Here are three things we’re watching on this holiday Monday…
1. Labor Day games:
It is Labor Day, which means the slate of games is a little more interesting than a typical Monday. There are 11 games on the docket today, starting at 1:10 Central with the White Sox and Royals, continuing all the way until 8:38 with the Angels hosting the Orioles. Some matchups with playoff implications include the Astros facing off against the Rangers while the Guardians host the Twins.
2. Giolito’s debut with Guardians:
The Guardians were able to claim three pitchers off waivers from the Angels recently, which was a salary-dumping move for the latter club. That allowed the Guards to bolster their pitching staff for the home stretch as they try to chase the Twins in the American League Central, with Lucas Giolito being the most significant addition. He’ll be taking the ball today in Cleveland as the club starts an important three-game set against Minnesota.
3. Holliday to Triple-A:
Jackson Holliday is jumping from Double-A to Triple-A, reports Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com. The 19-year-old shortstop is the consensus #1 prospect in the sport and will now be joining his fourth level of the year. He’s gone from Single-A to High-A to Double-A and will now jump to the top level of the minors, having hit a combined .333/.451/.517 this year. Despite his youth, will the Orioles consider a fifth level with a major league promotion in the final weeks of the season?
I don’t see the Indi…,err, Guardi…,err, Cleveland directing their money toward signing an expensive starting pitcher to a long-term deal.
Yeah the Indians only really locked down their homegrown pitchers which in recent history was Kluber and Cookie
Neither would the Dodgers. They don’t sign big dollar washed up pitchers anymore. Ignore Thor. Lol.
@haringbone and even with Thor that was just a one year flier deal coming off of an okay postseason with Philly. It was a very low risk high reward signing
I still call them “Indians”. Those who don’t like it? Too bad.
Yeah, racism is fine…
Okay snowflake, Indians forever.
Agreed. Will always call them the Indians. As I will always call the Commanders the Redskins!!
Somehow I find this comment funny coming from someone named Red Fraggle
I still call them the Washington Senators. If you don’t like it, too bad.
If your going to use a logo, find a good one, not the most lame logo in all of pro sports.
You know what Chris Rock said years ago? Money will turn a bald spot into a combover part.
Ohtani is going wherever the check shows a minimum of $500M.
He isn’t getting $500 million with his arm injury. He will got a large contract.
He isn’t getting $500 million w8th his arm injury. He will get a large contract.
Can you repeat yourself? We didn’t hear you the first 2X
He won’t go to New York. Japanese players are a different animal. Not all about the benjamins with them.
Hideki Matsui, Masahiro Tanaka, and Ichiro would beg to differ.
Two of them signed where they wanted to originally. So did Shohei and has stated he wants to stay on the West Coast.
But keep dreaming.
Kodai Senga. I can probably keep going.
If only Cohen had been patient….Ohtani would’ve looked phenomenal in a Mets uniform.
Again, went where he wanted to go. He actually had bigger offers elsewhere as I recall being stated here.
Some guys like West Coast, some East Cosst, some neither.
Seattle has signed a ton of Japanese players, mainly because they probably have the best support system. Shogo Akiyama went to Cincinnati, Seiya Suzuki went to Chicago. You think Cincinnati outbid everyone?
If you want to go on dollars, though, keep in mind that the Dodgers far and away have the biggest local yearly TV contract income right now, which is where the large markets get their advantage over most of the other clubs.
*any teams uniform
Yeah, he would have fit right in with a bad arm…
@ThisOneBelongs
yeah you’re right, people from the same country all think the same. we’ve seen that in the last few elections here too.
Mac…reading is a skill.
I said way back Ohtani has stated he likes the West Coast, that’s why he’s not going to NY, in addition to it is not being all about the cash.
But if you want to talk about people in a country thinking the same, in Japan it is more about the we instead of about the me.
We could use some more of that here. I have some long time friends from there that shake their heads at that sometimes.
When the score was 10-0 in favor of the other team? Nobody looks “good” in that uniform sir
Senga had no issues going to NY just last year. None of these guys are getting G Cole money so basically any team is in play.
Why every team isn’t scheduled on Labor Day, I don’t understand.
It’s certainly not fan-friendly. It’s happened in recent seasons on July 4th too.
I see Hollliday getting called up for the postseason for sure.
He wasn’t on the roster by Sept 1, he’s ineligible for the postseason.
Can’t he be added to the roster if someone got injured
He can be on the postseason roster cuz he was in the organization. Doesn’t matter if he was on the 26-man or not. Just has to be an injury replacement for someone.
As stated above, he wouldn’t even be eligible to play in the postseason. Norfolk, the Orioles AAA affiliate is in the playoffs and they may want to expose him to a playoff atmosphere and seeing if he can thrive in AAA as well.
I’m not sure where exactly he’s going to play, but he’ll be in Baltimore on March 28th.
Holliday absolutely can be added to the playoff roster. All is needed is for the league to approve him replacing another injured (or “injured”) position player. It happens often.
Yeah the Tides are hosting the International League championship series. Odds are that he’ll be given the chance to make a big showing and fill seats with O’s fans in Virginia. Money now, money in the future.
There is no way he will be with the Orioles for the post-season!
The best time of the year: baseball and football season
Handegg is a moderately interesting sport to follow once baseball season is over.
Football is way more exciting to watch on TV, Baseball is my first love though
College football, yes.
NFL? No.
Why not both?
College football is exciting. NFL is boring, and the whole kneeling thing turned me away from those spoiled brats. Piss on ‘em.
Disagree. Only a select few players in college know how to actually block or throw. The talent disparity in most games makes them a snoozefest.
It’s also really weird to me that so many people root for college teams that aren’t their alma mater.
But to each their own
You had to know it was a perceived culture war or an otherwise political reason.
If Giolito continues to have some issues as a SP, do you suppose he converts to a reliever to save his career/ERA?
Jackson Holliday is ridiculous.
AAA doesn’t mean much at this time of year – the better players in A+, AA, and AAA have all been promoted.
With all the exceptional young players the Orioles have on their ML roster, this young man may well turn out to be the best.
Should be up sometime in 2024.
Almost for sure one of Ramon Urias and Jorge Mateo will be traded – possibly both if they resign Frazier.
Why would they re-sign Frazier?
@Curt
Amen to that. No offense to Frazier, but his year served it’s purpose okay (‘ish). O’s have pieces that can replace him and they can thank him and send his vet leadership on the way.
It’s almost as if the son of a MLB player who has had everything in his arsenal to succeed is taking advantage of said opportunity.
the son of an extremely talented and successful major leaguer no less
I think he looks like Greta Thunberg
“Greta is sexy”…. said no one ever.
His stats are sexy so who cares
Cavan Biggio is on Line 2
they should let Holliday fight it out for a spot in Spring Training. If they promote him this year or just hand him SS pre spring training – it could all go to his head. that was what happened to me in Grade 3 dodgeball.
Cleveland won’t spring for Giolito unless he takes a major discount to stay. On an interesting side note; the last starting pitcher the Indians/Guardians signed as a free agent was Shaun Marcum in November 2014…
