The Mets have received permission from the Brewers to interview Craig Counsell, reports Andy Martino of SNY, and will interview him soon.
Counsell, 53, has been the manager of the Brewers since 2015 but has been a speculative fit for the Mets for a while now. David Stearns had been general manager/president of baseball operations in Milwaukee for roughly the same period of time that Counsell was manager and recently made the move to the Mets. Upon joining his new club, he almost immediately fired Buck Showalter and opened the manager position in Queens.
Given the longstanding relationship between Stearns and Counsell, many made the logical conclusion that Stearns would bring Counsell to the Mets with him. But that assumed reunion has been on hold recently, as Counsell is still technically the manager of the Brewers. It was previously reported that his contract runs through the end of October, which seemed like it was going to push any interviews with the Mets or other clubs until November, though it now appears the Brewers will let him talk to the Mets about a week early.
The Brewers have generally been successful during the Stearns-Counsell period, making the playoffs in five of the past six seasons despite not running up huge payrolls. That has naturally led to interest from other clubs, wondering what they could do with more resources. Stearns is already aboard with the Mets but it’s not a guarantee Counsell will follow him. As Martino adds, Counsell is expected to pursue other openings just as the Mets are expected to consider other candidates.
The Guardians, Angels and Padres also have managerial vacancies and would presumably have some level of interest in Counsell. It’s been reported that Dusty Baker may step away from managing as well, which would add the Astros to that list. It also can’t really be ruled out that Counsell stays with the Brewers. While he may be tempted by a bigger market and a presumably larger salary, he grew up in Wisconsin and has long-standing ties to the region. His father worked for the Brewers and Craig spent part of his playing career with the club before his managerial career began.
About a week ago, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reported that the Brewers felt he would stay in Milwaukee if he was paid “what he believes is fair.” He reportedly made $3.5MM in 2023, though it’s unknown what level of compensation he would consider a reasonable bump. Given the free-spending ways of the Mets, they would likely be able to offer him a higher salary than the Brewers, though it’s unknown whether that would be enough to pry Counsell away from the club where he has those aforementioned connections.
Some might interpret the Brewers giving him permission to talk to the Mets as a sign they aren’t committed to Counsell, though another explanation would just be about timing. Teams generally prefer to have a manager in place when the offseason begins and they start talking to potential free agents. Therefore the Brewers could have it in their best interest to have Counsell start assessing his options so that they can get clarity on whether he may come back or if they themselves need to start interviewing new candidates.

What team out there wouldn’t want Craig Counsell?
WHY DO NO MLB TEAMS GIVE PHIL BRICKMA A CHANCE, WHAT MORE DOES HE NEED TO PROVE? Icy hot basically stole his billion dollar idea.
That’s like the guy who invented Crazy Glue. He forgot to patent his idea and someone took it and the regret drove him craaazy.
@Tom the ray fan: Who’s Phil Brickma, how is he qualified, and why are you SHOUTING?
Daniel Stern character in ROTY. Pitching Coach.
If Brickma can get Rowyourboatter to settle down and throw strikes as well as getting an over the hill pitcher to return to form he deserves a shot.
He also revolutionized breakfast strategy on while on the road.
not to mention the brilliance of hot ice
Why do they need permission? Counsell is not under contract with the Brewers anymore.
He is a Milwaukee Brewers employee, under contract, until 5 days after the World Series ends
He is probably under contract until the season is over which is the end of the World Series.
He is under contract until October 31st.
THIS
oh….I thought he had a contract until Halloween, gamble
Did you read the article, his contract runs through the end of October, the permission allows them to interview before November.
This CAN’T be right, I was reliably told by the experts in the mlbtr comment section that Counsell was taking a year off to watch his kids play and that he wouldn’t have any interest in the Mets position.
And I was told if I looked a certain way, had so much money and was famous then maybe Ana de Armas would give me a shot, so ya know people say the craziest things.
Interviewing doesn’t mean that he accepted.
The chances of him leaving the Brewers are at best 50/50 now if I had to guess.
Before it was like 85/15 not leaving.
Interviewing confirms this—
He wants to hear what they have to offer
He likes the idea of being paid more
He is open to the idea of managing another team
He is ok with moving closer to where the new team plays (tristate area)
You don’t have to guess.
