As the Red Sox continue to search for a new head of baseball operations after firing Chaim Bloom last month, names continue to emerge as potential candidates. One of the names receiving the most attention as things stand is former Astros GM James Click, who won the World Series with the club last year before parting ways with the organization last offseason.
A pursuit of Click is not without its complications, however. MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo, while confirming Boston’s interest in Click for their top job, discusses some of the potential roadblocks that could leave Click’s interest in the role in doubt. Perhaps most notably, Cotillo points out the longtime friendship Click has with Bloom, noting that Bloom is the one who pushed the Rays to hire Click for his first job in a big league front office. While Cotillo makes clear that it seems unlikely Bloom would actively push Click away from interviewing for the position, he does note that the longstanding relationship between the two could give Click unique insight to the potential pitfalls of the position, particularly after Bloom’s sudden exit toward the end of the season.
Beyond Click’s relationship with Bloom, Cotillo notes a number of similarities between the Red Sox and Astros organizational structures that could turn him away from interest in Boston’s top job. After all, Click’s relationship with the Astros deteriorated in part thanks to his relationships with the club’s influential, strong-willed manager in Dusty Baker, and hands-on owner Jim Crane. Meanwhile, Red Sox manager Alex Cora is known to have a voice in Red Sox front office, including playing a role in the hiring process for the club’s next GM, and Cotillo notes that Red Sox ownership has had philosophical disputes with the front office across several regimes over the past decade.
Of course, Click is far from the only known candidate for the position. In terms of other external candidates, reports indicated earlier today that Twins GM Thad Levine, former Pirates GM Neal Huntington, and Cubs assistant GM Craig Breslow have all already interviewed for the role. That being said, the club has also involved internal candidates in their search. Assistant GM Eddie Romero is known to have previously interviewed for the position, with some reporting describing him as the “internal favorite.” According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, however, Romero is not the only internal candidate to be interviewed with both assistant GM Mike Groopman and VP of amateur scouting & player development Paul Toboni also having sat down for interviews with the organization. Cotillo adds that Toboni in particular is viewed as a “potential dark horse” in the running for Boston’s top job.
One internal candidate who won’t be interviewing for the position is assistant GM Raquel Ferreira, who declined the opportunity to interview for the position. As relayed by Cotillo, Ferreira cited family reasons in her decision not to interview for the club’s top job, and will remain in her current role in the organization. Ferreira has previously interviewed for top baseball operations jobs in other organizations, and did not close the door on pursuing a top front office job in the future, noting that “things could be different for me a year or two from now.”

The sad truth is Bloom created Click. Look it up. Click was given the job in Tampa and Bloom was involved.
Could be Bloom 2.0.
BrianStrowman9
Bloom and click are like-minded thinkers from a baseball perspective. Click already dealt with an owner that didn’t give him free run of his FO. I can’t imagine why Boston would go there.
I think if Click lands a GM job outside of Boston that it’s pretty likely that Bloom is one of top his assistants. A Click hiring seems like you want to stay the course but appease the fans with a new body in that role.
acell10
I wonder how many people stumping for Click will change their mind once they hear about his tight relationship with bloom…
Missippi_has_3Ks
If it doesn’t bloom with Click, we might get a Bloom-Click-Boom scenario

acel – I don’t think their friendship means Click would be Bloom 2.0 especially considering he had so much success in Houston. The only question is whether or not he would accept an interview invitation. Most people who think Click would do a good job also believe he wouldn’t be interested, time will tell. I want Click but I think it will be Romero.

Re-signing Brantley —
Odorizzi —
Montero +++
Diaz +
Maton +
Verlander +
Just what I tried to do with Kim Ng, trying to separate fact from fiction.
Overall, this is better than what I thought it was. Odorizzi and Brantley really didn’t work out very well. The Montero trade got Graveman as well, and is a HR. Both Diaz & Maton were acquired for Straw, another HR. They already had Verlander, so it isn’t a ++, but Click still had to commit to him.
I was initially put off by his draft, but then remembered they had to forfeit their #1/2 in 2020 and 2021, and his 2022 looks good.
To be honest, I haven’t liked any of their choices so far. I’d give Breslow a chat as well. The Cubs have done well the past couple of years, and he has a degree from Yale in stuff I cannot even spell.
Or just have some fun and make Click the POBO and Breslow the GM.
BrianStrowman9
I think in Houston’s situation that Brantley and Verlander were probably strongly influenced by Crane despite what Click wanted or didn’t want to do.
But pretty hard to evaluate a GM overall if you start trying to piece out moves and put them on someone else.
JoeBrady
I don’t don’t do that, and never will. I see some Ng supporters claiming that all the bad moves were the responsibility of someone else. And see that with a lot of other GMs as well. If you like the person, then all the bad moves were the fault of owner interference
I try to judge based on the date of hire.
BrianStrowman9
I agree with that approach. It’s widely reported that Verlander and Crane would meet and essentially negotiate directly. That’s a W for Click’s resume but how much say he had in that is tough.
BaseballisLife
With Ng you don’t have to take the fan’s word for it. Jeter and Denbo said that she was not involved in decision making. She made recommendations. Jeter made decisions. As he had said, often the opposite of her recommendations. Denbo said she was not involved in the draft at all.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – Click doesn’t want it, he officially turned it down.
No love for The Brock Star?
How about Mike Groupon? Surely they could save money by hiring him.

