The Giants made a significant change this afternoon, firing skipper Gabe Kapler as his fourth season at the helm was coming to a close. Bench coach Kai Correa will serve as the interim manager for the final series against the Dodgers.
President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi spoke with reporters after Kapler’s dismissal. He indicated the front office’s preference is to have a new hire in place by the beginning of the free agent period (link via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle). That starts five days after the conclusion of the World Series.
“It’s a pretty universal trait that you want a manager who players want to play for, whether it’s young players and getting them motivated to get the most out of them or free agents who have heard your manager has a good reputation,” Zaidi told the S.F. beat. “I think that’s going to matter a lot.”
Zaidi did not indicate that Kapler’s presence as manager was harmful to the team’s free agent pursuits, to be clear. Yet he noted the club had decided to look for “new and different leadership in our clubhouse, a different dynamic there.” After making the call to move on from Kapler, it’s understandable they’d prefer to have a new manager in place as they try to sell the organization to upcoming free agent targets.
Over his five-year tenure leading baseball operations, Zaidi and his staff have come up short on multiple pursuits of top-of-the-market talents. They pursued Bryce Harper over the 2018-19 offseason but reportedly balked at the long-term offer he was seeking (and eventually found from Philadelphia). San Francisco made a run at Aaron Judge last winter but came up short when the defending MVP returned to the Yankees on a record-setting deal. They agreed to terms on a $350MM pact with Carlos Correa, only for that to fall through on the physical.
The Giants have been active in the middle tiers of free agency but haven’t signed a guarantee larger than the $44MM Carlos Rodon deal under Zaidi. With roughly $110MM in guaranteed money on the books for next season, San Francisco could try again to land a top-of-the-market player. They’ll surely be among the teams courting Shohei Ohtani, while Cody Bellinger could be a fallback target if Ohtani heads elsewhere. San Francisco had interest in Bellinger — with whom Zaidi is familiar from their time with the Dodgers — before he signed with the Cubs on a $17.5MM bounceback deal last offseason. After an excellent rebound campaign, Bellinger seems in line to top $200MM on his next free agent trip.

Poach Melvin or see if Stephen Vogt still wants to manage. My top 2 choices anyway…
tangerinepony
Melvin’s not leaving SD. The pads will give him 1 more year
Not a clever name
Tangerine pony, after this last month I think he gets more than that. They may have came just short but I think we saw what that team is finally capable of, and I say that as a SF Giants fan. There are a lot of egos to manage on the Padres and I think that was the problem most the year, but I am pretty sure Melvin is the guy to do it, unless you can get Dusty Baler he’s probably the best available for it.
andyhighroller
#BringBackDonnieEcker G’s had the best offense in the league and led MLB in HR’s without a single 30HR player, just 11 that hit between 10-20. Ecker got 39HR out of Belt in 140 games between 2020-2021 and had Crawford looking like an MVP.
Since leaving the Giants, where has Ecker been? Oh, just sitting as Bruce Bochy’s bench coach in Texas, with another elite offense.
Ecker is still only 37, but he knows how to get athletes to swing the bat, and it can’t hurt for him to have spent 2yrs under Bochy and 2yrs under Kapler. Feel how you like about both but nobody can say they don’t bleed professionalism.
Kapler isn’t a bad manager. Vegas had Giants win totals at 80.5 before the season. This roster is full of D+ to B- talent, and even the best managers can only squeeze so much out of the likes of Wilmer Flores, Alex Cobb, Logan Webb, and Joc Pederson.
Neon Cop
They’re gonna get Shohei to pick his favorite this summer.
vtadave
I think Ohtani wants to win.
Neon Cop
Watch much baseball? SF won 107 games 2 years ago and have been hovering around 500 ever since, despite a totally star-less roster. Ohtani makes them an annual playoff team. Plus they have tons of money to spend, and their future is younger and brighter than SD/LA’s. Try thinking next time?
Kenneth Powers
Joe Maddon would be a nice upgrade over Krapler.
prov356
Maddon should have never been fired by the Angels. I’m hoping Nevin is gone and maybe Maddon comes back in 2024 as something. If not, Maddon should be managing somewhere.
Fred
Hire Madden, sign Ohtani, trade for Soto.
prov356
I’ve always predicted Ohtani will land with the Giants. SF has the money to offer big too.

