The Giants are looking for a new manager to replace Gabe Kapler and Joel Sherman of The New York Post adds a new name to the list of candidates, reporting that they have asked the Red Sox for permission to speak with Jason Varitek about the vacancy. The Red Sox, who currently employ Varitek as player information coach, have given Varitek to permission to talk to the Giants. The two sides will have an “informational” phone call in the coming days before deciding whether or not to move the process along.
Varitek, 51, played for the Sox from 1997 to 2011 but has transitioned into other roles in his post-playing days. The Sox hired him as a special assistant to the general manager back in 2012, just a few months after his retirement as a player. He got a uniformed coaching role prior to the 2021 campaign, initially with the title of game planning coordinator before becoming player information coach.
He is clearly respected around the league as his name has been connected to various job openings in the past decade. He has been floated as a fit for various managerial positions over the years but he has stayed with Boston that whole time. It was reported in November of last year that Varitek signed a three-year deal to stick with the Sox, but teams generally don’t stand in the way of their staff pursuing external promotions, so it’s not surprising that the Sox are letting him talk to the Giants to see how it goes.
It doesn’t seem like a decision on the job will be made soon. At least one of their known candidates, Rangers bench coach Donnie Ecker, is preoccupied with the ongoing postseason. Per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi recently made a trip to Japan as part of the club’s ongoing interest in right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Part of the reason he had the time to do that is that they are waiting to speak to some managerial candidates who are not currently available.
Varitek joins Ecker and current Padres manager Bob Melvin as external candidates known to be on the Giants’ list, while Stephen Vogt has already been interviewed. The Giants have also interviewed internal candidates such as bench coach/interim manager Kai Correa, assistant coach Alyssa Nakken and third-base coach Mark Hallberg.
It was reported earlier today that the Giants interviewed Kapler about their front office vacancy, making it possible that he and Varitek end up swapping employers.
Love this. Catchers make the best managers.
Unlike fashion forward puppets that play corner outfield
Fire Cora and keep Tek. Sadly, if Tek were to get the position, it likely means Cora is running the show. I have no idea why ownership worships this guy.
Dewey – I’m not afraid to say it … would be a hard kick to the nuts if Tek leaves to manage some other team because Henry won’t let Cora go.
Hopefully they give Tek a raise and keep him in Boston.
There’s no way the Red Sox let Jason Varitek go. If the Giants offer him the job let alone an interview, the Red Sox will give him a pay raise and a promise to hire him when Cora is done. No way they let him go. Boston would sell him on a year or two more of Grooming to ensure his success when he takes the new role.
A raise and a promise will not beat a sure thing if the Giants offer Tek the job. Tek has put in the time, if he goes I hope it’s a short term deal so when Cora is gone or upstairs he can come back, ngl if Giants sign him I will watch more Giants games than I currently do.
Gary – When would Cora be done? If it’s put in writing after next season, fine. If not, Tek won’t stick around for what could be years.
BTW – When Venable left, it was Vazquez that replaced him … what does that tell you.
Finish last place or close to it this coming season and Cora is done.
Hire AJ Pierzynski, and he can inspire his players with a punch in the nuts.
Pierzynski would be a good choice. As SF Bay rightly put it, catchers make the best managers. A.J. is like his old manager, Ozzie Guillen: No nonsense and an ability to get what they need as far as players go. Varitek would be an awesome choice for any team. The last of the great Sox catchers, following Fisk, the greatest catcher of his generation.
When Pierzynski played for the Giants, rumor was it was a toxic clubhouse, in which he played no small part. Rumors, yeah, but the fact they gave up Francisco Liriano and Joe Nathan for him, but let him walk without any effort to re-sign him gives me pause when considering him as manager.
That is ALL u ever heard bout Pierzynski was how much teammates n league hated em. Played well on sum good tms but there is reason that storm cloud was always over his head. Not sure he would have ppl skills necessary 4bein in charge of 26 players. He would probably be great 4after gm soundbites but as passionate leader n face of organization think there’s better hires available.
I remember one broadcaster quoting a player who had said to him, “When AJ is on the other team, you really hate him, and when he’s on your team, you hate him a little less.”
Heard the same thing. He was like Dennis Rodman. Annoying and got under everyone’s skin. And it was great as long as it wasn’t directed at your team.
Pierzynski is universally hated by Giants fans.
I was just interested in commenting on his inclination to punch people in the nuts.
