The Yankees inquired after recently-dismissed Cubs manager David Ross regarding their bench coach opening, per Ken Rosenthal and Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. Per the duo, however, Ross has indicated that his preference is to manage again if he were to return to the dugout for the 2024 season. That would seemingly be an unlikely outcome, as following this morning’s news of Joe Espada being hired as manager in Houston the only remaining managerial openings are in Milwaukee and San Diego. Ross has not been connected to the Brewers as a potential managerial candidate, and is not viewed as a favorite for the position with the Padres despite some level of reported interest on the part of San Diego.
With Ross an unlikely candidate, Rosenthal and Kuty suggest that former Tigers and Angels manager Brad Ausmus, who was reportedly a candidate for the managerial gig in Houston before the club opted to promote Espada, could be a contender for the bench coach gig in the Bronx. Another potential candidate could be Yankees third base coach and former Mets manager Luis Rojas, though that hire would simply shift the hole on the big league coaching staff from the dugout to the third base line. The person hired to replace Mendoza will be the fourth to serve under manager Aaron Boone in the role, following not only Mendoza but also Phillies manager Rob Thomson and Dodgers bullpen coach Josh Bard.
More notes from around the AL East…
- Giants bullpen coach Andrew Bailey is expected to be a hot commodity on the coaching market this offseason, with Rosenthal and Kuty suggesting that he’s not only a candidate for the bench coach role with the Yankees but also the pitching coach role with both the Red Sox and Orioles. The duo suggest that Bailey could have a preference to return to the east coast after being denied permission by San Francisco to interview for a bench coach vacancy with the Mets back in 2022. The Giants hold no such power over Bailey at this point, as the 39-year-old is currently a free agent. Bailey pitched for both the Yankees and Red Sox during his big league career, which spanned eight seasons. Prior to his tenure as pitching coach in San Francisco, Bailey worked as a bullpen coach with the Angels under Ausmus during the 2019 season.
- The Rays have no plans to replace Peter Bendix as GM after Bendix departed the organization to take a job as president of baseball operations for the Marlins last week, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Topkin relays that there will be no external search for a new GM, with assistant GMs Will Cousins, Chanda Lawdermilk and Carlos Rodriguez all expected to take larger roles in the baseball operations department in the wake of Bendix’s exit. Senior adviser Jon Daniels, who previously lead baseball operations for the Rangers from 2005 to 2022, is also expected to take on a larger role in the Rays’ front office, acting as a mentor to the club’s group of assistant GMs. Bendix is the fifth high-ranking member of the Rays front office to depart to lead another baseball operations department, joining Andrew Friedman, Chaim Bloom, James Click, and Matt Arnold, though Bloom and Click are no longer in those roles.

very funny that no one wants to work for the yankees. they don’t see anything that’s wrong though, process is working perfectly
Blue Baron
Where does it say that no one wants to work for the Yankees other than in your comment?
There are plenty of people who would welcome the chance to work for any MLB team.
whyhayzee
I think you should say nothing works for the Yankees rather than no one. They’re pathetic.
Ronk325
A Red Sox fan calling the Yankees pathetic sure is rich
Viveleempireevil
Pathetic. With 27 pathetic titles. LOL!!!
Murphy NFLD
Yea im not a yankee fan but i read it as the big guys around this offseason want to be the manager and nothing else if they go to NY
boblowlaw2
Ahh, Thomson was never the bench coach under Boone. He interviewed for the job that went to Boone and when he didn’t get the job, he left. Might want to do a little fact checking there.
LordD99
IIRC, Yeah, Thomson was a member of the Yankees for over a quarter century, but he was a member of Girardi’s coaching staff for the decade he was there, serving two terms as his bench coach for Joe but not under Boone. When he didn’t get the manager’s job, that ended his time with the club. He got to eventually succeed Girardi as manager, but it was with the Phils.

