The Angels and assistant general manager Alex Tamin are parting ways, report Alden González and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN (Twitter link). Tamin had spent the last three years in Orange County, following GM Perry Minasian from the Braves a week after the Halos hired Minasian out of the Atlanta front office.
Tamin had also spent three years as an AGM with the Braves. Prior to landing in Atlanta, he was a member of the Dodgers’ baseball operations department for six seasons. He was the Angels’ only AGM and served as Minasian’s top lieutenant. It’s the second notable departure for the Halos this week after the club let go of manager Phil Nevin on Monday.
Some other front office/ownership notes around the game:
- The Nationals will hire Danny Haas as scouting director, reports R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports (Twitter link). He’ll take charge of the franchise’s amateur drafts. That role had been held by Kris Kline, who was transferred from scouting director to a special assistant position last month. Haas, 47, has worked in the Diamondbacks’ scouting department for the last five seasons. A Louisville product, he played parts of five seasons in the minor leagues before beginning his scouting career a little over two decades ago.
- News of Billy Eppler’s resignation as Mets’ GM yesterday was met with surprise, as he had been expected to stay on as David Stearns’ #2 executive. The situation became more muddled with a report that MLB was looking into claims the Mets had improperly managed their injured list. Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily reports that owner Steve Cohen is not a target of the league’s investigation (Twitter link). It is still unclear the manner in which MLB suspects that Mets’ officials may have mishandled their IL situation. Whether the organization faces potential penalties remains to be seen.

Minasian has done a solid job with the hand he was dealt in LA. But, he will probably be let go next year. Then he will be brought into a struggling team and turn it around a la DiPoto.

What solid job?
Blue Baron
Which team has DiPoto turned around?
Jesusinmyurethra
Well, Linda Belcher, how about the Reds.
Blue Baron
@BaseballSansBoomersPlease: DiPoto hasn’t had any connection to the Reds, Einstein.
Are you seriously that ignorant?
Jesusinmyurethra
Williamson, Fraley, Marte, and Arroyo. The Reds can thank Dipoto.
Get with the program, Linda!
Blue Baron
So he made a trade for Castillo, Suarez, and Winker. Didn’t help the Reds make the playoffs, did it, Karen?
Jesusinmyurethra
Didn’t it though? Think long-term, Linda. Turning around a team isn’t just making the playoffs. It’s creating a winning atmosphere. Seattle and Cincy are on the cusp of that.
Why did cardinal fans brag about having a winning record for like two decades? Because when you are always competitive it makes fans interested and the team is always in the thick of some playoff spot.
Also, you smell.
Blue Baron
That was another in a series of personal attacks, so you automatically lose the argument. Sorry.
If you would like to re-offer your thoughts without the personal comments, then you still might convince me.
Otherwise, thanks for the discussion, and I’ll take my win and go home.
Jesusinmyurethra
Every comment you responded with included a personal attack. It’s okay though, Linda. You’re dumb. You can have a comment section “win”. Weird, I always hear boomers say autism didn’t exist when they were growing up.
Blue Baron
And that was another one, long after I stopped. So again, you automatically lose.
You should have quit before you made a total a$$ of yourself.
Jesusinmyurethra
Keep it coming, Linda! Actually, I win in this situation and you are the rear end. I recommend taking some time and drawing a clock from memory. You’re getting up there in age and are obviously the forgetful type.
Blue Baron
OK, so if you don’t think personal attacks mean an automatic loss, what rule do you suggest instead? Why would that rule be better?
If you can supply a better rule, we’ll use that.
Otherwise, we’ll stick with what we have, and that makes you a loser over and over again.
That’s my final word on the matter.
Jesusinmyurethra
Obviously a chili cook off. But, you can’t wear your red glasses. They would give you an edge when it comes to judging because people will assume you have a personality and I can’t having you playing the “quirky” angle.
Straight chili battle. No distractions (ie your glasses) and no dirty tricks (ie blinding me with a well-angled reflection from your head).