Ross is pretty doodoo
Red Sox interviewed Kapler not the Giants
David – Where does it say the Red Sox interviewed the Giants? I know the Sox are desperate, but to interview an entire franchise?
Last line of the article.
“It was reported earlier today that the Giants interviewed Kapler about their front office vacancy, making it possible that he and Varitek end up swapping employers.”
Clearly Darragh meant Red Sox and not Giants.
That’s a huge misread of David’s comment. The last sentence of this article states It was reported earlier today that the Giants interviewed Kapler about their front office vacancy, making it possible that he and Varitek end up swapping employers.” David was correcting that to be the Sox interviewed Kapler for the FO position, not the Giants. MLBTR needs to fix their article.
Ken – My comment was a grammar joke.
He meant the Red Sox, not the Giants, interviewed Kapler.
See the difference when proper grammar and punctuation is used?
It’s the weekend and I’m in a good mood. Haha!
Sorry, I misinterpreted your post as well. I see what you were saying upon re-reading. And it was a decent joke.
Jean – No worries and thank you.
And yet no one in here had any problem understanding what he wrote. Maybe you’re not as brilliant as you think you are.
Relax pal. It was funny.
Here we are talking about grammar when we should be baseball.
Ken – You are always taking shots at me, why not just mute me?
Muting doesn’t always solve the problem. You’re oblivious to the whole thing but you’re actually relentless, always have to make the last word, and call out people based more on speculation than what they actually write. You have some good things to say, but the way you articulate is frustrating because you always approach every conversation with the implication that you’re the only one who has an opinion in the room.
Red Sox should fire Cora and hire Varitek
Yeah. I have no clue why the Red Sox don’t interview him instead for manager.
I honestly think Cora has some dirt on 2018.
He is the dirt
GA- he has audio of his interview with henry when he’s asked if he could “make things happen in Boston “ like he did in Houston.
deGrom – This is reminiscent of Dombrowski in his first season with the Red Sox holding onto Farrell another year, which caused Lovullo to leave for Arizona. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing happens here, Tek leaves now and Cora is no longer the manager after next season.
Just when you start thinking Henry/kennedy were on the right track cleaning up some of their messes, now lining you up for a square kick in the nuts.
Wait for it, I can hear Cora telling you move two inches to the left so they can make good contact.
NO!NO!NO!!! This would be worse than”86”!!! Okay close… fire Cora now!!!
I just got over Brais leaving this would put me right back with Randle P!!!
Nonstop throwing names out there until a manager is named. It gets tiring.
Welcome to OUR world… crazy .. two most successful teams of 21st century..
Ya..throwing names out there would be rumors… like mlb trade rumors…who would come to this site for that?
Bay – As George Costanza would say, it’s not a rumor … if you believe it.
Or as Arnold would say, it’s not a rumah.
Arnold said “It’s not a tummah!”
LLGiants64, Are you suggesting that when a team asks another to interview someone for their managerial vacancy, it shouldn’t be reported?
Can’t think about Varitek without remembering that Boston’s Mayor confused him with Vinatieri
masslive.com/sports/2010/05/boston_mayor_thomas_me…
Please tell me he didn’t get re-elected???
Olmtiant – He kinda died.
Ouch… my bad…
I Can’t think about Varitek without remembering the Sox robbed the M’s getting him and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb.
Jean – I can’t think about Varitek without remembering he dated Heidi Watney and married Nick Swisher’s ex.
Ah, memories…
Whoah FPG!! Expert on the WAGS !!!!
Ignorant – There’s a long history of NESN employees getting involved with players and managers, it’s why they put an end to the female sideline reporter.
Wrap your wacker before you attacker.
Wil Middlebrooks scored big time with Jenny Dell
Silicone valley getting Tek?
Silicone Valley is in SoCal, and Silicon Valley is in NorCal.
You just covered the boob and the tube.
Good work.
As much as I’d love him to be the Boston manager I think it would be best if he managed elsewhere. I know I don’t want to be screaming at the TV, second guessing his decisions. I’d rather direct my anger at cora because he deserves it no matter what.
Why be negative? Hopefully Tek has learned and won’t be another Cora. That’s the last thing the Sox need.
I’m not being negative, disagreeing with the manager on occasion is just the reality of watching a 162 game season. There is no perfect manager, Francona was the closest we got to that and really I’d love to see Varitek take cora’s unearned spot.
grnmt – You ever notice the difference when both Cora and Varitek are captured on TV while in the dugout during games.
