For the past year, the big question for the Orioles is whether they’ll add a high-end starting pitcher. While Kyle Bradish and Grayson Rodriguez took steps forward in 2023 (during the second half of the season in the latter’s case), there’s clearly still room for another pitcher who can slot into the upper half of the rotation.
O’s general manager Mike Elias acknowledged as much during the GM Meetings a few weeks ago. Baltimore has done virtually nothing in free agency during Elias’ five-year tenure. They’re still yet to sign a free agent to a multi-year contract. Much of that has been amidst a rebuild, so there’s a possibility for Elias and his front office to be more aggressive.
To that end, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported this morning that the O’s had shown interest in Aaron Nola during his free agency. There’s no indication that Baltimore ever put forth a formal offer before Nola returned to the Phillies on a seven-year, $172MM contract. The right-hander was obviously going to require a commitment well into nine figures, so the O’s being involved at all hints at some willingness to pursue a notable free agent strike.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell should land more significant contracts than the one that Nola received. Jordan Montgomery, Eduardo Rodriguez and NPB star Shota Imanaga are among the next tier of free agent starters. Rich Dubroff of Baltimore Baseball wrote yesterday that Yamamoto — whom MLBTR predicts for a nine-year, $225MM contract — is likely to be out of Baltimore’s comfort zone financially.
Free agency is only one means of bringing in pitching talent. There are a few notable names who could be available on the trade market. It’s hard to envision the Rays moving Tyler Glasnow within the AL East, but each of Dylan Cease and Corbin Burnes have also been floated as candidates. Dubroff suggests the O’s have interest in both hurlers — no surprise given their talent and the team’s desire for a rotation upgrade.
Baltimore still has a top-tier farm system despite the prospect graduations of Rodriguez and Rookie of the Year winner Gunnar Henderson. It’s safe to assume that duo and top shortstop prospect Jackson Holliday are off the table in talks. Players like Jordan Westburg, Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo are among numerous younger talents whom Elias and his staff could make available if they pursued a trade for a high-end starter (particularly one like Cease, who has two seasons of remaining arbitration control).
Also on the docket for the Orioles this winter: finding clarity on their lease agreement with the Maryland Stadium Authority. The franchise announced in late September that they had agreed to a 30-year lease extension at Camden Yards. One day later, the Baltimore Sun reported that it was instead a non-binding memorandum of understanding. That agreement would provide the Orioles long-term development rights around the stadium but did not represent an official extension of the lease.
With the current lease expiring on December 31, the Sun’s Jeff Barker reports that the state and the team are considering decoupling the lease from the development rights to facilitate getting a binding lease in place within the next five weeks. As Barker points out, the legislative hurdles to be cleared are lower for the lease agreement itself than for the accompanying development plans. Tabling those discussions (even temporarily) could get an official lease extension in place to firmly put to rest any questions about the O’s future in Baltimore. In 2019, owner John Angelos pledged the organization will remain in the city “as long as Fort McHenry is watching over the harbor.”

After watching last season the Os seem like an ace away from having a great shot at winning it all. Baffling to me they haven’t gone harder for a SP yet.
Joel P
Yeah I am puzzled by their lack of ability to spend, whether that be prospects in a trade or salary. The window is now its not a rebuilding team anymore. Time to make some moves and act like a legit contender.
Ranger Danger19
They didn’t hit good pitching. They need to find the next gear past 162 because it’s magic.
DolphLundgren
I’m giving Elias some slack here. Man’s been good on his word so far, never deviated from the plan, he deserves a little breathing room to find a solid #2 guy. Maybe everyone who’s come a-knockin’ has wanted Jackson Holliday (pls god let us hold onto him)?
Joel P
The Orioles have loads of prospects not named Jackson Holliday.
Or just write a check. That’s definitely an option.
DarkSide830
The should just write a check with where their payroll is. Whole darn team is arb or pre-arb.
Joel P
I agree but they do have prospects, more than they have positions for.
