6:37PM: Former Rangers president of baseball operations Jon Daniels declined an interview request from the Red Sox, WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reports. Daniels “was initially excited” about the job possibility, according to a source, but ultimately decided against an interview “due to the desire to keep his family rooted in Texas.”
12:15PM: It’s now been roughly a month since the Red Sox fired chief baseball operations Chaim Bloom, creating a vacancy atop their baseball ops department. The club has expressed a willingness to take their time in making a decision, but it seems that there’s a building narrative that many potential candidates aren’t terribly excited by the job opening. Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo, both of MassLive, reported on the search today with each of them relaying that the club has been getting the cold shoulder from many of their targets.
It’s not known which specific candidates are involved, but it’s reported than many of them have declined to be interviewed or have withdrawn their names from consideration for the post. Though running a prestigious large-market club like the Sox might be attractive in theory, there are a few factors listed for the lack of interest. One is the high amount of turnover in the Boston front office of late. Ben Cherington got the position in October of 2011 but was replaced as the club’s baseball decision maker by Dave Dombrowski in August of 2015, despite the fact that the club had won the World Series in 2013. Dombrowski was then dismissed in 2019, even though he also brought a title to Boston the year prior, getting replace by Bloom.
Beyond that, there are reportedly concerns around the established role of manager Álex Cora and some incumbent executives. To an outsider, it would appear there are fears of getting hired, not being given much agency and then getting quickly thrown under the bus if things aren’t going well.
One name the club is targeting is Michael Hill, reports McAdam, though it’s unclear if he has been interviewed or if he even wants the job. He does have plenty of front office experience, as he was a part of the Marlins’ front office from 2002 until 2020. He worked his way up to hold various titles, including assistant general manager, general manager and president of baseball operations. But his contract wasn’t renewed after 2020 and he has since been working for Major League Baseball as senior vice president of on-field operations. His name has frequently popped up in front office searches in recent years, with the Astros being interested in him as recently as January. But Hill withdrew his name from consideration for that job, which ended up going to Dana Brown.
One other name on the list is Josh Byrnes, who currently serves as senior vice president of baseball operations for the Dodgers. Cotillo reports that the Sox have had internal discussions about interviewing Byrnes, but it’s unclear if that’s led to any direct contact. Byrnes has a baseball résumé that dates back to being hired by Cleveland back in 1994, later bouncing to various other clubs, including a stint in Boston as assistant general manager starting in 2003. That led to stints as the general manager of the Diamondbacks and Padres, before he joined the Dodgers in 2014. Like Hill, his name has also been a popular one in recent front office searches, most recently being connected to the Tigers just over a year ago.
In what is perhaps a more notable development, the club has already interviewed current assistant general manager Eddie Romero, per Cotillo. He has been with the Sox since 2006 and Cotillo reports that he has a strong relationship with Cora.
There’s still plenty of unknowns around the search and the narrative could always change, but it’s interesting that the club seems to be hitting some obstacles to this point. Though they have Hill and Byrnes on their list, there’s been no reporting to suggest the interest is mutual or that any momentum has been gained with either. As Cotillo relays, Romero might have an edge not just based on his existing relationship with the club but also due to the other candidates taking their respective hats out of the ring, though it’s entirely possible that other candidates will emerge in the weeks to come.
Whoever does get the job will have challenges moving forward. The club is generally considered to have a strong farm system but the American League East is arguably the strongest division in the league. The Orioles, Rays and Blue Jays all made the postseason this year and each club is well positioned to continue being competitive. The Yankees had a bit of a down year but haven’t finished below .500 since 1992 and will surely be looking for ways to come back stronger next year.
The Sox have generally been an aggressive spending team but not as much lately. Per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, their payroll was in the top five in the league for much of the century but has fallen out of that tier since the pandemic. They also have some hefty contracts on the books already, especially those of Rafael Devers, Trevor Story and Masataka Yoshida. Thanks to that group and Garrett Whitlock, the club already has close to $80MM committed to just four players as far out as 2026.

Whoever is chosen should really get to build their own front office and choose their own manager

And that may have something additional to do with Daniel’s waning interest and excitement over interviewing as Kennedy has made decisions over what the coaching staff would look like, and, the purported support to keep Cora in the dugout.
Most quality GMs will want the freedom to put a team they believe in into place, rather than have their hands tied from the start.
SportsFan0000
Good luck with that ask. John Henry and Sam Kennedy will veto that.

