The Angels have hired Braves third base coach Ron Washington to fill their managerial vacancy, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. He has signed a two-year contract with the club, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Angels have now announced the hiring of Washington.
The Angels parted ways with manager Phil Nevin as the 2023 regular season was winding down and recent reporting suggested they were leaning towards an experienced manager to take the gig. Washington, 72 in April, surely fits the bill there. After his playing career ended, he quickly transitioned into a coaching role in the early ’90s, working for the Mets and Athletics.
He got his first managerial gig with the Rangers going into 2007. After a few middling seasons, the club broke out in 2010 and 2011. They won 90 and 96 games in those two seasons, respectively, going to the World Series both times. Though they didn’t win the title in either of those trips, those remained the only two World Series appearances in franchise history until the club finally won it all here in 2023.
The Rangers won 93 games in 2012 but lost the Wild Card game to the Orioles. Another 91 wins followed in 2013 but that left them just a single game out of the playoffs. Things took a sour turn in 2014, with the club falling in the standings. They would eventually finish 67-95 and in last place in the American League West, but Washington was already gone by then. He resigned in early September, citing an off-the-field matter, which he later admitted was an extramarital affair.
He has been in various coaching roles since that time, having joined the Athletics in May of 2015 and then Atlanta going into 2017. He has received interest from clubs with managerial vacancies over those years but this will now be his first gig as a bench boss since that eight-year stretch with the Rangers. His hiring appears to be part of a trend among some clubs who have opted for experienced managers of late. The Astros hired Dusty Baker going into 2020 when he was 70. The Rangers hired 67-year-old Bruce Bochy a year ago, just one season after the Mets hired 65-year-old Buck Showalter.
The latter was considered a candidate for this job with the Halos but it appears he lost out to Washington. The club seemed to cast a wide net, reportedly considering options like Benji Gil, Darin Erstad, Torii Hunter, Tim Salmon, Ron Roenicke, Gary DiSarcina, Ray Montgomery and perhaps others.
Washington will now take over a team that hasn’t had much success and it’s hard to tell what their path forward is at the moment. Despite having superstars Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout on the club for the past six years, the Halos haven’t found any real on-field success in that time. Their last winning season was 2015, last playoff appearance was 2014 and last postseason victory was 2009. Now Ohtani is a free agent while Trout is 32 years old and has dealt with significant injury issues in recent years.
That makes it hard to gauge where they will go over the two years of this deal. Re-signing Ohtani is still on the table but it’s also possible he winds up somewhere else. Some have suggested the club should consider a rebuild in that scenario but it’s unclear if the club’s decision makers would agree with that assessment.
There should be more clarity in the months to come, but the Angels now have a skipper and can move on to figuring out those other unknowns. This hiring leaves three open manager positions around the league, with the Astros, Padres and Brewers still looking for a new bench boss for 2024. Meanwhile, Atlanta will have to find a new third base coach.

I like this
wtf….
Dream on baby
No baby
Dream on until your dreams come true?
Anyone hug you lately?
He’s 71. Buck Showalter is a master strategist and four time manager of the year. I’m sorry, but SHowalter was the obvious choice. I’m sure Washington will be fine, but it doesn’t matter who the manager is if they don’t add at least three significant arms.
Where are we going to find a manager with that many arms?
Lol…I get it
@carllafong: Obvious to you in your little bubble, anyway.
Mike Lupica, the Baghdad Bob of sports journalism, wanted the Angels to make Showalter their new skipper. Another trial balloon shot down!
Lupica wrote some good books, I think. Hadn’t seen that name for years…
Rangers fan here. We had both back to back. Ron Washington is a better manager than Buck Showalter.
Showalter is one of the two worst managers in Ranger history. The other is Doug Rader.
Bobby Valentine begs to differ.
Doug Rader was a horrible manager.
Is that so? Do you remember not positioning Nelson Cruz deep enough with two outs ?They lost the Series because of that. You don’t let a ball get ball go over your head unless it’s off the fence.
Nelson Cruz had ample time to make that play. He botched it.
I remember Cruz should have been subbed out for a defensive replacement. He had no business being in the game at that point. That said, Wash won’t make the same mistake again.
Do you really want to take out one of your best bats in case the game goes extra innings? I wouldn’t.