Cora is always yucking it up with Vazquez and Febles by his side.
Tek is always serious, focused on the game, all business.
My only concern with Tek as manager is he may have to work on his communication skills. He was a really quiet guy as a player, but when he spoke the players listened. He had the C on his jersey so obviously he had the respect of the entire clubhouse. When you think about the different and very large personalities back then, being named captain really meant something.
It will be gutwrenching if we see him managing in another uniform. Henry better prepare to spend big. If the Sox don’t make the postseason next year and Tek does, the backlash will be fierce.
Agree. Get some experience outside the microscope of the East Coast press, then return as Cora’s successor in 2025.
Bee – No chance Tek signs a 1 year contract.
This feels like Torey Luvollo getting away again. Cora is overrated.
Torey Luvollo’s dad was the producer of Hee Haw, which is a crime against humanity. Seriously, as a child of a Hee Haw loving parent, this cannot be forgiven. I am emotionally scarred.
Here in Canada we had The Tommy Hunter Show. No, not the guy that pitched in MLB, just the Canadian equivalent of Hee Haw. It was on right before Hockey Night In Canada … now I’m upset, too.
As a kid in Victoria British Columbia, we had Bugs Bunny hour at 4:00 before Hockey Night in Canada at 5. My dad hated hockey so we would put the volume down real low while he was asleep on the couch so we could catch maybe the first 15-20 minutes of the Canadiens versus the Maple Leafs. Then he’d wake up and tell us to walk over to the set and move the clicker to the news channel before nodding off again. Intense game of cat and mouse in those early years in Western Canada.
How about The Raccoons, Gary? I know you’ve seen The Raccoons. Classic. Thanks for sharing a west coast perspective – we had to deal with The Tommy Hunter Show way out east in Cape Breton. The good ol’ days. Have a good day, Gary.
I don’t remember the raccoons. It could have been on TV in our area but I don’t recall. But getting up from the couch and changing the channel for my dad, THAT I do remember lol.. early to mid 70s.
Fire Cora and hire Tek!
A rookie manager? I was hoping MLB teams were getting away from that trend.
Agreed, Lord – a tired act.
The Red Sox interview Kapler and the Giants interview Varitek…it can’t get any worse for a Sox fan, can it???
@Slimchance65 I know. They really should switch.
Remember, they are keeping Cora… I’m sure you feel great now
Goin through ol boxes of baseball cards 4 name of nxt SF mngr. Donny baseball, Varitek, n Melvin (think he has a job). 1 thing to take ur time patiently hiring n installing new winning regime its another thing when process appears overly drawn out, clueless n indecisive. Think Zaidi’s seat is getn warm.
that the Giants interviewed Kapler about their front office vacancy
don’t you mean the red sox….?
Why do most people at mlb network and national media and others in mlb praise cora as one of the best game managers in the league? Yet most people on these message boards trash him? I mean its really only here i see all the disdain for cora
Pool – Because the major media and anybody associated with MLB will never, ever criticize a manager. That would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face. The managers have too much power to risk angering them. You say something negative about Alex Cora, you can forget about getting real answers to any questions you try to ask him.
Exactly Fever, long gone are the days when beat reporters had the balls to criticize or ask the tough questions. Now, they’re nothing more than an extension of the PR department.
Also, keep in mind that MLBN is the mouthpiece for owners and management, not the players. This was particularly notable during the lockout.
I believe that there is an even mix of fact-based game management criticism as there are folks that can’t get over hearing that trash can beating.
I’ll never get over that trash can beating sound. The worst cheating scheme in MLB history and he got a slap on the wrist. Such b.s.
grnmtn – As further evidence of how corrupt MLB is, why the hell did Cora get suspended through the 2020 season instead of for a set number of games? The suspension was given at the end of April, when MLB knew it would be a shortened 2020 season.
Compare that to ARod, who was suspended 162 games plus the postseason.
At the VERY LEAST, Cora should have been suspended for 162 regular season games plus the 2020 postseason (not that the Sox would have made it anyway).
How is it the manager, who is not represented by a union, gets off easier than players who are part of one of the strongest unions in the country?
I don’t know Fever, I just don’t know. He and Hinch should have been banned for life.
