Yankees brass has yet to conduct their annual end-of-season press conference since the schedule concluded on October 1. General manager Brian Cashman is still expected to meet with reporters at some point before the offseason gets underway, although that still hasn’t been scheduled.
Some hints about the direction are beginning to emerge, however. Most notable is the future of Aaron Boone, who appears likely to return for a seventh season as manager. Andy Martino of SNY first reported last week the Yankees planned to retain Boone. Martino indicated that Boone would take part in meetings between organizational higher-ups scheduled for last week in Tampa. As part of a reader mailbag this morning, Brendan Kuty of the Athletic also shot down the possibility of the Yankees firing Boone.
Owner Hal Steinbrenner confirmed to Newsday’s Neil Best that Boone and Cashman were among a little over a dozen team officials participating in last week’s meetings, which spanned three days. As part of a panel, Steinbrenner told reporters those discussions got “heated at times” but called them “constructive” and “healthy.” The owner alluded to some pending changes in the organization’s operating philosophy but didn’t elaborate further beyond saying that “some (would be) more subtle than others.”
Martino reiterated this afternoon those changes aren’t expected to include a dismissal of Cashman or Boone. In a separate article at SNY, he noted the Yankees have yet to determine whether to make a public announcement about Boone’s return. The manager is already under contract for next season on a deal that also includes a ’25 club option. As a result, the Yankees could simply retain him without firmly addressing his future in a media session.
In any event, all signs point towards the organizational leadership remaining in place. That includes Steinbrenner, as the 53-year-old reaffirmed during the panel discussion that his family has no plans to sell the franchise (link via Ronald Blum of the Associated Press). The Steinbrenner family has owned the Yankees since 1973. Hal Steinbrenner pointed to a desire to continue involving his son, niece and nephews in ownership to a large extent moving forward but made clear there’s no especially notable ownership change coming in the near future.
While the Yankees seem primarily focused on internal operating procedures at the moment, the attention will turn back toward the roster in the coming weeks. The offseason begins in a little under a month, with the outfield, third base and starting rotation among the questions facing the front office.
South Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee is among the more intriguing free agents in a weak class for hitters. Kuty noted within today’s mailbag that the Yankees have scouted Lee during his time in the KBO, though the extent of their interest is unclear. The left-handed hitter turned 25 in August and is a career .340/.407/.491 hitter over parts of seven seasons with the Nexen/Kiwoom Heroes. He’s coming off a relative down year, posting a .318/.406/.455 line in 86 games before undergoing ankle surgery in July.

Hal. Doing it for the old man while desperately wanting the next generation to grow up and take this pain in the arse baseball team thing off his hands ?
Is that a reasonable take ?
YankeesBleacherCreature
He’s a 53 y.o. multi-billionaire. I doubt Hal is losing sleep at night over this past season. While the Yankees haven’t won recently, they’re still one of the top pro sports franchises in valuation every year.
Yanks4life22
He is definitely perturbed by it. They are making a boatload less and were one of the hardest hit during covid. I don’t think he will be quick to sell but the Yankee brand is losing its appeal and it’s clear by the comments that came out today that he is clueless when it comes to the business of an MLB team and being the one driving this franchise. It’s gone nothing but backwards since he took over. He is royally pissing off his clientele (fans) and Yankee stadium will have plenty of empty seats if they aren’t contenders each year. It’s happened before and will happen again if he doesn’t get the right person in there and leave everything in the hands of the professionals.
Tigers3232
The brand you claim as losing its appeal is valued at $7.1 Billion, up $1B from 2022.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Hal could not get out of bed until he’s 65, leave operations to Randy Levine and Cashman, and probably double his net worth by then.
Yanks4life22
Incorrect. The Yankee “brand” is not even worth $1 billion. It is still valued slightly under $1 billion at $970 million. Much of the value of the $7.1 billion lays in other forms such as almost $2 billion in stadium value, which was secretly bought and paid for by the taxpayers and is propped up by bonds in which the Yankees have to make payments on and things like their sports group becoming involved in other leagues and franchises. No doubt the Yankees are at their pinnacle and Hal is propping them up like a Fortune 500 company to milk every penny from it that he can. But eventually the Yankees need to perform or it all comes back to earth.
Tigers3232
forbes.com/teams/new-york-yankees/?sh=3533b08a4e6e
$7B is absolutely correct. All of that is part of the franchises value, that is kind of how it works, they come as a whole. During the 80’s and early 90’s the value kept climbing as they lost. Their value is going nowhere but up.
Yanks4life22
$7 billion is absolutely incorrect. Never said a word about the overall value of Yankees global enterprise, I clearly said Yankees brand. And based off the Forbes report that you just provided their brand is worth less than a billion. Thanks for doing the leg work for me!
Yanks4life22
Hence why there is such a debate about billionaires. There is a certain level of wealth that can be attained where it’s almost impossible to lose money. Someone like Bill Gates for example could make every wrong business decision from now until his death and he has so much money, so spread out, that his wealth would not be impacted and would continue to rise. Throughout history this level of wealth could only be lost to the likes of events of global meltdown, crash in currency, fall of empires or dissolution of the superpower countries to alter the course of said persons wealth.
Tigers3232
@Yanks4life I’m aware of what you said and it is wrong. The value of the Yankees is $7B. That is the amount the franchise would sell for, that is all that is really relevant when it cones to their value.
Yanks4life22
Once again I never said anything about the overall value of the franchise. I’m not sure why you are trying to put words in my mouth to make your point.
I wrote one short paragraph up there with 6 sentences. It’s really not hard to fact check it to see if I reference franchise value or not.