@etex211: Ted Williams wasn’t that great either.
And FWIW, Billy Sample told me that he enjoyed playing for Rader more than for Darrell Johnson.
With a 2 run lead in the bottom of the 9th and my closer entering the game, I sub in Endy Chavez everyday and twice on Sunday. I’m not going to keep a defensive liability like Cruz in RF on the small chance the game goes extra innings. No question in my mind. No hesitation whatsoever.
@Angels & NL West
How do you know Washington won’t make a similar mistake in a game situation as a manager?
It’s easy in retrospect. The odds of him coming up in a big situation are a lot better than him botching a fly ball.
First of all, I hope the Angels reach game 6 of the World Series with a three games to two lead and a two run lead in the bottom of the 9th. On the off chance this occurs, I would like to think Wash learned a valuable lesson in 2011. After all, don’t the Angels want him, in large part, due to his extensive experience? Even if Wash doesn’t think to sub out a defensive liability, I would hope his Bench Coach, Infield Coach or Outfield Coach would say something. Heck, I hope the defensive replacement would say something. Perhaps an Angels fan sitting near the dugout could offer up some timely advice?
And that was the first year of his career he had a negative DRS. At that point, he wasn’t a bad outfielder.
I think people are playing the 20-20 hindsight game
I would think the odds of a game going extra innings with your closer on the bump in the 9th and a 2-run lead are pretty small. By comparison, a fly ball to RF seems pretty commonplace.
Endy Chaves was a much better fielder than Cruz.
He played 41 innings in right field that year. Maybe half of in that ball park. And throughout his career, he want a better right fielder.
You are playing Monday morning quarterback and it’s beneath you. Now I’m sure you’ll come up with some strange position to save face, but you’ll save more face if you don’t.
I didn’t know Endy Chavez played for the Rangers.
I just looked it up, and he had an 83-game cup of coffee in Texas out of 1,151 games in his career.
Barely worth mentioning.
Blue, he came into RF exactly one time that year in the 9th inning and that was in a 10-3 win.
This was the quintessential second guess.
I remember him splitting time between LF and RF for the Mets from 2006-2008, with occasional games backing up Carlos Beltran in CF.
Looking it up, Chavez was average in RF every year but 2008, in which he was very good. And looking it up, up until 2011, Cruz was better than average in RF, and the first year he was below average was 2011.
Up until 2011, Cruz was +10 in DRs in RF.
Mets fans revere Chavez for a phenomenal catch he made in LF in game 7 of the 2006 NLCS at Shea Stadium, where he reached over the bullpen fence to rob Scott Rolen (Cardinals) of a home run.
But the Mets went on to lose the game, so I have never understood why such a big deal was made about the catch.
Halo, it’s Baseball 101 to replace a defensive liability with a better defender late in the game when you have a lead. You said yourself that Cruz was a “below average” fielder in 2011. This isn’t Monday morning quarterbacking. This is Baseball 101 and managers, including Nevin, do it regularly. Why are we even having this discussion?
It wasn’t done all year and at that point in his career he was +5 DRS. And up until 2011 he was better than Chavez.
At the time, No one would have thought Washington should replace Cruz with Chavez. It’s Monday morning quarterbacking.
Halo, if the Angels are leading a game by two runs in the bottom of the 9th and Estevez is on the hill, do you have Adell or Phillips in LF? This isn’t rocket science.
Keep digging.
Maddon has a better win %, actually won a WS, is a 3 time Manager of the Year winner, and has widely been considered a baseball genius….and he couldn’t do it.
You would prefer to go with a man who couldn’t handle the highest payroll in MLB history? I don’t have issues with Showalter, I think he is a good manager. But to say he was the clear choice, clearly he wasn’t.
Ron deserves this shot. He spent years working on his personal life and cleaning that up. Every team he has been on LOVED him. He is a great Manager. Also, the potential coaches he might bring in with him sound pretty exciting.
He also won’t be around that long on the team considering his age, so he could be helping get their next Manager ready.
Buck looked badly fatigued whereas Ron’s pot belly was bouncy and delightful.
Ron it is.
Please sober up and get yourself together!
But can he pitch?
Probably good they’re hiring Washington as manager, since he’s getting a little old to play infield. Even for the Angels.
Quick answer: would you rather have Wash play 3rd or Rendon?