It may be a while before we see both the Red Sox and Yankees in the playoffs. Both teams have real work to do–I think the Red Sox are probably closer, but playing in a hyper-competitive division doesn’t make it easier.
RSmith
Yankees yes, Red Sox no.
Red Sox dont have the payroll problems that Yankees have.
andrewyf
The Yankees have never had payroll problems, and likely never will. They’ll spend whatever it takes to be in contention, although not more than that.
The Red Sox are coming off of a second straight last-place finish. They don’t have a starting rotation. They don’t even have a general manager. To argue that they are closer to contention than the Yankees, who missed the playoffs for the first time in years, is utter lunacy.
RSmith
“The Yankees have never had payroll problems”
The rules were never like they are now. Any team will have problems if they over spend. -Draft Pick losses, -International Pool Money, -Compounding Taxes on FA signings. Staying permanently over the cap is a death knell now. Even the Yankees arent immune.
Yankees will rebound quicker and have a smaller down period. But regardless, its coming with that top-heavy payroll.

“They don’t have a starting rotation.”
And the Yankees do?!?!?!?!

Seeing as how all AL East teams got swept in the postseason and the Yankees were the “best” team in 2022 outside of the Astros, anything is possible.
You can never ever call out the Yankees. They always find ways to stay relevant.

Mike – Both the Red Sox and Yankees have the resources to buy their way into the playoffs next year.
There are at least 4 guys who could make a difference for either team: Snell, Yamamoto, Soto, Ohtani.

Maybe they’ll go the Bill Belichick route, and make Alex Cora the manager and general manager.
deweybelongsinthehall
God forbid. Start training Tek as manager if he really still wants the job. Does ownership regret letting Dombrowski go? They forgot they historically spent creating a buzz in New England and elsewhere, selling a lot of merchandise along the way as well as high cable fees for NESN. No buzz likely means season ticket holders with spendable cash are selling or giving tickets to others who don’t have the same finances. Also, while seats were sold, on TV more empty seats were shown than since prior to Henry becoming owner.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Train Tek? Can’t he just be the manager? I don’t think other former players got such formal “training” when they became managers.

It’s probably worth pointing out that this podcast, specifically McAdam, was immediately pushing this narrative on the night Bloom was fired. I don’t doubt that there is some truth to the reporting – Mike Hazen was extended in Arizona, Chris Antonetti already turned down the Red Sox once before. I haven’t listened to their newest update yet, but I’m curious if they are referring to those long shot targets, or if they have had problems with some of their other top tier and second tier candidates as well.
Fever Pitch Guy
rhs – The fact that neither Click nor Ng have been mentioned yet is notable. Fuld is understandable, since his current team is still playing.
Count me among those who believe Romero will likely get it. The way Kennedy strongly emphasized Bloom’s replacement could be inexperienced was a message being sent.
GASoxFan
There’s some mention of Hill out of Miami, which, again goes to your point Fever that is notable that Ng ISN’T being connected to things.
Again, Cora is screwing up the process in something, this time giving the team its best clear shot at having the best possible leadership.
NOTHING Cora brings to the table offsets the cost in talent at the higher levels kf Execs he is costing.

The new head of baseball operations for the Red Sox will only be a figurehead. That is why some of the candidates are not interested. Sam Kennedy, previously Larry Luchino and others make decisions that Ben Cherington, Dombrowski, and Bloom have been the fall guy for. Cherington did not want Bobby Valentine, who was a disaster! Bloom was told to trade Betts. It was probably an interview question. ‘Mr. Bloom, how will you maximize the trade value of Mookie Betts.’
Brian O’Halloran has been with the Red Sox since 2002, Eddie Romero 2006,… These and other brass have outlasted Theo Epstein, Cherington, Dombrowski, and Bloom. They will probably still be with the Red Sox after the next guy is FIRED.
The Henry ownership group has won 4 World Series in its 22 years, which is the most successful in that time span, so they feel the new Pres of Baseball Op will need to fit their philosophy. We will see who wants to work within these constraints, and is willing to be the figurehead and to take the blame as the fall guy.

