Would it be that insulting to JD if the Dodgers extended him the Qualifying Offer with the understanding that they would immediately shop him (and he’d have to waive his NTC) if they landed Ohtani? It’s a $20 million payday he isn’t likely to get anywhere else. He’s on 1 to 2 year deals until he stops hitting, anyway

Sign and trades used to be a very regular thing, specifically in the NBA. Good question as to why the practice was never really adopted in baseball?

Sign and trades are not allowed in baseball. There is a grace period once you sign a player where they cannot be traded.
In an instance like Martinez, he is a free agent, so it will be a new contract (if they have him a QO and he accepted) so he wouldn’t be allowed to be traded until June 15th.
Flip side, if a player opts in to a contract where they is a player option, he can be traded. Same if a team holds a team option on a player, they can pick up that option and trade the player.

“It should also be noted players who accept the qualifying can not be traded without their consent until next June 15”
The Dodgers tell him they’re not giving him a qualifying offer unless he waives his NTC if they acquire Ohtani. It’s $20 million he wouldn’t get anywhere else. The Dodgers have Plan B in house already without having to scramble for another bat if they miss on Shohei

It’s funny to see the hilarious packages people on the internet are proposing in a Soto trade. First off Preller isn’t trading Soto. The package would have to be stupid good and would have to help the team right now. These proposals saying we will give you a couple of prospects and fringe 40-man players for your best hitter are a good chuckle. He won’t move unless they are out of the race at the deadline.

Most hilarious trade packages are influenced by REAL LIFE hilarious trade packages. For every proposal you think is a joke; there is likely a real life counterpart

Ben Soto had a pretty good year out of Philadelphia’s ‘pen. The left handedness is cool, too

Excited to see the heads exploding about Zaidi
Fortunately, those heads will be mostly empty

How about a trade where the Mets get Soto & Pads get Alonso? Both are 2024 FA’s, both are stars, both fill needs on each team
vtadave
Soto>>Alonso, but maybe a framework for a larger deal? Doubtful though.

The Mets are not going to trade alonso. Write that down in stone. Twice if you have to.

Agree. Too savvy a move for the Mets.