One or the other. Just do something Orioles!
willpatten
I think investing $25-30 million in a pitcher over many years is insanity.
ba$eba||F@n21
In all honesty, they could do both. They could package some talent and get a Cease or Burns AND they could pony up and pay for a Snell or Yamamoto. With the farm system they have and only so many positions with multiple players who play those positions, something has to give. Combine that with the extremely low payroll, even after arb raises, and they can also afford to add a TOR arm at 25-30/yr. It’s been proven time and time again that you can never have enough pitching, so even with adding two potential frontline starters to the rotation options they currently have, it obviously only makes them all the better. Would they do both, fairly unlikely, but CAN they/do they have the ability, absolutely they do
BrianStrowman9
The Arizona Diamondbacks just made the WS with one of the ugliest rotations in baseball. Their #3 starter was a prospect who was really bad in the reg season and completely flipped.
The Rangers big move of Jacob DeGrom netted them nothing this year. Max Scherzer wasn’t anywhere close to their biggest contributor in October this year either. It was Nathan Eovaldi & Jordan Montgomery that were the biggest contributors. Neither of those is a classic “ace”
That’s how it shakes out sometimes. The Brewers should’ve never been knocked out in the first round by the “you need an ace” logic because they have 2.
I hope we add a front end pitcher to the squad. Id love to pair Burnes with G-Rod and follow it up with Bradish. I think there’s a real chance we see signs of G-Rod developing into that “ace” this year. But I think people miss what happens in reality at times.
Dcole_1019
Difference is DBacks have an ace in Gallen and the O’s don’t
Pls Stop
If you look at Kyle Bradish’s stats from this year, you’ll find that he was on the same level as Gallen.
Dcole_1019
Probably true but Gallen has more years of Ace production. This was Kyle Bradish’s first year of above average production. Let’s see if he can keep it up and prove it wasn’t a fluky year
BrianStrowman9
Gallen was not an ace in the postseason at all.
kripes-brewers
Yeah, I think the Os line up with the Crew for Burnes here. Relatively low cost for a year and hopefully you get a chance to make an offer for the longer term if it works out for both sides. It’ll cost a few prospects, but those prospects are generally lottery tickets – you never know if they’ll end up AAAA players and rarely do they end up superstars. Hopefully my Crew can snag a few that stick around a few years and make a good showing. Williams would sure look good there with the air bender in a setup role too…
BrianStrowman9
I like the Burnes idea. Milwaukee could use a SS to replace Adames (if moved) & after 2024. They need a 2B also. We could line up pretty well with their choice of Ortiz/Norby/Westy. I could see Ortiz & Norby if the Crew wanted that to be their next MIF
Murphy NFLD
You know there whole payroll was under 30m this past year they could easily fit in a top pitchers salary doesnt matter if its for 1,3,5,7 or 10 years they cam pay 30m per season for a true number 1
CleaverGreene
Prospect hoarding and cheap/greedy owner.
C Yards Jeff
Somethings up. Elias knows he needs a TOR type. Hands tied? The owner, John Angelos, has a long term plan he is following? Pretty sure his Mom wants to sell and her advisors/consultants are solely focused on getting franchise in tip top shape financially. Sans the back half of this article talking about the stadium lease and greater area around the OPACY?
Goin' to Sheetz
It’s just a matter of how quickly Angelos sells once the lease is signed. I hope it happens as soon as possible.
Then Elias can actually improve upon the team.
The Big Yo
Keep the prospects please. I’m an A’s fan and I’m very aware of how rebuilds can seem. A lot of luck and a lot of good coaching an mentor ship. Keep this crew together and if the O’s can manage to build a unit type mentality then they have the makings of a dynasty. Just because you CAN trade doesn’t mean that ya have to
BrianStrowman9
We can’t keep all the prospects. I’m a big fan of hanging onto the majority but there’s some clearly blocked ones.
Joey Ortiz should already be getting an everyday shot at SS somewhere. That’ll never happen here. I’d dangle Cowser as a chip as well.