What kind of question is that? Rendon doesn’t even play. You’d be better off having a “ghost” fielder.
Washington is the manager and kind of old to play 3B or any other position.
@…AND PRINT IT!!! I understand that recreational weed is legal now, but that doesn’t mean you should be smoking it and having hallucinogenic dreams like this.
Not just “smoke and mirrors”.
This move has a high ceiling and a low floor.
Definitely a big gamble, but I think the right call.
Hope he doesn’t blow it.
I see what you did there…and a rec for you
Dare I say, “He’s up to snuff”?
I’m inclined to think hiring Wash will give the team a bump. With a few more moves this team will be one you can’t just sneeze at. Down the line, when the dust settles, will this be the year the players finally don’t crack up and/or flake out? Will it be enough for the Big C Championship? Will they finally get the white whale? Or will it be another false hope snow job where they fall off the rails once again? We shall see. All we can do is sit back, have a coke, and watch.
Idiocy
Stick to flipping burgers. You need to be funny to he a comedian.
I think if I practiced more I could get good. But it is hard to find time flipping burgers all day long. You know?
I’d’ve picked the Everly Brothers but Tyler probably has more resonance today. Thanks for the funny post.
There is a God afterall!
I like this for Ron Washington. Who I didn’t think was going to get another shot at a job. He gets to sign a 3-5 year deal, work 2 of them, and then collect money after he’s inevitably fired because the front office can’t team build. I’m glad it’s not some up and coming guy who would fail and never get another chance.
Dang, that’s a great retirement plan!
That is actually the most plausible response I’ve read in response to this. That’s the Halo way.
For what a year or year and a half. The Angels will lose Ohatani and they weren’t good with them. Moreno seems to think a manager carousel will fix that but only addressing actual weak points will. Although a healthy trout sure helps
Let’s hope this works
Great hire!
I wish the Pads had signed him but he doesn’t strike me as a yes man.
Hobo Ron back in the managerial seat! Love it!
Said the morally derelict
Welp, there you have it. Good choice. Now let’s build a ball club.
Good call!
I love Ron Washington so seeing this has me praying for him. Watch him go from beloved to a scapegoat in a year or two.
I hope not. Wash is a good dude, he deserves a second chance.
he deserves another crack at it
I see what you did there.
Until Arte sells there will be a string of scapegoats, none of whom will be his college buddies in the executive suites.
HaloHeavenJJ,
Sadly, yes but enjoy him while he’s there.
Do you guys have someone at 1B? I know Walsh was the guy but he cratered. Just wondering, because then Wash might be a good fit for teaching a new guy how to play 1B.
Nolan Schanuel. 74 minor league ABs.
I’m not the least bit sold on a Punch and Judy first baseman with a 330 slugging PCT, but the Angels have to let that play out.
You can say he’ll develop power, and he might, but not with that swing, And if the Angels change that swing, then he’s a complete unknown and why did the Angels bring him up if they were going to change his swing?
I would like high BA and OBP with some base stealing team. It may not fit the sabermatrics model but they can assemble a fun team while rebuilding.
Schanuel reminds me of a young Freddie Freeman, upright stand with quick hands and a level swing to all parts of the field. Freddie learned how to develop power without losing his ability to make consistent contact. Not saying that Schanuel will develop the same way, but he could become a serviceable first baseman for years to come
What does he do? He gets on base.
Data wise, nothing like Freeman, at 21 Freeman had a sub 350 OBP with 140 strikeouts… Schanuel would have to wear an eye patch to have a sub 350 BP with 143 strikeouts. Freeman also slugged about 450. With his current swing, no way can Schanuel drive the ball.
Basically, no one in the Angels squared a baseball as often as Schanuel, no one hit the ball softer, and no one had a lower launch angle.
If the Angels change his swing, then no one has any idea who he is. If they don’t change his swing, his upside is Luis Arraez. And there is nothing wrong with that. IMO, the Angels would be fools to screw with his swing.
Al Conin. Nothing wrong with that. People should not expect him to be something he is not.
Schanuel will do fine.
I liked what I saw. He got on base. He can work on the rest
Agreed Halo11Fan. He’s not the prototypical 1B but him leading off with that OBP ahead of 3-4 run producers would be fun.
