The Brewers are adding Rickie Weeks to the major league coaching staff, as first reported by Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. A coaching position is opening with the reported promotion of bench coach Pat Murphy to manager.
It isn’t clear if Weeks will receive Murphy’s old title. Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that the 41-year-old is taking on responsibilities that would traditionally fall to the bench coach, however.
Whatever the specific role, it’ll be the first MLB coaching gig for the longtime second baseman. The #2 overall pick of the 2003 draft, Weeks played in the big leagues for nearly a decade and a half. Eleven seasons came in Milwaukee, where he made an All-Star Game in 2011. Weeks hit .249/.347/.424 as a member of the Brew Crew. He later suited up with the Mariners, Diamondbacks and Rays before finishing his playing days in 2017.
Weeks returned to his original organization in February 2022 — this time as a player development assistant. He clearly impressed in that role, as he lands an MLB coaching job two seasons later. Weeks was floated as a candidate for the managerial job between Craig Counsell’s departure and the agreement to hire Murphy. It isn’t known if he received a formal interview for that position.
Promoting Weeks directly to manager would have been a bit of a surprise given his limited coaching experience (although the Guardians tabbed Stephen Vogt just one year removed from his retirement as a player). Working on Murphy’s staff could position Weeks well for managerial opportunities down the line. In the interim, he’ll be back in the dugout at American Family Field.
Straight to MLB Bench Coach? Pretty impressive.
Wasn’t Ricky Weeks one of the unsound players of the Brewers ugly play era of good all or nothing hitters who couldn’t play defense or fundamentals, but they did make the playoffs once by trading their whole farm system for 1 1/4 years of Greinke, Marcum. Actually they made it twice, I forgot 2008 trading 6 years of Brantley for 6 weeks of CC Sabithia to be 1 and done in playoffs, is the most brilliant trade of all time and gave sheepish Brewer fans one of the their best franchise glory moments of all time to make the playoffs with no chance to advance.
I can’t imagine taking time out my day to write something this obtuse
Or stupid
Brantley was actually the PTBL.. LaPorta was the “big” piece.
Actually I had friends who went to packers games with Mike Maddox, the list of players was conditional on Brewers making the playoffs, there were people in the organization, that were hoping the Brewers didnt make the playoff because Brantley was exposed, I remember being told way back then that they knew Brantley was the most talented guy
You lost me at “Actually I had friends”… obviously that can’t be true.
What a troll. Who do think you are? I am sure I have more friends than you do. I was telling the truth about my friend Bob Marshall who was went to the Packer game with Mike Maddox. You can troll that all you want little guy.
I guess when your team never makes a bad trade, even in hindsight, and wins it all every year, you can rip on those who fall short.
So congratulations to you and whatever tavern league team you proudly represent as their assistant water boy.
The Brewers are one of the most futile sports teams in history. They made one world series, and 1 strike shortened playoff season in first 38 years, ugly. Now with watered down playoffs they made the playoffs, and not much else ,the fans think they are a dominate team. What did they ever win?
Gonna need examples of all these fans saying they’re a “dominate” (it’s “dominant” btw) team because I don’t recall seeing that from anyone, like ever.
Yes, that Ricky Weeks.
AKA, Rickie Weeks.
Why did it take them Weeks to announce this move!?
Because he went from Ricky Spanish to Rickie Weeks.
I remember this guy and his brother Jemile
Hopefully he’ll be better at coaching than he was at listening to coaches.
Them that can’t do teach
Those that can’t do right, umpire.
I love me some Rickie Weeks! From 2006-2012 he was an OBP god. I dig the addition to the coaching staff for the crew.
All the best to Rickie and the promo. Interesting off season for the Brewers so far. What will come next?
Great thing is many Brewers fans were not big fans of Rickie but now it seems on social media he is welcomed home with open arms. He can become a second Counsell type beloved once Murphy has another heart episode under the stress of managing. Now we just need to bring back Ed Sedar and the team will be complete and ready to win.
For me, Weeks playing career was just disappointing. He had maybe 2 really good years and hampered with injuries. Open arms? Well, I wish him the best. I hope is a better coach than a player.
Are they adding him this Weeks or next Weeks?
For the Brewers, finding an addition to their coaching staff took WEEKS !!
Actually given the title “associate manager” instead of bench coach, which suggests that Murphy may be a transitional figure while Rickie develops.