The Big Yo
PS Nola gets 3 years in my book. Don’t care who ya are or how much money ya have. Pitchers are a pitch away from a lengthy spell on the free money bench. It’s madness to me. Eg Ohtani for 10 years is hilarious to me and for the money everyone is taking it’s so silly. Granted the jersey sales pay for themselves but, again, another Tommy J and he’s yesterdays news my friends. Go get yourselves 5 other very good players instead
aragon
What the heck is ‘ya’?

Your not wrong
BrianStrowman9
You don’t think the Nats are getting good value for Stras and Corbin’s $70MM tab this year?!?
Crash_n_burn
Flags fly forever. Still worth it for the Nats.
BrianStrowman9
No flags went up after stras’ extension.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
So many storylines, so little time
Orioles need to step up and sign a big time free agent pitcher
End of story

In 2019, owner John Angelos pledged the organization will remain in the city “as long as Fort McHenry is watching over the harbor.”
That’s good thinking. You never know when the British will invade from Chesapeake Bay again.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s the Canadians I’m worried about.
Rishi
Why is it that Blake Snell “should receive a higher offer than Nola”? He is streaky and usually doesn’t pitch the whole year. Idk man. It’s not a given. Some teams will be desperate for a potential ace tho.
BrianStrowman9
I’d take Nola. I really want a horse for those kinds of dollars. Snell is going to get a lot though.
Simm
Snell is the better pitcher. He just doesn’t go as deep. In the playoffs when pens are used a lot a 5-6 inning guy who is nasty like snell is worth more then a solid innings eater type.
misterb71
Snell and Nola are both up-and-down pitchers with a high floor. They can blow you away one season then be little more than league average the next year. It depends on what you’re looking for in a pitcher as to which one is better. If you want the potential for flashy, overpowering stuff then Snell is your guy. If you want an innings eater who will occasionally make hitters look powerless then Nola is your man.
RobM
Was 2023 peak Orioles for this current group? Obviously, it shouldn’t be as they should be at the beginning of a nice run, but windows sometimes close quickly if a team doesn’t react to fill gaps and show a willingness to trade prospect capital to go for the kill. It will be interesting to see how the Orioles react here. Could go either way. Look how quickly the White Sox run at the top ended. One season. Mistakes can compile quickly.
Joel P
Exactly
BrianStrowman9
How does this window close quickly?
Gunnar, Bradish, G-Rod, Adley are under control for a long time. Jackson Holliday and about 5 other guys are coming. Some will bust or be dealt but this is about as wide open of a window as you’ll find in the AL.
The White Sox organization is and always was a mess. That was a team of out of position sluggers that lacked discipline and never stressed fundamentals. Elias and Sig Mejdal are 2 of the best around. This is a disciplined team that plays defense, runs the bases way, and develops its own talent.
O'sSayCanYouSee
Did the White Sox win 101 games? Did they win 101 games in the hardest division in MLB?
Apples, meet Oranges.
AceKing
These dudes are good.
Sharks
Apparently it’s not enough to just own a baseball team any more. You need to own an entire district. These guys could care less about their 3rd starter. It’s all about commercial and residential around the stadium.
bus035
The Mariners and Orioles seemed primed to make a trade. Young starting pitching for young starting hitting.
HBan22
Agreed. They match up very well for a trade. It’d take quite a haul to get Logan Gilbert, but if one team has the pieces to do it, it’s Baltimore.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
O’s should have made a big push for Sonny Gray. The money, and the years (3), were fair. Not enamored with Snell, save for the fact that he had some previous success in the AL East.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Trading for Corbin Burne would be a boon for both clubs. Brewers have a nice bunch of young OF prospects, but hardly any INF prospects waiting to step in and play this year.
It’s match made in heaven and I’m hoping Ellis can pull it off.
Trade for Burne and then sign a less expensive FA starting pitcher. Should be ready for prime time then.