Hal seems very uninterested in the day-to-day of the team, as many Yankee fans have pointed out. I guess the hope is that his son or one of nieces and nephews is more interested and involved to take the reins from Hal, I mean he’s definitely trying not to be the guy, and get his other family to take an interest.

I don’t see how Cashman survives after next year if the Yankees do not make the playoffs again. So, that means expect trading the future and signing big name players. Yankee fans very possibly are about to enter what Giant fans felt in the final year of DG. I have said this since 2019, Yankees will never win a World Series as long as Cashman is the GM

DG is Dave Gettleman. In his final year with the Giants, he signed a ton of players and set the team back. Cashman is desperate. Desperate general managers do whatever they can to keep their job.

Would go a long way if Cashman could find a way to dump non-performing expensive contracts. Yes, Yanks would have to eat a lot of that cheese, and any prospect(s) they get back certainly will not be among another team’s Top 10, but the players would be gone and Boone wouldn’t have to deal with playing someone just because he’s earning big bucks. The old adding by subtraction adage.
JayRyder
Boone has to go. His antics are ridiculous and very self serving.
wtfCheeseheadChuck
I find his antics to be the opposite, his gripes are usually shared by the players and I see him as a manager who’s willing to take it on the shin to help mitigate overexposing his players and his players seem to LOVE him and you’ve got to imagine/reason that has to be if not number one, a big reason he’s keeping his job.
sfes
I love watching his Jomboy lip reading clips. Boone lets it loose when he’s pissed. Quite frankly something needs to be done about these awful umpires and the way some of them intentionally provoke players and coaches. They put on a show and make the game about them and their pride sometimes.
wtfCheeseheadChuck
You would have to imagine MLB plays a mega part in what you’re describing, I mean guys get longer suspensions for “allegations” than they do for punching each other in the face, on the field….. which could kill, in front of the children….. at any rate it’s all about the $ for MLB so adding another drama filled aspect to the game well, I can’t see it as unintentional, and ultimately and unfortunately until MLB quits trying to appeal to non baseball fans these types of non baseball related shenanigans will continue to make it harder for baseball fans to watch…..
Blue Baron
@wtfCheeseheadChuck: The expression actually is taking it on the CHIN.
wtfCheeseheadChuck
Yeah but sometimes repeated blows to the shin can be just as hard if not harder to stand in and accept than a chin shot, plus a chin shot can be more serious, i equate it like this chin=knockout, shin=needling, reasonable?
Blue Baron
OK

His antics are fine, his bullpen management is not
wtfCheeseheadChuck
There’s a “take” with legs, don’t watch much yanks but his BP management and usage style seems to have been proven archaic a while back, he needs to take C. Counsel’s fall/winter course, they are both at home…..
Blue Baron