It is worthy to note that just because Cora hasn’t been fired doesn’t mean he won’t be. Whoever replaces Bloom may be given the option to fire Cora and the rest of the coaching staff because it will be a hard sell trying to fill the PoBO and GM spots telling them they have to keep the current staff
YankeesBleacherCreature
For any other manager, sure. But the facts that Cora was rehired after his suspension and still remains tell me that Henry will not give the new PoBO that autonomy. It is a hard sell for any candidate.

Cora seems certain he will be back next year and he told the press he will have some influence with choosing the new POBO. This has to be a bad look for candidates. It looks like Cora may have more pull with ownership than the POBO. I don’t know why ownership believes so much in Cora. He seems to be an average baseball mind to me.
“The only thing I know, I’ll be here next year,” Cora said, adding that he would be “part of the process” when it came to the exercise of finding a new chief decision-maker.
audacy.com/weei/sports/red-sox/alex-cora-not-inter…
Add in that the last 3 POBOs have only lasted 4 years and it probably is not an attractive job opportunity.

Cora cost the 108 win Red Sox at least 12 wins. How can you possibly give him credit for being a passenger on a boat that wins a race? The best thing the captain of the boat could have done was throw him overboard to make the boat lighter. In Cora’s case, firing him and not replacing him would have meant 12 more wins!!!
Cora is pathetic as a manager.
I don’t know you but you or your youngest child could have led the 2018 team to a Ring. The 2021 team had DD’s guys putting them in a position to win not too different from 2018. Bloom hurt the team by getting rid of Mookie and Cora hurt the team by not knowing anything about his job.

When there is a power vacuum, the most ambitious people (regardless of competence) take their place. The Red Sox need to fire the convicted cheater Cora before he gains any more unwarranted power in the organization.
DBH1969
This is nothing but speculation on my part, but this may be very similar to Luccino being pushed out by Henry. I will post a link from 2015 below.
I am beginning to wonder if Kennedy is being fed the rope to hang himself, just like Henry did with LL. And if other execs in MLB are getting the same same feeling, it would explain the lack of interest. Who wants to be hired only to be fired when Kennedy is forced out.
Henry may be fed up to the point of just wanting to do a full house cleaning. Just like LL no longer had Theo to blame, Kennedy, Cora, and O,’Halloran will not have Bloom to blame. Will be interesting to see if this is the case.
The article posted below sounds a lot like the Sox today.

Red Sox are going to get a whole lot of no thank you from candidates. Not unlike the Mets last year. I wonder, Eppler might end up taking the job after being their 8th choice.