I am a Giants Fan thru and thru. I am also Not viewing the team thru rose colored glasses.
I cancelled my cable Sept 1st. Because I knew the team was having issues, to say the least. I didn’t even think, at the time, that they would finish above .500 for the season. I made a gamble and I’m not happy they are losing, But my instincts kicked in.
– I am curious how this free agent manager search is going to go. With Free agent players, the Giants have issues. At least the Stars. Maybe they can swing Ohtani ? That would Great. Definitely would give me more purpose to go down there to see a live game. But managerwise – Here are some thoughts off the top of my head to what kind of personality and experience I would want.
First things first. When I heard the shots of whiskey in the clubhouse, that’s a red flag. It shows party atmosphere. And Joc Pederson being the guy, Who Has A Ring Already, and is incredibly out of shape needs to go. Also Kap is a platoon player from his playing days. At least later on. He was a part of a lot of switches and knows that life. We don’t want that. We need a Guy who has experience in the minors. Maybe for years. Definitely the majors would be best. But we need seasoning. Also I’m not going to go on about what I think the front office needs to do regarding injuries and style of play, I’ll leave that alone for now.
Bochy would have been great. Smooth, hard when he needs to be, a father figure, experienced as hell, and laid back also when he needs to be. A great watcher of the game. (He’s doing well now isn’t he).
Not necessarily a Bochy, even if I miss him. But a baseball guy. Kap seems to be a style guy. A Prima Donna who acts like he isn’t. Not a lot of consistency in his presence as this ultra alpha in charge of everything. But also his lineups show not a lot of consistency.
– So overall an experienced guy who is more baseball than hand tattoos, who is consistent with his lineup and players. Can check the party scene at the door and earn it when appropriate. Is a father type figure for the young guys with a lot of young players. And possibly an ex pitching coach or catcher. To me those are the best guys.
And Farhan, Do your job better. Because you have one season starting now to get to the playoffs or your gone.
Fever Pitch Guy
Jay – Great post, I appreciate fans who don’t look at their team through rose colored glasses. Those who do devalue their own opinions.
One thing I disagree with is the shots of whiskey. One shot is not a party atmosphere, it just brings the team together and relaxes them a bit. The 2004 Red Sox did the same thing and we all know how that team turned out.
solaris602
Jay, you’re a great antidote to the wine & cheese crowd who always develop an irrational attachment to players and executives regardless of results. To add to your points, Zaidi shouldn’t be given a break because he “tried” to shop at the top of the market multiple times but always came away with mid-level FAs. Pederson is indeed outta shape mentally and physically. Kapler was only a symptom of the problem. Craig Counsell might be the answer, but I just picture the ghost of Billy Martin patrolling the dugout – it’s fun to dream

Until they get some more homegrown talent in there, the SF Giants field manager really won’t matter.

When I read from last year describing his office “Several bottles of good liquor — mostly scotch, Kapler’s preference — and fine wine sit on a bar cart. (His older brother, Jeremy, describes Gabe’s scotch collection by saying, “He likes it, but it’s probably like someone say A large framed photo of Nelson Mandela looms over the desk. Einstein is on a different wall, Muhammad Ali a third. Several books, including “Journals” by Kurt Cobain and “Sister Outsider” by Audre Lorde, line up with geometric exactitude on a coffee table.” I say that’s a guy trying too hard and these obvious icons are similar to the sensibilities of Colts owner Jim Irsay’s art ajd pop culture collection. Not really deep. So I think it’s a good move before he gets involved in any Ohtani negotiations. He’d probably talk samurai swords or something.
gilgunderson
It’s always fascinating to me when people like Kapler and Irsay bring some new perspectives into the sporting world, but it’s too easy to veer into pretentiousness, and you have to deliver the results on the field. Both of them fail both of those tests. Coaches like Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich successfully pull it off. They’re better at relating to the players, media, and fans, but they’re also undeniable winners, which gives them credibility.

The Giants Fired the WRONG Guy. Zaidi built that Shittshow roster not Gabe.

Maybe the Giants should offer the job to Buster Posey.

that would be great but Posey is a family man and wouldn’t want to spend 162 game commitment being away fro. his fam

I recently read that Posey relocated his family back to the Bay Area. That doesn’t say to me that he’d take the managerial job, but it does speak to his level of involvement with the ownership group.

Jason Varitek would be (or will be) an excellent manager some day. Just not sure if he and his family are ready to leave the Boston area. He seems to have ‘lifetime’ roll with the Red Sox too. He’s definitely next in line for manager of the Red Sox once Cora leaves or is let go. Just wondering if he’s willing to wait for that or not. If not, he’d be an excellent choice to manage the Giants. He’s a no-nonsense guy and won’t put up with the party atmosphere at all. He is all baseball all the time.

