The Rays figure to spend much of their offseason grappling with how to improve their roster despite a $126MM projected payroll (per RosterResource) that would be a franchise record. Given the considerable expected increase in Tampa’s payroll, plenty of speculation has swirled surrounding the future of ace right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who is in the final year of his contract with the Rays and is due $25MM in 2024. Moving Glasnow would trim considerable payroll for the Rays while also allowing them to secure cheaper talent in the return package, a method the club has frequently utilized in recent years when parting ways with players like Blake Snell, Chris Archer and, Evan Longoria.
While it’s certainly feasible the Rays could decide to take that route with Glasnow, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi indicates that such a deal is unlikely to come together any time soon, noting that the club’s talks regarding a Glasnow deal are seen as “preliminary.” Morosi goes on to suggest that a Glasnow trade is more likely to occur after the top tier of free agent starters, which includes Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Aaron Nola and Jordan Montgomery, have found new homes. Waiting until the free agent market plays itself out more is a sensible choice for the Rays; after all, plenty of clubs are rumored to be looking for front-of-the-rotation impact this offseason, and teams that miss out on the aforementioned group of pitchers may be more motivated to get a deal for Glasnow done later in the offseason once the big names of the free agent market are off the table.
More from around the American League…
- Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen is poised to hit free agency following the 2024 season, but it appears that the 28-year-old and the team aren’t planning on getting together on an extension any time soon. In an interview with Scott Mitchell of SportsCentre, Jansen said that though the sides did talk about a potential extension, “both parties agreed to carry on and see what happens throughout this year.” Toronto, of course, has fellow backstop Alejandro Kirk under team control through the end of the 2026 season. Given that reality, the fact that an extension for Jansen appears to not be a top priority for the Blue Jays is hardly a surprise. That’s especially true considering the club’s reported interest in top free agent bats such as Shohei Ohtani and Cody Bellinger.
- The Athletics have now received unanimous approval from MLB owners for their plan to relocate to Las Vegas. In the wake of the relocation vote, team president Dave Kaval interviewed with The Athletic’s Evan Drellich. Kaval expressed the team’s excitement for the coming move. Though he noted that Las Vegas leaves the club with “uncertainty” regarding revenue from local media as the smallest TV market in MLB, Kaval noted that the club expects their new market to “punch a little above its weight” in other areas to make up for that. Kaval also suggested that the club has no interest in leaving the “Athletics” name behind as it moves to the desert. That’s a particularly relevant piece of information given Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has previously indicated that leaving the name in Oakland could be among the city’s demands should the A’s wish to stay in Oakland after their lease expires following the 2024 campaign but prior to the club’s Las Vegas ballpark’s opening, which is expected to occur in time for the start of the 2028 season. Kaval went on to clarify that the club’s current TV deal only applies while the club is playing in the Bay Area, which could provide the club with an additional incentive to get a deal done either with the city of Oakland or to share Oracle Park with the Giants for the 2025-27 seasons.
Pirates winning the Archer trade.
One of the worst trades of all time. Especially since the Rays turned Meadows into Paredes.
It is not a win for the Pirates and I assume op was using some sarcasm, but it is not one of the worst trades of all time either, not eben a top 20 worst trade imo. There are worse trades the Pirates made in their history if you ask me.
I honestly think one of the worst trades in recent history came from the Rays themselves. An elite pitching prospect in Joe Ryan who was ready for the Majors & dominated AAA, for half a season of an aging Nelson Cruz? They’ve won more trades than they’ve lost but as a rays fan I hated it then, and I hate it now.
Basabe for Nate Lowe. Beeks for Eovaldi
Zac Gallen+Alcantara for Ozuna
Yordan Alvarez for Josh Fields
Tatis Jr. for James Shields
Enmanuel Clase for Corey Kluber
Isan Diaz, Lewis Brinson, Monte Harrison, and Jordan Yamamoto for Christian Yelich
Marlins trade Miguel Cabrera
All of these are at least as bad as the Archer trade, if not worse in my opinion.
Mike Piazza for Geoff Goetz, Preston Wilson, and Ed Yarnall.
Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell
He was talking about Marlins trades.
And it was Larry ANDERSEN.
The Marlins got a HAUL for Yelich…well done.