Theoretically, no one legally obliged to guess on things. But why wouldn’t they?
Why do you think that?
The key is “if [you] had to guess.” In reality, you have no idea if it’s 50/50 and talking like that’s absolute is crazy. It may be 99/1 in his head that he’s leaving for New York because he’s tired of the budgetary constraints or Milwaukee has indicated they won’t pay him the amount he’s seeking.
Yes, it’s kind of crazy to see him potentially depart his hometown team and the franchise he grew up rooting for but it happens.
> In reality, you have no idea
You have no way of knowing what I do or do not know.
Counsel’s situation reminds me in a way like Kevin Cash. Success despite a low budget. Cash will be back and the Devil Eats will again make the PO. I don’t know if the Brewers will be the same without Counsell.
The Devil Eats? What league are they in?
But hey, you can always have a pissing contest about it.
The Brewers are trying to be the Eats… I mean Rays. But they’re not there. Yet.
Why do you have to resort to vulgarities involving waste being streamed at a high velocity?
And what prize would be awarded to the winner of such a contest? Asking for a friend who is interested in entering the contest.
Pissing is not a vulgarity. The prize is bragging rights, lol.
Do you prefer urinating contest? Not the same ring.
And you have no way of knowing what I do or do not know. Unless you’re Craig Counsell or his wife, you cannot be certain about anything. I would bet a lot of money your aren’t Craig Counsell or his wife.
Peeing contest. It sounds more family-friendly and less vulgar.
But how do you score the contestants? Please explain.
Haven’t figured that one out yet! LOL.
If you find an artist as talented as Pisscasso, you’ll know.
The poodle bites, come on frenchy, the poodle chews, snap it.
Frank Zappa
Just a formality at this point. He’s the guy, unless something drastic happens.
I agree with you, Morrie.
And just like you, Buck Showalter was a Good Fella…….. until he wasn’t.
He’s gone, and there’s nothing we could do about it
Well, there likely was: spend more on the roster or pay him the amount he wants.
You don’t know that
How do you know what he knows when he has no way of knowing what you do or do not know? LOL.
I’m suspicious. Besides, what makes you conclude that myaccount2 is a he? It did not announce its gender.
You don’t know what he knows 🙂
You prefer it to he?
What do you mean he’s gone? I mean he’s gone, he’s gone. Your wigs are also great even underwater!!!
> You prefer it to he?
You have not provided enough information. I do not know what I am doing with it or he so I cannot answer the question.
And they’re tested against hurricane winds
By responding in such a way, you’re countering your original point. So is he staying or going? What are his motives? You say it’s 50/50 at best and then say I don’t know that when I respond with things that could have kept him in Milwaukee when someone says he’s gone.
So are you conceding and suggesting you really have no clue?
I would rather be misgendered than called “it” lmao. I’m a “he” for the record.
What am I? A schmuck on wheels?
Right now I am interrogating Blue Baron. I have TWENTY-NINE (29) more days worth of questions to ask it unless the answers deviate.
Please hold all further comments and wait for your turn. You are next. Your expected duration of questions to be answered is FIFTY-SEVEN (57) days.
> I would rather be misgendered
> than called “it”
Interesting. Please clarify.
No.
This didn’t age well
I’m interested in hearing from Brewers fans what you think of CC as a manager.
he coaches like he played… he’s a great clubhouse guy, gives you solid defense, but expect a batting average below .220. the man knows how to manipulate a roster though… the relief pitchers having to face three batters rule was essentially created because of Counsell
Give him a roster assembled by big money and a decent farm and maybe that .220 becomes .290. A Joe Torre situation.
guess we wont know until he does… Counsell is great at getting the most out of mid tier guys, so it would be interesting to see what he does with a roster of all stars and egos
Oh, interesting. I usually see people credit TLR for that.
Agreed. TLR was dragging games into the 4-hr range looooong before CC was manager.
Kept Rick Honeycutt with a job for a long time. Lolol.
the rule got implemented the year after Counsell set a playoff roster with Brandon Woodruff pitching, and Dave Roberts responded with a mostly left handed lineup to combat. woodruff faced one batter and Counsell took him out in favor of a lefty. TLR definitely caused games to go longer with constant pitching changes, but as far as i can recall, Counsell was the only one who tried to manipulate there not being a rule, in a playoff game no less
I think it was the other way around, Wade Miley, a lefty, started and faced one batter.
