With the Giants looking for a new manager and Bob Melvin’s future with the Padres perhaps in question, there has already been speculation that the two situations could be simultaneously resolved by Melvin leaving San Diego to take over the Giants’ dugout. Melvin is both from the Bay Area and is both a former Giants player (1986-88) and A’s manager (2011-21). It was during that stint in Oakland that Melvin worked with Farhan Zaidi, when the Giants’ current president of baseball operations was a member of the Athletics’ front office.
Melvin is under contract for the 2024 season, so the Padres would have to fire the skipper to allow him to change jobs. While there have been plenty of rumblings that Melvin might be replaced, the possibility that he might immediately join a division rival could complicate the situation for the Padres, and they might explore the possibility of some kind of trade if the Giants did have interest in hiring the veteran manager. A meeting of Padres officials is set to take place Monday, so some kind of resolution to Melvin’s status in San Diego could possibly be coming pretty quickly.
More from around the NL West…
- In other Giants news, the club placed Mitch Haniger on the 10-day injured list yesterday (retroactive to September 26) due to a lower back strain. The move will officially end Haniger’s season, a disappointing campaign that saw the outfielder hit .209/.266/.365 over 229 plate appearances. The limited playing time is certainly a factor, as Haniger played in only 61 games due to a right forearm fracture that cost him roughly 2.5 months of the season, as well as an oblique injury in Spring Training that delayed his 2023 debut until April 24. Signed to a three-year, $43.5MM free agent deal last winter, Haniger can only hope for much better health heading into his second year in San Francisco.
- Joe Musgrove hasn’t pitched since July 28 due to a bout of shoulder inflammation, as the Padres opted to shut Musgrove down rather than risk any further injury, as San Diego’s hopes of reaching the playoffs looked dim. Musgrove provided Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune with a health update, saying that his shoulder is feeling good and that he is making “a very easy, slow progression” towards his normal offseason throwing routine. In a pinch, Musgrove said he could have been able to pitch if the Friars had make the playoffs and reached the second round. However, the right-hander will now look to rebound after an injury-riddled 2023, as Musgrove was limited to 98 innings due to his shoulder issue and a broken toe suffered during Spring Training.
- X-rays were negative on Miguel Rojas’ left hand after the Dodgers infielder was hit by a Sean Hjelle pitch on Friday. Rojas was removed from the game as a precaution, and manager Dave Roberts (speaking with Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times and other reporters) feels Rojas will be okay, though he’ll undergo more testing today. The Dodgers’ first-round bye means that they won’t begin their postseason run until October 7, giving Rojas plenty of time to heal up.

Luciano or Harrison for BoMel! >.<

Ha ha. How about Melvin to Giants in exchange for a functional FO/Manager relationship in San Diego ?

I dont think anyones fixing Preller’s issues…
Blue Baron
@Gwynning: Dream on. Nobody needs to trade for him if he gets fired.
Ban Jacob Nix. He knew Lindsey Hill was lying.
Or padres trade him elsewhere. They dont have to fire him. Especially given how ss has done last month of the season.
Blue Baron
Interested teams can just wait and if he’s not fired, pick someone else. The Padres don’t really have leverage here.
Ban Jacob Nix. He knew Lindsey Hill was lying.
If a teams wants him they’ll have to trade for him if he isn’t fired.
If they wanna go with plan b or plan c. That’s fine. Padres didn’t lose anything in this scenario. Teams that hire plan b or plan c missed out on their preferred manager candidate.
websoulsurfer
If other teams want Melvin, Padres have 100% leverage. If Melvin wants to manage elsewhere that is 100% up to the Padres. The Padres don’t have to fire him. They could “promote” him to a “special assistant” position and go get another manager if they wanted to. They could demote him to clubhouse guy and he is still under contract. They could send him to manage the Peoria ACL team and he is still under contract.
Blue Baron
But nobody outside of San Diego cares.
Ban Jacob Nix. He knew Lindsey Hill was lying.
Then why are you commenting on this thread exactly if you don’t care?
Blue Baron
And why are you concerning yourself with me expressing my opinion?
Lets Go DBacks
“They could demote him to clubhouse guy and he is still under contract.”
So his contract with the Padres is a “do with me what you please”-contract?
I would think he has a contract to be the manager of the MLB team, not one to clean the loo.
Ban Jacob Nix. He knew Lindsey Hill was lying.
You posted “But nobody outside of San Diego cares”.
I asked a question about what you posted.
Welcome to commenting threads 101.

