The Red Sox’s search for a new general manager to replace Chaim Bloom might be picking up steam. As , the team has already interviewed at least three high-profile external candidates for the position: Twins GM Thad Levine, Cubs assistant GM Craig Breslow, and former Pirates GM Neal Huntington. reports for the Boston Globe
On Monday, Rob Bradford of WEEI reported that Huntington and Levine were under consideration, while Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggested Breslow as another candidate. However, it was unclear if the interest was mutual. Several rumored contenders have already declined to interview with the Red Sox, including former Rangers president of baseball operations Jon Daniels, former Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill, Phillies GM Sam Fuld, and Dodgers GM Brandon Gomes. Another rumored candidate, Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen, shut down any speculation that he would take a job in Boston when he signed a multi-year extension with Arizona.
Levine, Breslow, and Huntington join Red Sox executive VP and assistant general manager Eddie Romero Jr. as candidates known to have interviewed, although Speier suggests that Romero isn’t the only internal candidate to take a meeting about the position. Other rumored internal candidates include Romero’s fellow assistant GMs, Raquel Ferreira and Mike Groopman, along with other VPs in the organization, such as Ben Crockett, Mike Rikard, and Gus Quattlebaum.
Of the four names known to have interviewed, Levine is the only one currently working as a general manager, but even so, he isn’t the top decision-maker in the Twins organization. He works under president of baseball operations Derek Falvey, who, funnily enough, declined an interview with the Red Sox himself (per Chad Jennings of The Athletic). While Levine is surely enjoying his team’s recent success, he might enjoy the chance to be the chief baseball executive for a new organization, especially one that typically runs a much higher payroll than Minnesota. Similarly, Huntington might be tempted by the Red Sox’s budget after so many years with the low-spending Pirates and Guardians. Meanwhile, Breslow and Romero are presumably interested in the chance to run their own front office.
Earlier this month, Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy expressed that he isn’t working under a deadline to hire a new GM. More specifically, he would not commit to having a new executive in place by the annual general managers meetings in early November. He told reporters (including Chris Cotillo of MassLive), “We plan to take our time. We plan to be very deliberate… We’re not going to let any deadline or timeline put constraints on the process.”
In other words, while the Red Sox seem to have accelerated their search in recent days, they could still take a while to name a new GM. If nothing else, they will presumably do their due diligence and consider brand-new candidate Kim Ng before making a decision. The team has not yet expressed interest in the former Marlins GM, but given her success with Miami this season and her apparent desire to run her own front office, she could be a good fit for the role.
FatChance65
The big winner here is Dave Dombrowski. His team has a game tonight, while the Red Sox are in utter turmoil as no one wants the job, and Alex Cora is off somewhere saying “we have to be better.”
deweybelongsinthehall
He should be saying “we’d be better off without me”. Hoping Breslow gets the job. Nothing wrong with Eddie Romero but I’d prefer someone with a brain who has played the game.
FatChance65
Agree on Breslow. I feel bad for the poor soul who gets the job, though. They will be led by John Henry. And why does Alex Cora get a say in the process??? That’s like the employee interviewing his boss prior to hire. That’s messed up.
Fever Pitch Guy
Fat – I’d be fine with Breslow as well.
As for Cora, not to defend the guy but Henry doesn’t want him butting heads with the POBO like Cora did with Bloom.
I’m pretty sure Cora will provide input, but will not be part of the decisionmaking.
FatChance65
Fever—I don’t know… maybe it’s just me, but I have an issue with Cora having any input on his next boss. I wish I had that luxury. Maybe my viewpoint is skewed because I don’t like Cora. Imagine if they hire Kim Ng…would Cora’s ego get in the way because he would have to answer to a female boss? Some guys can’t handle that. However, male or female, your boss is your boss and the position deserves respect.