I’m curious to see how it plays out. Nothing was wrong with a Angel Rod Carew season without the stolen bases.
I had never heard of him. Schanuel is an interesting player. SUPER high obp
The kid had video game numbers across college and his brief stint in the minors. It’ll be a blast to see what becomes of him over the next five seasons.
Lots of kids have video game numbers in college.
We saw a kid who has amazing bat to ball skills, and a very good eye. The bat speed isn’t there, the launch angle isn’t there.
He’s interesting player.
Jack
It will be fun to see what he does .Every game he has been he has reached base. He could be a special talent.
If he can keep the K rate down and continue to reach base, then keep him in the line up. You can’t have a line up of guys whole are worried all about launch angle. You need guys on the bases as well.
What about beloved scapegoat? Houston had Dusty apologizing for years he wasn’t even their manager.
Interesting. Was hoping for Roenicke, but he didn’t seem to be a real candidate.
Another better option than Mark Kotsay. I hate being an A’s fan and I hate A’s demonic owner John nepo baby Fisher
What’s wrong with Kots? In the handful of A’s games I watched this year, Kots seemed good-to-go in the dugout.
You are right about the owner, Fisher. He exploited that team and should be kicked out of the Rich Boys Who Own Toys club.
Could also just relegate him to the kids table with the other Undeserving Boys of Inherited Wealth Who Own Toys Club. I’ll volunteer the Tigers Chris Illitch as a charter member along with Fisher.
Kotsay is a good clubhouse guy from player accounts, blame Fisher for the mediocre product on the field.
Very glad the Astros did not.
Goodness. How many years is he going to manage? He’s 71. Guess Perry loved him from the ATL days (assuming there was overlap)…
Great hire. Washington has been overdue to get back to the main position as a manager. We all know why he had to get knocked back for a few years, but he was a good manager before and he still is. Loved him when he was on the A’s.
Bean: “first base isn’t that difficult…tell him Wash”
Washington: ” it’s incredibly difficult”
Hahahaha amazing nice throwback
Nice move. Players love him. Plenty of experience. Thought it would be Buck, but I think Angels fans should be happy here.
Oh boy, hope he can handle the pressure better than he did last time he managed.
he kind of cracked did he not
Happy for him
Good choice.
Wasn’t he a manager before? That goes way back if I’m recalling correctly.
Yeah, of course. Many years.
You do know there is an article above the comments right? That contains this info…
I come here for the forums, not to read. Moany of the authors are inaccurate anyway.
Dumbest comment of the year from one of the dumbest online commenters I’ve ever seen. Kudos.
You haven’t blocked me yet? Honestly, I’m on my phone, the scroll is endless with these articles. But block me, because you all know I’m the biggest troll on here.
That’s right- take everything I say literally. Don’t take time to assess what I mean from my writing.
Young People, am I right?
Atlanta is going to really miss Wash.
This makes me happy for Wash but very sad for the Braves.
As a Braves fan, I’m sad. But as a So Cal resident who goes to a lot of Angels games, I’m okay with this hire
Glad the Angels are picking a fun hire – and they picked the most qualified fun hire too.
Hear, hear !
The in-game between inning interviews will be a riot. And on 7-second delay. A great guy.
Chop em up and Rack them lines! Ron’s in town
Have a coke and a smile!
Texas will always love Ron Washington. Angels got a great guy.
Damn, I’m going to miss wash, I might have taken him as manager of snitker.
I would take him over snit
RW fits well within the Bochy-test Minasian spoke about recently: an old timer, with an intuitive sense for the game, and a healthy respect for analytics!
Yes- Operative word a “healthy” respect for analytics.
With the current state of the organization, the fact that Minasian is entering the last year of his contract and there will be no Shohei Ohtani made the job barely desirable. Wash and Showalter are both experienced and worked with Minasian. No surprise that it came down to those two. I am down with Wash.
Going to miss him but glad he’s getting another chance to manage. Angels are getting a very good baseball man and couldn’t have found a better manager.
let’s hope he doesn’t turn to crack again when Trout gets injured and the Angels suck again
Classy
It was coke and any good critic should know the difference. Coke is for rich guys who are having too much fun. Crack is for zombies on the street. Wash may look homeless but he has more skills than any poster on here and more money too.
