West Notes: Scherzer, Trout, Nola, Martinez

By Nick Deeds | September 2, 2023 at 7:14pm CDT

Rangers ace Max Scherzer exited his start against the Twins after six innings yesterday due to what he described to reporters (including Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today) as a “little forearm tightness” and wasn’t sure he’d be able to pitch the seventh. That being said, Scherzer downplayed the severity of the issue, suggesting that his priority is to ensure that the issue doesn’t “turn into a forearm strain or Tommy John.”

Even though Scherzer downplays the issue, it’s surely worrisome for Rangers fans that he’s facing any issue at all. The veteran right-hander has posted a phenomenal 2.21 ERA (198 ERA+) and 2.48 FIP in his first six starts with the club since being acquired from the Mets ahead of the trade deadline back in July. With Jacob deGrom out for the year and Nathan Eovaldi on the injured list already, Scherzer will be key for a Rangers club looking to stay in a three-way race for the AL West crown that they were dominating earlier in the season, to say nothing of his importance as a key cog in their projected postseason rotation alongside fellow deadline acquisition Jordan Montgomery. In the event Scherzer misses a start or two while erring on the side of caution regarding his forearm, Texas could turn to right-hander Owen White or lefties Cody Bradford and Martin Perez to fill in for the future Hall of Famer when his turn in the rotation next comes up on Wednesday.

More from MLB’s West divisions…

  • Superstar Mike Trout spoke with reporters (including Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register) regarding the future of the Angels organization this afternoon. Anaheim, of course, waived a number of pending free agents including prized deadline addition Lucas Giolito earlier this week, effectively conceding the 2023 campaign in a failed bid to duck under the luxury tax threshold before the season ends. “There are going to be some conversations in the winter, for sure.” Trout said, “Just to see the direction of everything and what the plan is.” Trout refused to comment on the possibility of a trade when asked if he could imagine a scenario where he would ask to be moved, though with two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani likely departing for free agency this offseason and a protracted rebuild potentially on the horizon for the Angels, it would certainly be understandable if the 32-year-old Trout wished to continue his career elsewhere in hopes of reaching a World Series.
  • Padres catcher Austin Nola has had a brutal year at the plate in 2023, slashing just .146/.260/.192 in 154 trips to the plate with San Diego. An explanation for those struggles has seemingly been uncovered, as Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune relays that Nola has been diagnosed with oculomotor dysfunction, an issue that impacts the brain’s ability to coordinate eye movement. Nola referenced Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo and his issues with post-concussion syndrome as a catalyst for his decision to discuss symptoms, which included fogginess and headaches, with the Padres. The Padres have been using a catching tandem of Gary Sanchez and Luis Campusano in recent weeks as Nola tried to work things out at the Triple-A level. Nola hopes to return to the field in the minors before the Triple-A season ends on September 24.
  • Dodgers slugger J.D. Martinez is trending toward a return to the big league club next weekend, per the Orange County Register’s Bill Plunkett. Plunkett relays that Martinez will begin a brief rehab assignment at Triple-A later this week and in the meantime will take swings at Camelback Ranch in Arizona. Martinez, 35, has been on the injured list for the past two weeks due to groin tightness and was slashing .256/.309/.547 with 25 home runs and a 126 wRC+ in 390 trips to the plate before going on the shelf.

I wonder if Nola’s physical problems has anything to do with Michael Fulmer hitting him in the face with a pitch during ST.

30 Parks: Harper chose the Phillies because his wife is from NJ and it was close enough where she’d be able to visit her family. Trout is from NJ. It might be his chance to win a WS. Then again, the Angels might not trade him there.

The Phillies do not have the farm system to get Trout and even if they did would it be worth it at this point in his career when he hasn’t played close to a full season since 2019?
On the wrong side of 30 with 7 years and nearly $260 million left on his contract would be a mighty hard sell

Seems .like you are contradicting yourself

You say the Phillies don’t have the prospects to trade for Teout, then bring up the fact that his contract makes him a not very valuable asset.

As is, the Amgels would likey have to give more talent away to get someone to take on Trout’s full contract. The Phillies would get a prospect, not give any up.

Of course, that’s only one way to even out the contract.

Another is for the Angels to pay the contract down. If the Angels paid it down to the point where both teams thought it was a fair price for Trout, the Angels should be willing to trade that contract for a prospect of basically 0 value.