I know. End of career. Journeyman infielder. Like Cora…
Poolhalljunkies
Sounds like what Boston fans said about the tigers when they hired Dave..insert brad ausmus for alex cora.
lvd2340
Dombrowski is the quick fix win now guy but leaves organizations in shambles with bad contracts and depleted farm systems. Just ask the Marlins and Tigers and now the Sox.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I agree, he’s not perfect. Phillies will have their window close at some point and may be in debt.
Fever Pitch Guy
lvd – You mean the Marlins who won a WS in 2003 with nearly all Dave’s players that he left behind?
Or you mean the Red Sox with Crawford, Bello, Duran, Casas, Rafaela and Houck who are all Dave’s guys?
Ahh man this gets so boring having to educate people over and over again.
deweybelongsinthehall
Detroit? The owner forced moves trying to win a title before he died.
User 3180623956
Fever- it’s amazing how easily manipulated people are. They just repeat the lies told to them by others then it snowballs into the “truth”.
Dombrowski really didn’t trade away a single prospect that amounted to anything and in return built a WS championship team. He knew who to keep and they’re all staring to show up in the MLB.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dewey – Thank you, I got lazy and stopped after 2 teams.
Pads Fans
Dombrowski left the Marlins with a top 5 farm system. With Josh Beckett, Miguel Cabrera, and Adrian Gonzalez topping the list of their prospects. They won the WS in 2003, so he was doing something right. The Tigers are another story. The Red Sox got a ring just months before Henry fired Dombrowski. One of the worst decisions in recent GM history.
HighOnPineTar
Ivd2340 you couldn’t be more wrong on Dombrowski, he left the Red Sox with a great farm system and the Marlins an even greater one.
He was fired because he was going to extend Mookie Betts and John Henry refused to allow that.
all in the suit that you wear
Pine Tar: Could be. Maybe John Henry didn’t trust Dombrowski to negotiate with Mookie after his horrible Chris Sale deal. I think the narrative that Dombrowski gutted the Red Sox farm system comes from the significant drop in farm system ranking while he was there. I think Dombrowski could have restocked the farm system if given more time.
Pads Fans
Top ranked farm system or a WS ring? Difficult choice. NOT!!!
all in the suit that you wear
Exactly. I’m happy Dombrowski went all in and won the World Series.