Says the genius who posted the amazingly dumb comment about a just-deceased senator and others unrelated to baseball.
And I asked a question about what you posted.
Welcome to practicing what you preach 101.
Ban Jacob Nix. He knew Lindsey Hill was lying.
This comment section isn’t going the way you think it is. Just a heads up man.
Also. Your come back would make sense if I asked who cares what you think. I didn’t so your retort doesn’t make much sense.
Also also. I didn’t post that comment. Might need to get your glasses checked.
Blue Baron
Also also. Might need to get your brain checked. Dolt.
On the other hand, stupidity isn’t a crime, so you’re free to go.

Feinstein for Melvin make it happen Newsom Jimmy Fallon first drafts of rock star gm impressions Kevin bacon pitching coach

Feinstein just died.
But what an amazingly dumb comment even if she hadn’t.
Ban Jacob Nix. He knew Lindsey Hill was lying.
Jimmy Fallon and Kevin Bacon as gm and pitching coach, as well as newsom the governor making it happen was obviously clues that the comment was tongue in cheek.
Blue Baron
But not especially funny and still amazingly dumb.

The goal was to get you to say that. Success.

Preller must be so happy SF wants Melvin. He gets to pick a 4th manager without having to explain to Pappa Pete why he deserves it
stephaniebpetagno
There’s absolutely no evidence to say Melvin is wanted by SF.
unpaidobserver
The timing of Kapler’s firing does suggest that the Giants see the managerial candidate they want and want to act quickly and it’s no secret that Melvin is on the hot seat.
Now, as to the wisdom of this decision, I agree, the Giants could and should do better.
Longtimecoming
Stephanie – this is MLB Trade rumors. Evidence is not required as this is all about rumor and speculation and prophesying.
If you want to wait for evidence read a newspaper.
Blue Baron
Newspaper reporters speculate and traffic in rumors as well.
Longtimecoming
Of course they do but when I read my sports page it tells me what happened yesterday which is what I was going for there. Papers tend to report what happened yesterday as a rule.
Blue Baron
Not as much since newsprint became obsolete. Now there’s immediate and real time reporting in addition to stories about the previous day’s games.
And IMO, a lot of those game stories are just mindless play-by-play recaps full of information that can be found elsewhere.
Longtimecoming
Blue you don’t really think that newsprint doesn’t exist anymore do you?
Even if you do read your paper online – which I do sometimes – it is still the same newspaper telling us what happened yesterday.
Blue Baron
It exists, but in very limited use and it’s all but obsolete, not that different from the typewriter.
One paper in Connecticut I worked for as an editor no longer has its own printing press.
Blue Baron
Plus columns and features written for the website that are published right away instead of as much as 12-24 hours later in print.
I have covered events and written stories for both print media (in the 1990s) and websites in the last 10 years.
Recent gamers and features I submitted have gone live on the sites within 30 minutes.
That quick turnaround is basically why print media is all but obsolete with a few exceptions.

I do like the idea of a trade for BoMel for both teams. Padres don’t have to pay 4 million, Giants would get him on just a 1 year commitment, so if he really isn’t right for today’s game it’s just a year, no flushed money to fire him. And if Melvin is great in SF, I’m sure they could extend him.
Question is what is fair trade value here. Can’t be much, right? An aged AAA pitching prospect and a very young lottery ticket? Or am I under valuing a desired manager?
DonOsbourne
An established guy like Melvin isn’t going to work on a one year contract. He can sit at home and collect his money from the Padres for the next year with no headache.
stymeedone
If his contract is traded, and he doesn’t perform his duties, he wouldn’t get paid.
websoulsurfer
Only if he is fired. If he walks, he gets paid nothing. He already retired by taking a “hands-off approach” to the team this season. May as well make it official. If the Giants want him, send a decent prospect and call it a day.
Lets Go DBacks
I don’t understand the trade.
Farhan Zaidi is basically the next man out in San Francisco and he is willing to have his career as GM there saved or canned by a guy that is considered too “old school” by San Diego?
Doesn’t make any sense to me, but maybe Zaidi is desperate and no longer has faith in his stats department and wishes to rely more on “no guts, no glory”.