Old school still works regardless of how hard MLB tries to make actual managing obsolete so good for Wash getting another chance at management. It’s an uphill battle to get the Angels back to the postseason but Ron should be fun to watch
The computer decides the lineup cards and the coaches manage the psychology of the players. In the end, its still people with people problems that need to win the games.
Sorry,Buck!!
Good hire!!
Nice ! Good for Him. Class act for the Org. Will definitely bring order. Goofball around.
Ron is a great coach and he’s had success as a manager before, hopefully they let him coach/mentor the many young guys they have.
Would hav3 been perfect for the Brewers, too bad
I know he was fond of Vaugh Grissom wonder if he takes him with him & Braves can get a SP in return.
He’s going to like Neto angels have a shortstop in the majors. They don’t need him
Grissom would be better suited at second than short. He’s kind of a butcher at short.
Dude obviously has had his issues, but he did a good job in Texas, and won a WS recently in ATL. Think it’s a pretty good move for the Angels.
Love this for Wash!
Love this for Neto and Schanuel!
Wash is a solid guy, Great hire, now if Arte and team just let him do his thing,.
As much as I hate to see Wash leave Atlanta, I’m happy he got another (LONG overdue) opportunity to manage again. I do suppose he had a deep desire to return to managing considering I’m not sure the Angels job is exactly set up for any manager to succeed in. However, there are worse things in life than collecting big bucks to live in SoCal. I wish him the best.
Very happy for Wash. He deserved another chance.
Well, I’m guessing this is Perry’s hire.
I’m shocked Arte didn’t get in the way
MC, I wrote pretty much the same thing.
Shocking! I guess this means Arte is letting Minasian call the shots.
If he’s going to bring in someone with Washington’s background, all bets are off. Maybe he is going to let his baseball people run the team.
It’s probably his last year to do so, if they don’t make the playoffs I’m sure he’s out.
Definitely would not have been my choice but his record improving defenses is solid and we definitely need that.
The bigger and more important aspect of this move is Arte is letting his baseball people make the decision. It’s not a small deal.
I was thinking that they should make a strong play for Joe Espada, this was unexpected coming from Arte.
A 71 year old, old school baseball guy seems more like and Arte hire than not.
Arte did take a step back last year, so we’ll see.
JJ, I agree with your statement.
I prefer Ron as a coach
But I doubt he’d have left one coaching job for another coaching job. If we wanted him, this was it.
Over the years I’ve become pals with Mike Gallego who was the Moneyball era infield coordinator for the A’s. He’s great at both reading the data and simply knowing how to play.
I’d like to see him brought back to the coaching staff in that role.
Let’s Go Angels!
Was hoping RW would be the new Giants Mgr…
Unfortunately as with most new generation team management, I knew they are too obsessed with an unhealthy relationship with analytics & manufactured BS.
If anyone can pull Rendon’s head out of his ass it’s Ron Washington…..
I believe Washington will bring a great deal of enthusiasm, commitment & mutual respect to the character & on field performance to Angel baseball- I will be rooting for his success.
Great hire. Nice to see RW back in charge.
Here we go Ron!
Love the hire. He always looks so in tuned with the game when interacting with Braves players.
I like it. I always thought Wash deserved another shot, even if he’s getting a little old.
Good luck Ron. You’re gonna need it.
You play defense with your feet. Scott Spiezio was playing third and played tangle foot on a pretty easy ground ball that went into LF. Washington was coaching third and was showing Spiezio how to go after that ball. I laughed out loud that an Oakland coach was mentoring Spiezio on an obvious deficiency in his game.
I say this because Rengifo has the worst feet I’ve seen since Spiezio. This actually bodes well for Rengifo because I don’t think Washington will play him unless he can develop a cross over step, and I bet Washington, and staff, unlike this current regime, will not treat his footwork development as an afterthought.
Rengifo also has throwing deficiency from second to first.
Was hoping Wash would become the IF coordinator throughout the Mets system. They missed how good JD Davis could be at 3B. They haven’t been able to teach Baty or Vientos basic competence at 3B. The org farts around moving players here and there throughout the season, failing to put them at positions they might stick at if properly coached. They still have no idea where Mauricio is going to play despite having had him for half a decade (it’s THIRD you nincompoops! THIRD BASE!!).