One group is paid propagandists who want to keep getting paid. Then there is us, the group who base opinions on results.
Don`t you know that some contributors are much smarter than Alex ?.Even Tito Francona became a victim of these self proclaimed ”experts” when it was discovered that a couple of pitchers ,that weren’t going to play anyway ,had the audacity to snack on chicken and beer during a game ?”OH THE HUMANITY”!!All he did was manage a team that had gone thru an 86 yr .drought ,and then managed them to another one in `07.Alex is just their latest target . They can`t forgive his mistake, for which he was punished and acknowledged it..I love Tek too but, he has NEVER MANAGED AT ANY LEVEL!!Make him the bench coach and get some knowledge from a manager that also has won a
W.S. ring.
bergy – No offense, but you saying Tek “shouldn’t be manager because he has NEVER MANAGED AT ANY LEVEL” is absolutely freakin’ hilarious.
You know why?
Because when Cora became Red Sox manager he had NEVER MANAGED AT ANY LEVEL.
In fact, Tek right now has THREE TIMES the experience Cora had when he became Red Sox manager.
Cora had just ONE YEAR AS A COACH before becoming Red Sox manager.
Tek has THREE YEARS AS A COACH.
Say what you want about Tek as a person, but calling him out for a lack of experience is beyond ridiculous.
Okay fever, my bad on the experience, Tek is ready, but my greater point was Cora should not be fired. Not his fault Chaim let Nate and Wacha leave ,had no SS or 2nd baseman. Then Whitlock and Houk went down so Alex was dealing with a flawed lineup. He won a ring when he had the horses so leave him in place and if the Sox suck again, then bring in Tek.
Varitek should stay far away from woke and lawless San Fran
someone shoehorned another terrible and unnecessary political take into the convo and said Woke! everybody drink!
I’m drunk from seeing it too many times already today.
Yeah. The use of woke is so tired that the argument is lost when mentioning it, especially in a sports discussion.
You don’t even have to get political. San Francisco is horrible now.
It’s a shame too. Used to be one of my favorite cities to visit on business. Not any more.
Lord – It tore me apart when I was in Cali a few months ago and watched games in SD and Anaheim. I really wanted to visit SF, ever since The Real World years ago, but it wasn’t worth the risk of having my rental car broken into or me getting mugged.
So many beautiful cities being destroyed by politicians refusing to clamp down on crime because they don’t want to lose the votes of the people who commit the crimes and support the criminals.
Now I fully expect another hissyfit from Acel. Lol
When I was there on business, never thought twice about walking around at night, heading back to my hotel from a pub or restaurant. I have friends who work in the tech industry and live in the region, and they’re all “don’t show up right now, you’ll be disappointed.”
Lord – I used to feel safe like that walking around the Inner Harbor in Baltimore… not any more.
SF Resident here … it’s improved lately walking around at night, etc. It’s been quite lively lately.
However (and I hate to admit this), if I have friends visiting, I always direct them to find paid parking garages with attendants. The # of friends who’s cars have been broken into has been astounding (even in paid parking garages without attendants).
I also suggest friends that fly in not to even bother renting a car and just use Uber or Lyft to get around and not deal with the hassle.
FPG: so funny when a weak minded snowflake such as yourself gets his undies in a twist when someone points out how ignorant you are when you talk about anything whether it’s baseball, politics or crime.
I get that people who are uniformed such as yourself tend to lash out and antagonize people who are but perhaps take a minute to read and learn about these topics and you might actually sound educated and as a bonus probably be a lot less angry and antagonistic in other areas of your life too..
Baltimore city is a war zone. Anybody who hasn’t been there can think they comprehend the city’s level of violence n dire social economic plight but until uve livd n survived northeast u can not understand the complete erosion of hope n overwhelming despair that engulfs charm city. Ride around near hopkins n projects that surround area, goto inner harbor, all the “bombed” out dilapidated vacant row homes, u will not believe Ur still in the US. Scary place.
Acell10 – How ironic for you to get up in Fever’s grill for saying things you don’t like. You probably should see someone about your anger issues!!! hahahahahaha
Picking on the good guys will always lead to another embarrassing moment for you. You’ve had so many but you still go after the guys that speak the truth. Hope you are paid well for your bad opinions.
