Every Rays offseason inevitably leads to trade rumors about their higher-salaried players, whether it’s players getting increasingly expensive through their arbitration years or players entering more expensive years of their current contracts. The same should be true this winter, as Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes that Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot “seem likely to be in trade discussions” as the Rays try both manage their budget and maintain a competitive roster.
It isn’t a shock to see either player potentially shopped, especially since Tampa reportedly offered Margot to other teams as recently as the trade deadline. Margot also drew some trade buzz during the 2021-22 offseason since 2022 was his final year of salary arbitration, but the Rays not only avoided an arb hearing by agreeing to a salary with Margot for 2022, but they also inked him to a two-year, $19MM extension with a $12MM club option for 2025.
Glasnow’s own extension with the Rays only seemed to create more trade speculation, rather than security about his future in St. Petersburg. The right-hander signed his two-year, $30.35MM extension in August 2022, just over a year after the right-hander underwent a Tommy John surgery that cost him almost the entire 2022 season. The deal broke down as a $5.35MM salary in 2023 (essentially what Glasnow would’ve earned anyway via arbitration salary) and then a whopping $25MM for 2024.
Essentially since the moment that deal was announced, many have expected that the Rays would look to trade Glasnow before that $25MM bill came due. That dollar figure might not scare off many teams as a one-year splurge, given how Glasnow returned to mostly good health and delivered a strong season. An oblique strain cost Glasnow the first two months of the 2023 campaign, but he posted a 3.53 ERA, 51.2% grounder rate, and an elite 33.4% strikeout rate over 120 innings.
Of course, the Rays themselves might view $25MM as a good investment for a top-of-the-rotation arm, especially given the other injury problems in Tampa Bay’s rotation. Glasnow and Zach Eflin project as the Rays’ top two pitchers, with Taj Bradley penciled into the rotation for at least the start of the season, Shane Baz returning from Tommy John surgery, Drew Rasmussen (elbow brace surgery) and Jeffrey Springs (TJ surgery) both expected back at midseason, and Shane McClanahan very likely missing the year altogether due to yet another TJ procedure. Given how all these injuries hampered the Rays this year, Tampa might feel comfortable in just keeping Glasnow and then getting draft compensation back next winter via the qualifying offer, or perhaps even a midseason trade if the Rays are out of the race.
If Glasnow is retained and the Rays looked to trim payroll elsewhere, moving Margot seems like a natural place to start, as he is owed $12MM in 2024 ($10MM salary, $2MM buyout of his 2025 option). Margot generally been a slightly below-average hitter during his eight MLB seasons, with his .264/.310/.376 slash line over 336 plate appearances in 2023 basically matching his career numbers. Margot’s speed and defense have helped his value beyond the middling offense, though the public metrics indicated a dropoff in his center field glovework in 2023, even if his right field numbers were still solid. Margot’s playing time has also been limited by some injuries over the last two years, as well as the Rays’ natural penchant for outfield platoons.
Perhaps especially if Tampa Bay feels Margot has lost a step or two defensively, he might be an expendable piece of a crowded Rays outfield. Josh Lowe and Jose Siri could take over the center field platoon, and prospects like Kameron Misner or Chandler Simpson might also be nearing their big league debuts. Margot’s trade market might be somewhat limited by his 2023 performance, though with a thin free agent market for position players, any outfield help might get some extra interest this particular winter.
Turning from possible Rays trades to some moves that didn’t happen, Tampa Bay was known to have interest in Shohei Ohtani this past summer, even though it seemed like the Angels had little to no interest in actually dealing the two-way star. That didn’t stop several teams from floating offers, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that Tampa offered Junior Caminero and two other top-10 prospects in exchange for the final two months of Ohtani’s 2023 season.
It would’ve been a big price for a rental player, yet not out of line for a player of Ohtani’s stature and unique all-around ability. Of course, no trade happened, and the Rays probably don’t have many regrets considering how Ohtani’s partial UCL tear prematurely ended his pitching season in August, and an oblique strain then ended his season altogether a couple of weeks later.
pohle
dropping a bombshell at the end, that ohtani could have been traded for caminero +
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
I’m glad the Angels didn’t get to pillage a team’s farm system. That would have been a huge overpay. On a separate note, I was shocked that the headline had Ohtani in it, until I read it was via trade, not free agency.

It’s the rays they could have to give up every top 30 prospect they have and in two years they’ll end up with multiple top 100 prospects

The Rays talent evaluation is spot on
deweybelongsinthehall
It’s also the way they use their non-superstarbplwyers. Everyone knows they get to the playoffs but then quietly end their season rather quickly.
padam
They were just in the WS in 2020. And if they hadn’t lost all of their top pitchers to injury, I’d suspect they may not have bounced out so early this year, either.
deweybelongsinthehall
2020 doesn’t count in my and many other’s opinions. Something is deserved for winning but not A WS trophy or rings in my view. Baseball is a marathon and playing 37% of the scheduke is not a marathon.