People seem so quick to imagine a world where counsell bails on all the young talent in Mil for the money in NY and I am just not seeing it, perhaps I will but until I do I can’t imagine it happening, the crew are loaded in the farm with heigh ceiling talent, not super deep I’ll admit, but another couple Hader esque trades and you’ve got a competitive MLB team with a monster farm, apparently word is counsell is just sweating out cheap ownership and he knows he has upper hand.
Blue Baron
Of course you’re not seeing it, as you’re probably a Brewers fan and don’t want to see or consider it.
But don’t you wonder why, if he’s so sure that he wants to stay, a new contract hasn’t already been quietly worked out and signed, especially as it would prevent all this speculation?
None of us know his true feelings, but to play devil’s advocate, the Mets can offer a competitive team with a strong farm and the wealthiest, most generous ownership in the game.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Counsell will be managing at Citi Field next year. Cohen will give him a deal that sets up him and his family for life. How many of us would turn that down, even if it meant leaving your hometown for a few years?
Also, I don’t buy Stearns sitting on his palms and allowing 2024 to be a transition year. New Yorkers demand the best, and Stearns will do his best to give them the best.
wtfCheeseheadChuck
I do “wonder” as we all are because we don’t know, but there’s been multiple reports out stating it’s a money issue and that starts to make sense when u consider Crews ownership is just barely a step up financially from the Rays, word is council wants around double what he’d been making and of course there’s going to be things that take time for a situation like that to be ironed out, that all makes sense, everybody on here saying this/that will or is going to happen is ludicrous especially considering there’s ZERO connection between Counsell and NY, Stearns reportedly grew up a Mets fan in NY, there’s his connection but Counsell grew up a Crew fan in WI so why is he so eager to leave? He knew the small market restraints when he took the job and he’s trying to sweat out ownership for money and control in writing, that isn’t 100% confirmed however it’s at least sensible, people on here spewing this/that and when it doesn’t happen the way they say it’s just on to the next speculation without ANY basis, get some facts and something that ties this/that together somewhere somehow and I’ll be happy to hear it, u say “I’m not seeing it” so show me, show me your basis of facts and I’ll be happy to adhere to the reality it paints but until then don’t try convincing yourselves by convincing others, that’s all I’m “seeing” here
Blue Baron
I’m not trying to convince anyone. Just playing devil’s advocate.
wtfCheeseheadChuck
Feel free to inform ahead you’re “playing” devils advocate because if u don’t mention it Bible thumping STRYPER singing cheesehead homers such as myself will simply just see you as the devil himself ha
Blue Baron
That just makes you strange. No skin off my ashtabula.

The news that Woodruff will have shoulder surgery and miss next season won’t help convince Counsell to stay.

Nah that bails him out for the early playoff exits. Doesn’t bail him out this season. He’s gone all or nothing on the three true outcomes for more than a decade and it’s been proven it’s not enough. Need a new face and new philosophy but we won’t get it.