Missippi_has_3Ks
Oh yeah you know him?
zacharydmanprin
Yes. He used to write for Baseball Prospectus and I met him many times at their events and we have stayed in touch over the years. Why is it so hard to believe that he’s a nice guy?
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Or because Chaim Bloom is his buddy…
Otto371
No mention of Luhnow yet??? I was expecting to see his name by now, at least for an interview.
LordD99
He sued the Astros and badmouthed Manfred and MLB. There’s a better chance you’ll be a MLB GM than we ever see Luhnow again.
BaseballisLife
Luhnow now owns two soccer teams, a short which growing up in Mexico was his first love. One team in Spain and one in Mexico. The team in Spain is nearing promotion to the top league. He is not taking a demotion to come back to baseball.
BaseballisLife
A sport which was his first love. Voice to text so bad.

“Meanwhile, Red Sox manager Alex Cora is known to have a voice in Red Sox front office, including playing a role in the hiring process for the club’s next GM…”
He shouldn’t.
Rsox
No he shouldn’t. This is the exact same situation the Angels had with Scioscia have a bigger say on player moves than whoever the GM was at the moment
Poolhalljunkies
Just curious..why shouldnt he? I mean if ownership wants to run it that way why should we care who has a say its henrys money? Unless one of you is a mlb gm here we arent aware of so long as they start winning who cares? The only thing i care about is get someone so ownership can tell that person who to sign etc lol
Rsox
Because the manager having more of a say than his bosses completely disrupts the hierarchy chain of command and also causes division in the front office. Player A may be a better fit for the team than player B but player B is the one the Manager wants and thats the one that gets signed. When it doesn’t work out its the upper management that shoulders the blame and pays the price
Trollfree
Pool – You can’t be serious!!! Have you missed everything that’s happened since 2017? Did you ever watch the bench warmer play ball? He was lazy as he’s been as a manager. He never had any skills, just like as a manager and MOST IMPORTANTLY – The man has absolutely no integrity.
Is that clear enough for WHY he shouldn’t be part of the process or even in baseball?
deweybelongsinthehall
He may not have cheated as a player (because he hardly played) but we know he cheated as a coach. You really want him in the front office? Suppose he delivers. How many accusations will be made?
BaseballisLife
They can’t get someone BECAUSE Cora is involved.
deweybelongsinthehall
He must have used his old Apple watch for spying on a bedroom. Does anyone else have a better explanation for Cora’s apparent power? Farrell one in his first year but was fired after 17 and he got the team to the playoffs in 16 and 17.
GASoxFan
Henry, Kennedy, Bloom, and Cora have collectively screwed up the Red Sox so much that we’ve got more people refusing to interview for the open positions than have interviewed so far.
Thats enough of an indictment against the group as you need to know that what ought to be a premier destination and a crown jewel of MLB has become so undesirable that talented execs don’t even want to hear about the opportunities and ask questions about roles in the organization.
One or two people is normal when you’re talking family/relocation issues, or, being happy where they are.
When INTERNAL candidates say ‘no thanks, not interested’ as well then you REALLY have to wonder about how toxic things have become.
I think either Kennedy or Cora need to go, emphasis on the latter. Then we may see a gradual recovery for the club.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – I agree, the diplomacy being used to decline interviews is quite evident.
So in the past Raquel was interested in pursuing higher positions with other teams, and she could very well do so in the future, but right now she has no interest in a job change? Yeah right …..
GASoxFan
Don’t forget fever, Raquel was interested in taking the job in Boston and interviewed before bloom was hired last time around. Now she says no, it isn’t the right time?
Maybe it’s not the right time because Cora is still there, and, trying to steer the ship himself. Maybe the ‘in a couple years’ is timed to coincide with when Cora’s deal is up.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – Remember how back in high school, one of your buddies had a girlfriend who was a real witch and all of the other guys in the group couldn’t stand her … so they always made themselves unavailable whenever the buddy wanted to bring the girlfriend along to parties etc? At some point your buddy realized his girlfriend ain’t all that, and breaks up with her.
Henry is the buddy, and Cora is the girlfriend.
We can only hope Henry will “wake up” and ditch Cora before the team goes through yet another four years of failure.
JoeBrady
He shouldn’t, but then, who on the RS should? There is probably some merit to having someone who knows all the players that other GMs have acquired.
But that said, inviting a subordinate to have too much say is opening up a world of downside risk.
GASoxFan
One benefit to a fresh exec coming in is you get a new and unbiased interpretation as to your farmhands and staff, without prior relationships, friendships, and expectations clouding the decision making process.
One of cora’s worst traits is playing favorites and advocating not based on merit, but on other factors. Thats how you get guys who either really need a change of scenery, or, be cut loose entirely, but keep getting chance after chance after unearned chance to the detriment of the team.
It can and does happen to any team, but, it’s amplified if you’ve got a guy like Cora not only hurting you by favoritism in the lineup, but then trying to steer the front office too?
Raquel has been in the front office as a VP since 2014. I’m fairly confident any prospects worth anything still in the system came in under her watch and she can discuss them competently, not to mention others on staff equally long
its_happening
Who on the RS should? Huh?
Cora should have no say on the matter. The top people in the Red Sox organization who do the hire are the ones who should be in-charge, not Cora.
JoeBrady
Cora should not make the decision. But is there anything wrong about asking what he thought of the Straw trade, for example?
GASoxFan
Joe, I would say yes. It’s not cora’s place, not his lane so to speak, and, theres really just two outcomes:
1) he acts as a ‘yes’ man and brings nothing to the table because he just offers praise.
2) he criticizes, and in effect, undermines the gm/pbo. It creates bad feelings and friction in the organization. It’s OK to have an opinion, but, you keep it to yourself and trust that your boss’ boss sees the good, and the bad, in what’s going on and will act accordingly to address it. Meanwhile, you worry about your own job.
If Cora spent half as much time worrying about his own handling of drills, practices, staff, lineups, and player rotation as he did what others in the organization were up to we wouldn’t have had multiple years where he screwed up spring training the same way leading to players not being ready at season start, or, for example, rotated Kiki out of a ss he had no business playing before an astronomical level of errors racked up that doubtless cost the team games.

