Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff has a right shoulder injury, which will keep him from playing in the upcoming NL Wild Card Series, manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). Whether or not he can pitch later in the postseason, should the Brewers advance, remains to be seen.
The All-Star right-hander spent four months of the 2023 campaign on the injured list with a subscapular strain in his right shoulder. However, he returned in early August and looked healthy down the stretch, pitching to a 2.59 ERA in nine starts while averaging more than six innings per game. His shoulder bothered him during his final outing of the regular season, but initially, he responded well to treatment. Thus, the severity of his injury came as a surprise for the Brewers; the team was counting on him to start game two of the Wild Card series against the Diamondbacks.
Woodruff plans to get a second opinion on his shoulder, but the team isn’t expecting an update until the end of the week. While they will hope for the best, Counsell and his staff will have to prepare for the worst-case scenario, in which their number two starter is out for the rest of the playoffs.
The Brewers have not yet announced who will start on Wednesday in Woodruff’s place, although Freddy Peralta seems to be the most likely candidate. The 27-year-old pitched his first qualifying season this year, making 30 starts with a 3.86 ERA. It’s harder to guess who will start for Milwaukee in a potential game three. Wade Miley and Adrian Houser are presumably the leading candidates; each had a solid year in 2023, and each is coming off a strong September. Miley pitched to a 3.04 ERA in his final five games, while Houser put up a 2.14 ERA in four September starts. The elder Miley probably has the edge, thanks to his veteran experience and his lefty arm, but Counsell will surely take his time thinking about individual matchups before he makes a decision.
While the Brewers have rotation depth to call upon, this still comes as a huge blow to their postseason hopes. At full strength, Woodruff is one of the better starting pitchers in the National League, and this team was counting on a powerful one-two punch of Corbin Burnes and Woodruff to lead them over the Diamondbacks. No one was more upset about the news than Woodruff himself, who choked up as he told reporters, “We’ve got a good clubhouse. And I want to be a part of that. Sitting here now, I may not.”
Oh… Boy…
What in Teddy Higuera is going on here!
Teddy Higuera Version 2
Terrible!
That’s a big blow excuse the obviousness
The Brewers need to keep the young speedy dbacks off the bases and losing Woodruff doesn’t help. Looks like the only NL central rep might get bounced early.
That sucks for you guys…
Why do the baseball gods hate the Brewers…
Seriously. Wtf. I always say WI can’t have nice things.
Hasn’t hated them yet. Yeah it’s bad, but play the games first
Probably because Bud Selig stole the team from Seattle in 1970 and orchestrated the 1994 strike, cancellation of the World Series, and attempt to bust the MLBPA and institute a salary cap.
Now I’m certainly no Bud Selig fan, but I’m still wondering how he orchestrated this heist.
Stole the team from Seattle? The owners declared bankruptcy and sold them. Strange reconstruction of history.
Whatever did or didn’t happen pales in comparison to what Selig, Jerry Reinsdorf, Ewing Kauffman, and their cabal of small-market owners pulled in 1994-95, cancelling the World Series, failing to bargain in good faith, and illegally trying to field replacement teams in their attempt to bust the MLBPA and force a salary cap down the players’ throats.
The only two people to respond, did so to the stealing of the Brewers portion, of which you did not back up.
Sue me.
What he did around the 1994 strike was more damaging to the game and my main point.
What he did around the strike was more damaging to the game and was my main point.
Selig was a pretty sleazy guy.
Great, so stick to the things that make him sleazy and don’t make other stuff up, makes you look stupid.
Of course he was sleazy, dude was literally a used car salesman.
My main point.
If you think I look stupid, good for you. I would have to care for it to matter to me. This isn’t a high school cafeteria.
Doesn’t matter if you care or not. I care to correct you when you are simply making things up. What a ridiculous life to have to feel the need to do that, then when someone calls you out, you just shift away and don’t say you’re wrong. It’s OK to be wrong in life.
I know it is, and that’s why I don’t care what you think.
If I was wrong about the Seattle thing, fine. It’s hardly a matter of life and death, it doesn’t matter 53 years later, and it certainly did you no harm.
Try to lighten up and let things go.
Says the guy still bitter about Bud Selig.
I’m not bitter about him as I don’t live in Seattle or Milwaukee, and the strike was 29 years ago.
And however I may feel, what’s it to you, anyway?
Try to lighten up and let things go.
Not sure if you noticed, but you’re posting to a website talking about sports. If you don’t want people to respond to you, you can just say these things to yourself.
I’m not holding on to anything.
Says the guy who keeps responding to that which doesn’t concern him.
You too can just say these things to yourself.
Huh? I’m not the guy telling the other guy to let things go. You seem to have trouble with your own advice. Doesn’t surprise me as you tend to say things even you don’t believe.
2019 Yelich
2021 Williams (self inflicted moron)
2023 woodruff
Another hypothetical deep playoff run by the Brewers
Beating Arizona without woodruff isn’t the issue. Facing LA without your full arms is a death sentence
Brewers would still win; they’re due some good fortune.
Dbacks need to get their bats going. Not seeing Woodruff will help. Missing Burnes and Peralta would come in handy, as well.
Hoping they get hurt too or?
Dbacks would still lose lol
Ahh to have the benefit of hindsight
If you’ve been watching the snakes lately you know it doesn’t matter who is pitching. Snakes are currently swinging wet newspapers and recently are a threat to get no hit every night.
I mean, it’s basically a given they’re seeing Burnes and Peralta.
Fuuuuuuudge!!! Damn it
Must be playoff time.