Just yesterday he listed next year’s Sox starting rotation and totally missed Bello, stuff happens.

We NEED Ross to go to the Brewers. The rivalry with the Cubs would be great.
mad1
Why would the brewers hire Ross? He sucks and has cubs stank on him.
Blackouts are racist

he is not only mad he is mad1

Ross would be perfect for the Brew Crew!
nrd1138
….Says anyone who does not want to win. Any Cubs fan would think that he would be perfect, as it would more likely hurt the Brewers than help.
Fever Pitch Guy
Jake – Ross could turn them into the True Blue Dance Crew, as he is an excellent dancer.
Murphy NFLD
I never watched him but i dont know if i believe he sucks. If the preceved best manager is up for grabs then you go get him. Hes top 5 for sure from am industry view as far as guys that are currently in the game or are willing to work, maddon would be there aswell
rondon
Ross should take that bench coach job because he wasn’t ready for the manager job when the Cubs hired him. And in 4 years never really took a step forward. His bullpen mismanagement was a big part of why they faded in Sept.
tangerinepony
Ross was incompetent that’s why the Cubs screwed him over, Why would the brewers even consider him? The cubs have the brewers sloppy seconds now.. have fun with his reliance on playing matchups all the time
Blue Baron
@Buzzz Killington: “We NEED Ross to go to the Brewers.”
Maybe you need him to. I couldn’t care less, and neither do a lot of people outside of Wisconsin.

Balling retort. Sorry to hit a nerve, tough guy!

Blue Baron
No worries. Your opinion is unimportant to me, so no nerve for you to hit.
Valkyrie
I don’t comment often here. Too many junior GMs who think they know more than they do. But I’ll make an exception to say that your continuously belligerent posts just scream insecurity. About what? Well, I’m pretty sure we all know. Bet you drive a Corvette or a Hummer don’t you?
Blue Baron
Actually, I rarely drive. I have people do it for me.
But I suppose it’s OK for you to be belligerent toward me. How would you like me to respond to your personal attack?
agnes gooch
Andrew Bailey was a magician with the Giants pitching staff, this one hurts if he does indeed depart. Please stay Andrew!
foppert1
Yes. Doesn’t sound good at all.
agnes gooch
Hi foppert! I really hope this all works out
foppert1
You and me both ! I’m not sure whether to be excited or terrified.
barrybonds1994
Andrew Bailey was not the bullpen coach for the Giants, he was the Pitching coach
Rsox
Ross is not managing next season so taking the Yankees bench coach job would at least keep him the game for next season waiting to see what jobs may be available in ’25
Anthony maresca
This has Ross being the next Yankee manager once Boone is fired!
Wrian Washman
Hilarious if you think Boone is ever getting fired. If he wasn’t this year then it will never happen. Not like it’s his fault anyways. I need to change my name from Wrian Washman to Lrian Lashman 🙁

