5:10pm: The A’s have now officially announced their signing of Bido.
3:45pm: The Athletics and right-hander Osvaldo Bido are in agreement on a major league deal, reports Robert Murray of FanSided.
Bido, now 28, took an unusual path to the majors. He was signed by the Pirates as an amateur out of the Dominican Republic at the age of 21, while many amateurs sign when they are 16. Despite the late start, he climbed up the ladder and was called up to the majors in 2023, making his big league debut at the age of 27.
He appeared in 16 games for the Pirates, including nine starts, tossing 50 2/3 innings with a 5.86 earned run average. His 20.3% strikeout rate and 8.9% walk rate were both close to league average, but a low strand rate of 62.5% may have pushed some extra runs across, which is why his FIP was 4.10 and his SIERA 4.63. The righty also threw 62 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level this year with a 4.16 ERA there. The Bucs non-tendered him last week, sending him directly to free agency without exposing him to waivers.
Though Bido didn’t dominate in the bigs, there were some encouraging signs. Per Statcast, his 4.4% barrel rate was quite good, placing him in the 92nd percentile. His average exit velocity and hard hit rate were also better than the median. He still has a couple of options and less than a year of service time, so the A’s can utilize him as a depth piece with roster flexibility going forward.
The A’s need pitching help about as much as any club, having posted a collective 5.48 ERA in 2023, besting only the Rockies and their 5.68 mark in that department. Since the A’s play in a pitcher-friendly setting and the Rockies the opposite, that points to Oakland having the worst pitching staff in the majors in the most recent season. FanGraphs credited Colorado’s staff with a collective 5.9 wins above replacement on the year but pegged the A’s at just 1.7.

Huh? Well, ok… Go A’s…

I’m still optimistic that the Vegas plan will blow up in Fisher’s face. Excellent article on CBS site illustrating just how ludicrous the plan – if you can call it a plan – and how ridiculous the back of an envelope revenue projections are…
And the mlb sick making site – alongside the Athletic – have puff pieces…

Can’t say I’m familiar with him..

Athletics out here making moves. They’re not good moves or moves that make a bit of a difference, but they are by technical definition, moves.
case
All our moves are currently tied up in lobbyists. We desperately need your tax dollars! Revenue sharing just isn’t enough to cover Osvaldo’s salary.
The Big Yo
I like the little moves my A’s are making. By law of averages some of these guys surely most work out to some degree. Ya can’t get much worse than the first half of last year. HISTORICALLY BAD.
Now this is just me but if I had a hand or a say in anything I’d get together all of our off season pickups and promotions and send them off to a pre season pre season. Bond them and make it an “us against the world” type mentality. Catchers, pitchers, hitters the lot. Couldn’t do any harm I’d imagine

Now we’re talking!

I know him, I even named my dog after him. Oh wait, the dog’s name was Fido, nevermind.
mlb1225
Bido should probably only be used in long relief. He would go through a line-up once, then struggle if he was asked to do it a second time.
mlb1225
Though I guess with the A’s current situation, they don’t have much to lose by trying him out as a starter more.
case
Your first mistake was assuming ownership wants to field a good team or develop any prospects in the immediate future. I think they’re putting Bido in the telemarketing department.
TheMan 3
there was a valid reason why the Bucs non tendered him
PiratesFan1981
I think Shelton missed used him. The guy is capable of being a setup pitcher if used properly. Maybe even closer once he gets his feet wet
mlb1225
Bido being a closer is a stretch, if you ask me. He doesn’t have the power, nor the command to be a closing pitcher. There’s no pitch in his arsnel that you look at and think “Yeah, that’s a great pitch.”
misterfigs
But really, what choice did he have (Dear God, I’m defending Shelton). I mean, he had two legitimate starters, two guys like Ortiz and Priester to spot start and nothing else.
mlb1225
Not saying that Bido wouldn’t be better as a starter, but he’s not a high leverage guy. He’s fine as a 2-inning middle reliever, but that’s about it.
misterfigs
No, you’re 100% right. I’m just saying that Shelton didn’t have a lot of choice. Starters injured, some just showing they weren’t ready….if it wasn’t Bido, it would be Falter or someone else in the pen
mlb1225
I really think that Bido, Falter, and Jackson would have made a fine three-inning trio. Just te Pirates never had a chance because they were so hamstrung on starting pitching.

Yup, agreed.

Bro doesn’t even have good AA numbers.

Major league contract? WOW. A’s aren’t going to try to win till they head to Vegas now are they?