That was in 2018, though, and 2019 still had no rule about relievers facing a three batter minimum.
The front office has given him crap hitters since 2020. His teams from 2017–19 could really rake.
ehhh, Yeli could anyway… team BA during that span was .249, .252, .246 respectively with OBP around .320… so more average than recently
Well, they had more power guys/run producers, that’s for sure. Shaw, Moose, Grandal, Aguilar… plus a year of Cain as an elite leadoff guy. It’s just that all of them were acquired from outside the org.
He is a good overall manager, sometimes too reliant on analytics, and sometimes leaves pitchers in a bit too long. I think if he had a decent pitching coach with him, he would be top tier for sure.
I can’t really complain too much about him though, defiantly a players type of coach. His analytics and always trying to play the stats vs the player can definitely get frustrating. Using Winker vs the dbacks is a recent example that he used the stats and it failed miserably because winker just is horrible ha.
As a brewers fan though, i don’t want him to leave by any means. Hope he doesn’t.
Whatever it takes to keep the cubs out of first place, I’m all for it. I hope CC stays and tries to fight off the Reds.
The Brewers’ problem is not their pitching; they’ve developed some top-tier pitchers in recent seasons. Hook is fine. Your statement would make more sense if you said “hitting coach.”
Outstanding manager. It’s a crime he didn’t win Manager of the Year in 2017 or in some years since. He probably will get it this year.
I’d say he’s the best manager in the league who hasn’t won a World Series.
You don’t think Lovullo has it locked up?
Nah, since voting happened at the end of the regular season. They only won 84 games and fell out of first place by midseason.
True, though don’t the voters usually pick managers who’s teams have gone from lower win totals to higher? ‘Zona lost over 100 2 years ago
Id vote for CC
Usually, which is why Lovullo got it over CC in 2017 (Arizona’s turnaround was bigger than Milwaukee’s) but they only improved by 10 games this year to 84 wins… not exactly a huge achievement. Until the playoffs started, of course.
He is about as steady as they come. Consistent to the point of being boring. Very thoughtful guy who works well with others. He’s had good relationships with the GMs over the years and is especially close with bench coach Pat Murphy, who probably makes about as many in-game decisions as CC does.
The players like him but he is not really the type to get the fire in him. The locker room speeches always feel stilted and awkward. With some exceptions where he truly looks like a wild-eyed madman, his anger often feels like an act. You can almost see him thinking “okay, now comes the part of the job where I need to be angry.” And in those moments he looks like a middle-aged Wisconsinite in a hoodie arguing with his wife in the parking lot of a sports bar.
But the dude really cares and really likes to win. If he goes to Mets it will be hard not to root for him. Both him and Stearns deserve a well-rounded squad to work with. It’s hard to feel optimistic as a Brewers fan these days, and Counsell is the biggest Brewer fan this side of Uecker.
Has never been criticized even once in the newspaper or ever booed at the ballpark. Wait until he gets to New York.. May regret leaving home.
Former 2B’s historically have the highest winning percentage as Managers (thank you Mr Earl Weaver for your service)
Position Winning Percentage
Second baseman .517
First baseman .508
Third baseman .506
Non-player .500
Outfielder .498
Pitcher .498
Shortstop .495
Catcher .493
I’m pretty surprised at this interesting tidbit. I always assumed catchers were the most successful. Thanks for sharing.
I thought so too, but now I wonder if it’s simply a case of the impression being skewed by a small number of outliers who either won a lot or were considered great managers– Joe Torre, Bruce Bochy, Connie Mack, Mike Scoscia, etc.
And all the catchers who became highly opinionated and entertaining announcers and analysts.
Like Tim McCarver
Absolutely agree Von.
@WampumWalloper: Not a significant spread between highest and lowest and certainly not predictive.
@Blue That’s four extra wins over the course of an entire season between a 2B and C mgr. so there is some significance there. However, not very helpful stats as you’ve noted.
