The Padres interviewed former Angels manager Phil Nevin yesterday, report Dennis Lin and Britt Ghiroli of the Athletic (X link). San Diego continues to search for Bob Melvin’s replacement in the dugout.
Nevin managed a season and a half in Anaheim. He took over on an interim basis when the Angels dismissed Joe Maddon in June 2022. The Halos signed Nevin to a one-year extension at the beginning of last offseason. After a second consecutive 73-89 finish, the Angels declined an option to retain him for 2024. They tabbed Ron Washington as their new skipper yesterday.
In addition to that managerial stint in Orange County, Nevin has a long track record as a coach. He spent a year as the third base coach for the Giants, held the same position with the Yankees for five seasons, and was the Halos’ third base coach before replacing Maddon. The Fullerton product has plenty of ties to the San Diego organization. He played for the Padres between 1999-2005, twice securing down-ballot MVP votes during that run.
While Nevin’s interview indicates he’s a legitimate candidate for the San Diego job, he may be behind a pair of internal options. Bench coach Ryan Flaherty and senior advisor Mike Shildt interviewed early in the process. Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote this evening that Shildt is the favorite for the position.

Guy had Ohtani and Trout and couldn’t win. How’s he winning in San Diego with the underperforming and overpaid players?
VegasSDfan
Trout spends 3/4 of the year injured. Ohtani is amazing, but he had TJ surgery. The Angels team wasn’t that good beyond two players.
Murphy NFLD
Agreed its also not basketball or hockey were 2 elite players cam win you 55% + of your games and at the very least sneak into the playoffs
padam
Hockey needs more than two.

The last place Edmonton Oilers would like a word

No hall of fame manager could have gotten that team a winning record. Trout was out half the season, the bullpen was garbage and half the squad is AAA. That being said I felt he could have done a better job managing the bullpen

Bochy probably could have, but besides that nobody

Bochy is below 0.500 for his career. His exceptional talent is getting a good team to go all the way not getting a bad team into the post-season.
Not a clever name
I love Bochy, and am a life long Giants fan but outside of the catcher, starting rotation and the closer, the Giants really were not what I would call good teams during their runs. That’s what made them so special. They were good enough and played consistently, but there were no position players besides Posey that jumped out on any of those teams as the guy any other teams fans would have been excited about their team acquiring. Belt was always overrated and would watch three borderline strikes happily in a clutch situation, Crawford had a few good years but was never a superstar like some of the shortstops around the league during his time, longitivtiy has always been his strength. 3b has been a panorama of has beens and won’t be’s since Matt Williams, 2b the same since Matt Kent. We stole an outfield from the Mets that turned out excellent defense and clutch hitting but it was only clutch because they didn’t hit at all for the first 7 innings of almost every game. So I would say Bochy’s talent is getting the most out of the team he has either good or bad, and the result reflects the team he is given as it should.
Not a clever name
No such thing as a lame duck job. It’s a solid pay check for a few months to a year and a audition for a real opportunity.
SportsFan0000
Bochy’s record should have an asterick for the many years he spent toiling on losing teams with the Padres.
They finally “broke through” with some playoffs teams, an NL Championship and a Word Series appearance with Bochy near the end of his run in San Diego..
Like Joe Torre, Bochy had many losing years that were not his fault, since the Padres had such a long run of bad, losing teams.
It does not, obviously, reflect Bochy’s skill as a Manager.
And, it toughened Bochy up to get more results from less talent. And, it taught Bochy how to get his players to “play together” and , oftentimes, “over their heads” and “over their talent levels” on some of Bochy’s managed teams
BOTH IN SAN DIEGO AND IN SAN FRANCISCO.
Some of those Giants teams were playing over their talent levels.
(no offense to Giants fans).
Bochy did a masterful job of managing them.
They upset, in some cases, teams that had better talent and rosters with Hall of Fame players on it.
Beating a Tigers team in the World Series with a young Verlander and a young Cabrera (both 1st ballot Hall of Famers)
and their star studded roster was a shocking upset and great managing by Bochy.
Bochy is, undoubtedly, a 1st Ballot Hall of Famer!

Finally broke through near the end of his run?
In his 12 years in SD he led them to 4 division titles (96, 98, 2005, 2006). The WS trip happened in 1998 not at the end of his SD tenure in SD but near the beginning.

