Major League Baseball announced the Gold Glove winners tonight, as selected by a group of managers, coaches, and statistical analysis. Twenty-five percent of the selection total was determined by SABR’s Defensive Index metrics, while the other 75 percent was determined by votes from all 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team. Of the latter pool, managers and coaches were limited to voting on players in their own league, and they weren’t allowed to vote for any players on their own team. The utility Gold Glove wasn’t determined with any votes, but rather via a defensive formula calculated by SABR and Rawlings.

What a defensive season for rookie Bailey.
TheBull
Yeah , he led the league in Errors. And only played 3/4 of the season. That’s clearly hard to do
TigersLoveCinnamon
Yeah, nothing to do with him being fatigued. He’s clearly unbelievably talented defensively
Balk
Gold glove finalist speaks for itself. Haters gonna hate
richardc
Idk enough about Bailey’s defense to say one way or the other, but there are several other players that are on this list that really weren’t that great defensively.
Also, I’m probably biased, but the fact that Michael Harris didn’t win the GG is absolutely absurd. Dude did nothing but make highlight play after highlight play all year long, and made difficult plays look routine.
Maybe the kid from Colorado was just that much better, let’s be honest, he plays for the Rockies, so idk how his season went, but I find it really difficult to imagine anyone playing a better CF than what I watched Harris play.
Maybe I’m wrong, and if so, that dude must just be the second coming of Andruw Jones or something, idk..
GarryHarris
Michael Harris II is a good defensive CF and not winning the Gold Glove award doesn’t change that. However, the most obvious choice in all MLB was CF where Colorado rookie Brenton Doyle was the winner.. He’s that good.
In the AL, Cleveland’s LF Steven Kwan is the only other obvious choice for Gold Glove winner.
The winners aren’t as subjective to opinions and writers whims as they once were but, they still have that element. When I evaluate, I remove the league, team, age and name. This is My List:
C ARI Gabriel Moreno
1B LAD Freddie Freeman
2B CLE Andres Gimenez
3B PIT Ke’Bryan Hayes
SS COL Ezequiel Tovar
LF CLE Steven Kwan
CF COL Brenton Doyle
RF WSN Lane Thomas
SP WSN Patrick Corbin
Simm
Yeah so was Juan Soto last year.
Fever Pitch Guy
Balk – Agreed, and I’m outraged Devers didn’t win a GG!
oscar gamble
Patrick Corbin? How do you come up with a guy as the GG winner for both leagues who wasn’t even a finalist in his own league?
Balk
Let’s see you do it.
TigersLoveCinnamon
Huh?
Ban Jacob Nix. He knew Lindsey Hill was lying.
I’m not paid to do it
Balk
I’m sure there’s a reason for that! Hahaha
DarkSide830
Bull doesn’t play catcher better then Bailey, but Gabby Moreno does. Open and shut book.
Balk
For this year….
Kruk's Beer League
Kinda odd that Mountcastle was nominated for this tbh. He’s not horrible, but he’s far from excellent at first.
Braves Butt-Head
Eddie Rosario being nominated is more astounding.
Basically if you can just you probably can win the GG in NL LF if you can tie your shoes and walk chew gum at the same time.
Benjamin101677
With Rosario i think have a past history of being able to place their outfielders into spots to make more plays. I remember when Nick Markakis won a gold glove for for right field he wasn’t that great.
solaris602
Yeah, when I saw Rosario’s name it made me think how far the bar has been lowered. He’s never been known for his defense…..at least not Gold Glove caliber
richardc
Yeah, Rosario was insane lol, but his defense was pretty good this year tbh.
Now, with that being said, it was LARGELY due to the fact he has Michael Harris playing next to him. Rosario really only had to go for balls hit to him in a short range, and he did do fairly well.
Even so, I would NEVER even consider Rosario for a GG award..lol That’s honestly just laughable.
They should have just given it to three outfielders, because Michael Harris DEFINITELY deserved a GG for his play in the field this year. That young man is a defensive wizard in CF, he gets excellent jumps, takes perfect routes, and plays balls at the wall with the very best of the best.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Yeah Ian happ from defensive liability to gg
Kruk's Beer League