Nothing surprises me about this. We have literally fired GM’s that have won the World Series, so zero job stability. The roster is in shambles to such a degree that I envy no one fixing it. We have 45,000 named titles in the front office all trying to justify why they exist. The new GM has to deal with all this while knowing the owner has already ok’d the manager, which directly means the new GM will neither have autonomy, and starts his tenure knowing his role is to play under predetermined rules with predetermined people? Not sure I want this job, in fact, I know I don’t want it, and they could really use me.
Cooperdooper7
This would be a great Job to take for someone if they were not stuck with Cora. Farm System has lots of upcoming Talent and after finishing last 3 out of the last four years there is nowhere to go but up…. With that said, who would want to work with this ownership team.
FatChance65
The Red Sox GM/POBO position has gone from one of the most coveted in baseball to now nobody wants any part of it. John Henry has created a toxic environment.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s rife with potential to be toxic. A senior level exec is going to want a hierarchy with a proper chain of command. You can’t have people go behind another’s back to go straight to the owner bc it sows distrust.
Fever Pitch Guy
YBC – That is precisely why I’ve been asking for an Org Chart, to see who reports to whom.
We all believe the manager reports to the POBO, but we don’t know that for certain. Maybe the manager reports to the VPOBO or the GM or the Assistant GM’s.
GASoxFan
Fever, with the game of musical titles going on in the front office, I doubt you’ll see one.
Problem is, once you get a feel for who reports to whom, based on a mix of news articles, hiring and firings, then they mix it up with new titles that sound like changes in seniority. All of a sudden you’re back to ground zero again.
Michael Chaney
Nothing personal here, but I’m not really surprised that this isn’t an appealing job.
You’re getting four years max (whether you win a ring or not) in a big market job with a ton of pressure, working for an owner that’s seemingly lost the desire to spend at the top of the market, in a division with three playoff teams and another that hasn’t had a losing season in 30 years and will probably spend a little more aggressively to keep it that way. And you also get to find yourself in a power struggle with the manager who may or may not rather have your job anyway. What’s the appeal in any of that?
Fever Pitch Guy
Michael – Great post!
One big sign when someone is out of touch with reality, they overvalue themselves and their possessions.
That’s where we are at with Henry. He may be a great commodities trader, but without brilliant baseball minds like Lucchino and Dombrowski he is incapable of successfully running a MLB team … at least when it comes to onfield success.
Niekro floater
Cant get 2 excited w/bosox current braintrust list of GM candidates, if they knew what they were doing they wouldn’t be interviewing GM candidates.
SportsFan0000
No surprise here.
I predicted this would happen with the Red Sox.
Word is out in MLB about the toxic Front Office and Ownership micromanaging baseball decisions that should be made by baseball pros.
At least two problems for anyone considering the Red Sox GM job:
: Owner John Henry is doing his latest Arte Moreno micromanagement imitation
and Business OPs guy Sam Kennedy who is projecting himself into baseball Ops and Team construction when he has no background or experience in building contending baseball teams.
The preposterous BS going around the Red Sox Front Office,( Sam Kennedy) Red Sox Ownership (John Henry) and given to the East Coast and Red Sox Media
WAS: THAT:
Dave Dombrowski did not know how to build a baseball team, farm system and Front Office?!
Most of us outside the Boston/NY Media and fan bubble knew that was BS when those false rumors were put out there.
Congratulations to Dave Dombrowski and the Defending NL Champion Phillies
on their second straight trip to the National League Championship Series.
And, it looks like Dombrowski has assembled an even better team than the 2022 National League Champion Phillies..
And, Dombrowski has used all the tools in the Pres of Baseball Ops toolbox including smart trades for young core players, building the farm system, free agency.
CF s Marsh and Pache (who the Braves and A’s gave up on )were also brilliant acquisitions by Dombrowski.
John Henry and Sam Kennedy did not allow Dombrowski to do his job at the end in Boston.
Ditto with Mike Illitch in Detroit when Dombrowski parted ways there.
AN EXPERIENCED President of Baseball Ops needs to be given a budget and left alone…TRUSTED TO DO HIS/HER JOB .
Red Sox will hire another GM Trainee since experienced GMs and Presidents of Baseball Ops won’t put up with the stressful work environment, the micromanagement and all the BS and Drama that goes with it/

SportsFanoooooo –
ONE OF THE BEST COMMENTS I’VE EVER READ ON THIS SITE.
You have explained things both accurately and comprehensively. Thank you.
I am in complete agreement and matching fear that ownership will do the wrong thing.
The 2019 “BRAIN CRAMP” that turned this winning dynasty into a loser has never been explained adequately to the fans. Maybe when they unseal the rest of the Kennedy plot in 2040 we can get an explanation of why Henry tore his own team apart.
Some say it was his jealousy of DD getting the complete credit for the 2018 Ring, which he deserved. Some say it’s because Mookie offended ownership by not buying into the home town discount concept forced on so many Boston stars. Some say it’s Mookie’s audacity to confront Henry on his racism. Some say it was nothing more than a shifting of funds to buy other sports entities elsewhere. Some say it was Henry being played by Cora because Cora was ready to drop a dime on Henry for knowing about the 2018 sign stealing operation.
So many theories but no confessions by Henry as to why he shot himself in the foot by firing DD and banishing Mookie from the Red Sox along with Price, the fellow black player who Mookie stood up for against ownership. 2040 can’t come soon enough. I really want to know the truth behind Henry’s sabotaging of this storied franchise.
AL34
After that Buffoon move of getting rid of Mookie Betts and David Price they had to pick up an African American ball player hence the panic move of getting Jackie Bradley Jr. back. That trade for Hunter Renfro was horrid and Jackie Bradley Jr. was clearly finished at this point in his career. The move by Bloom was a terrible trade in both cases.
GASoxFan
3 things hurt the red sox attracting a talented PBO:
1) ownership meddling – this includes elevating O’Halloran and guaranteeing his job along with the past patterns of interference
2) not giving free reign on coaching staffs, especially Cora.
3) the atrocious Devers extension which puts over $31 million of your CBT payroll into an overpaid glorified DH.
If you disagree with point #3, I proffer this stat comparison:
Player 1 – .271/.321/.572 good for an .853 ops, 33 HR, and a 134 OPS+
Player 2 – .273/.351/.500 good for an .851 ops, 33 HR, and a 126 OPS+
One player is $31m. The other made $10m.
Who do you choose, and, what do you value the production at?
I leave out the butchering job at 3B since Devers MUST move off 3B or the SP will keep getting killed by his inability to play better defense than a t-ball player.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – Great post, but I would also add Henry’s penchant for firing heads of baseball ops as another major turnoff.
People are still shocked Henry would force Dombrowski out less than a year after a 108-win championship season … and Dombrowski actually had very strong ties to Henry prior to 2015.
AL34
I think a lot of potential people are scared off because of the ownership. They have let Theo Epstein, Ben Cherrington, Larry Luchinno, Dave Dombroski, and Chaim Bloom over the last 12 years. Theo Epstein and Terry Francona should never have been let go. I don’t know how much influence John Henry has on player moves like the Mookie Betts horrible trade. He definitely had a major influence on that move. You are also inheriting a manager that you have no say over as a General Manager. Eddie Romero may get it by default.
mikecws91
I hear Rick Hahn’s looking for a job… lol