While they have some good young pitchers and jrod, Jerry’s made 1 postseason in 8 years. Rebuilds shouldn’t take 8 years. Mike Elias has turned around Baltimore in half that time.
User 401527550
Do you mean by using the plan of intentionally losing to get high draft picks. It makes a mockery of the sport. Not a plan to brag about.
orange2001
Minasian, like his predecessors, Eppler and Dipoto, aren’t very good GM’s.
Chris the Great
I get the feeling the Angels are a decade behind the good teams in analytics and other player training and support. This is at the feet of Minasian
NativeAmerican
Wrong. It’s at the feet of the owner who refuses to spend the $$$ necessary to implement even decent analytics and player development operations. #SellTheTeam

Even if that’s the case, Trout and Ohtani still became the best players of their prime. The one thing the Angels have needed over the past 8 years is starting pitching. They even had it, but lost almost all of them to Tommy John Surgery at the same time. But they should’ve replenished that by now. The young rotation they have now can mature into a solid 5, but they’re trying to win now while nurturing that young rotation at the same time. Another big gamble. Give the Angels a solid rotation and they probably have at least 3 or 4 more playoff appearances over the last 10 years.
prov356
I think that’s symptomatic of a crappy owner.
RyÅnWKrol
Dipoto has never turned any team around. Postseason appearances with the Angels and Mariners were random with a bunch of guys having good years at the same time and not necessarily a strong, consistent core to sustain it like the Angels had 15 years ago. The one thing Misanian has done that will help the Angels is piling up as much promising youth as possible with similar service timelines. My thinking is that the Angels have been in a rebuild the last few years while picking up players off the open market to try and be competitive at the same time. The Dodgers did this same thing, but with a $250+ million dollar payroll. And then when their younger players started coming about 6 years ago, they turned into a juggernaut. Arte Moreno should have done the same. Instead, he’s among those owners who are big believers in competitive balance. Sorry, but more than half the league doesn’t even bother to invest in a payroll even at the your level, Arte. If the Angels really want to be a winning team with the youth they’ve brought up, they need to blow past the luxury tax. The young rotation they have has potential, but if they had the Lackey/Escobar/Weaver/Santana/Saunders rotation they had 15 years ago, they would’ve easily won the AL West this year. That’s actually why they didn’t have to go over the luxury tax back then. Until three find a rotation like that again, I think Arte needs to finally get over himself and put his payroll where the Dodgers are at.

Still waiting for the Mets hitting coach to get fired. Spends more time flaunting his muscles than working on the player’s hitting. Almost every player on the Mets this year took a step backwards with their hitting. Was pretty stupid to move Chavez from hitting coach to bench coach, the team hit great with him. In the past 3 years, they went from Quantelbaum, to Chavez, to this clown that I don’t even remember his name. I mean like, where do they find these guys (outside of Chavez)? I’d offer the job to Daniel Murphy, one of the best hitters I’ve ever seen. He’d flip this team upside down
Blue Baron
He’s not interested in a coaching gig.
LongTimeFan1
@LFGMets
Where did they find Jeremy Barnes?
FYI, the highly sought Jeremy Barnes…
4 years in the Astro’s front office
2 years as Astros minor league hitting coordinator
1 year as assistant Mets hitting coach.
That was after his minor league career in which he reached AAA.
And for 2023 season Chavez was moved to bench coach so that Barnes could be promoted to Mets hitting coach.rather than being lost to another team.
Do your homework, get the facts, rather than relying on your beliefs.
njbirdsfan
Murphy was with the team for what 7 years, did more or less league average until he went off in the 2015 playoffs…if he’s one of the best hitters you’ve ever seen, you need to see more hitters.
LFGMets (Metsin7) #InEpplerIsGone!!!!
@njbirdsfan just because someone can mash homeruns doesn’t make them a good hitter in my book. For example, Luis Arraez had a OPS in the high .800s while someone like Matt Olson had an OPS around 1.000. But look at Arraez’s BA, every year he consistently hits over .300. Its the same arguement about Tony Gwynn. Guys like Daniel Murphy I put in the category. Just pure hitters that really know the game. Not everyone’s body if fit to hit 50+ homers. Remember when Barry Bonds was a hitting coach? How’d that go? Guys who are successful without the long ball are the best hitting coaches in my eyes. Solid contact is more important than swinging with all your might and praying that you hit the ball. Under Barnes’ philosophy, barely any Mets hit above a .250 BA. I’ll take a Freddie Freeman 2023 batting year over a Matt Olson 2023 year any day of the week
Blue Baron
Well said, although someone needs actual knowledge of a thing to have beliefs about it.
prov356
I didn’t know we had an AGM or a guy named Alex Tamin.
RyÅnWKrol
Blow past the luxury tax and pick up starting pitching. Angels already have a young, solid rotation, but if they want to keep winning now, they have to raise that payroll to Dodgers level, and mix some veteran starters in there.