I feel like this is a couple of those old head voting scenarios where a good hitter at the spot also got the additional hardware. Palmeiro, Jeter, Abreu all come to mind as scenarios like that.
I’m thankful the voting has at least gotten better. I think Bill James and the Fielding Bible have a lot to do with that.
Badtakesonly
Glad to see Dubon got a gold glove, he worked hard this year and played great defense both in center and 2nd, his bat also showed significant improvement since he joined the Astros. Nice work by Nathaniel Lowe as well, went from one of the worst last year to one of the best. Gotta appreciate that hard work paying off.
TigersLoveCinnamon
Glad to see dubon succeed, wish it was with the giants
dirtbagfreitas
Dubon didn’t win.
gravel
He did for Utility.
mlb fan
Ha Seong Kim got robbed. To my eye, he’s the best fielding middle IF in the game. A gold, if not a platinum glove level SS/2B.
guilderc
Robbed of what? He won a GG..
willyb
Nico Hoerner got it…. and deserved it
mlb fan
Every time I watched the Pads Kim was playing SS. When he didn’t win at SS I did sort of jump the gun because I didn’t know he won at 2b. Anyways, he was the best fielding SS I saw last year and I do watch a lot of MLB, although admittedly my viewing is spread over several teams, not just one home team.
drasco036
You based your opinion on at most 17 games? Because you said yourself, every time you watched Kim play, he was at SS. Kim played 153 innings at short which equates to 17 games.
Nico had 12 DRS to Kim’s 10 and 14 OAA to Kim’s 7. You may watch a lot of MLB but you don’t know what you’re talking about.
And for shortstop, Swanson led the entire the league regardless of position.
Dumpster Divin Theo
17 games is a lot. Maybe he has the shortstop package.
Kruk's Beer League
Kim won the GG for utility.
GMoney28
Bailey shoulda won the Platinum and he gets snubbed for the Gold, wow
VermonsterSD
Lol…. No, he didn’t get robbed of anything. He wasn’t even the best catcher, let alone all around Defense to win a platinum. Tatis will win that, hes twice the player.
GMoney28
+17 OAA was 2nd in the league and he didn’t debut til late May
DarkSide830
You don’t get concessions for playing less games.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Maybe when he tries to deliver baby like posey he’ll get his due
YankeesBleacherCreature
Holy shiet – Volpe!
luckyh
I really didn’t see it. He seemed average at best in the games I watched. Good for him though.
LostYankeeinexile
I know right??!! I was surprised as well here. I mean.. the kid’s not bad … but Gold Glove???
YankeesBleacherCreature
Voting is skewed towards the eye test but still impressive for a rookie who barely played in AAA.
Dumpster Divin Theo
But but- he’s a Yankee. Jeter ARod and Papi prolly said something nice about him on Fox guffaw fest during the Yankees 87th consecutive appearance on national broadcasts so that sealed it.
stymeedone
Giving the GG to an undeserving Yankees SS is kinda the tradition. I would also take Seager’s bat anyday, but him getting a finalist nod over Baez, among others, is ridiculous. Ok
YankeesBleacherCreature
What does bat have anything to do with a fielding award? Have you checked the stats of winners above?
GarryHarris
It was a down year for defensive SS in the AL.. Once Wander Franco was suspended, Anthony Volpe deserved the award in the AL.
Bruin1012
Easily the deserving winner of gold glove shortstop when Franco went down plays in small market KC he was easily better then Volpe and it’s a joke that Volpe won it over him.
Bruin1012
No like most people you went right over maybe the best including Franco. It’s amazing how playing in KC makes a difference he was easily the best non Franco AL short stop and it was close between them.
Manfred Rob's Earth Band
Is that right? When was the last time it went to an undeserving Yankees SS?
Dumpster Divin Theo
They could change the name from Gold Glove to the annual undeserving Yankee ss award if that makes you feel better
Pads Fans
Franco was the best defensive SS in the Al, but they couldn’t give it to him because of his off field issues. Volpe was 2nd or 3rd best so he got it.
rmullig2
He had twice as many defensive runs saved than anybody else in the American League. He was the clear winner.
steveb-2
I’m glad he won, a great achievement. However I think he’s the second baseman of the future, with Peraza at SS.
Assuming- Peraza figures out MLB pitching, AND either or both aren’t traded away.