Fisher’s practicing craps…
JohnFisher’s$1BlumpkinSpecial
Nah, Fisher is practicing being a Dubai Porta-Potty in order to fund his portion of the stadium.
Robertowannabe
Good luck to Bido. Has the heat does not walk a lot of batters but throws a ton of pitches per inning and faces a lot of batters in most outings. Has had some great looking starts to games with limited numbers of pitches then starts getting wild and guys get on and then suddenly he would give up an ugly inning with some runs and a ton of pitches and run of gas. If can get consistent/more efficient and avoid the big innings he could be a decent starter.
mlb1225
Bido was the definition of ‘meh’. Stuff+ had him at 97, 4.50 ERA/3.62 FIP in his first 30 innings, struggled down the line, though his numbers are heavily influenced by the 8 ER/5 BB outing in 2.1 innings he had on August 26th. Not a bad up-and-down long reliever/6th starter type pitcher, though asking him to be more than that is stretching him thin. Kind of reminds me of Jeanmar Gomez, who wasn’t bad in that sort of role for the Pirates in 2013-2014, though that’s probably Bido’s ceiling.
wvsteve
Isn’t a bad coming out of pen but not a starter
darthdragula
How can you be the worst staff in baseball and still be above 0 in replacement wins?
Who are the replacements? The University of Alaskas women’s volleyball team?
mlb1225
Replacement level doesn’t literally mean your next replacement. Replacement level is “the level of production you could get from a player that would cost you nothing but the league minimum salary to acquire” by FanGraphs’ definition. His WAR doesn’t go from 0.0 to -2 if you put him on the Rays, Mariners, or Phillies, the only teams this year with 20+ fWAR combined in their pitching staffs.
misterfigs
The poster child for Derek Shelton’s 2 starter/3 reliever game starting pitching staff. As @Robertowannabe stated above, he’d actually surprise you with a good inning or two before falling apart and if you like a pitcher to quickly dispose of a hitter, well, he’s probably going to be hard to watch
Shadow_Banned
Signs a major league deal with the triple AAA As.
wvsteve
Bido could have been used in a trade to get me of the As SPs
jdgoat
The A’s are about to have some of the worst rosters of all time before they move on to Vegas.
Gumby82
That’s their goal, and as an A’s fan, it makes me violently ill and wish pain and suffering upon John Fisher, Dave Kaval and every other lying worm in that disgusting organization
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Imagine the A’s go on a 25game win in 2024 in September. 10 games back of the Astros to start the month. They start slow losing the first 3 games then they win the last 25 in a row take over the AL West by sweeping the Astros with 4 straight shutouts in Houston. They do all this after the owners vote to approve their relocation
unpaidobserver
Imagine this instead: it’s late September. The A’s take on the Mariners in Oakland, who are also by now out of contention. They announce the paid attendance. Three people have paid to come to this game.
Two of them have come to chant epithets at John Fisher and the other one is their agnostic friend. The way their voice carries and echoes freaks them out and they decide to leave before the seventh inning.
Dave1966
Watched him pitch multiple games in Indy in person and always thought as well to try him as a 8th inning set up guy . Wouldn’t have hurt to try it in Indianapolis and see if results. While Kyle Nicolas is a better pitcher he really looked good in Indianapolis once switched .
Mikenmn
When the article says the A’s “signed” a player, does that mean they actually have to pay him?
baseballteam
Seems like he’s a good pitcher other than getting shelled.
Datashark
A’s just need 1 more signing – they usually sign an aging player well out of their prime after that they are built to finish last again.
misterfigs
I figure at this rate, either the Pirates bring back Rich Hill or the A’s sign him
JoeBrady
Seems like some decent numbers for a guy that costs nothing.
luca brasi
For those of you, who are not happy about the A’s adding Bido to the bullpen mix, I’ve got two words for you: Zack Neal. Have you all forgotten how the scoreboard operator would add five runs to the opponent score while Neal was jogging in from the bullpen?

Enter Osvaldo and Bido farewell to that lead

A’s are quickly becoming the Pirates West.
Keep signing Pirate castoffs to guarantee a 100 loss season.
However Andujar may surprise everyone.
Mendoza Line 215
Andujar won’t surprise me.He was never given a real chance with the Pirates. If the A’s give him regular work for 40 games he will be hitting at least 300 and driving in runs.
unpaidobserver
Oakland is a cavern. Hitting the ball hard sometimes merely ensures a longer out.
Don T
The A’s master plan of signing cheap unknown players continues unabated. I’m guessing they’ll turn over maybe 50% of last years players and put an equally bad team on the field in 2024. The goal is not to win games but to keep payroll as low as possible. Who in their right mind would pay to watch this team? This used to be one of the best franchises in baseball. Now it’s easily the worst.