It’s amazing how an average GM can look when the league bends over backwards to accommodate mediocrity.
Why not let Oakland and KC in while we’re at it?
I mean, if the Phillies are such a juggernaut, do they just screw around for the regular season? Do they enjoy sweating it out for a wild card? Or are they just not that good, but when you take a dozen random games anyone is either the 27 Yankees or the worst team of all time?
deweybelongsinthehall
The game changed with the wild card and then expansion of it. The goal now is to develop a team with pitching that gets you to the dance.
teachdad46
The Phillies hardly sweated it out for the WC. They finished with a six game lead over the 2nd WC team, and an eight game lead over the 4th team in the ‘race’.
Big Smoke
Maybe those candidates want the POBO/GM job in Miami instead? Lol who am I kidding that isn’t happening
BasedBall
Boston should’ve spent big on slugging DH types like Philly. Boston signed Story, and the Phils signed Trea to play SS. That’s what happens when you sign cheap players no one else wanted.
iverbure
Story wasn’t cheap.
deweybelongsinthehall
Not a fair comparison. The Sox were not spending until they reset the taxes. That was then, this is now.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I would also debate that “no one wanted Story.” When healthy, he is a very solid player. If he stayed healthy, he probably could’ve gotten close to Bogaert’s numbers.
deweybelongsinthehall
He just can stay healthy which was known in CO.
JoeBrady
He just can stay healthy which was known in CO.
=========================
He was one of the healthiest players in BB while with CO.
Pads Fans
Story played 142 games to 157 games in every full season in Colorado and 59 in 2020. He was not injury plagued there. It wasn’t until he got to Boston that his injury woes started.
User 3180623956
JD- Boston was literally his only choice and he didn’t even want to come here but had to because no one else wanted him.
Kevin 23
His career numbers away from the launching pad in Colorado are abysmal, he was never to come close to Boegart’s numbers even if healthy!
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Bogaerts hit .240 last year. That’s certainly manageable. Bogaerts was solid but way overrated for what he is being paid.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Wow, I was way off. Bogaerts hit .285. My bad for not looking when I posted. I still think Story can hit in that realm when healthy.
I hate the “Coors Field” effect excuse. So many people use it loosely and overlook the player. It’s truly the lamest excuse. If Coors helps one hitter, it certainly helps all.
Kevin 23
“Lamest excuse”? Go look at Story’s numbers at home vs road when he played for Colorado and tell me it’s a “lame excuse”.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I’m just saying that any player who comes out of Coors gets the same excuse every time. It rarely ever applies and you still have to be a good hitter to hit the ball.
Story is fine. Most people are just annoyed because Bloom signed him. And that gives them more reason to dislike the deal.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Also, he was a good player before going to Coors. He rose up through the Minors as a good hitter. Splits are one thing, but he’s also had inconsistent playing time with injuries. People literally have said the same thing with DJ Lemahieu and Matt Holliday and both were fine.
Fenway is a hitters park too, and being a guy who can hit to all fields, Trevor will be fine if he doesn’t get injured, but that’s another whole story.
The Coors Field effect exists as much for one player as it does for all.
JoeBrady
It rarely ever applies
======================
Some of the Coors effect is offset by the fact that players have to adjust to hitting on the road when the ball starts breaking better. If there was a big effect, it would hit the pitchers as well. Over the past three seasons, the H/A OPS for Rox pitchers:
.753/.782
.812/.758
.870/.821
The discrepancy for Fenway over the past three years is 34 points.
Kevin 23
No, most people are annoyed that he has hit ..218, 18hrs, .689ops over 2 years with the Red Sox while making $24 million/year. Sad thing is, those numbers are actually BETTER than his career numbers away from Coors field, and EVERYBODY with a baseball IQ over 20 knew that he was going to struggle away from Coors, but Bloom signed him anyway.
Pads Fans
Bogaerts put up 5+ WAR his last few seasons in Boston and 4.4 WAR for San Diego. At $25.5 million AAV he has been a bargain so far.
At $24 million AAV, after 2 seasons. the Story contract has been just awful for the Red Sox. It would take him putting up 4 straight 3.8 WAR seasons just for the Red Sox to break even on the deal. Its certainly possible for him to do that. Story has the talent. I really like Story so pulling for him.
Pads Fans
Go look at every players home road splits regardless of home park. Few players are better on the road and most have huge home road splits.
Look at all the players that left Coors and hit just as well in their new park.
Pads Fans
No one with a baseball IQ thought that. People that know baseball realize that almost all players hit better at home.
For all MLB players to have even a single at bat, the difference was they hit 8% better at home this season. 104 OPS+ at home to 96 OPS+ on the road. For players with a qualifying number of at bats they hit 12% better at home.
Like wRC+ better? Then its 7% better at home for all players and 13% better for players with a qualifying number of at bats.
Players hit better anywhere they are more comfortable.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
You sure EVERYONE? That’s a pretty big generalization for people with baseball IT’S. I think he will be fine. Small sample size, injuries are the bigger issue.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
In fact, the MLB Network experts kept saying Story was going to tear up Fenway. He hasn’t yet, but that’s as close to MLB experts as one can get.
Kevin 23
True, players are usually better at home, but saying “most have huge home road splits” is just complete and utter NONSENSE!
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Didn’t you say he had home/road splits? I’m losing you there…
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
They have Devers, Casas and Yoshida. How many more DHs would you like them to have?

Reports indicated Giants wanted Story. They either got lucky, or they came up roses by sticking to their number and being prepared to miss out.