Frankly, this off-season I’m more concerned about a knee-jerk reaction to the 2023 season than anything.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Dude just helped your team all year get a ring. Enjoy being the defending champs!
Drew Waters Bat
Michael Harris II losing to Brenton Doyle is a joke.
Benjamin101677
Michael Harris was injured on disabled list and then wore a brace for a while. Don’t think his first half stats are all that good. He only got healthy late in the second half of season
James Midway
Didn’t Doyle throw a ball 105 MPH from the outfield? That’s nuts.
solaris602
Gotta throw the Rockies a bone, I guess
mlb1225
Doyle was lowkey insane defensively this year. +19 DRS, +16 OAA, 24 UZR/150, 100th percentile of fielding run value, 1 error, 10 assists. He was in the 99th percentile in all of Baseball Savant’s defensive metrics.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Doyle was Loki the Norse god of mischief ?
hiflew
Says the person that probably never saw Brenton Doyle play a single game in 2023.
KamKid
The fact that Brenton Doyle was so undeniable defensively that he won a popularity contest over the other candidates speaks volumes. Probably a lot of undeserving winners, but Doyle isn’t one of them.
BrianStrowman9
Funny because Doyle will probably be nothing more than a D replacement on a decent ball club despite that insane D.
Badtakesonly
Man you really don’t like Semien huh? He’s a pretty good leadoff hitter and I seem to recall him having some good plays against the stros in the ALCS in some big spots. That all being said, your team did pay him quite a lot more than I thought he might have deserved. Dude is set for life though, can’t fault him for that.
YankeesBleacherCreature
$26MM for a 7.4 bWAR second baseman who played 162 games. 20+ teams would take that in a heartbeat
User 3180623956
Disliking a player because your team decided to give him a boatload of money, deserved or not, but a a bit childish. No?
Cincyfan85
Who cares if the whole team is overpaid? You won a World Series. None of that matters now.
unpaidobserver
Yeah overpaid definitely a thing only if you dont win WS.
Pads Fans
Semien was one of the most UNDERPAID veteran players in baseball this season. 7.4 WAR for his $26 million salary is an incredible amount of surplus value. More than $40 million in SURPLUS value.
Among veteran players with 6 plus years of service time only Betts was more of a bargain for his team.
Roll
should we point out the irony that Semien has been worth more to the Rangers than Seager both last season and the season before while being paid almost 25% less Seager yet is overpaid. What does this make Seager and why is it in their name? Wonder if there is some confusion here.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Lol. Even if you don’t like WAR as a component to evaluate talent, your argument is still full or personal biases and flawed logic.
Roll
so what your saying by this logic Degrom who will only pitch what 6 games over two years is not overpaid and is worth every penny because if he played full seasons he could be a shoe in cy young candidate. So the rangers top target for pitching is James Paxton long term deal 20 -25 mil a year for 6-7 years sound about right?
By this same logic, Ernie Clement with the Blue Jays last season would have been a top player to go after and even better can play multiple positions. a 144 OPS+ with almost 900 OPS. with only 50 PA and a 1 WAR he would have been worth what 8 WAA?. Are you sending multiple top prospects for him?
Also your stats of the at bats between 1st and 2nd would on average be less than 20 difference. The average count of plate appearances per game for 1st spot is 4.04 and 2nd is 3.97. so not sure where your 20% number comes from unless you counting games played in there as well where the last 3 years Semien has averages over 160 and Seagar averages 110. What if Semien was out 3 of those games this year and it cost them 3 wins .. the rangers would be looking up at the playoffs instead of winning the world series. Also how do you know in those games missed Seager would have been on a cold streak and all those numbers fall in line to his career averages or prior season numbers when he played most of that season? Which are still very good but not his 2023 numbers.
Macbeth
Glad Hayes got it this year. Deserved it last year honestly.
Rsox
At least Chapman has one positive for him heading into free agency

Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
If he was just a better player overall, he could get it. Definition of someone who is a good player all around but just doesn’t eclipse great in even one category.
KingKen
If the award were given out based on defense he should have won. He had better defensive numbers across the board than Garcia, but Garcia had the better offensive season and for whatever reason that still remains a factor in the GG voting.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
With all these crazy and asinine rules, I wouldn’t be surprised if Manfred assigns the DH position a gold glove in the coming years.
guilderc
Or just give out one gold glove to a single player in each league. Have to speed up the ceremony so other fans stay interested!
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I think it’s stupid how the gold glove always goes to offensively minded players whose team has made the playoffs.
mlb1225
That sadly happens a lot, but I feel it happens less often than it used to. I mean Brenton Doyle took home the award and played with a 103 loss Rockies team with an OPS below .600.
PutPeteinthehall
Three NL GG went to Cubs players. Not a playoff team and the players that won were not near the top in any of the offensive categories.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
True, I just see the big names.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Cora Andrelton Simmons and Kevin Kiermaier both have four GGs.
richardc
In his prime, Andrelton Simmons was absolutely the best defensive SS I’ve ever seen..
The fact most teams wanted to draft him as a Pitcher is still crazy to me, but it isn’t that surprising considering he also had an absolute cannon!!
Most teams also wanting to draft Austin Riley and Michael Harris as pitchers also baffles me, especially Michael Harris.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I started following baseball during Ozzie’s mid-career and I’d have to agree with Simmons.
GarryHarris
Colorado has a few good defenders. Rookies SS Ezequiel Tovar and OF Nolan Jones are excellent defenders to go along with 3B Ryan McMahon and C Elias Diaz.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Funny you mention Andrelton Simmons, because he won gold gloves on two of his most offensively minded seasons (2017 and 2018). Just pointing that out.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Yup correlation between offensive up years and gg awards is maddening. Like Kiermaier winning again because he’s not battling the Mendoza line despite fading defense
Hebner3B
Hayes should have won it last year as well although the bat matters too.
Hopefully he’s got a few more GGs in his future.
richardc
The bat is solely for Silver Slugger consideration, it shouldn’t factor at all in who wins a GG.
Although, that’s not to say there hasn’t been some years where some undeserving sluggers were gifted GGs.
Grumpofm
You’re right it “shouldn’t”, but I think some of the coaches use it anyway. Kind of as a tie breaker, for players with similar stats.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Which renders the award meaningless when coaches can’t discern defensive value and reward guys based on reputation or offense as a crutch . See Jeter, D
Grumpofm
Just human nature. If the difference is real close, like Hayes and Arenado last year for example. You’re taking the better all around player, at least last season. It’s either that, or you have to, using a boxing analogy, have to knock out the champion.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Curiously the All star game has evolved away from the tie goes to the champion mentality which used to be the case back in the day when it was largely a popularity contest and you’d see the same boring Steve Garvey mugs (8 consecutive all stars, 4 GG) year after year. Now you see an abundance of first timers each year which while perhaps overly prone to small sample size theater, at least mixes it up some. So bring on the Bailey, Doyles, and Kims. We hardly know you.
Grumpofm
I use ops in all-star voting. Even though I have no idea what a good ops is, because I have no idea how to figure out slugging percentage. I don’t think fan voting should be a factor, instead it seems to be the biggest factor. I like good defense but readily admit it’s a non-factor in most people’s opinions, including my own.
James Midway
So glad to see Kim get some love. Dude is a wizard in the infield.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Dude is good all around and goes unnoticed I feel. 17 homeruns and 38 stolen bases… insane
richardc
Yeah, this was the first year I really got to see him play more than just a couple games, and I definitely came away very impressed.
Kim is just a really good, all-around player that’s SEVERELY underrated. I’m not so sure that’ll be the case anymore with the season he had.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
He was underrated before this year, just also not as good, bit his WAR last year was through the charts
Dumpster Divin Theo
Didn’t see much Pods on TV (yeah regional baseball, late night). And the Pods didn’t come into town until the very last season of the series. LFGMets (Metsin7) #InEpplerIsGone!!!!
These gold glove awards are just awful. As much as I don’t like Lindor, he was easily the best shortstop in all of baseball this year and it wasn’t even close. As far as Volpe goes, he played a lot but he seemed pretty average in my opinion. I don’t watch many AL teams play so I can’t say who was better than him, no one really stood out to me but I’d probably give it to Correa. I’m not a fan of GG for outfielders. It makes no sense why each outfield position gets their own GG, it should be the top 3 fielders in the outfield (aka 3 Center Fielders). Ha-Seong Kim should of been the GG for second base. I was really surprised Tommy Edman didn’t get win for utility, he would have been my go to for that position for GG. No idea how Mountcastle lost to Heim, that was a straight up robbery