Today’s weather in Anaheim and the rest of the week is partly snowy with flurries expected late.
Ron Washington did an outstanding job with the Braves infield, with all his players crediting him with their individual improvement. He will be missed, but as a fan, happy for him to get another opportunity to manage.
Big shoes to fill for the Braves.
Great hire, platers on Braves loved him. He would work with anybody who needed extra help. I wish my White Sox would have hired him!!
@€
Not only the platers, but the players too
Good for Wash! He deserves another chance to lead a team and hope he can find some success with the Angels. I know the Braves will miss him.
Not much if any of an improvement over Nevin. Arte should just sell the team.
I thought Nevin and Maddon were buffoons. So I think it can’t be worse.
Typically, I razz the Angels for two reasons:
1) They do a lot of stupid things
2) I’m a Mariners fan
Today, those aren’t good enough reasons. Without knowing their plan (does this mean they’re keeping their foot on the gas?), I’m not going to criticize it because I think Washington is a great manager and will be really good for that clubhouse, I’m just not sure his age meshes with the Angels actual timeline.
I would have taken the Rally Minkey….however, i am glad that Showalter is out
Great coach and better man Not an Angels fan but well done. A blind squirrel, AKA Moreno occasionally finds a nut..
Too bad its the wrong move, the Angels could have gotten a home town boy in Aaron Boone and a throw in General Mgr Trashman…shucks he could be out at Yosemite climbing El Capitan without a rope too!
64′ Yanks
What are next weeks lotto numbers?
Way to go Wash. Screw the naysayers. And I don’t understand the interpretation that this was a “Minasian hire” or “Artie is giving up control”. I thought Showalter was Minasian’s guy. So who knows. Looking forward to some solid fundamentals and defense. The way the Angels used to play.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Trout requests a trade to Philly or to the Yankees.
Big loss for the Braves. He will be missed by players, coaches, management, fans and more.
But he really, really deserves the chance to manage again.
Good move by the Angels
Not that big a loss. For the infielders yes, but for the dozens of players he’s had thrown out at home plate over the past several years, killing rallies, not so much.
I fear Buck asked for assurances that he could run the team as he wished (coaches, style of play, etc) without interference from ownership and Washinton just went along with the program so he could manage again. Post Sciocia, the Angels/Arte don’t have a good history hiring managers – Ausmus, Madden and Nevin. Hope I’m wrong.
I thought they might have called Sciocia to come back. They haven’t had a winning season since he left.
FYI – they had three straight sub .500 years before Sosh left.
Great hire!
Diversity hire. Plain and simple. Angels won’t win more than 62 games with Ron Washington.
By diversity you mean someone with a lot of experience and a winning attitude, right?
If Washington, the coach that turned Scott Hatteberg into a first baseman, Miguel Tejada into a passable shortstop and Marcus Semien into a Gold Glove candidate is not qualified to lead a baseball team please inform me who is.
Washington has been to and won more World Series and penants then the entire angels org combined. Every team he’s on they win. Angels fans don’t deserve him.
I think the fans do. Ownership, on the other hand…
I called it!
I’m happy to see him get another opportunity, but I’m also happy that the Astros aren’t who he’s going to.
This Rangers fan says amen.
I love Ron Washington. I would have hated to have had to sports hate him.
That opportunity still exists if the Angels get good, but it’s not the same.
It s about Fing time he got a job!
Wash!!!
I’m sad he is leaving because he has been the best 3rd base coach we have ever had but he has deserved a 2nd chance at being a big league manager for so long it got ridiculous. He will be appreciated and loved by Braves country forever.
If Krusty Dusty got another chance , why not Wash
I do like Ron Washington as a manager but the Angels as an organization in its entirety really needs to make strides. I hope he doesn’t end up taking too much blame for things as I suspect its going to be a long and difficult process for the Angels to shape themselves into a perennial contender.
Hahahahaha
Gary Mathews, CJ Wilson, Josh Hamilton….
Sorry to see Washington go, but glad to see him get another chance. The Braves players loved him.
So that’s one reason the Angels’ season will be interesting.
I love Ron Washington and I’m thrilled he’s getting another shot at this, but I’m sad it’s with an organization that can’t win.
The idea is he helps them win more games.