The most likely scenario, of course, is that the Angels pay down a lot of Trout’s contract so that his expected production is higher than his contract value. They’d then expect the prospect return to make up for that difference.

You know him better than Smacky. Trout is still likely to spend much of the off-season in New Jersey, where he likely is more comfortable.

I have no idea what he will do, but raising a kid in So Cal is a lot more difficult than Raising a kid in South New Jersey.

The LA media sure doesn’t think he cares about winning as he’s been in the playoffs once and hasn’t asked to be traded or gotten loud about complaining about the team to management. It’s been the narrative out here for years. He didn’t have to sign the extension.

He had the chance to go to Philly and he didn’t take it. He decided to stay on a bad team in a State with a very high income tax. That could lead one to believe that he doesn’t care about winning as much as staying where he is.

Not one writer in the LA market has said that Trout doesn’t care about winning. The guys that are with the team all the time see how he prepares and how he plays day in and day out.

You know who complains publicly? Losers. Players that are not adding to the team chemistry or the bottom line.

Trout unfortunately for the Angels, if they do decide to move him, and of course if he agrees to a new start, will not get the return that he would have gotten 2 maybe 3 seasons ago….his best years are behind him how…still a really good player but not the GOAT he was considered to be back when……

One player does not carry a team to the playoffs. No one. 12 ABs is not even close to a large enough sample size to make any indication of player ability.

Trout is the undisputed best player of the last decade. There is really no argument against that.

filihok; Trout got a huge payday in the spring of 2014. And he was bigtime in the regular season (MVP). Great stuff.

This article says he’s a superstar. Probably; maybe? To your point, small post season sample size to truly know . That said; superstars show up regardless of time of season and time of the game. .083 in 2014 post season (and made the last out against KC). IMO, unless he was playing with injury, that regular season MVP slash line should have effortlessly carried in to the post season.

Do you know what does mean something? That he played well enough for the entire season to be the MVP of the league.

Stassi is dead weight and probably shopped over the winter. Fletcher too seems like a change of scenery candidate.

There is zero reason to believe Rendon will provide any more value than any of those players next season or any of the remaing 3 years on his contract

They needed a CFer and the market for CFers was near bone dry in the off season. I sure wouldn’t have wanted them to outbid Cohen for Nimmo and be paying $25MM a year for him the next seven years. They had a deep pitching staff until injuries and under performance hit them this season. They were dealing from strength. How big a difference would Montgomery make? Two wins? They’d still have a losing record. Easier to see why they did the deal with context and when looking at the bigger picture. Montgomery is a free agent this off season, but I sure hope they don’t pay to bring him back based on the projected contract.

      Difficult to watch this.

But as with Starling Marte of the Mets, Tyler O’Neill of the Cardinals, multiple While Sox sluggers over the years and quite a few others, the style of play in MLB has never lent itself well to muscle-bound / weightlifter types over a period of time. They tend to go on for a while, then suffer periods of injuries where they’re incapacitated for the better part of years. Am primarily talking position players here. Can’t seem to think of muscle-bound pitchers succeeding for even that amount of time. I’ve seen big players succeed. But not guys that seem to lack range of motion.

Most MLB players do lift weights to some degree to build up strength. But they don’t become muscle-bound.

Unlike other team sports, baseball players can’t play their careers specializing in one thing – they’re either position players or pitchers, and have to perform all functions associated with the position they’re playing.

Mike Trout may have been a wonderful running back in the NFL for a period of time.

But it does seem an awful lot of players have fallen in love with big muscles. However, I wouldn’t say that players who have built themselves up are injury prone. I doubt Buehler, McKenzie or Sale have ever lifted anything heavier than five pounds, but they’ve all had injury problems. I don’t know if Trout’s physique has anything to do with living in the weight room or if it’s genetics. All I know is that if I was starting a team, Trout would be my first pick. Also, one thing I have noticed is how many fat pitchers there are. Lynn was asked about his weight a couple years ago. He said he works with a trainer during the off-season who gets him ready to pitch 32 games a year. Maybe, but it does seem that his belt is less visible every year.

Not the Red Sox way. Really hasn’t been in a long time. When a guy hits 30 and makes big dollars or is expected to, they usually let him walk.

Johnny damon, Jason Bay, Pedro Martinez, Nomar Garciaparra, Wade Boggs, the list goes on throughout their history.

So I don’t think even though this is a new regime, I think they continue the thoughts of letting guys walk at 30 and big dollars. Look at Mookie.

