. That’s Arm & Hammer for you commoners.
We bought Persephone a diamond-covered tricycle for her third birthday on our comprehensive dividend cheques alone! I managed to acquire an emerald hammer with my cheque this year. I attempted to repurpose a nail with the hammer but it shattered into two million pieces! The luck of it all, hmph. Thankfully it was insured with Sachs, Heinrich, Gutter, & Sons on 115th Avenue. You know that place, yes. Sparkling day for a parade! We’re off in a jiffy, toodles!

Personally, I believe Stearns has wanted Counsell all along and is just interviewing others to make it look good. Counsell is either trying to get the Brewers to pay up or else he’s going to New York. I would be shocked if he’s managing anywhere else next season.
acoss13
That’s probably what’s happening. Like you said is doing interviews with others just to not make it seem so on the nose. At first I didn’t think Counsell would leave the Brewers, but now I’m doubting myself.

“ There are only six managers in the game who are scheduled to earn at least $3 million in 2024, led by Padres manager Bob Melvin’s $4 million salaries, according to USA TODAY’s research: Bochy, Melvin, Buck Showalter (fired), Dave Martinez, Roberts and Alex Cora.”
Torre made 7.25 million fifteen years ago. My understanding is that Counsell feels it’s his responsibility to reset the market for managers, so he’s going to go where he is paid the most. That is most likely the Mets, but he should be looking for something closer to $6 million a year.

In Chicago there are Whit to the White Sox rumblings but I don’t know why he would want to

Counsell is the top candidates and will get the job. The problem with the Mets is the media birrage. I’m not sure most managers or players want to deal with them. Every move will be scrutinized. The Mets have a lot of work to do to put a better team on the field than the Braves and Phillies.

Championship parades are made for drunk athlete moments. The more intoxicated the better. You can go viral by the time you get home if you’re lucky.

And since it is Texas shooting guns upward. They don’t care where those bullets fall. Hopefully right back at them!

Scrutiny is fine. It’s being able to keep up with your rhetoric with the media without saying the wrong things which can be spun by them. Joe Torre was and Aaron Boone is very good at that. Same for Dave Roberts and Tito. Joe Girardi not so much. It’s not a skill necessary to be a good manager but it certainly helps in big markets to protect your own players.

Mets to hire manager on Monday to be fired on Tuesday. No one is lining up for that dumpster fire.