KD17: I have nothing to be embarrassed about unlike yourself who was humiliated so much in the comments section that you had to change your screen name at least 4 times.
insecure, hypocritical ignorant people like you will always rush to defend other liars and bad people. It’s as weak as your current screen name
acel – Thanks for helping prove me right yet again! Just like I said, I knew you’d throw a hissyfit because we are talking about crime in SF and of course you single me out.
So where have ya been? I get why you’re so angry, now that it’s been proven Bloom was incompetent and was therefore relieved of his duties. Remember all those discussions where you blasted me, KD, GA and others for our justified criticism of Bloom?
Same thing with Henry, you insisted he was a great owner who hasn’t made any mistakes and can do no wrong. Did you catch all the articles pointing out how the Red Sox are a team to avoid working for in large part because of Henry and Cora? Not that you need to read articles about it, as all the declined interviews is plenty proof of what KD, GA and I have been saying all along.
Well I look forward to hearing more of your irrational takes on the Red Sox, but please stay on topic and stop with the personal attacks. The subject of this article is the SF Giants, so please keep your comments on SF or the Giants. It’s been friendly and fun here while you were gone, or I should say while you didn’t use your Acel account. Let’s please keep it that way.
Niekro – Great post, so true! The last few years I was in Baltimore, I would park and walk around Lexington Market and the Johns Hopkins Medical District. Even then all you saw was drug addicts shooting up, homeless everywhere, gang bangers making drug deals. Once Freddie Gray happened, I scratched Baltimore off my travel list. I’m glad I did though, because I then added Arlington Texas and Anaheim to my travel list, both very safe areas. It’s too bad SF will probably never be on my list, what a beautiful city it used to be.
FPG: I see you’re still lying again. you’re allergic to telling the truth. You just can’t resist attacking good posters like me. It’s like you’re obsessed with certain posters like myself. It’s rather of creepy actually. why else would you call me out by name and then think I was responding to your post about crime in san fran.
anyway I look forward to more delusional takes regarding the red sox riddled with personal attacks, accusations and now terrible political takes, Just please make sure to stick to one screen name because it looks like you accidentally responded the first time with your KD17/trolled account. Perhaps you’ll find some dignity and class by then. I mean stranger things have happened but I’m not holding my breath
TF – Thank you! I really think he was posting under a different account that is on my mute list, and now he’s using the Acel account to take more shots at me.
acel – Don’t attack TF for speaking the truth. We were all having friendly, fun conversations here until you showed up. Then you jumped into a conversation between myself and others, and immediately began firing shots.
I really don’t want to add the Acel account to my mute list, but I need you to focus on the subjects being discussed instead of just attacking everyone.
Obviously you don’t like that many of us are pointing out the high crime in SF. Rather than attack us, support why you disagree. Bring something to the table other than guns blazing.
FPG: obviously you don’t like being called wrong. I understand that you need to bring politics in to distract from the fact that you were wrong but save the political comments for political posts. It’s rather embarrassing how upset you get at other posters simply for being wrong. Learn how to handle that better. And while I’m doling out constructive criticism you should refrain from lying to make your point. It hurts your already weak arguments.
Be honest and forthright. Admit you’re wrong instead of making personal attacks and calling other posters out. It’s unbecoming of you and KD17/trolled. If you brought that to table I’m sure you;d be a much happier person.
Also feel free to mute me if you can’t handle a spirited back and forth. I enjoy our friendly banter but you seem to be very sensitive and taking it personally.
acel – Not that this needs to be said, but who is the one who again initiated the back and forth? You.
Who is the only one who is calling others “insecure”, “hypocritical” “ignorant”? You.
You’re angry that TF, GA and I were proven to be 100% correct again this year and you were proven to be 100% wrong again. Show some integrity, class, maturity and character. Own the L’s and move on. Bloom sucked, Cora sucked, and Henry has turned into a crappy owner. All indisputable.
I’m not gonna participate in your cluttering up these comments with personal attacks that nobody wants to read about. That is the epitome of a troll, somebody who comes here and attacks others instead of discussing the article being discussed.
This will be my last post on this, find someone else to harass if you can’t stay on topic.
FPG: again refrain from lying. You called me out in your post if you want to play the who started it first game. It was rather creepy you did so and very in character for you that you’d be surprised someone would respond after you did so.
I keep forgetting how sensitive and easily offended you are. and I can see you’re very upset. I certainly wasn’t making person attacks. Were you? I didn’t take it as such. That’s not surprising if you were but I certainly wasn’t taking it personally as you have been.