Start from the top Blue Baron
The Tex trade, twice for the Braves was pretty bad.
Then, there was the Adam Wainwright trade, and when the Braves traded with the Dodgers for the guy that got arrested..It was so bad I can’t even remember his name..lol
John Smoltz trade was an easy W, so was the Shelby Miller trade with the D-backs
@tbfern – I hate that trade too. Everyone points to the Snell trade as their worst (which wasn’t great either), but at least they got some use out of Mejia. Nelson was worse than useless.
“Kaval expressed the team’s excitement for the coming move. Though he noted that Las Vegas leaves the club with “uncertainty” regarding revenue from local media as the smallest TV market in MLB…l

This is a feature, not a bug for Fisher. Guarantees he’ll always be a revenue sharing recipient. Yes. That is part of his plan.
no John Fisher is a bug, a leech in fact.
The union agreement saved them from being kicked out of a revenue sharing and while the current empty suit of a commissioner appears to be ignoring obvious pocketing of funds, if the winds shift I don’t think anyone is defending Fisher.
His plan to invest nothing and immediately sell the franchise once the taxpayer funded stadium inflates value was already thwarted by the conditions owners attached to the move. The new TV market is gonna be a problem when he pretends to invest in the new club.
This is the first time I’ve ever rooted for a teacher’s union to win. The A’s are responsible.

+1 your screen name rocks Banana Dacqueri…that’s pretty funny
I’d love it if Glasnow would stop spiking all this pitches, thanks!
Fiest things first right? Haha
if youre a starter who averages 80ip/year and have never topped 120, you cant be called an ace
Unless you are Kumar “The Ace” Rocker.
He has ace-level stuff when he does pitch. But you’re right – the best ability is availability.
Would you tell my wife that please
I don’t care if it’s tomorrow or March Glasnow will be dealt. And I highly doubt his value is going to go up by waiting until the other guys sign. It’s 25 million for a guy who has never pitched over 120 innings that’s just not that appealing.
Someone will take a chance on him giving them more. Not saying he will but someone will pay like he will. I think they can still get a decent prospect for him. So many teams need pitching and his cost will be far less than burns.
What kind of prospect do you think they get for him?
Of course the cost in trading for him will be far less than Burnes. Burnes is a legit ace who will make far less than Glasnow.
Glasnow is a legit ace, too… when healthy. His stats since joining TB are flat out dominant. He just can’t be counted on to stay healthy for the entire year. But at only one year, $25 million plenty of teams will be interested.
Prob a back in top 100 guy and flyer or two.
So many teams are looking for pitching. I’m sure some teams will buy the potential.
He is prob properly paid for a single year which means he will get something decent from a team that thinks they can contend this year.
One year sound bad but it has value because you don’t have to commit long term. Plus a team can get a pick if he walks in free agency I believe.
Burnes would get more but he isn’t being traded, at least not before the season. Maybe at the deadline if the Brewers are out of it, which I don’t expdxt to happen
Prob depends on what the cubs do. The brewers don’t strike me as a team that can let him walk for a pick unless they feel very good about making the playoffs. Which right now they should feel pretty good.
If teams want potential they can sign Frankie Montas. Or Ryu. Or Paxton. And all those guys will cost much less than Glasnow.
We will see. I bet they don’t get squat for him. They will be lucky if they get out of the 25 million.
You can sign Sonny Gray for 25 million and he came in 2nd in Cy Young votes last year.
What team is sitting around with 25 million to spend and would choose to spend it this way? I think maybe the Dodgers would take him but they wint give anything up to get him besides a mid 20s overcooked prospect.
Maybe you’re right but for one year my guess is a team trades for the upside.
Look at the number of teams that need pitching. Most need more than one. There are what 5-7 guys you can list that are a better bet.
@renemberthecoop: “Burnes isn’t being traded, at least not before the season.”
Unless, of course, the Brewers trade him before the season.
They get Mauricio and Alex Ramirez from the Mets.
Joel P. – Are you suggesting Sonny Gray signs a 1 year deal for $25MM? I really doubt that happens.
Gray will sign for 25 a year 3 or 4 years. Is there a bit more risk with that? Sure. But he’s better than Glasnow.