I would hire Click. He helped build the Astros into what they are today. The one that needs to be on a short leash is Cora, he made some real bad moves this year. Cora is no tactician!
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
And he’s good friends with Bloom… I pass.
Trollfree
Thec – Your argument is that you want Click for being part of the most corrupt franchise in baseball? That’s an odd perspective.
Cora doesn’t need a leash he needs a ticket out of town.
Tactician? – He has no clue what that word means!!!
If he did, he’s say he is one since he led the biggest cheating scandal in history and got away with it!!!
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Schwarber.

Gary, we could us him. Why don’t we ever get players like that?

We did. Bloom traded for him back when everyone hated Schwarber.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – Bob was being totally sarcastic, but what did you mean by everyone hated Schwarber? Or are you being sarcastic as well?
MafiaBass
NEAL HUNTINGTON!? They can’t be that inept. They just can’t.
Old York
I’d argue that the Red Sox should seriously consider James Click for their head of baseball operations role. His history with Chaim Bloom could be a valuable asset, as they’re already familiar with each other’s working styles and could potentially avoid the issues that plagued Bloom’s tenure. Furthermore, Click’s experience with strong personalities in Houston might actually be a strength, given the known assertiveness of Alex Cora and the philosophical disputes between Red Sox ownership and the front office in the past. Sometimes, bringing in someone who understands the challenges you face can be an advantage rather than a liability.
Trollfree
Old York = No offense but their is absolutely no logic in your argument.
You want a guy because he’s familiar with Bloom’s lack of knowledge on how to be a GM and that’s a plus? NOPE.
Click is part of the problem not part of the solution..
We don’t need his baggage.
Cora should just be eliminated. Not consulted with, not allowed to manage just eliminated.
Old York
I disagree that somehow Bloom had a lack of knowledge. If that were the case, why was he hired in the first place. Let’s put things into perspective with less emotion.
Fever Pitch Guy
Old – He was hired in the first place because Henry threw a temper tantrum and ASSumed anyone in a high position with the Rays must be good.
Neander wasn’t available, so Bloom was the guy selected.
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
So, you’re saying that ownership has no clue how to run a ballclub and rely on the assumption that the Rays guys must be smart. If so, then I doubt Boston sees another championship for another 80+ years.
GASoxFan
Old – youre more on target than i think you meant to be. if you look at Boston since Henry took the reins, really theres a repeating pattern. Part of it is he still want to be associated with his own moneyball-esque innovation.
Look at the pattern:
In ’02 he buys the team. Epstein was hired in ’01, before Henry. Epstein quit for the first time before the ’06 season, but returned 2 mlnths later. Then, another 5 years later theo quits again, in 2011. Cherington came in 2011, only to leave in 2015 when Dombrowski came in 2015 effectively demoting/removing the decision making power in favor of DD as PBO. Then, as we all know, DD was fired in 2019, followed by bloom. Bloom made it from 2019 until 2023.
So if you look at it, in two decades of sample size, the shelf life of a Boston GM is about 4-5 years before a rift and blow out with Henry and Co. What’s more, each and every one of those tenures brought home a WS trophy aside from Bloom, so, you’ve got to ask yourself, why wasn’t it ever good enough to have any of those guys stay around longer?
It points to instability at the very top, and a very volatile management structure. It’s not just high expectations, other clubs have those too, but they don’t result in the type of turnover Boston sees.
And that doesn’t even get into manager turnover.
Fever Pitch Guy
Old – Like I said long ago, Click doesn’t want the job. I would be surprised if Ng wants it either.
I’m hoping for Breslow, but think it will be Romero.
Old York
@Fever Pitch Guy
I’ll trust your expertise and hope you get your man.