I can see how upsetting it is when you’re proven wrong so consistently. but again please act with some integrity and admit when you’re wrong instead of disappearing or changing your screen name. Also refrain from lying too. i It’d go a lot farther to support what credibility you have left.
I’ll leave you with this. Refrain from calling others out if you don’t want them involved in your conversations. Learn how to take constructive feedback and admit when you’re wrong. Stop lying to make your point. You won’t be so angry and have to lash out others .
Acell10 – Take your childish behavior elsewhere. You are out of your league on this site. Your comebacks are weak and immature. Your insults are plentiful and unsubstantiated Your demeanor is that of a rebellious teenager who sucks at everything in life so he harasses others..
You’ll respond with some trash comment. We’ve seen it a 100 times and all we can do is shake our heads in disbelief. You lose every argument related to baseball because you have no understanding of the game so you insult the people that have to belittle your comments for being so ignorant.
This has been the trend for years now. Grow up and learn how to share websites with adults.
TF – I agree, he just wants to trash talk. It’s fine in certain places and situations, like playing basketball or having drinks in a bar, but this isn’t the place for it as it disrupts the discussions.
I always love a good debate, but trash talking just seems like a useless waste of time.
Please keep your politics to yourself, this is not the forum for it. thank you
So many comments in here saying fire Cora, as if he’s the one who extended sale, traded Betts, and got a lackluster return, and have been mid since.
Cod – Cora was indirectly responsible for Mookie being traded. It was Cora’s gross mismanagement in 2019 that led to John Henry’s decision to cut way back on spending and avoid large longterm contracts.
If the Sox make the postseason in 2019, Dombrowski doesn’t leave.
Don’t forget that Cora is pretty much responsible for ruining sale. His dumb ideas for managing pitching load in 2019 basically got him hurt.
I can’t respond to Fever because he has me blocked but Cora was also responsible for 2018 and our success in 2019. He is working with what we have and whether he was involved in getting players or not, that blame rests on the GM.
I don’t know why Fever is so upset over Cora. Yeah, he caught once for cheating, but that has nothing to his ability. ability.
A blind platypus could’ve managed that 2018 to a WS victory. Heck, they got there despite cora costing them over ten games during the regular season. He has no ability to manage a pitching staff or situationally in game. Plus, he’s cheated twice. That we know of…
Actually, our bullpen was a mess and he pulled the right strings at the right time. We had a closer who was not doing well at the time, and if I remember, people liked Cora then. People started disliking him after the cheating scandal came out.
As I’ve said, he does make some stupid choices but when the game was on the line, the gutsy choices paid off.
Judgement = Go back to the Yankee site. Please!! Your comments are so moronic and ill-informed it makes you seem pathetic.
Cora sucks. It’s just that simple. End of story.
I’m a Sox fan. And thanks for the tip. I’m really going to take you for word because you responded in such a friendly and helpful manner.
Considering your name has troll in it…
It’s easy to understand why people think you’re a Yankees fan. :-). Fans of two clubs have questions! In fairness, I haven’t noticed you trolling Yankee fans in their threads, or I just haven’t looked that hard.
Judgement – Compliment the biggest cheater in the history of the game and you are going to take fire. NOBODY ever liked Cora as a player or a manager. He sucked at both and has since day 1. Who sits Mookie in April (2018) during a week when you have an off day and a rain out? Only a guy who has no business being a manager. It’s been downhill since April 2018.
The guy sucks and anyone who chooses to compliment him has asked for whats coming from millions of disgruntled Cora haters. He’s done nearly as much destruction as Bloom. Sale and Price pitched fine for Farrell. Why not Cora? Both were annual top contenders for the Cy Young. Both HAD great careers until Cora. And that’s just two things he destroyed!!! He sucks and always has sucked.
Next thing. Learn to read. It’s trollfree because after years of people like you making insults because they didn’t like what I wrote the website has cracked down on people who simply insult. Make a baseball point and there won’t be issues. Liking Cora is a baseball point that needed to be refuted vigorously. Commenting on my name, that’s a troll move.
Codeeg – Watch some games to get a feel for his lack of skills if you don’t believe the billions of fans who hate the lowlife cheater.
1 – Can’t manager pitchers
2 – Can’t set a line-iup
3 – Can’t not cheat
4 – Can’t not lie
5 – Can’t comprehend how much he is hated by Red Sox Nation
6 – Can’t run a successful off season when his elite roster wins a WS despite him.