Melvin had Machado, Tatis, Bogearts, Soto, Kim, and Snell and stunk the joint up.
99socalfrc
He also had Cronenworth, Grisham, Nola and (god help him) Carpenter in the lineup…..
Deadguy
James midway stunk the joint up smoking the good weed? Or ditch weed? There’s a difference… obviously Melvin needs to fire his supplier to? Wrong products to make successful baseball club? Try some of the 1980’s Mets magic? Turned Keith Hernandez and Darryl Starwberry into Cocaine Champions covered in sticky sweet glistening champagne?
James Midway
Ironic that the hippy is asking if I’m smoking. Melvin can’t work a bullpen and when the team struggled, what did he do? Nothing
SportsFan0000
Melvin has won 3 or more Manager of the Year Awards.
So, I suspect that Melvin’s problems in San Diego had much to do with poor roster construction(Preller) and the toxic relationship Preller and Melvin had
(probably arguing about roster construction).
The team did not have the best chemistry and discipline.
The Front Office tried to manage the team and do Melvin’s job.
Melvin balked and resisted that.
Those tensions appeared to carry over to the locker room and clubhouse.
Brew’88
Melvin also managed the BP late in games like he was on cocaine..
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
He actually had the Angels playing hard and well
Their bullpen sucked apples
That was not Nevins fault
SportsFan0000
Schildt (sp) has a better track record from St.Louis

Silly take, Old York.

Gotta love it! A.J. Prellers newest push pin manager?
Think the GM might be the problem… dude needs serious anti anxiety medication, or need to lay of the cocaine not sure which? I mean coffee sorry… didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers
GarryHarris
Even if Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and the Manager and Coaches were at the top of their games for all 162 games, the Angels might play .500. The roster is mostly not very good.
HalosHeavenJJ
Players seemed to really like him. Team was too bad to really be able to evaluate him fully but he did make a handful of the dumbest bullpen moves I’ve seen.
chalk73
And he loved to play Velasquez for some reason.
Reynaldo
Only the white players liked him, i.e Trout.
Jimbo_Jones
Pass. Thx.

Preller still looking for the right yes man. Like everything else this manager search has turned into a circus. Peter Seidler is a clown for letting this carry on….
good vibes only
Phil Nevin couldn’t manage his way out of a wet paper bag

They’ve gotta be kidding. They’d be better with Madden
LATrolleyDodger
Hate to break it to you, but Madden passed away in 2021
mlb fan
I’m pretty sure he’s referring to Joe Maddon, the very much alive baseball Mgr, not John Madden, the football announcer that passed away in ’21.
Harry Scout
No I’m pretty sure he meant Steve Madden, an American fashion designer and businessman. He is the founder and former chief executive officer of Steven Madden, Ltd., a publicly traded company. He was forced to resign as an executive following a conviction for financial crimes, so in that regard I highly doubt he would be in consideration…not to mention his overall lack of big league experience. Though AJ does like to make a splash.
LATrolleyDodger
Ahhh yes, Steve Madden. Padres might need some new cleats
sergefunction
Trolley was close enough to right. Jason DE Maddon passed away in 2021, that’s definitely who he meant, and just like Casey Stengel said ya kin look it up.

Since it was known that Preller and Melvin really didn’t like or work well together, they should already had a new manager on speed dial or a “break glass if Mgr needed” situation.

LAME DUCK JOB
Whoever is desperate enough to take that job is getting fired as soon as AJ’s replacement finishes his introductory presser.

My picks
Manager – Shildt
Associate Manager – Benji Gil
Bench Coach – Ryan Flaherty
3B Coach – Phil Nevin
1B Coach – Gil if not Associate Manager or Bench Coach
Hitting Coach – Eric Chavez
Pitching Coach – Ruben Niebla
Harry Scout
I love it. But with Gil as manager. Schildt guiding as assistant.
Reynaldo
Gil is not playing second fiddle to the same white guy again.
Tom the ray fan
Preller can’t coach as well?
JoeBrady
If it helps, Tito likes the dude, so there is always promise. But I still think Stildt is a better option.
bravesfan
Their gm needs to get out of the way, otherwise I think every coach is destined to fail
DanUgglasRing
This would be hilarious
SportsFan0000
Whoever the Padres hire, the Manager is going to have to manage
AJ Preller and keep him away from the players and the locker room.
Mike Shildt would be the best bet for the Padres at this time.
Successful track record with the Cardinals.
Hired by Preller to be the “Manager in Waiting”.
Schildt has spent the last 2+ years working with AJ Preller.
Schildt and Preller get along and work together well.
Schildt had the respect of players, fans, clubhouse, locker room in St Louis.
Preller should not :”overthink” or over analyze this decision
or it could come back to bite him and the Padres in their backsides.