The Angels are the worst ran franchise in all of sports. I hope Artie spends the rest of his life in jail for the fraud he tried to pull on Anaheim. I hope he chokes on a chicken bone for the trash he has turned this franchise into. Just die old man.
Big whiffa
At any given time – there’s an interchangeable title of “who’s the worst small market team” is it the Rockies or pirates or reds ect and it’s always based on the fanchises recent most terrible move.
Enter the Angels, they are atop of their podium as the undisputed worst large market team in baseball. And probably professional sports as it’s very difficult to think any other franchise could be ran so terrible as the angels run this one !
So u passed on a top 10 prospect in baseball plus 2 other top prospects from one of the top farm systems to keep ohtani when u were all but eliminated from playoffs while knowing he won’t resign. Absolutely terrible ! If you are angels fan – it’s time to find a new team to root for !

Did the pirates win the archer trade?
PiratesFan1981
Negative. The Rays still got some talent in Meadows trade. Baz is still a wait and see while Glasnow has been good when healthy. Calling him a top rotation piece is a bit of a reach. Guy still struggles with command and that does hurt his stock to some degree. But Rays are known to make guys look like superstars when they are only AAAA player. I just pray the Pirates don’t try to make a deal for Glasnow and get fleeced by the Rays again
Hemlock
The Archer trade isn’t even as bad as it seemed. Glasnow has been injured a lot. Meadows had a good 2019 and then after was only ok. Baz is recovering from his newy installed Tommy. The sports media sure loves a good story on a supposed trade heist.
Now…
Meadows —> Paredes
Ouch.
User 4245925809
Archer was a all hype guy from the start. His attitude, on and off the mound gained him lots of press clippings, not to mention being admonished by David Ortiz for acting like a spoiled child more than an athlete.
Writers tend to focus on that lot. probably because they feed that monster they themselves must have.. Material and are dependent upon them.
As for Margot having trade value with Tampa? Due 10 in 2024 and another 2m buyout for 2025. This is a guy who several years back stopped being even an average CF, kind of like Pillar syndrome. Once elite at the position, now closer to poor and couple that with his bat is close to JBJ’s? JBJ can still play premium defense at CF and had for league min. Why would anyone pay Margot 12m, plus anything to acquire him when he’s already DFA material?
Suncoastdome
I always thought that the Archer trade was a mandate from Bob Nutting. It sure didn’t feel like a Neal Huntington trade.
Bob probably saw Chris doing some Post Season TV work and was influenced.
Yeah, I think the rays may need to either pay down MM’s contract in a deal or package him with someone.,
Glas at 25M for 2024? 25M on a 80M-85M total payroll? Hmm, the Rays need the arms but the 25M does seem to be disproportionate to overall payroll. Maybe they let things play out until deadline to see where they are.and progress of returning SP’s

Before we re-grade the trade, we need to factor in the expected return on Glasgow.
Sideline Redwine
lol “some talent”…did you see what Paredes did this year? Or are you stuck in a silo somewhere?
My assumption is the original post was sarcasm or maybe I am giving him too much credit. The Rays *fleeced” the Pirates on that trade, it wasn’t even close, and everyone knows it. The trade will keep giving and giving too…Paredes will continue to rake until he gets too expensive, the Rays will trade him for a young player who will then come over and rake…that is the cycle.
tamparaysfan
If you count the trade tree Meadows brought back Peredes in a trade who just had another great season, Baz still has like 5 yrs of control I believe, and Glasnow should bring back a pretty good return as well this offseason.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Going by that trade tree extension the Red Sox were the real wieners because they got Bronson Arroyo from the Pirates from leftover change in the Rico Petrocelli deal after they fleeced the Brewers for George Scott and Bernie Carbo for Tom Poquette and Marty Pattin. George Scott was Patton who they got in the Dom DiMaggio trade who was picked up from fellow countryman Marco Polo in one of the spice trades. Winner: Red Socks
deweybelongsinthehall
What are you talking about? Scott returned to Boston with Carbo for Cooper who was a borderline HOF player.
astrosrule
Negative. I don’t think the Pirates under Cherington will get fleeced much. They remind me of the Orioles maybe 2 years ago. Pitt will be good soon.

Someone beat me to it but sure! The Pirates totally won that trade! Look at all the years Archer pitched for them and took them to the playoffs. Totally solid. Glasnow and Meadows didn’t help take the Rays to the world series or anything, and certainly did not help to three straight playoff appearances (for Glas, that would be five). Then they traded Meadows for a bum–what’s his name, Isaac Paredes? Terrible hitter. Just awful. What a waste that trade was. Baz is a pup, hasn’t even reached arbitration years yet. But let’s just consider him a bust too.
Just hoping you are being sarcastic.