RE: TB not hiring a replacement GM—
Topkin relays that there will be no external search for a new GM, with assistant GMs Will Cousins, Chanda Lawdermilk and Carlos Rodriguez all expected to take larger roles in the baseball operations department
Ahh, yes. Don’t hire a replacement. Make three people do the same job so that nobody knows who to steal I mean hire away.
acoss13
Or it could be another petty reason, maybe they don’t hire a replacement to save money on that vacancy and spread the work among three assistant executives.
refereemn77
With the Rays, payroll considerations seem like a reasonable assumption.
GOAT Closer Esteban Yan
My theory is 2 out of the 3 are just decoy GMs that way teams only have a 1 in 3 chance of poaching the real GM.
solaris602
Let’s do more with less!!! Always looks good on paper, and then reality sets in.
Valkyrie
Your team didn’t make the postseason again this year huh?
Hemlock
Yeah, they didn’t. My star pitcher liked to eat too much chocolate and my centerfielder got distracted too much by butterflies flying past.
What does my son’s Little League team not making the playoffs have to do with what we are discussing here?
Trollfree
Hemlock – I think you are on to something. When Boston hired Bloom they thought they got the brains of the baseball operations group but THEY DIDN’T!!! Clearly, the person in charge can claim they made all the great decisions that TB has made since Bloom left so they got snatched. What if the real brains is next in line to get the job and ownership knows it so they choose to play a little 3 card monte with the assistant GMs to hide the real brains from the outside world?
Not a bad strategy. At some point the outside world is bound to find out who the actual brains of the decision making is. Creating a lotto draft like steal rather than a straight grab of the guy in charge is clever.
acoss13
David Ross, if he’s offered that bench coach job with the Yankees, take it man. Dude needs to learn about managing before taking on another stab at being a manager.
Hemlock
A bit of a generalization but I think people who have power and lose it rarely accept jobs with less power.
acoss13
Oh most definitely, but Rossy is going to have to eat some humble pie. I don’t see him getting a shot at managing any time soon. At least not an MLB team. Being a bench coach on an MLB team is probably as good as it gets for now.
Old York
Ross was an overrated player and an overhyped manager.

The Andrew Bailey situation is a perfect example of why Breslow MUST pick his own staff. He should pick a Manager and that manager should be tied closely to the new Pitching Coach. Hiring Bailey to work with Cora is like asking to stick a hot poker in his eye. He’s not going to want to do it. He’ll end up somewhere else unless Breslow offers a person who is close to Bailey the managerial job. Now that would make sense because Bailey is on the same page with Breslow with regards to pitching.
Fire Cora and get your new Manager, pitching coach and hitting coach set-up so the off season can begin before Thanksgiving.
all in the suit that you wear
Breslow said at his introductory press conference that Cora will manage in 2024. He also alluded to him being able fire people and bring in new people as he said attrition and bringing in new viewpoints can be good. So, Breslow probably agreed to Cora managing next season which is the last year on his contract and we will see what happens.
Trollfree
All – If you believe Cora is staying I don’t want to change that idea in your head based on the introductory press Conference.
Personally, If Cora isn’t fired then Breslow was a mistake. It’s that simple.
all in the suit that you wear
I forget exactly how Breslow said it, but he left no doubt that Cora will be the manager in 2024. He only said 2024, so I think we might see a change at manager eventually.
Trollfree
All – If in fact Breslow agreed to Cora, I will be surprised because he seems to be smart enough to dictate his terms to an ownership group who needs new direction after screwing up the last four years.
As an executive, you want to pick your own key players and not be forced into letting an unqualified guy stick around for one year UNLESS he already knows who he wants to manage the team and the person isn’t available until 2025. Then, tolerating an idiot like Cora makes him look very cooperative and ownership will put him in their good graces immediately.
It’s too bad if he has to waste a year because of politics. Red Sox Nation deserves better after having to tolerate Bloom for FOUR LONG YEARS!!!!
All the Cora discussion is moot if Breslow doesn’t go out and get talent and fix the defense. The team will limp into 5th place again without key changes to the defense and some significant pitching upgrades. GO big or GO HOME should be the 2024 motto.
all in the suit that you wear
I agree that Breslow needs to put his own people in place in order to succeed. I also agree that Breslow is smart enough to negotiate this ability for himself and it sounds like he has. However, it looks like he needed to agree to at least start 2024 with Cora as manager in order to get the CBO job. This is not ideal, but I don’t see it as a huge problem. At most, it is probably just a bump in the road.
Fever Pitch Guy
suit – We’ve both been saying the same thing for a month now!
It’s not my preference, but I have no issue with Breslow agreeing to inherit Cora and have him evaluated in 2024. If Cora does better under Breslow (and also as a lame duck), great! If not, he likely gets kicked upstairs and assumes the title that has already been discussed: “Executive Senior President Of Not Quite Ethical Methods To Gain A Competitive Advantage”.
