Rangers associate manager Will Venable declined an opportunity to interview for the Mets’ managerial vacancy, he told Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The former MLB outfielder had also drawn interest from the Guardians.
MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported last week that Venable intended to remain in Arlington, however. Venable went on record to confirm that, telling Sherman he’s “not pursuing any other jobs.” He expressed his comfort working with Texas general manager Chris Young and skipper Bruce Bochy.
Venable has long been regarded as a future manager. The Princeton graduate played nine years in the big leagues. He has since spent six seasons on an MLB coaching staff, working with the Cubs and Red Sox before joining Texas last winter. Venable has interviewed for manager jobs in prior offseasons but clearly doesn’t intend to take on such a position in 2024.
There hasn’t been a ton of detail on the Mets’ search since the team moved on from Buck Showalter three weeks ago. First-year baseball operations leader David Stearns has said only that the club planned to cast a wide net. The Athletic’s Will Sammon reported this week that New York would go outside the organization for its new hire. There’s been plenty of speculation about Craig Counsell leaving Milwaukee to rejoin Stearns in Queens, but the Mets won’t be able to speak with Counsell until the start of next month under the terms of his contract with the Brewers.

Good. Not a good fit. 2 words re: the next Mets manager; RON WASHINGTON!!
Blue Baron
How do you know?
brooklyn62
Rumor has it, BB!

Word on the street.

I think Wash is a great coach. But his decision to leave Nelson Cruz in RF in the 9th inning of game 6 of a WS is so indefensible I’m not sure I would hire him as a manager. Would absolutely want him on my coaching staff though, just not the managers seat.
Jordan09
When you figure out to not take sports serious any more and stop being a homer. You’ll see that the grass is always greener on the other side

It’s the internet. Everyone knows everything by default.

brooklyn62;
Mr. Washington has been the best managerial candidate out there for the last 3 years.
He’s now 71 years-old. He’s a part of one of the best organizations in MLB, and can stick with what he does best – working with infielders and maybe some baserunners / stealers / bunters.
At his age to take on the burdens of managing which today primarily consists of coordinating the coaching staff to work with the FO people – almost as an administrator – may well be less appealing then being hands-on with some of the players, which is what he enjoys doing and excels at. While being paid more money is nice, at age 71 the man surely has enough money – it’s job satisfaction most people that age are after. Being able to do what you want to do and continuing to work with colleagues you’ve been working with for years is far more comfortable than starting over with a new coaching staff and getting them to work together. In short, there are few people over 70 that want to embark on something that will be a 24/7/365 job that will take 2-3 years before all the pieces fit smoothly together.

@brooklyn62 Ron Washington shouldn’t even be in baseball right now, hes lucky hes not banned. You can’t be doing coke while being a manager. I don’t want him anywhere near the Mets
VonPurpleHayes
The entire 86 team was doing coke regularly. Maybe it works for the Mets.
brooklyn62
Yes, they weren’t having success with Pepsi, so they switched to coke.
Sunday Lasagna
@LFG The guy made a mistake and owned up to it. Integrity and humility are two great traits of leaders. People make mistakes. Ron Washington is a great coach, he teaches well and has elevated the game of many players.

