This teams has so much depth. They can make any trade for any player with their young position players. Or trade a veteran to free up some money. All they really need is a SP. they’ve made deals every offseason, and ones that nobody saw coming. Will be fun to see how this offseason shakes out
C Yards Jeff
Sounds like if you make Sonny a competitive offer, not necessarily the best, he will stay. Seems comfortable as a Twin! Of course he can pitch but, IMO, of equal value is his small injury history. More than worth trying to keep.
martras
What’s going to be “competitive” though? I’m more with Adams estimate at 4yrs $100MM for Gray, especially considering top arms get AAV in the $40MM range. Even at $80MM, I highly doubt the Twins are getting there.
C Yards Jeff
Yep. Good point. And I did see the high end $100MM call to boot. Oof! That said; if they can go big deal with a Correa, they can do it with a Gray. He’s a TOR piece, IMO. Go for it!

Gray at 4/100 or Maeda accepting a QO? Sonny was great this year, and solid for his career, but a 4 year deal is pushing it at that age imo
C Yards Jeff
It’s risky at his age indeed. That said, I go back to his small injury history to date. Roll the dice, baby!
martras
@ohyeaham No reason to give Maeda a QO. He’d take it in a heartbeat as he’s probably going to get $12-15MM AAV on a 2 or maybe 3 year contract.
Better to get Maeda at 2/25 or even 3/36 than 1/21.
ohyeadam
Yeah it’s definitely an overpay, but so is an extra year for Gray. One year deals are easier to sign. If he doesn’t accept the QO you get a pick too

I still think there might be some bad blood, maybe they quashed it a bit this year, but gray still might not like the analytics dominating every decision. It lost them game 4.
martras
@alydevil – Seems like the bad blood is probably washed away with a postseason appearance and the front office’s treatment of players. Not sure if you were at any of the Sonny Gray playoff games, I was at his 2nd start and the fans never stopped cheering for him. It was loud, and the fans kept it up for him even after the rough 1st inning. I think that goes a long ways.