@BB it’s just trivia off the SABR site. Nothing more. Mets have done pretty well with second basemen (Davey Johnson, Willie Randolph). Yankees of course (Billy Martin), but when I saw 2B a little more out of the norm it made me think of Earl Weaver. If you have a moment to smile, here is an Earl Weaver classic moment
m.youtube.com/watch?v=rpS-XFXxJvE
And Mr Davey Johnson (.562). Great post, Wampum. Not predictive, as Blue Baron said, but interesting and consequential nonetheless. Sometimes elections are decided by less than 2.5 percentage points
And as a fellow met fan, willie randolph had a nice little run.. until the 2007 late collapse
Who are the non players? Didn’t they all play some sort of baseball?
Carlos Tosca (Blue Jays), John Boles (Marlins), Ed Barrow (Red Sox and Tigers), and Hugo Bezdek (Pirates) were managers who didn’t play professionally at any level.
Bezdek also was the only person to coach/manage in both professional baseball and football.
Ted Turner managed the Braves for one game when he owned the team in Atlanta, and Emil Fuchs managed them for an entire season when he owned the team in Boston.
Is the interview essentially Stearns saying, Craig you’re hired.
Mystery13: Stearns might say “You’re Hired”, but what does CC say?
Thanks, I’ll accept, seeing as you’ll pay me more and spend money on your roster
I’m sure he wouldn’t have asked permission to interview early if he didn’t have one foot already out the door.
I’m still in the camp that believes he stays with the Brewers, but now I don’t know.
It’s October. Camp ends in August.
He’s a goner from MIL. Why ask for permission instead of waiting for his contract to end in a few days?
Put it in the books!!
Thanks, Howie!
He’ll be back in Milwaukee. He wasn’t avoiding signing a new deal to get this far and then NOT talk to other teams or look at other opportunities.
What’s the point in talking to other teams if in fact he wants to stay with the Brewers?
westcoast: The same reason Judge strung along the Giants and other teams: to scare the Yankees into believing he was going to leave, which he never intended to do, to get more money.
Why wouldn’t any free agent not talk to suitors? Not sure how he gets fair compensation without getting an offer or two from other teams.
@westcoastmetsfan
Leverage= Salary
Would be humorous if after all this the Mets offer him the job and he declines
And for our next round of “Musical Chair Managers”…
lol so the Mets bring the Brewer problems here. Mind you Brewers had a pitching staff lmfao. Oh and a group of trainers that actually knew how to take care of their pitchers. Just a question, where have the brewers gone with those 2 leading the helm????? NOWHERE I’m quite frankly the worst/2nd worst division in baseball. Mediocrity at its finest
LarryJ4: I don’t think we need to know what your ass is doing.
It’s not Counsell’s fault. It’s ownership’s for not letting Stearns and Arnold run a payroll that would actually allow them to have better hitters. Instead, they sign Brian Anderson and hope all their minor league signings and OF prospects pan out.
Mediocre not a word for CC. Or the Brewers honestly. They have been terrible in the playoffs since 2018, but at least they’re getting there instead of hanging around .500 like actual mediocre teams. From 2017–2019 they were killing the ball. Then since 2021 they can’t hit a lick, but that’s because of the players Counsell has been given.
For a guy who had 5 people in the media room after a game going to NY where the media at times likes to fight the manager will be very interesting if he takes the job.
The Angels will not hire a manager with experience. Minasian wants another puppet of his own.
While the article included Dusty Baker’s likely retirement and the vacancy it will create in HOU, let’s not forget the Padres are currently without a manager. Although they do have Mike Schildt in the wings.
As a Brewer fan, I am pissed. Attanasio has become so cheap. He’s heading toward John Fisher/Stuart Sternberg territory.
If you’re not gonna spend on the roster or make the front office argue against paying players more in arb hearings, at least pay your damn manager who is one of the best around AND is a Milwaukee guy.
Counsell wants to win a world series. He knows in the current economy of baseball. Milwaukee will never win a world series.
Well, look at the Padres. A mid-market team whose owner will spend like the big boys. They just have issues in the front office and with managers. If that guy owned the Brewers, they would get a ring because if you gave Arnold money to get some legit hitters around Yelich, that’s a VERY good team with the pitching.
Or the Rays. The Brewers are trying to be them.
Seriously, this is all about $$ not winning the World Series. 5 years from now Stearns and Counsell will have exactly the same number of World Series as the brewers-0
I mean yea you can spend a lot and not win at all, but I’d rather spend a bunch instead of Attanasio cutting payroll EVERY year.