That’s actually a lot more risk in a 4 year deal over a 1 year deal. Just ask the Rays about that risk, with 3 starting pitchers on IL and Baz coming back from essentially a 2 year absence because of TJS.
When you factor in the loss of draft picks and Int’l signing bonus money that it will cost the Braves to sign Gray, I’m actually surprised the Braves are making Gray their focus. I’ll be curious to see what kind of contract Gray gets and how much the Rays receive for Glasnow. Reading the tea leaves right now, I am guessing the Braves are hoping to get Gray on the low side of projections or that the Rays are asking for a lot in trade. .
Ask the Rays about how they signed Efflin who was great in 2023 and costed half what Glasnow will make in 2024. Ask them that……
Ok… What exactly is your point? Eflin pitched his best season in the Majors last year and was very underpaid as a result. How does that affect Glasnow?
Because the Rays think they can find the next Efflin. Duh.
Whether they do or don’t, they’ve already put Glasnow on the market. I still don’t see the point.
I think they’ll be more interest than you’d expect. These guys have egos, they all think they’ll be the ones who can get a full season out of him.
Joel P. – I really hope you weigh in when Glasnow is actually dealt. Maybe check out potential trade proposals on baseballtradevalues.com to get a sense of what I’m talking about. Rays won’t have any trouble moving Glasnow for a good package. Hell, just look at what Nola signed for today.
Nola signed for the same annual value that Glasnow makes.
Nola is better.
Yeah, but he signed for 7 years. I suspect the odds of a pitcher missing a full year due to injury over a 7 year span is fairly significant.
As for whether Nola is better, that’s debatable in my mind. He has been more durable to date and that may make him a better investment, but as far as who is the better pitcher, it’s pretty close. Glasnow is better than Gray though.
The odds are pretty good Glasnow is going to miss time in 2024. Because he misses time every year.
Glasnow isn’t reliable. Never pitched over 120 innings. That’s why he isn’t worth 25 million.
Jansen should be extended, i dont understand why not. Hes a slightly above league average bat with power who plays catcher and plays it well. I get hes been injuried but there all catcher type injuries broken fingers and wrist injuries mostly. Last year he had 1.6 war 17 HR 115 OPS+ in 86 games. The issue is hes averaged about 78 games, 250 PAs the last 3 years. Hes averaged 15 HRs in that time and had OPS+ of 105, 142 and 115 in each of those last 3 seasons. All that and average or better in all catching aspects how do you not sign that guy to an extension
Will he get more than the $10 million per year that McCann and Vazquez got? At 4/48 I don’t love it or hate it but would rather just use Kirk as primary C + cheap backup.
I think they don’t give him more than that.
Kirk’s body won’t hold up as the primary.
Can’t stay healthy. Can’t pay him starter money playing backup-like game totals. The time to extend Jansen was about 24 hours after the Jays lost the Moreno trade.
@ Murphy NFLD The right move would have been to get rid of jansen 2 years ago when he had real value But they didn’t.
Jansen is a often injured below average defender (Stop listening to Rogers Media about how great he is and look up his stats. They are below average to aweful) Sure his bat looks good on paper but IF you dig into it he is VERY streaky. Jansen has shown that the less he plays the better he plays so IF the Jays were going to keep him he would better serve as a third string catcher/pinch hitter/a couple rotation DH and nothing more. Question is how much you want to pay for that? He is projected at $5.7 mil for the coming year.
Conversly Kirk grades out as a above average defender (coming second in Gold Glove award) that has shown the more he plays (behind the plate) the better he plays.
I agree that extending him should be a priority for the Jays. It seemed like the reason they were comfortable trading Moreno is because they were committed to Jansen and Kirk for the foreseeable future. If they end up losing Jansen, it’ll only make that Moreno trade look even worse.
That makes no sense. You want to keep a catcher that is often injured and a below average defender because if you don’t it will make another trade look worse?
The Moreno trade was a pure fleecing of the Blue Jays and (from day one I said) Ross Atkins should have been fired for it.
To just say it is worse if they don’t resign Jansen is silly. If you say the whole scenario (including put to much faith in Jansen whether he walks or not) will show the front office incompetence, poor planing and terrible evaluation of what is and what is to come, then I am in.