How could the pirates have possibly won this trade? If I ever hear someone say “there are no stupid questions”, I am going to reference “Did the pirates win the archer trade”
mlb1225
No, but it looks better than it did in 2019.
LaBellaVita
It may look better than it did in 2020, but given that the line/tree/whatever of this trade continues to benefit, the tally for each side is incomplete. The Pirates side is complete: 1.5 fWAR. The Rays side is: Meadows (6.0) + Glasnow (9.8) + Baz (0.3) + Paredes (7.7) minus Meadows with Detroit (-0.5), which is approximately 24.3 fWAR.
tbcoolguy
Anyone who is still asking (or has ever asked) this question obviously never watched Chris Archer pitch in the extended time leading up to his trade. He was awful. God awful. I was never so happy to see a player go than I was when Archer was dealt.
We could have just released him and come out in a better spot. The fact that any team was willing to take him off our hands was a miracle and the fact we got 3 players who produced or are continuing to produce for us is icing on the cake. Archer didn’t even pitch this year while Glasnow is still putting in solid, above average innings. Baz is injured so we’ll see when he gets back. Meadows, as previously mentioned, resulted in Paredes who was one of our most valuable players this year.
This trade, from the Pirates side (obviously), is still one of the dumbest front office decisions made in the past 10-20 years solely because Archer’s ceiling was buried underground and anyone who spent 15 minutes actually watching him pitch knew it. The only thing dumber is the narritave claiming otherwise.
“Did the pirates win the archer trade?”

GOAT Closer Esteban Yan
I’m on the fence about trading Glasnow. I know they’ll inevitably need as many arms as possible (like they do every season), yet I feel like Glasnow’s trade value could be as good as it gets considering his injury history. $25 mil could be used to unearth the next Efflin on top of whatever they get via trade.
kc38
Glasnow needs to go. Very thin FA Market and coming off a genuinely healthy year. Im taking the prospects and running
Mendoza Line 215
They get no good prospects for Glasgow.Who wants to pay $25M for a pitcher with a glass arm who whines about the checking of foreign substances on his hand.
He is a good pitcher but one who is very fragile and not the top of the rotation pitcher that many thought that he would be.
There are a lot of more durable good free agent pitchers this year who have not nearly had the physical problems that he has had.
GOAT Closer Esteban Yan
@Mendoza – I agree that GMs should be weary of trading for Glasnow for all the reasons you mentioned. However, it just takes a team like the Rangers, who handed out that ridiculous contract to DeGrom despite everyone and their mother knowing he’d be on the IL sooner than later, to bite. If the free agent market is as frantic as last offseason, I wouldn’t be shocked if they find a sucker that overpays.
Mendoza Line 215
GOAT- I am old fashioned enough to ask the same question that I think you would ask-Is he worth it?
It amazes me that the Rays of all people would guess that someone would take him off their hands at $25M per year.
Even if they do,though,I doubt that anyone would give them any real prospects in the trade.
I do not think any GM’s would be dumb enough to do that, but I do not doubt that there are owners who are dumb enough and more importantly rich enough to do so.
JoeBrady
As a RS fan, I would take him at $25M, and I am sure there are at least ten teams like that. I’d consider this a low-risk $25M. If he has the same 10-7 3.53, I’d be slightly disappointed, but not egregiously so. And he could do better, given that the innings he missed were oblique related.
And a real good chance that we’d get a draft pick assuming a QO.
Mendoza Line 215
Joe- As a fan,you would not be paying him.
I do not doubt what you say though about the number of teams who would pay him since it isn’t just a one year deal.
The question is if you were a GM would you give them one or two of your top ten prospects, and assuming that you have a good farm system with highly rated players?
Mendoza Line 215
Joe- since it is just a one year deal
GOAT Closer Esteban Yan
Mendoza – they probably won’t convince teams to give up a couple of high end prospects (although if any team could, it would be the Rays). The more likely scenario is they’ll center a deal around an MLB-ready reclamation project they’ll want to take a chance on (like Paredes for Meadows, Siri from Houston, etc.).
Harry074
Tigers need to get Glasgow. Top of rotation stater should not cost a lot in prospects.
PaulyMidwest
Inevitable that they trade Glashow and he sucks for his next team while some prospect w have never heard of turns in a top ten cy young finish year. It is how Tampa does it.

Good lord… the Rays have half a high-end rotation out with UCL surgeries.

Unfortunately for you Rays fans, get used to another 20-30 years of dealing their best players before they get paid.

I can see them almost giving Glasnow away this offseason. Not only is Glasnow an incredibly risky pitcher to acquire, but other teams will also know the Rays probably won’t be able to afford that contract (without it hurting the team in a different spot). Wouldn’t shock me to see Rays fans be underwhelmed by any potential trade.