      Right

They’ve been instructed by corporations to look at thinks from the corporate point of view to foist the corporate point of view onto people so that most people default to the corporate point of view.

For example: lists of “worst contracts”. Those are always contracts that are bad for the team? Why aren’t those good contracts? They are good for the player.

Articles about teams getting rid of players usually frame it as the player getting old and won’t be worth their salary anymore. Again, looking at it from the ownership side.

Many bemoan the fact that the Angels have wasted Trouts best years, but few acknowledge that Trout is part of the problem. He’s only played 53% of the Angels games the past four seasons and hasn’t played more than 140 since 2016. It doesn’t matter how good you are if you can’t post.

Jacob deGrom was awesome in the 30 innings he pitched this year. Thirty innings of deGrom is better than 160+ IP by Dane Dunning?

Availability may be the greatest ability. You gotta post.

Without even considering their $35+ million annual salaries, how much good are Trout and deGrom doing their teams right now? Is the Rangers front office grateful for the 30 IP deGrom gave them or wishing he was available for the playoff push?

That’s the wrong question to ask

The better question to ask is how much they helped their team during the season

Trout added about 3 wins and deGrom between 1 and 2.

You can bet your ass the Rangers were happier to have had deGrom this year than they would have been if they had had Corey Kluber.

Same with Trout and, say, Jurickson Profar

Any knowledgeable baseball fan should understand that.

fili, you are comparing $185 million dollar man deGrom to Kluber as though the Rangers choices at $185M were deGrom vs Kluber. Same with $350+ million man Seager vs Profar. When a club spends $35M/year on a player such as Trout, deGrom, Rendon, Stanton, etc, they are looking for premium production, not one WAR. Availability matters, posting matters and contract size matters.

I cant change your mind and vice-versa. Again, agree to disagree. Have a good day.

I agree with him. The last few years Freeman has been better. For far too many years Garrett Anderson was better than Tim Salomon because Salmon didn’t play enough and GAs number one ability was his availability.

As a player, Anderson couldn’t carry Tim Salmons jock.

          I’m comparing two concepts

          The players are incidental

A player who provides 3 WAR in 81 games was more valuable than a player who provided 2 WAR in 162 games.

If you don’t understand that concept, I agree that it’s not worth any more of my time to attempt to explain it

Your not taking into account the opportunity cost. In the case of deGrom, what could the Rangers have done with $35+ million were it not allocated to a guy that can’t post? Would the Rangers be better if they had added seven $5M relief pitchers to their BP were the money not tied up in deGrom? Would they collectively have more than 0.8 WAR?

Also, your not taking into account the WAR of the SP6 that replaces deGrom. What is the average WAR of a SP4 or SP5? Is it 1, 0, -1, -2, -3? What is the average WAR of a SP6 that makes 27 starts because deGrom can’t post? For $35+ million, the Rangers get 0.8 WAR from deGrom and -4 WAR from the SP6 that replaces him in the rotation.

Astute of you to notice that I’m not bringing that up, since that’s not at all the point that I’m arguing

The point that I’m arguing is that “availability is the greatest ability”. Players who play less can be more productive than players that play more.

Even knowing Trout was going to miss half the games, I’d still rather have him than most players in baseball. And so would every reasonably knowledgeable baseball fan.

          Do you agree?

I certainly don’t want to get in the specifics of deGrom, and that’s because I don’t want to study it. I actually do my homework.

Availability is a great talent. People who can play everyday give the team stability. Not having to deal with plan “B” gives team’s advantages, providing plan “A” is solid.

That’s what made GA a valuable player. He wasn’t a great player by any means, but something can be said about him in the lineup everyday.

      Trout has a market value.

Baseball Trade Values has that value at -96 million

      baseballtradevalues.com/players/9604/

That’s based on his contract and expected performance. Of course, different people can have differing opinions on his expected performance which will alter his overall value.

Of course the Angels can trade him.

They have calculated his total value based on their expected performance for him.

The same is true for any players the Angels might receive in trade for him.

If the Angels feel the expected value of what they are getting in return is greater than what Trout provides, they’ll trade him. If not, they won’t.

Whatever Scherzer or Verlander does or doesn’t do for their current teams it’s no big deal. The Mets owner has subsidized each one to the current teams. Cohen is paying full price, and the other teams are benefiting by it. He took the risk. He’s paying some of the cost. Texas, and Houston along with their fans can just enjoy the fact they have two quality pitchers at discount prices.