Is the name ‘Rylan’ a dude name or a chick name ?
“The name Rylan is both a boy’s name and a girl’s name of English origin meaning “island meadow”.” – The Internet
Giants better swoop in and get that Glasnow.
I gotta say, I know why Oakland is doing it, but the A’s having to change their name would be a travesty. Even if they aren’t what they used to be, it would be a shame to see that name attached to a different franchise. It just wouldn’t be the same.
Las Vegas Aces just makes too much sense though.
The WNBA club has the name though.
And they aren’t the same. That’s the point. Moving to a new city means you’ve got a new team. Plain and simple. You should be forced to change your name. The A’s will be left behind in Oakland. It is what it is.
Do they get new players too? That would be great for the fans
People said the same when the Expos left Montreal for DC. If the A’s can win in Vegas, it’s water under the bridge. However, the late well-liked Ted Lerner and John Fisher are different breeds. Sorry Oakland fans.
To be fair, the Expos had much less history and their name was intrinsically linked to Montréal.
Instead of sharing Oracle Park with the Giants, the A’s should play at Candlestick.
Kezar Stadium would suffice.
Except there hasn’t been a ballpark at Candlestick for almost a decade now….
how does the city of Oakland think they own the Athletics name?
Exactly right, And why should they keep the name and pretend to be the same team with the same fans? It’s a fallacy. Any team that leaves the state should have to change their name.
F that Oakland mayor . Athletics name came from Philly to KC to Oakland , and moves to Vegas . . Oakland from mayor to fans , and media always trying to throw in a monkey wrench .
The Jays should try and lock Jansen up. Somewhere around 4/32 or 5/40 seems about right. That gives him and Kirk 3 more yrs together and if the Jays move on from Kirk, they have him to pair with someone else. He came up with the Jays, developed by them, knows the pitchers well and one of the core pieces with them. Not everyone can be a star, but, he can be a foundational piece for them for the next 5-6 years. Teams don’t win with players like him at its core.
This is wonderful news for the “As” I have said this two seasons ago that the As should move to either Portland Or or Las Vegas Nv.
Oakland has become the sewer of the west coast. Nobody can afford to attend a game there anymore. And crime in the area has increased around the ballpark that it’s to dangerous for people to enjoy a baseball game.
That would be a nice comment if it were true. Too bad so many make comments like this when they either have a stereotypical view from afar or have a local myopic view without knowing how lousy it is in other places.
bullsheet!
You are completely full of sheet!
Parts of LA are much worse than Oakland.
Numerous lawsuits against violent predators attacking fans in LA.
Hell’s Angels, if you’re out there, please pay a visit to John Fisher and Dave Kaval. Thank you in advance on behalf of real baseball fans everywhere
Rays always looking to cut payroll. How long before Ray’s trade Franco
Franco isn’t tradeable right now. If he returns to playing, I imagine he will be traded sometime around his 30th birthday if/when the Rays are approaching a 3-4 year reset/rebuild. The Rays won’t be able to extend him after his current 11 year deal expires, so a trade will be a distinct possibility.
no need to extend Jansen, Kirk isn’t the long-term solution but there will be better options available next winter
There are two problems with the Oakland Athletics situation. Problem number one is that major league baseball owners sold the team to a guy that wasn’t wealthy enough to own a major league, baseball team and run it properly. Fisher bought the team to keep himself financially afloat with the teams revenues. He has never made a secret about that. The second problem is that the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum sits on 150 acre piece of land that is now too valuable to the city and county to not be generating tax revenue. The Colosseum site is next to a major freeway, and is worth a fortune. I believe city and county officials made the decision long ago that they were never going to make money with John Fisher and so it would be best to just move on and let the team go. given John Fisher‘s track record I don’t blame the city and county for cutting him loose. he’s Las Vegas’s headache now and we all know that it is not going to turn out well.Kavel is already making excuses for why the team isn’t going to be spending money on premium players. in the new ballpark.
Golden State Warriors Owner, Joe Lacob, has a , STANDING OFFER FOR 10+ YEARS TO BUY THE A’s and build a New Stadium for them in the SF Bay Area with PRIVATE MONEY.