Some love to the 3 Dbacks finalists, of whom 2 won Gold Gloves and the other should have!
Christian Walker’s repeat was an absolute runaway win. Someone mentioned that this award just goes to guys that pass the eye test. That is definitely Not true of Walker. He passes both the eye test and the defensive numbers test.
Gabby Moreno absolutely slammed the door on other team’s running games by throwing out even the best base stealers.
Alek Thomas should have won NL CF Gold Glove! The guy made highlight reel catches on virtually a nightly basis, and was the core of the “No Fly” defense the Dbacks OF of Thomas, Carroll, Gurriel and McCarthy.

Reliable and reproducible defensive metrics have been unbelievably difficult to produce. So many of the various metrics have relied on the biases of humans to make judgments. Now, with the ability to track all players and the position of the ball, the defensive metric may be the single most accurate measurement in baseball (if properly implemented. ) MLB calls it Outs Above Average. However, some players with great range and yet they may not look as good as the fielder who lunges for the ball at the last minute.
With those caveats in mind, here are the OAA for the GG winners and the player with the OAA at that position. In some cases, one could argue for the non-top OAA player. But in others, no way.

Looks to me Happ & Volpe shouldn’t have even won a Participation Trophy, much less a Burger King Crown.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Thank you for this. Even the eye test would tell you that Ian Happ was a defensive liability out there, riding on his reputation (he started out well initially as a CF) and his multi positional flexibility. It soon became apparent that he has flexibility because he doesn’t handle any position particularly well. The -7 OAA is clearly empirical evidence of that, not to mention all the balls that would ping pong off him but weren’t called errors. Hate to make him the poster child of this because he’s a sensitive dude who sounds like he’s gonna cry in his radio appearances and brews great coffee ( he should get a food network gig ) but potential trades have broken down because of his defensive question marks.
Dumpster Divin Theo
You know who else had a strong arm? Sammy Sosa. Sammy! Sammy! Gold glove! Gold glove!
LaBellaVita
It is true that Happ led the NL LFs in assists with 12. But Gurriel had 8 in fewer games. And he had range and far more reliability.
The GG selection is getting better. However, there are still problems.
Yanks2
Uh, what? Volpe, everytime I watched Yankee games, would miss routine ground balls or he’d bobble the ball like a minor leaguer. How is he even considered good, nevertheless a GG???
gww4488
The Gold Glove awards may be the biggest joke of any award in all of sports, and even the entertainment world. I first realized this when Bobby Abreu won a GG while playing for the Phillies. He had made 0 errors and had a decent amount of assists, but he was terrible as far as range goes, and anyone who watched him play on a daily basis,(or close to it), gave him grief about his defensive efforts, and running jokes were him being allergic to the wall and the RF line.
In any event, there are so many poor selections each year, and I’ll start with two Phillies who were wronged, 1) Bryson Stott is/was the best defensive 2B this season, and is better than Nico.2) Zack Wheeler is a great defensive SP, but he has a minimum of 2( Ranger Suarez and Taijuan Walker and maybe even 4- Nola and Sanchez) better defensive SPs on his own team.
Dumpster Divin Theo
The Gold Glove like the Gold Globe, voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press?