Correa took himself out of the running with his bush move in his first game.
Redwolves3
Correa’s not a viable manager candidate. Would be another Zaidi puppet. No thanks.
BlueSkies_LA
Don’t know how to break this to you, but anyone hired to manage will be picked by Zaidi, and managers today are there to implement the FO game plan. So they’re going to get another FO guy. The way it works.
Dodgers commentators were really ripping into Correa after the game last night, especially for plunking Rojas on the hand and a half inning after Correa delayed the game for nearly ten minutes asking for a review of whether Rojas’ feet were completely on the dirt when Lynn delivered a pitch. A meaningless act in a meaningless game for the Giants. Then to hurt the starting SS? Really bad.
I’d be surprised and disappointed if Correa was managing today’s game. That backup duty usually falls to the bench coach anyway.
foppert1
Geez. So harsh.
Wasn’t the challenge successful ?
The man managing his first game should be prioritising just getting it all over with quickly ? Can’t be upsetting Lance Lynn ?
You sound convinced the plunking was deliberate. Ok. That’s your call. Not sure that’s the popular opinion though.
BlueSkies_LA
Harsh? Hmm. If you read back over my comment, you will see I was relating what Dodgers commentators were saying after the game. They saw it a pointless challenge in a meaningless game for the Giants. They also thought that pitching up and in to a guy with little power in a game that means nothing to the Giants was poor sportsmanship of the kind ballplayers tend to remember. This was coming from ballplayers, not me. So go argue with them, not me.
I have no idea if the plunk was deliberate, and I never said it was. So I don’t see where you find me being convinced, except in your own mind. Maybe that isn’t the best place to look for what I believe. And of course how Lynn felt about it is also completely irrelevant to what I think.
Got anything else?
foppert1
No you didn’t. That’s why I wrote “you sound convinced”. I’ve taken the advice and read it again, and I’m still coming up with similar. All I can do is keep trying.
All due respect to the Dodger commentators, but as a Giants fan, I think Correa should be making in game decisions that help his team win. I’d appreciate that at the end of a tough year.He did that. Well done Kai. 1 for 1 on the review stat sheet.
There is also the small fact that the time taken for a review, is totally out of his control. He isn’t responsible for the 10minutes.
As for Lance, I was assuming that Lance yelling at Correa was the perceived link between the successful review and Correa being so upset about the successful review, that he was motivated to display the unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Sorry. Generally find your comments insightful…..but really……you would be surprised if he was managing todays game ? C’mon, there’s just a hint of over reaction there.
BlueSkies_LA
The world is full of people who are happy tell you what you said without listening to what you actually said, and tell you how you feel without asking how you feel.
I don’t know if Lynn barking at the Giants dugout contributed to what came next, but it really doesn’t matter, only that it did happen, and between them these incidents created (more) bad feeling between these teams. Jerry Hairston was especially adamant that payback is going to happen, maybe not over the next couple of games, but some time. Ballplayers know how this game works from the inside, so he’s probably right. Nomar Garciaparra seemed to agree, though less adamantly.
So as I said, your argument is with them, not me. I am reporting what I heard. No need to read anything into it.
foppert1
Ok. Understood. I’ll amend.
Harsh call by the Dodger commentators.

Matt Williams or does his health issues remove him from consideration…
lukentroy
I didn’t realize Matt Williams was battling cancer. I’m glad to read he is doing well with his treatment and still being able to coach 3B for the Padres. I think he would be a great candidate for the Giants manager position if he is up for it. He was a major piece of those great late 80s early 90s teams, definitely is a guy who wants to win. Most importantly wish him good health and a full recovery.
aussiegiants53
I feel like Kapler is the fall guy here. FZ has had plenty of time to put his finger prints on this org and he hasn’t quite done that. Farm system is better but other than Harrison, what other touted prospects have they got? Made some good moves, made some terrible moves. Interesting off season for the Giants for sure
foppert1
Touted or not, many of Zaidi’s fingerprints are here now. The evidence suggests a few of them didn’t relate to Kapler and dropped their bundle at a time when the opposite was required. Kapler pays the price for that shortcoming. Seems reasonable to me. I love Kaplers intensity, but I’m 53.
SweetBabyRayKingsThickThighs
Kapler did an alright job considering the team had no real power threats or starters outside Webb and Cobb. Can’t exactly make the postseason with a team full of platoon bats and utility players
Kenneth Powers
Kapler was not a leader of men. Analytics binders don’t lead teams to the postseason. His fraud was finally realized.

I wouldn’t want to play for Kapler. As a hitter I like consistency. Hitting in the same spot in the lineup, knowing my role. Under Kapler you don’t get that and on top of that you could be having a great game and he would yank you because the math says otherwise.
I’m not sure starting pitchers would want to deal with this opener style of managing a game and coming in after an inning.
Kapler may have been doing what the FO was telling him but great players, don’t want to play that style of game.
filihok
Deke
1) you’d be thrilled to have a chance to play in the Major Leagues, so your first paragraphs is absolutely false. You’d play in any role they wanted and you’d absolutely love it.
2) This idea that players are so weak-minded that they can’t handle the slightest change is, well, not thinking very highly of these players.
3) tough for the players. The F/O and management are to put players in the best chance to succeed, if that’s platooning or coming in as a follower, the players need to deal with it. Of course, the management team needs to communicate to the players WHY they feel it’s the best option
4) the contradictions of fans is… hilarious? Out of one side of their mouth they say that they want players that play for the name on the front of the jersey not the one on the back. Then they say that players don’t want to do this and can’t do that. It’s almost like it has nothing to do with the players and is all about that fan’s ideology.

Zaidi is not a baseball man. Did not grow up loving the game. There is only so much you can do as an Ivy Leaguer until you are exposed as someone who should not be in the place you’re in. But, this is Major League Basebakl today; you do not need a baseball background, you do not need to have an appreciation for the game and your elite education will open doors you should not walk through.
On top of that, it’s possible there is a culture problem within the organization. Kapler should use this experience as a teachable moment.

The reality is that the next manager will be a Kapler clone. Why? Farhan will want another puppet who agrees with his philosophy and does what the puppeteer asks. You want bold? Try Sandy Alomar, Jr., Rodney Linares, Tony Mansolino, Matt Quatraro, or Ron Washington. Instead I think the Giants go with Kai. Puppet.