Geoff Jenkins
I know Holliday is deemed untouchable but what if they got controllable pitching from the Crew? Burnes seems to want to test FA, do Peralta and Williams get Holliday? Multiple years of control and still allows O’s to spend for more pitching or extend Adley.
O'sSayCanYouSee
I think your thought process is right, as far as what deal it would take to get Jackson Holliday.
The Orioles should entertain such thoughts, but I think the value of Jackson Holliday might only find a deal in South Florida; Miami’s Perez, and one of their other starting 5 SP. Maybe Dodgers for Bobby Miller and another arm…that sorta thing. Seattle could offer a 2/3 SP/SP prospects that would fit too
But really, I don’t think Jackson is going anywhere…he’s the first overall pick in the draft…has any team moved a 1/1 before they reach the majors?
ctbronx7
John Angelos is hardly the beacon of honesty. He still wants that real estate development deal and could easily just sign year to year leases until he gets his way with lawmakers. ?
gr81t2
Please, no more filler articles about the orioles having “shown interest” in a big name free agent. Just let us know where they make an offer. That would be news.
Chris from NJ
As a Met fan I can really sympathize with O’s fans because the Angelos are alike like the Wilpons. Maybe without the Madoff stuff but here the O’s are standing at the door of contention and they won’t go out and get the ace they need. Nor have they locked up any of that young talent. I’m worried for Baltimore. They are going to piss away something special.
Magnoiabuck
Cease and CF Roberts to O’s for Mullins, Ortiz, Kremer and Cowser. Who says no ?
Dcole_1019
I kinda like that trade for both sides
O'sSayCanYouSee
Orioles say no.
Orioles don’t need Roberts…would rather keep Cedric than flip him for Roberts. Besides, RHH dies in Camden Yards now.
Could see Ortiz, Kremer, Westberg. (Cowser being a the 5th overall pick in the draft, I think Mike Elias sees him as more valuable than his present value seems to be.)
Bruin1012
O’s that would be crazy return for Cease and the White Sox would that deal in a blink of the eye. Baltimore needs pitching so I can’t see them including Kremer. I can see the White Sox and Orioles hooking up on Cease deal but it won’t cost that much.
Just Rob
Isn’t Roberts a malcontent? Elias seems to go for character guys. Besides that, as much as I love Mullins D, I don’t think Chicago wants to trade controllable / affordable Roberts for Mullins as part of a rebuild (I understand this isn’t a 1 for 1 proposal – I just think it gets paired down to Kremer plus prospects for cease.).
Question is whether Cease’s value has decreased because of last year? I like the idea of getting one of Seattle’s young guns, but that’s going to cost Westburg, Mayo and Cowser / Norby / Ortiz. I don’t think O’s can substitute Urias filler there.
BrianStrowman9
It’s Luis Robert, I assume.
He’s got the potential to be better than Mullins. O’s should take that deal. He’s under team control much longer on a reasonable extension at that.
Not sure why the WS would have any interest in swapping him & Mullins.
shosho
Adley should be spending at least 50 games at 1b and dh this year. They need to use some of those seemingly blocked prospects to protect their franchise catcher. I genuinely don’t understand why mlb teams still don’t have a long term plan for young catchers who can hit.
BrianStrowman9
Adley DH’s a lot. At this point the O’s probably aren’t too concerned about years 10&11 of Adley’s career. I doubt they’ll be in Baltimore.
shosho
You’re not wrong. It’s a big part of why I stopped caring about sports. No one cares about the players or the fans. Why help adley be a 20 year player when you can just use him up and let him go? Why do anything but the bare minimum when no matter what you’re still a pro team with a tv deal and revenue sharing? Thanks for coming to my ted talk. I have free pamphlets for anyone who wants one.
Magnoiabuck
O’s need to lock up Adley and Gunnar now. 250MM each backloaded for about 10-11 years. Next year GRod if he shines in 24. Fans will fill Camden every game like in the 90’s. Hire extra security if warranted for night games. Oriole Magic is back and fans got taste of a winner again.
