harambe – What I want to know is why do these writers go third person like Rickey when they write the articles for the chat transcripts.
It’s kinda silly, no?
Hemlock agrees with your comment, even if it wasn’t specifically about Hemlock.
Even in hindsight, trading Swanson/Fried while under ATL control will get you run out of town. You’re heavily discounting clubhouse chemistry and their leadership to the ’22-’23 teams, regardless of their stats. The idea that you would have really gotten that much for Swanson going into FA and replaced him in ’22 while trying to defend your ’21 ‘ship and making a run is silly, especially if you think you can win installing a backup SS midseason like Arcia, etc.
They let Swanson leave for even less (a comp pick) and guess what? No one got run out of any town. Sometimes GM’s/PBO’s have to make unpopular decisions. Take the Stanton trade for instance. Ya think the Marlins would take a mulligan on that trade right now?
Whether you believe their offers or not, with FF and Swanson, they put forth a significant offer (less so for Swanson than for FF) that at least affords them the benefit of the doubt they couldn’t had had they traded him away prematurely. AA didn’t make the unpopular decision and not backing the truck up to FF/Swanson?? By keeping them, they exhausted their ability to compete while they were under team control, which the fan base takes notice of. Good luck trying to defend trading away cornerstones for prospects to a fan base that wants to win now, though we all know they can be re-signed by the Braves, but the chances of that happening is a long shot considering they probably wouldn’t be the highest bidder.
Would take some serious spin doctoring to explain how trading two franchise cornerstones for prospects is somehow worse than letting them walk for comp picks.
If you can’t see it with that hindsight, go to an eye doctor. Funny how the best prospects are always involved in hypothetical trade scenarios and not in real life.
All those prospects would have had to do is outproduce Blake Burkhalter and Cade Kuehler.
What else you bring back in your time machine? Definitely not context.
The guys the Braves drafted with the Freeman and Swanson comp picks.
Bottom line, trading Swanson/Freeman while under ATL control would not have gotten anyone run out of any town. They weren’t traded because the Braves were in win-now mode. But the fans didn’t run AA out of town for letting Freeman and Swanson walk so why would they run him out of town for actually getting something for them????
Go back up top and you’ll find the answer.
That’s not an answer. If you watch the Braves it’s clear that their clubhouse chemistry is just fine without Swanson and losing his “leadership” or whatever didn’t cause the Braves to skip a beat.
It’s better without Freeman and Swanson. Freddie was a bully and Dansby just wanted to left alone instead of the local kid face of the franchise role. They put up billboards of him before he even played a game.
They let Swanson walk cause he’s not that good
Rodon money for Fried? So a 6 yr deal? Doesn’t seem like AA’s m.o. Position players, yes.
There’s maybe a 5% shot Fried is back. AA’s been here six years and has never extended a major piece when they’re a year away from free agency. This is the executive who has extended first-year players and trade acquisitions before they even got to Atlanta.
We’ve done this dance twice now with Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson. Both sides will spend the year complimenting each other and talk about how they’d love to make it work. The season will end and Fried will go to the highest bidder.
The 5% chance is that the guy who has already had one TJ in his career, missed a majority of 2023, and was less than 100% health in the last two postseasons, may not want to dismiss any six-figure offer even if he is close to free agency.
The other player is a pitcher who won a Cy Young award in the recent past. Definitely pitched well enough for his team to keep him considering he was never arrested like Ozuna was and his team is still on the hook for his money anyway.
Everyone can see how badly you want to talk about this, but no one wants to. Especially not with you.
And yet here you are.
Trade Elder, trade Grissom, decline Eddie, trade for Chris Sale, sign a high velo reliever like Neris. Extend Minter and Wright, sign Michael Brantley, non-tender Lopez, bring him back at a lower salary on a major league deal, sign a new multi-inning reliever as an option for the 5th starter if one of the youngsters doesn’t step up, try to bring back Morton on a cheaper deal if he doesn’t retire, trade for Bieber or maybe Berrios if he does retire.
Chris Sale? Interesting….