Lacob purchased the Golden State Warriors, turned them into a winning dynasty and built them a shiny new Arena with private funding in downtown San Francisco.
Lacob offered to take over the Howard Terminal Deal
OR he also offered to build a New A’s stadium in the Coliseum parking lot and then tear down the old Coliseum.
Lacob’s generous offers have been rejected by Bud Selig, by Rob Manfred AND BY JOHN FISCHER WHO IS NOT QUALIFIED FINANCIALLY AND/OR DOES NOT HAVE THE BUSINESS SAVVY TO SUCCESSFULLY OWN/OPERATE THE OAKLAND A’S.

Who’s running the show in Tampa? Can’t have such an expensive payroll. Now start cutting and get back to doing what you do best, finding cheap talent!
The Yankees are in Tampa. The Rays are not. So which show do you mean?
So what are they gonna do with that supposedly valuable 150 acres. No, the oakland roots soccer team in a 2nd tier league don’t count. They tried to lure a wnba team but the warriors overtook that opportunity. I doubt any major sports leagues consider oakland anymore. The oakland arena might continue to do events that the chase center may mot be able to accommodate. But oakland arena is also an old facility itself. They did have an AEW wrestling event a couple weeks ago there
Sell it to a commercial developer. Ironically, the city and county of San Francisco makes more money off of the Oakland Athletics than the city of Oakland. When teams play Oakland, they stay in San Francisco hotels. The money that is spent in Alameda County is at Ricky sports bar in San Leandro; which is a player favorite hang out. I met umpire Tim McClellan there one time after he worked the plate for a Dave Stewart game. Nice guy!
Don’t worry Danny. Jays haven’t looked to extend Bo Bichette either.
Actually “its_happening” they did extend Bo by buying out his arbitration years that is an extension of sorts. This season Bo will be making roughly 12 Mil..
They signed Bo for 9-10 years? Or are you saying “technically Bo signed an extension to nullify his arbitration years” argument. Well played, but we know what the real extension is, and that wasn’t it.
Actually “its_happening” they did sot of extend Bo by buying out his arbitration years. Bo will be making roughly 12 Mil this season.
Glasnow to the cubs for Alcantara
No, unless Tampa eats some of that contract
And why would the Rays have to eat some of the contract? Do you think a 1 year commitment to Glasnow at $25MM is out of line? Top pitchers go for $40MM plus on short term deals (and that’s without the QO draft pick compensation that Glas comes with). Long term deals like Nola’s average $25MM. If the Rays pay down $10MM of Glasnow’s contract, the asking price would be B.Brown and Alcantara.
Cause he has a terrible history of being injured, we can just sign someone for 25m and still have Alacantra…that’s why
Well, first off, the vast majority of Glasnow’s injuries were arm issues that required TJS to fix, which he and the Rays wanted to avoid for as long as possible. Now that he’s had the surgery, he probably won’t get injured all that much. As for just signing someone for $25MM, the Cubs won’t be able to sign a free agent of Glasnow’s caliber to a 1 year deal for $25MM. Frankly, they may not be able to sign anyone of Glasnow’s caliber. Nola is already off the market and Gray seems to be focused on the Cardinals and Braves.
I think Alcantara is probably outside the range for a Glasnow trade package, but I could see Ferris, Brown, and many others as part of a trade package.
It’s a fair trade, but I suspect the Rays would prefer pitching if they’re trading pitching. B.Brown plus 1-2 lesser players instead.
Brown/Alcantara together should get it done.
Yeah it would. Rays would jump all over that package.
That’s no happening
I think Brown alone gets you Glasnow. There’s value in only having Glasnow for a year at that rate. but his current pay rate isn’t that far below the market value. The real advantage is that you don’t have to give him that for 6 years and you get a QO opportunity. Back end top 100 guy should suffice for that.
Print it – Why?
So teams that want to get better should hold off trading with the Rays so the Rays have to keep a good player? Heaven forbid…
Learn how to use a freaking comma, Deeds. “…a method the club has frequently utilized in recent years when parting ways with players like Blake Snell, Chris Archer and, Evan Longoria.”
Straight-up wrong. Oxford comma comes before “and.” How do you mess this up? Fire this kid.