They had a higher payroll than the AZ Diamondbacks. Just barely.
The fact that the Brewers are letting Counsell interview with the Mets before his contract expires tells me that Milwaukee brass have given up on retaining him.
Or he has a standing offer with a deadline with them and wants to see if the grass is greener on the east.
A lot of the moves the Cohen Mets have made have Pedro Martinez energy and this is another.
As a Met fan. I’m excited about Stearns and have faith in his decision making. But I don’t think Counsell is a fit in New York. He has Art Howe written all over him. I know managing has changed a lot since Howe but the parallels are striking to me. Both former infielders who were average players who became managers (Howe first in Houston) in small markets (Oakland and Milwaukee)were they lead low payroll teams to the playoffs. Never the series. I just don’t see Counsell dealing well with the demands of the NY media. Howe didn’t handle himself particularly well either. I know he’s the best candidate I just worry if the Mets sign him that it might be more then he bargained for.
I wish the Mets would hire Wally Backman!
Never going to happen, but it’d be so entertaining watching him lose his entire salary in fines. Baseball’s become far too proper & soft. You just can’t hire a mgr like him, and you certainly can’t get away with throwing at a hitter, or having a lil brawl etc.
It’s unfortunate. I digress…
I don’t blame counsell leaving if he does. Milwaukee is nothing more than a suburb of Chicago he may as well go to bigger city. Plus it’s way to segregated. Only thing Milwaukee has going for them is that it’s the birth place of Harley Davison motorcycles and Miller brewing company.
It is way too segregated but Milwaukee is a great city in its own right, and no way is it a Chicago suburb (I live in Chicago and am from Milwaukee). Lots more going for it than those two old things. It’s come a long way since I was a kid. Downtown is a fun place now.
I stand corrected I forgot to mention Milwaukee is also known for the “The Fonz”. Laverne and Shirley and the Crusher and also uecker even tho he lives in Arizona once season ends
Da Crusher is a legend. Make sure to check out Crusherfest in South Milwaukee. Now don’t diss Milwaukee anymore, you turkeyneck.
I’m not dissing Milwaukee. I’m stating facts. The city is incredibly segregated it’s basically a suburb of Chicago. And the crusher is iconic figure in wrestling history put Milwaukee on the map along with Harley Davidson bikes
It is incredibly segregated. But it is most assuredly not a suburb of Chicago. The culture there is much different. But what do I know, I just am from Milwaukee and live in Chicago.
I keep seeing articles mentioning Counsell as Brewers manager, but he’s no longer under contract with them, right? He’s currently NOT the Brewers manager until then. Guy’s a free agent, just like Shohei is no longer an Angel (hallelujah).
Counsel’s contract expires on October 31st, the Brewers allowed him to interview with the Mets early.
Counsell to the Mets. It wasn’t a big secret after you “heard it here first” on MLB Trade Rumors.
My guess is that hiring Counsell will be the Mets’ big splash this offseason. I don’t see even Cohen incurring another year of ridiculous financial losses by pumping up the payroll again on free agents. They might fill in a few slots with mid-level players but nothing spectacular. In particular, forget about Ohtani.
Kind of sad when your big splash is a new manager, but I’m not crying for the Mets. I really enjoyed their enormous flop in 2023. All that money down the drain.
Was anyone surprised by this development?
Honestly I was surprised. He’s a Milwaukee guy, he lives in the suburbs, has ties with them since his dad worked for them. I thought he’d stay for the long run.
Maybe the kid from Little Big League.is available. He’s obviously a grown man now but he did a great job for a fictional managerial role. Lol
There is NO gambling in Casablanca!!!
This is going down like the Bob Melvin hiring with the Giants, I may be wrong but looks like Counsel is a done deal with the Mets.
Relax Brewer fans. CC isn’t going anywhere unless it’s to the front office or he steps away briefly for family reasons.
Frankly, I hope he goes to the Mets, Cleveland, or wherever to manage. That way maybe I’ll stop reading and hearing the “small market” excuses for why the Brewers repeatedly fail in the playoffs during Counsell’s tenure and have only ONE World Series (40 years ago) appearance in over 50 years as a franchise.
That’s only an excuse used by ownership. Not fans, many of whom are tired of Attanasio’s penny-pinching.