A sharp contrast to the north where everyone but the manager gets canned.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
I don’t put a ton of stock in the team manager position- as in, I know they impact the team’s strategy, the in game strategy, I know they have some say in planning for the season, roster construction, etc. but at the end of the day it is ownership and the GM who make roster decisions that the team manager then has to work with.
Boone can’t magically make IKF a more well rounded player, he can’t magically heal Stanton’s hip, he can’t magically make Severino the pitcher he was 5 years ago, etc.
And I don’t think Boone was the guy pushing to bring Hicks back too early from sheath surgery.
Not sure who exactly is to blame here, but I think Cashman needs to stop trying to be his version of Billy Beane and to be the guy he was in the late 90’s, early 00’s and yes, even going into 2009- but the free agent market class will be thin this year and a lot of those big free agents last couple of years who got mega deals have been a mixed bag since then and a lot of the ones who worked out were huge question marks- every team ultimately has a Rodon-type contract on it. It’s part of the game.
I just think we need to move away from reclamation and “high upside” roster decisions, like a never had the potential people thought he might have eventually IKF and an aging, injured Donaldson and we should focus more on guys like.. well, I’m not sure what will be out there that will be worth it this off season and clearly a ton of our prospects don’t truly have what it takes, like Oswaldo, but Volpe seems to be the real deal, so there’s that…
Ugh… this isn’t gonna get fixed in 2024
JoeBrady
like a never had the potential people thought he might have eventually IKF
========================
IKF played reasonably well in 2022. This issue was a Cashman debacle. Once Volpe was designated to be the next Jeter, they should’ve moved IKF. His glove covers his weak bat at SS, but once you start playing him at 3rd and in the OF, he simply doesn’t hit enough for those positions.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Aaron Nola will be out there, and so will Jeff Montgomery. Both would be huge additions for the Yankees and they should be able to outbid the Phillies and Texas.
Doubt the Phillies will bring back Rhys Hoskins who missed all year with a torn ACL. He would be a big help too at 1B and/or DH.
There are answers if Hal wants to pursue them.
wtfCheeseheadChuck
I’m assuming you’re referring to Jordan Montgomery not Jeff, it was about a year ago the yanks traded Montgomery for a player they’ve since DFad, so unlikely they’ll be trying to give him a massive deal to return…..
Gasu1
The best teams often consist of a homegrown core, a few trades for guys hitting their primes, and a small number of top grade FAs. Dynasty type teams are lucky enough to have the core within 2-3 years in age.
SeibuLionsNPB
Do we know if Lee has a preference on his destination? Whether it is East or West Coast? I feel like any number of teams would love to take a chance on him. The Padres, Giants, Mets, and Yankees all have money burning their pockets.
rocky7
Exactly how many free agents do you think the Padres are in on…no doubt there are teams other than the Yankees on Lee but the Padres…..exactly how many outfielders at ridiculous money contracts can and will they afford trying to improve from 82 wins and looking at the Dodgers ass again as far as the NL West….
Simm
It’s fairly well known the padres are one of the favorites to sign lee. His contract will not be as large as some thing. Kbo guys are far from sure things, less sure the Japanese players.
JoeBrady
He’s a good fit for SD, but a great fit for the NYY. Lee might prefer the West Coast, but the NYY could drive his price up a whole lot. They need a CF to put Judge back in RF, and are desperate for a leadoff hitter. They had a horrible 77 sOPS+ last year batting 1st, and four guys got 100+ PAs batting 1st. Their OBP was .306 hitting ahead of Judge.
Lee should be a must-sign for them.
NYMETSHEA
Mets probably shouldn’t be involved in Lee’s bidding as there are more pressing needs than the outfield. Not that there won’t be additions there, but less prominent. Particularly with Nimmo, Marte (hopefully healthy), and DJ Stewart for the short term with McNeil getting reps out there in left field. Long term, McNeil will need to move out there should their middle infield prospects (like Acuna) move up.
Mets need to fill three rotation spots after Senga and Quintana. Mets should allocate one spot for competition between Peterson, Megill, and cheapish depth signings. That leaves two spots to fill and I nominate Yoshinobu Yamamoto with another starter (mid rotation type).
Mets can turn their attention and remaining budget on bullpen. Hader would be a dream, and could be more affordable should Ottavino decline the option
JoeBrady
The Mets are a mess. It’s hard to even figure out what their priorities should be. Stewart and Marte are poor options.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Joe Far from it. They maintain a core of good position players and a restocked farm system. The dead money for Verlander and Scherzer are sunk costs for this season and the next. Cohen will continue to spend and spread the money out a little bit more.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Watching Corey Seager in the postseason I see it as nearly malpractice that New York didn’t sign him (did they even try? Did he just not want to play in NY?). He would have been a perfect fit with that short right field porch.
rocky7
The Yankees were committed to either Volpe or Peraza at SS which is why they looked beyond Seager….and with the possibility that Gleyber was still at 2nd, it just didn’t make any sense even though he was pretty much a known performance….
YankeesBleacherCreature
And if Stanton showed some life, it’s justified to not sign Seager.
Dr2022
We are still waiting for that sign of life, unfortunately. I suspect the same will be next year.
Mikenmn
It’s an indicator of how irrelevant the Yankees are becoming to see how few comments there are. The Yankees need a fresh start. It doesn’t matter if Boone stays, it matters that a new front office is brought in. Yankees fans (like me) can survive a couple of rebuilding years. What we don;’t want to see is stasis…cycling in older, frailer players with their best years past them.
solaris602
With a relatively weak free agent class this winter it’s hard to imagine what moves NYY could make to change their fortunes. Matt Chapman? Maybe, but they need more than that. Ohtani? That’s another Judge-sized contract. I don’t envy Cashman this off-season.
Mikenmn
Good observation. I don’t think the Yankees can be fixed in the short run. They need a multi-year plan, with incremental improvement each year.
C Yards Jeff
Hal comes across as an owner that doesn’t like change. More than complacent to keep the model as is and to keep the same leadership in place running the model as is. And quite frankly, when players are healthy, it gives my Os fits. If you guys insist on wanting change, ok by me!
LordD99
Boone is a symptom of the illness, but he’s not the disease.
billysbballz
Jung Hoo Lee and Yamamoto is all they need to do via free agency. Than use some rule 5 prospects and any prospects they don’t feel have an open position long term to acquire some left handed bullpen arms. I would stay clear of Hader especially if he thinks his value is close to 100 million.
Endar Malkovich
3 root problems with the yankees.
1. The fans buy a broken product and refuse to boycott. Those types of fans are slaves.
2. Hal Steinbrenner has the final say so the Yankees failures are his responsibility. He is leader of the ship and he’s done a horrible job in terms of championships. Rings are what fans desire, monetary value us what Hal desires. Nothing changes until he changes or is gone.
3. Cashman has always been a bum. He could never do what Gene Michael did and always had the monkey on his back that he bought players instead of developed them. Cashman is not a baseball man; meaning he doesn’t have the instincts to see untapped potential in players, hence why he thinks he can rely on analytics and do what Billy Beane did. Cashman is always trying to duplicate others because he lacks confidence in his instinctual abilities. Nothing changes until he is gone.