“The Princeton Graduate” lol
They fawn over players who got into Ivy League colleges by being good players. This is what got Texas into the mess they are in right now. Here’s an anecdote: We had this stock trading competition, and we were competing against a bunch of no name colleges and then ours (JHU) and Columbia University. Guess where the JHU/Columbia teams ranked? All were out of the top 100. Point: If college education doesn’t even help that much in a related field, who in the right mind hires baseball managers based on where they went for a year to major in Economics? It’s irrelevant. If only my employers were this obsessed with college education. Lol
laynestaley2002
“The mess they are in right now”??? I’m a StL fan, but I can think of 26 other teams that wish they were in the same mess right now.
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
The Rangers have a high payroll, and I think they hut the luxury tax number this year. They have a lot of guys wirh career years, and I just don’t see CY being competent enough to maintain this performance with Chapman, Stratton, Montgomery (one of 2 reliable starters atm), Garver, Smith, and Grossman all leaving. I fear he will offer Martin Perez some crazy amount and blow that cash on starting pitching and then refuse to trade for or sign relivers. The bullpen had a below 50% save rate after they added Chapman and Stratton. I don’t trust him. Luck + high payroll increases = winning
If that luck regresses and the payroll stays the same, this team probably is a wild card team next year, with Houston unlikely to lose Altuve, Alvarez, and Brantley for this long next season due to injuries.
LFGMets (Metsin7) #InEpplerIsGone!!!!
@In Seager/Bauer We Trust you are 100% right in your assessment of Chris Young. Guys like Garcia, Lowe, Carter, Duran, Dunning were all there already before he got there. He overpaid for Semien. Honestly I think he overpaid Seager despite him having such a great year, you don’t give an injury prone player 300 mil+. He came into the season with one of the worst bullpens in the league. I mean, how do you expect to compete when your “big 3” relievers are Will Smith, Leclerc, and Sborz…., an idiot could have told you that wouldnt work. Jon Gray has been mediocre, Heaney has been mediocre and injured as usual. He QO’d Perez when everyone knew he wasnt any good. Eovaldi was a good signing even though he got hurt. Signed injury prone Degrom to a megadeal. Traded for Scherzer. I like his Chapman trade and his Bochy hire thats about it. Chris Young is the most overated GM in the game next to Ellias
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
deGrom still has many years left, plus his 20 MM team option. I think medical guys were way too cautious here. Beyond that, though, Semien is deadweight. He is probably the worst 7 WAR player in MLB history. Now, the big 3 were Leclerc, Jonathan Hernandez, and Will Smith/Brock Burke, but yeah. I agree that even an idiot (someone from Cornell, for instance) could have seen that the bullpen was a mess dragging down the rest of the club.
Hired Gun 23
He is going to replace Boch, when the time comes. So why bother to look elsewhere…
Blue Baron
@Seager/Bauer: Johns Hopkins? I remember my alma mater playing some fierce men’s lacrosse matches with them.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
What mess is Texas in right now? Last I checked they are in the ALCS and haven’t been eliminated yet. They have some young exciting players and they have the willingness to spend crazy money on impact free agents. This Rangers team is likely set up for good things for the next half decade. And your stock trading example proves nothing because picking stocks is like going to the casino and any yutz can get lucky at any time.
SweetBabyRayKingsThickThighs
Their BP is one giant poop sandwich
tangerinepony
The rangers are not in a mess!! Lol Prior to Bochy coming on this year the rangers were a mess 2021 and 2022 They’ve turned things around despite a crap bullpen. They’ll be better next year
Jordan09
Mlb is rigged to the core. Certain players are giving “special” bats at certain times. Also pitchers are starting to say the balls are feeling funny. That’s why the Rangers and the MLB needed Max for game 3. He’s part of the boys club and he’ll do what they’ll say
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Hey Jordan, can you elaborate more about players given special bats, or balls feeling funny? Or if you can provide some sources for this? (I have heard about different balls being used, like at Yankee Stadium for Aaron Judge’s record HR season. And that 2019 there was a different ball being used that produced more homeruns overall.)
Missippi_has_3Ks
. He’s Ven-unable to coach the Mets because he knows they’re trash
Blue Baron
What an amazingly dumb comment.
Missippi_has_3Ks
Thank you thank you.
rct
I think he gets a point for even stretching for something as dumb as “Ven-unable”.
Tomas7
How about Curtis Granderson? He went to U of Illinois and knows baseball and New York well; and has an excellent personality that might do well in the clubhouse. That’s casting the net wide, that is if Counsel isn’t all but hired.
ctbronx7
I think Granderson likes broadcasting. He has the skills, the look, the promise of bigger and better assignments in the next few years. Why risk that for the stress — and lower odds of success— of being a manager?
websoulsurfer
Will declined to interview with ANYONE. Not just the Mets.
outinleftfield
Came here to say exactly that. He is the heir apparent for Bochy.

Sounds like he was not Will Amenable
Old York
Good move. Who wants to be part of that dumpster fire that is the lolMets.
rct
The job has an owner willing to spend, a well-regarded PBO in Stearns, a good core, a good farm system, and the job is sure to pay several million dollars a year. And in a disaster of a season, they were still only six games under .500. As an added bonus, there’s the possibility of you collecting checks at home if/when you get fired before your contract is up.
The job isn’t for everyone, but to answer your (silly) question: a lot of people would want to manage the Mets.
Blue Baron
In case you haven’t noticed, Old York isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.
#lolOldYork
This one belongs to the Reds
Smart man.
Domingo111
I think the rangers are really set up nicely for next year.
If you add langford to that lineup it could be even more dominant even if seager and semien regress a little.
I think they need another starter and a good reliever though as they can’t really rely on some of the older injured guys to come back and give them a lot of innings.
Mac Attack
Who the hell would want to manage the Mets. Thank God that Melvin went to the Giants. The most overrated manager since Buck Showalter.
