“(Lorenzen) didn’t pitch well after the trade…”
Generally speaking, I see the point, but it’s worth noting his no-hitter in his Philly home debut!
Schumaker is already under contract with the Marlins for 2024 and 2025 so they would have to “let” him leave. And he’s probably going in win NL MOY so not all that bloody likely.
Counsell or Lovullo (with postseason not factoring in)
Diamondbacks too inconsistent. Either way, the Marlins aren’t letting Skip leave.
Who says it’s their choice? No truth to the rumors that he’s upset over Ng leaving and FO restructuring? There’s plenty of more stable jobs elsewhere with less turnover rate and not playing ATL/PHI and MLB’s richest team (though wild card golden ticket makes divisional foes a lot less scary).
He’s under contract with the Marlins. Of course it’s their choice. He can’t leave until after 2025.
O’Neil for Marco G
That sounds familiar…
Not a Cubs fan. but I’m not discounting them signing Ohtani one bit. Among teams with the money to spend that could be seen as a potential playoff contender, they might be appealing to Ohtani. Since I’m not a Cubs fan, I certainly hope he doesn’t.
But I wouldn’t rule out Texas either.
I wish we could give thumbs up on chat answers. I would’ve given Mark a thumbs up on several responses, especially the one about why a team would trade for Soto instead of waiting for him to become a FA.
The Cubs are in a bad position with their payroll this coming season. Right now, the Cubs have to assume Stroman and Smyly both opt in and they pick up Gomes and Hendricks’s options. That pretty much eats up most if their payroll if they want to stay under the luxury tax.
With that said, the Ricketts family hasn’t shied away from coming out of their pockets if it will increase their capital and when it comes to Ohtani, and the marketing machine that comes along with him, I could easily see the Cubs making a hard push.
Any team that signs Ohtani is going to see a massive expansion in their market that would more than offset the luxury tax penalty.
Now, from a team perspective, what is Ohtani really worth? He ties up the DH spot (but hits well enough to justify it) and teams have to utilize a six man rotation to accommodate him. Not to mention Ohtani has never been in the playoffs and had to pitch on short rest in a 7 game series. That would be an immediate concern of mine.
I do think from a marketing standpoint, Ohtani is worth the risk. When he can no longer pitch and DH, he still can most likely go back into the outfield and/or work first base. That would take some sting out of a 50 million DH only issues.
As a Guardian fan, I have little interest in seeing Cleveland acquire either Tyler O’Neil or Dylan Carlson. Both are overrated and always on the injured list. I definitely think that they Guardians can do better.
Was surprised to see the comment that he’s a good fit in Cleveland because he “makes a lot of contact” – overall contact last season was below league average (75.0 to 76.4), though zone contact was slightly above (87.1 to 85.4).
I think Tyler O’Neil is more of a non-tender candidate than a trade candidate.
Cots has ONeil at a shade under 6 million for next season. The Cardinals typically operate in the 170-200 million range for luxury tax purposes, right now they are estimated at 167 million. That isn’t a lot of money to play with in the grand scheme of things, not when you want to make pretty significant improvements to your rotation. TO’s 6 million isn’t a luxury the Cardinals have (imo).
Mark’s estimate of the A’s payroll is 50 bucks too high.
I read the news today, oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
Mark “speculated that Nola might be let go in part because the Phils could use the QO pick to reload their farm system.”
—
A QO pick does not reload a system.
Jays fans: we need a new manager. Lol. I’ve seen many former players and GMs say the amount of difference the manager has in the outcome of a season is maybe +/- 2 wins. Managing pitchers is probably the biggest part of that
Mediocrity is the responsibility of the front office. You want a different outcome, you need a different operation.
