The Angels announced Tuesday that they’ve hired Barry Enright as their new pitching coach. The former big league righty has spent the past two seasons on the D-backs’ staff, working as an assistant pitching coach under Brent Strom.
Enright, 37, pitched in the Majors from 2010-13, splitting his time between the two teams for which he’s now coached. Arizona selected him in the second round of the 2007 draft and gave him his MLB debut in 2010. He spent two seasons there and also had briefer stints with the 2012-13 Halos. As Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times points out, Enright’s final year with the Halos overlapped with Mike Trout’s rookie year in Anaheim.
Overall, Enright pitched 148 2/3 innings in the Majors. While his career on the mound didn’t yield the best results, we’ve seen time and time again that a successful big league playing career is in no way a prerequisite for a successful run as a coach or manager. His time with the D-backs surely proved quite instructive, as Strom is regarded as one of the industry’s top pitching minds.
Enright joins a revamped Halos coaching staff under incoming manager Ron Washington. Since the end of the season, the Angels have moved on from hitting coach Marcus Thames, pitching coach Matt Wise and catching coordinator Drew Butera. In their places, the Angels have hired Johnny Washington as hitting coach, Jerry Narron as catching coach and now Enright as pitching coach. The Angels have also added former big league infielder Ryan Goins as an infield coach and veteran coach/manager Bo Porter to be Washington’s first base coach.

Half of these coaches will be gone at the end of the season and the other half after next.

Quit ruining the future.

Man, I wish you set odds in Vegas sports book, I’d be rich.
You’re just another Troll.

steven st croix ,
Preparation H might help you.
Blah blah blah
Trout’s rookie year was 2012 (though was called up for some time in 2011) and Barry Enright pitched with Angels from 2012-2013. His both Angels seasons overlapped with Trout.

I don’t know how to build a car, but I sure know when something is wrong.
There is, and has been something wrong. In this case, change is good.

@Halo
Must admit that all these moves make pretty good sense. I genuinely hope Moreno backs the new managerial team with a little more support on the ground (literally) by renovating the ST complex and trying to improve the medical staff behind the likes of Trout, Rendon etc. etc. etc. But as a team of staffers they are a team with serious experience mixed with bright young things. It is a good balance and I wish the Angels well.
Halo11Fan
It does seem baffling that Rendon was misdiagnosed. And that management kept it hidden.
That entire the press was managements fault. Players don’t give medical reports, why was the idiot Sam Blum going around Angel managenet?
A'sfaninLondonUK
@ Halo – frankly completely beyond me, and just how can you so badly mismanage what is in cold terms a $35m annual asset.
I just wish Arte could put roughly equal measures into each of 8 x 8 chess squares, if you excuse the analogy, instead of choosing 23 at random like a drunken knight. It baffles me. Even as an A’s fan!
troutfishing
I also do not care much for Sam Blum.

And it’s baffling that their minor league complex is the worst in the game. And it’s baffling how this organization doesn’t invest in Latin America. Baffling that they don’t send their broadcasters on the road with the team. Baffling that during Covid they fired their scouts. Baffling that knowing they needed to win last year in order to keep Ohtani they needed to added premium starters and instead chose to sign a soft tossing lefty in Anderson. Baffling that they gave away so many assets at the trading deadline and through waivers when they could have traded them for assets they could use this off season to add pitching. Baffling that we now know that Tampa Bay offered their stud third baseman who is going to be a star, as well as two other good prospects for Ohtani and we chose to keep Ohtani for one more month. The entire organization is baffling.
Halo11Fan
Except for the road stuff, Carl, I cant disagree with a word of it.
Langston almost died in Houston, and I’m sure they would rather be home than travel. I think it’s one of the few times they do right by their employees.
Don Drysdale did die on the road. Such a travel schedule isn’t healthy for older broadcasters.
TAKERDBACKS
The angels hate pitching
Halo11Fan
Another genius heard from.
TAKERDBACKS
Bitter much?
TAKERDBACKS
Are you the guy I laughed at and told your horrible moves wouldn’t work? You told me your pitching was solid and tyler Anderson was a great move? Sounds like you
Halo11Fan
I never said Anderson was a great move. And after 2022, I and a lot of others thought starting pitching wasn’t the issue for 2023.
And I also think in 2024 that starting pitching isn’t the biggest issue.
And not bitter, trolls have to be trolls. You must not have a life. I have a great one. I don’t need to go on other team’s thread, make stupid comments, to feel good about myself.
prov356
Halo – I like your car analogy…and you don’t need to defend yourself to doofus.
TAKERDBACKS
What in God’s name are you talking about. I said one comment and you went to a miserable comment. Your clearly mad at your team not me. It’s ok let it out. I got more bad news for you. Trout is leaving as well. You won’t be relevant for years. So do yoga or something.
TAKERDBACKS
lmaoo
Halo11Fan
You wrote a worthless derogatory comment about a team you know nothing about, about a team you couldn’t care less about?
You hit the troll trifecta.
TAKERDBACKS
Brother I know a million times more then you. I am a baseball guru my man. I speak on my youtube channel everyday. Try again. I’m done. as much done as the angels are.
prov356
yes, taker, you are a very big deal. thanks for being here.
TAKERDBACKS
your welcome. Funny how this went from angels hate pitching to miserable angel fans angry about that one sentence. No wonder Ohtani can’t wait to leave. Enright was a dback and that’s exactly why I said that.
fansincethe80s
Wow you self publish on the youtube daily. That takes… no credentials.
Halo11Fan
It’s more “than” you. Man, what a moron!!
Halo11Fan
It’s “you’re” welcome. Again, what a moron!!!
Halo11Fan
The guy thinks he knows baseball. Only a ignoramus thinks the Angels hate pitching.
Thirty nine of the Angels last 58 picks have been spent on pitching.
The guys is a moron.
prov356
taker – you need serious help sir. here is some light reading for you:
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. It is better to be of lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Proverbs 16:18-19).
Hope this helps. Pride’s a killer.
Halo11Fan
“Then” in place of “than”. “Your” in place of “you’re”,
And two third of the Angels picks the last three years have been on pitching and he thinks the Angels hate pitching.
He’s a teenage troll who thinks he knows about things and clearly doesn’t.
Halo11Fan
How did a erroneous post about me liking the Anderson move get four likes? That’s funny.
You should go back and read the Anderson thread. We now know you don’t value truth either.

If he’s a descendant of Strom, sounds like a good hire to me.

Hey, I just thought of something. Let’s get some players now.

prov356
Good little read. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully that’s true.
kellin
Much of the speculation I read on Sports Illustrated I take with a grain of salt, because they talk more out of their arses than certain other reporters.. but I’m hoping this is more straight up reporting and truth. So yeah, I’m also hoping its true. I dunno if it’d convince Ohtani to stay, but we’ll see.
Halo11Fan
You mean they talk out of their butts as much as all other reporters.
I like this site because I don’t have to go to all those crazy places.
prov356
I was watching MLB Channel last night (I was really bored) and they had a segment talking about Trout being traded and how cool it would be for him and Ohtani to go to the Dodgers together. Those guys are so Yankees centric they are hard to watch. Joel Sherman, in the discussion, talked about Trout and Ohtani playing at Dodgers Stadium “90 miles” away from Angels Stadium. Try 30 miles away.
I wonder if Sherman is ever a guest on taker’s youtube channel. They seem well matched.
Halo11Fan
Ninety miles? Did they have the Padres on their brain?
AngelsFan1972
Wash is putting together an interesting group of coaches. A nice blend of seasoned vs new”ish” coaches.
Now in the immortal words of prov356
“Let’s get some players now”.