While i dont disagree with comments from sportsfan and troll among others on this thread lets at least give credit where credit is due since Henry and Co. Took over the Red Sox in 2000? They have 4 titles including the curse breaking 2004 season , for those of us paying attention since the 70s thats an amazing thing..plus no other team can match the red sox level of success this century. So while we dont always agree with them..they do get it right more than anyone else
GASoxFan
Let’s ignore the rings/flags.
The MOST important thing Henry accomplished was keeping the team in the Fens. They modernized and repaired, basically saved, fenway park, and, saved baseball from moving away from its historic site.
There’s a lot of credit for that.
But, many questionable actions have happened since, ranging from team and player (mis)management, down to unfairly targeting some great figures of franchise history.
Trollfree
Poolhall – For me, I have been extremely pleased with the money support being provided but when you profit in the 100 millions from your baseball product it’s easy to provide CAP money to make those profits.
Like GA , I also appreciate that Fenway has been altered not replaced just like Wrigley my other favorite ballpark.
What I don’t appreciate about the owners is their insistence on home town discounts and their bizarre behavior with regard to the two cheating scandals and Cora. Something doesn’t sit right about their behavior. Cora is a suck-up who more than likely circumvented Dombrowski to build relationships with the owners since they forced Cora on DD. That backdoor relationship has survived Cora cheating twice and being fired once but his dismissal was almost an apology yet when DD was fired they told him to not left the door hit him in his hind quarters. That makes no sense since DD brought the winning to Boston despite the bad managing by Cora. Something stinks and I am going to point it out over and over in hopes we can understand why CORA is with this team when he’s so bad at his job.
I think the secret story of why Cora is here and still here is worth exploring. It’s completely illogical. He sits with Kennedy as if they are buddies so I can only guess that Cora told Kennedy about the 2018 cheating and promises to divulge that information if he loses his job. It appears Henry is in the same boat.
The owners are the best we’ve had BUT there is something rotten in Denmark with respect to Cora. The integrity of the organization has taken such a severe hit for supporting the serial cheater and liar. The fans deserve to know what’s going on and why the owners allowed the self destruction of the team by Bloom.
The big picture, yes I agree and give the owners credit for changing the direction of the Red Sox 25 years ago. I also credit them with taking it all away 4 years ago and I want to know why.
Fever Pitch Guy
Pool – You’re suffering from a classic case of living in the past.
While it is wonderful to remember and celebrate past success, one should NEVER believe that people and situations don’t change. John Henry alone didn’t win those championships, he had several great baseball minds who were instrumental (ie: Lucchino, Dombrowski, etc). He doesn’t now, and his focus now is divided between his many entities (Liverpool, Penguins, NESN, The Globe, Fenway Corners, etc).