Yeah, I get it. He’s a good manager and I’m sure he’ll get more out of his players, whoever they are, than Nevin did, but what’s wrong with this team goes a lot deeper than the dugout. Fourteen years since they’ve won a playoff series. Nine since they reached the postseason at all. Eight straight losing seasons. Four different managers in that time. The organization can’t build a winner. And they seem to have an outsize inability to keep their players healthy. Unless or until the organizational culture around player development and talent evaluation changes, no manager will be good enough to make a significant difference.
Yeah… hey the Angels offseason moves or lack thereof should be fascinating and maybe further mockery of a mockery.
I want to know what his salary is. I’m betting Craig Counsell did “re-set” the pay for managers
Meant to say didn’t
finding a good manager is almost as hard as playing first base
mynameispepe
It is extremely difficult
next line in script? …….
I miss him in Texas. I’m glad he’ll stick around in the AL West.
Good to see Ron get another shot at managing. Sorry it has to be in such a dysfunctional organization with no shot at contending.
I wish the White Sox had fired Pedro Grifol and hired Ron Washington. I am glad to see Washington get a gig again and I’ll be rooting for him.
Like some other sports, baseball is a copycat league. They see Houston getting a chip with Dusty and Texas winning one with Bochy, so why not bring back another old guy? Beyond the numbers, these are human beings that need to be managed and challenged, and there’s relationships to be built. Fans often talk about bullpen management and lineup construction, etc., but people skills are right up there in terms of important attributes in a winning manager.
Washington is no Bochy
2011 World Series Game 6.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug!
Ron Washington…crack manager!
Where manager careers go to die. Thoughts and prayers.
Sell the team Arte!
SELL THE TEAM ARTE!!!
Tell him wash, it’s incredibly hard.
This Coaching Staff is going to be crazy. Tori, Hurdle, EYoung Sr.., Ryan Goins, Chili…omg!!!!!! Can’t wait to see who he gets as a Pitching Coach! Here We Go, Angels!!!!!!!!
Ron Washington is at least as qualified and good as a manager as any of the other candidates out there but I didn’t realize he was so old. For that reason I would have gone a different direction with the selection. Somebody his age won’t necessarily be sticking around more than a few years even if he is successful.
But I’m happy for him now that he has won the job and hope he does well.
Now they just need some 12 year old kid flapping his arms in the stands……
Haven’t been on for a couple days and come back to this news. Must say its unexpected, but not unwelcome.
I hope Washington knows that he is not coming to Anaheim to win a WS to close out his career. Its going to be a hard slog for the next few years until Arte sells or dies.
Happy for him he is getting another shot as manager. Us Barves fans will miss him.
2 year contract? Great Manager but it will take longer than 2 years and somebody needs to have the courage to say Trout is touchable.
Time to get the crake pipe out in la. And celebrate
So glad to see that the youth movement is alive and well in Anaheim.
Have you commited no sin in your life?
This is hilarious.
The difference is that Wash admitted his faults and mistakes and moved on. He worked hard until he EARNED another shot. Bauer has not admitted to any failings, has not moved on and he thinks he deserves another chance without earning it.
I think it’s a good hire.. and since it’s only a 2 year deal. I hope Darin Erstad can be his bench coach and take over as manager in 2 years
I would’ve taken recycled Maddon or Showalter over recycled Ron Washington. Both have a more recent history managing. But anyone stupid enough to hire Phil Nevin is certainly stupid enough to hire Washington as his replacement.
Rezimodos: Most people have completely upside-down world views. Combine that with the desperate need for these Karens to be perceived as heroes for always siding with women, no matter what, even when there’s zero evidence, whenever a woman accuses a man of anything, and you’ve got one major facet of Modern TrashCulture.
What’s ‘wrong’ with frequenting ‘prostitutes’ and being a ‘drug’ ‘addict’?
Why would anyone so thoroughly incorporate the dikta of a crime-producing culture into their thinking and their vocabulary?
JackStrawb: Not sure how many, if any, layers of sarcasm you’re employing, so I’m not sure how to respond. Or perhaps it was all just rhetorical anyway?
After blowing 2 games in the 2011 Series, this guy should be a greeter at Walmart. Shows you what the League thinks of Showalter who may end up working for SNY.
At least he won’t be making any mistakes in the World Series.