He started 135 games behind the plate and calls a great game for all of his pitchers, keeps base runners honest, with his league best pop time, and great arm, and for him to only have 2 Gold Glove Awards in his career is preposterous! In his 5 seasons with the Phillies, he’s caught 145 ,47(of 60), 139, 132, & 135 games and has been a stellar defensive C, offensive C, and baserunner. And that doesn’t include his years with Miami.
DarkSide830
Nah, Realmuto had a poor season by his standards and was practically lapped by Moreno in CS%. I think Moreno won it going away.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Realmuto is traditionally the gold standard but the way the Snakes (normally a slow slithering reptile known more for deceptively quick reflexes after lulling you into a fall sense) ran roughshod over him, not so sure. Realmuto played more like fakemuto

Good to see Hayes finally hit well enough this season to unseat Arrenado.
Last year The Fielding Bible gave their award to Arrenado even though Hayes beat him out using the defensive value system invented by The Fielding Bible.
Gold Glove awards are about as logically driven as HOF selections these days.

Was the vote before the post season? 5 out of winners where from the 2 WS teams.
quonset point
and that’s how you get to the World Series, with good defense.
ohyeadam
Yes, all award voting happens before the playoffs

Volpe? You’ve got to be kidding….
That Baseball Fan
Swanson made 3 or 4 critical errors the last week of the Cubs’ folded season. I thought that might sway some voters away from him. He’d probably agree with me how bad he was that week when it counted.

All these people poking **** at Rosario. I know it’s from 2021, but the guy is a solid defender. Yes, sometimes he did have some poor reads on balls that landed in front of him, that’s life.
He is what he is.

What type of horrible take is this? Semien was an ironman, defensive stalwart, and all star leadoff hitter for the World Series champions. There is absolutely nothing objective on which to base your claim of overrated.

As someone who watched every Astros game this season, Dubon shouldn’t even sniff a gold glove. I’m really not sure how they hand these things out??? Rotated between 2B and CF and he did an admirable job filling in for Altuve at 2nd when he was hurt. BUT in CF Dubon was a HUGE liability. Didn’t take good routes to the ball, anytime he got near the wall he was scared and missed balls that were sure outs. He did a great job filling in, but he is the worst CF I have ever watched, so I have not one clue how he won a gold glove??? Just taints the entire thing in my opinion when you give out an award for defense to the worst defender in all of baseball in CF.

I still hate the Varsho trade but it doesnt make sense he doesnt win a GG or Fielding Bible award when he has better defensive stats than the winners?
Dumpster Divin Theo
Yeah why the GG award is bizarre for rewarding players more renowned for hitting. Marcus has improved since his early days as a defensive sieve fo sho but should never be regarded as the very best

Does anybody here know how to sort Fielding Run Value by position on Baseball Savant or anywhere else where it’s housed? I can isolate OAA by position but can only find Fielding Run Value as a total of all defensive positions on the season.

Jay’s trade Gabby to keep what they perceive to be a better defensive catcher in Jansen… how’d that work out?! Horrible trade for the Jay’s already!
Digdugler
It was a horrible trade but it had nothing to do with Jansen (other than the fact they had 3 catchers). It had to do with their obsession with Varsho and that they would pay any cost for him.

What is a Brenton Doyle and why did they give him a charity gold glove?
Dumpster Divin Theo
Brenton Doyle. Wasn’t he the lesser known Murray in Caddyshack, fated to a career of disappointment and obscurity like other lesser knowns- your Clint Howard’s and Beau Bridges?
YourDreamGM
Brenton Doyle screams tiktok super influencer.

Vlad won a GG at 1st too and he is awful there.
Whyme
Varsho didn’t win a gg while having 29 DRS lol what a joke the gg is