7 – Can’t figure out which pitcher should come in.
8 – Can’t figure out when to take a pitcher out
9 – Can’t stop over playing the bench players who he relates to
10 – Can’t do a press conference without lying while sounding like he has marbles in his mouth.
Face it. Cora sucks.
I’m a fan of another team (not AL East) , but using the manager as a scapegoat is such a tired take.
Code – Are you saying you’re one of those few people who actually think the manager has no impact on winning or losing? So all those teams that have caught fire in the past immediately after a midseason managerial change, you’re saying those were just crazy coincidences and the teams would have done the same even if the fired manager had stayed on?
Well alrighty then …
I’d rather keep Varitek and trade Cora to the Giants for a signed Bill Bathe 1991 Topps card…
Who says no?
Bill Bathe
I knew Red Sox Nation would be saying WTF…
This is simple, fire Cora and hire Tek. Tek leaving to manage another team would be heartbreaking to see.
Cora is technically only here thru 2024. Get Tek to wait one more year and if Cora doesn’t produce next year, let him walk. If he does, maybe consider that front office position he wants as an assistant GM of scouting or something. I really hate the thought of Tek leaving but he’s destined to manage some day and managers are hired to eventually be fired. I dont like the thought of that happening either.
B-Strong – Dumping Cora is the answer. He hurts us when he manages and he costs money. Lets turn that into – He only costs us money.
I’m still a big believer in letting the new GM pick the manager, coaching staff and reshape the roster. Whether it’s a POBO who dictates to the GM what to do or simply a POBO/GM, the new guy should pick everyone below him and the roster.
We can’t lose him on the Red Sox. If we do, all respect is gone from what little we have right now.
@this point just hire the girl they interviewed
Are they going to sew a “M” into his uniform so we can all be sure he is actually the manager?
JV is not impressed with the offer. See photo.
All this talk of swapping Tek for Cora calls to mind the time when the two Yankees pitchers held separate press conferences to announce that they swapped wives in the 70’s.
Anyone who sticks his mitt in A Rods douchnozzle mug is okay by most fans
Always a former catcher for a manager position
I suggest that everyone favoring Varitek as a manager – and BTW, he has no experience managing at any level – consider the case of Ryne Sandberg. Remember him? There was a guy who was a far, far better player than Varitek, who was a team leader without needing to sew a “C” on his uniform, and who was respected, if not actually loved, by players and fans around the league. His three years of managing the Phillies: 119-159 record, two last place finishes, contempt from fans.
Liking a guy as a player hardly qualifies as a good reason for wanting them as a manager.
It’s not like Tek asked to have C on his uniform it was a sign of respect by the team and it’s leaders.
You are comparing Apples and Oranges. Varitek was a catcher was considered one of the best game callers in baseball he is widely looked at as future big league manager.
Ryne Sandburg was a popular guy. He was an excellent player no doubt about that but an excellent player doesn’t mean you will make a good manager. The manager on the field should be your catcher he’s the closest thing to a position player who’s a field manager on the team. Varitek was always looked at as a leader and cerebral future manager even he was playing. Your comparison between the two players isn’t a good one.
In all seriousness, bring back multiple members of the 89 team. Make Will Clark manager, Matt Williams bench coach…
Brenly could cch 3rd n Dravecky act as pitching cch
It’s sad to imagine Tek with anyone besides the Sox. But glad he’s getting these types of opportunities, he deserves them
fraud – I agree, seeing Tek in another uni would be wrong … just as wrong as when Dewey played for the Orioles.
In order to be a Major League manager, a person has to speak don’t they?
team – I get what you’re saying, but I think it’s fine to have different managerial styles and clearly Tek is not one to engage in meaningless chit-chat. He is one serious, intense dude. He speaks when something needs to be said, rather than running his mouth all the time like some managers. And he’s always available whenever anyone wants to talk.
Also keep in mind the many coaches that would be under him. Heck, Krapler had 13 coaches when he was managing the Giants … plenty of people for the players to speak to.
Cora is dreadful at in game mgmt and role assignments much less choosing the right horse for the right course…the finger of death for who, when, & where during a game is the biggest part of being a manager. The in-game skills are what’s needed in Boston. Tek should be a hard no & promoted in 2025 to Boston’s manager if not sooner! Don’t leave JV.