I’m starting to get what Mets fans felt like when they had Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard and so many of those young, promising pitchers. The Brewers have a 3 headed monster in Burnes, Woodruff and Peralta yet due to injuries, they’ve never all 3 been able to put it together in a single season without injury. The closest was 2021 where they each made at least 27 starts. ERA? 2.43, 2.56 and 2.81 respectively
the days of winning with dominant starting pitching in the playoffs are over. starters rarely make it to Oct healthy and it’s very tough going through a line-up 3-4 times nowadays with so much data
Maybe, but these guys, when healthy, can do it. I’ll still take Miley or Houser in game 3. Next dude up. Counsell has trotted out McGill as the opener before. It really wouldn’t shock me if he did that in game 3, bringing Miley in after. Vary the speed and approach, keep the batters guessing.
Woody wants to be in there, we know that. He’ll be good if we can get to the Dodgers, but they’ll focus on the D-Backs right now.
Not true, pitching still wins but Brewers just couldn’t get runs before
To King Good Comment!
wow
You can say that again!
That’s a tough blow.
That’s a helluva tough break, but to be totally real, the Brewers aren’t the only team having to go into the playoffs down a starter or three.
Blue Skies: I believe TB have four starters out, yet they still won 90 games. Incredible.
The Dodgers had only one of their opening day starters make it to the end of the season, and that was Kershaw with all of 131 innings. Nearly a third of their starts were made by rookies. And yet they won 100. Baseball can be one crazy game.
Sweet! Everything’s going good for the Dodgers! Fried, Morton now Woodruff. Ruff break for the Brewers ^_^
Here come the Marlins – D-Backs NLCS!
I would LOVE that! Burger for the Marlins and Zevala for Arizona. Two ex-White Sox who deserved better than playing for the Titanic that is the south siders.
Gloating is bad form. The Dodgers took their starting pitching hits all season long and I sure didn’t want to hear any booyahs about that.
Dodgers have their own pitching issues as well.
It can go really well for the Dodgers as their rookies are relatively new and unpredictable or horribly wrong, considering the rookies and might get shaky in tough spots. I don’t mind Julio Urias being out, he did horrible against the Braves this year.
Missippi: Bad walk year for Urias. The thing about teams like the Dodgers, Braves and Phillies that were so dominate during the regular season is that it really doesn’t matter in the PO. Last year all three teams that won 100+ games didn’t go far in the PO, so you never know.
Urias goes from getting a nine-figure contract to pitching in Asia. Talk about a bad walk year….
Ruff long gone!
Well, I’m glad that I didn’t submit my Playoff Brackets picks yet.
Too bad for all of you who already did and had the Brewers going far. That just took a hit. I think a couple of them on MLB TV that showed their picks earlier had the Brewers making a run.
I think the Brewers can still defeat the Diamondbacks, but then after that, with Woodruff out, it’ll be an uphill battle for them.
acoss: The DBacks have Gallen and Kelly in the first two games. They might not need more than that although it should be a good matchup between Gallen and Burnes.
D-Backs fans might need a Gallen of beer by the end of the week.
Gallen and Kelly aren’t Until games 2 and 3
Avenger:
Oh that’s some good matchups then. I still take the Brewers, but Diamondbacks aren’t going down easy.
Acoss, The Dbacks dont have Gallen till game 2 and Kelly till game 3, In game 1 it will be Brandon Pfaadt. (3-9, 5.72 Era)
BrewCrewFan,
Brewers win this series easy. I’m rooting for the Brewers, I want the NL Central to win big this year even if I am a Chicago teams fan.
Counsell has his Brewer farewell playoff tour cut short right off the bat. News at 11.
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
Soft. Seems like he already knows they’re not going anywhere anyway. If he were on a serious contender, he pitches through it and joins the great stories and the legends of October.
Milwaukee can still make it to the NLDS. Two incredibly strong starts from Burnes & Peralta and a QS from Miley & it’s not an impossible thread to weave.
There goes the ONLY advantage the Brewers had going into the postseason. It will undoubtedly and unfortunately be a short run with these developments.
Just need to squeak by DBacks. Then we bring back Dodger killer Eric Lauer lol. Yes. Lauer was 7-1 with a 2.37 ERA in 11 career starts against the Dodgers, prior to giving up 3 runs in 3.1 innings in May of this year. His .875 winning percentage is the best among active pitchers vs. Los Angeles with at least eight decisions.
my biggest fan,Mrs Superfan, told me about this an hour ago. Feel terrible. Not over but!!!!
As a diehard Dbacks fan who grew up in Wisconsin (Milwaukee Braves fan), I’ll enjoy this series. With Woodruff’s injury the DbCks have a good chance to start a Cinderella team run.
Dbacks went 1-1 against Burnes, but that was way back in April and June. Dbacks won both series against the Brewers, so Dbacks have a 4-2 advantage this year.
Dbacks are a very young team with no Playoff experience, though there was a playoff atmosphere in the last month of the season. However, this young team hasn’t cleared that hurdle to be a great team that wins tight games in the clutch (see the first 2 games of the final series against the Astros). The 2 starters after Gallen and Kelly are rookies (Pfaadt and Nelson), who could be brilliant or totally implode.
If the offense starts clicking again, the Dbacks could go on a major run, The defense and running game are elite. If the bullpen stays on their month long run of excellence and the rookie starters shine watch out.
You probably noticed all the “Ifs”. That’s my way of saying I’d love to see this happen, but I’m not sure the Dbacks are good enough yet to go on a deep run.
Dbacks in 3.
Some ruff news. They wood be lucky to have him back for the NLDS.
Miley came in like a wrecking ball but straightened things out. Her dad would be proud
“Whether or not he can pitch later in the postseason…” No worries now. He’ll have all offseason to recover. Along with the rest of the team.