DBH1969
At this point Boston will interview the pizza delivery guy just so they can say they had an outside candidate.
bostonbob
DBH, So you mean I still have a chance?
bostonbob
Old York, Sox ownership are all liberals. Ng has for the Marlins into the playoff, she deserves a shot. The Sox have other priorities on their agenda concerning their next gym. What they are, who knows? But rest assured Cora has his say.
DBH1969
@bostonbob. You have just as much chance as anyone else not named Romero. This is all smoke and mirrors, man. Like I already posted, O’Halloran will do the job of pobo, Romero will be the gm. This was decided right before Bloom was tossed.
As for Ng, she won’t take the job. I think she would do well LEADING the FO, but she just quit a job because Miami wants to hire a POBO. She did a great job and was rewarded with a two fisted punch to the gut… no extension and, oh, here is your new boss.
Why the heck would she walk into the same situation with the manager being your boss on top of that?
You can have the job for the year, but come next off-season, Henry is bringing his ax to work. Kennedy and Cora are gone bext year. It is LL/Valentine all over again.
TJECK109
Wait…. Huntington got a GM interview? Guy never had the courage to make a move when the Pirates needed on and then in desperation to save his job he went out and made the ridiculous Archer trade. He shouldn’t be trusted with any talent decisions
Grumpofm
Never thought I’d stick up for Huntington, but he also brought the pirates into the playoffs after 20 losing seasons and had them in the playoffs 3 straight years. Was executive of the year once. Why not interview and see if he fits? It doesn’t hurt to not offer a job after an interview.
kc38
Maybe big market teams should stop hiring small market gms. Both can exist and be successful but I think once you’ve worked in a certain environment so long it’s hard to change your way of thinking. Bloom would be a great leader in MIA I believe. But lord some of these names coming out for this interview process are rough….
acoss13
Also, no one seems to want the job. The candidates are seeing a difficult situation and probably don’t want that headache.
bostonbob
Across, this right there is ,I believe, the issue. Big money team, that doesn’t spend like they used to, while owners keep looking for their next shiny toy.
acoss13
Bostonbob,
Exactly, especially since this team is expected to be competitive every year, and has plenty of money in the coffers to spend. This is why the fanbase is so upset with the team. The tipping point might have been ownership forcing Bloom to trade Mookie, it was a dumb decision then, and now even more so.
Old York
The Red Sox’s hunt for a new general manager comes across as a series of questionable choices and missed opportunities. The fact that several rumored contenders, such as Jon Daniels and Michael Hill, declined interviews with the Red Sox hints at deeper issues within the organization that deter top talent. When even the current GM of the Twins, Thad Levine, is exploring other options, it raises concerns about the Red Sox’s appeal as a workplace. Furthermore, the list of internal candidates lacks diversity and a fresh perspective, indicating a potential reluctance to embrace change and innovation.
The slow and drawn-out approach to hiring a new GM, as expressed by the team’s president and CEO Sam Kennedy, seems at odds with the urgency of making significant changes. Given the Red Sox’s underwhelming performance in recent years, one would expect a more proactive approach to rebuilding and reinvigorating the franchise. Kim Ng, the highly respected former Marlins GM, should be on the radar, but the team’s apparent lack of interest in her raises questions about their commitment to making the necessary transformative moves. The Red Sox appear to be missing the mark in their quest to revitalize the front office and revive their competitive edge.
teachdad46
On what are you basing “…..the team’s apparent lack of interest in her….” ?
Old York
@teachdad46
The statement “the team’s apparent lack of interest in her” is based on the information provided in the article. It mentions that Kim Ng, the former Marlins GM, has not been explicitly expressed as a candidate of interest by the Red Sox in the article. While her success with the Marlins and her desire to run her own front office might make her a suitable candidate, the article does not suggest that the Red Sox have actively pursued her or expressed interest in her as a potential GM candidate. This inference is drawn from the absence of information regarding the Red Sox’s interest in Kim Ng in the article.
Poolhalljunkies
Hi Old York perhaps there is no news on Kim Ng connected with the red sox or any other team because she was technically under contract with the Marlins until Monday when she declined her option..i think its fair to allow interested teams a day to make a phone call.then leak it to the media.i know we all live in a world of instant gratification but give em a minute lol

What has Kim Ng ever accomplished? She’s an average GM at best.

Why isn’t anyone from that trio biologically qualified to be a GM?
william-2
Out of these three external interviews, does anyone have a clear thought as to which of these they feel is perfect, and why? It will be hard to convince any quality experienced person to “accept” the position of GM for the Sox where in the past people would attempt to convince ownership they were worthy of it. Just curious if anyone has reason to believe any of these are a diamond in the rough. I’ll save my opinion.

Something I don’t full understand is internal hires in sports front office. I suppose there is an element of traditional office feel that you want to maintain, but it would seem like if you hiring at such a high lvl position, you would want a more dramatic change than “how it’s being done”.
Bright Side
Work for a team that has an established manager, who played a role getting your would be predecessor fired, not to mention the intense media scrutiny and high expectations? Yep, that’s for me.