Maddon is the wise choice for SFG mgr.
He’ll attract Ohtani.
websoulsurfer
Ohtani with the Angels when Scioscia was the manager. The following year it was Ausmus. Then Maddon. Then Nevin.
mab51357
Maddon is too much of an uppity head case. He’s another Gabe Kapler without the physique. No thanks. And obviously this is just my opinion.
SweetBabyRayKingsThickThighs
If the Giants didn’t fire Kapler they could’ve traded him for Melvin
Giants78
Padres have like 5 star players, Giants have none. Yet, both are hovering around .500 at end of season. Why the H3LL would SF want Bob Melvin??
filihok
G78
Because the manager is only partially responsible for the number of wins a team gets.
And they don’t exist in vacuums. One manager might work well with one F/O and not with another. Players might respond to this manager but not that one
JayRyder
For the Giants – I’m curious about Joe Madden. I don’t think the team is assembled to give Madden an impact team as right now. But he would instantly give credibility to the front office and team. He’d be my first choice on a three year deal. Melvin, I’m 50/50 on him. I don’t know him to be that great, but then again I don’t know much about him.
– Haniger 2 more years at 35.5 mil. And a question mark player at that. Farhan spoke of “looking into things” this off-season. And maybe changing his own ways. The way he runs the Org. In reality alone I’d find it hard to believe this guy is going to do anything different than what he has done the last five seasons. Changing stripes on a zebra isn’t that easy.
Also Farhan’s press conference didn’t give me a lot of confidence in him in general. I have always been on the fence with him. Meaning the so called new way of thinking in baseball. I’m much more Sabean and Bochy. Definitely Sabean going way back. But I gave Farhan a chance and the 107 win season gave him a lot of clout. But yet still I more observe him than completely root for him.
As of now I’d like to see the team become more of a baseball team than a science experiment. I also wonder how the TV ratings are effected with This style of play. I assume the ratings are also factored in by the front office. And it was Larry Baer who pushed this new wave of Baseball ops head. Could his job be on the line as well. ? I always liked Larry. But maybe his ego got out of hand, changing out Sabean and his staff at the time. But then again Sabean handed over to Evans who clearly just spent money and had no idea how to trade for needs in the moment.
Baseball is the hardest sport. Period. But I know the ownership. They will pay to have a great product. The front office always loves to make a great atmosphere at the park. The product needs improvement, and I believe they will make it happen once again. Playoffs for sure. World Series ? Those are always miracle runs. And the three we have, I will forever be thankful for those titles. I love those teams. Each different in their own way and I will always remember.

As a padres fan I really could care less if he goes to the giants. The padres had all the talent in the world and bomel was unable to get them to play like it. He himself said he was taking a more hands off approach this year and it shows.
Bomel also loves to platoon players so he should be a good fit for the giants who have very few guys they want to play everyday.
steven st croix
Stop with the Joe Madden stuff, that guys act is tired. Why would BoMel go to SF? Farhan will be gone after the next season, maybe sooner, and then he will be with a GM that didn’t hire him. SD is the better team, anyways.
1958giants
Farhan stated last year, we need to be faster, we need to be better on defense, neither happened in any way this year, so I say he better pull some magical rabbits out of his hat this off season or time to part ways, As far as Gabe, kneeling for anthems and narcissistic behaviors turned me off, plus never heard players with strong positive attitudes towards the guy, don’t think he was liked much.
websoulsurfer
I am sure that the Padres would be willing to accept a trade for one year of Melvin. When he signed with the Padres, Melvin made it clear that no matter what, 2024 would be his final season as a manager. He quit on the Padres with his “hands-off approach” to managing the team this season. Abdicated his responsibilities to his “Associate” manager and the players. Retired a year early. So take him Giants.
zeuz1
Bob Melvin is too soft/nice as a manager….Padres should bring in a hard-ass old school guy to light a fire under their under-performing squad. I think Ozzie Guillen would be a perfect fit!
foppert1
Just read an mlb.com top 10 list of potentials for the Giants. Donnie Ecker coming in at number 7.
Now there’s a thought…..
websoulsurfer
He was a UCLB Dirtbag. California kid I think. He would be a good choice. He is also an analytics hound like Kapler, so that would not be a big change for Zaidi.

He was also the giants hitting coach in ‘21. Good memories.

What about Matt Williams? He is already in house. Hard nose old school I assume. Like Skip Schumaker… was previously in house. How is he doing now? Miami was it?
TellItGoodbye
I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone. Why on Earth would the Giants, or ANY team want Bob Melvin??? He is a proven loser. He was given a roster of superstars and under-achieved, whereas Kapler was given yearly rosters packed with .220 reclamation projects and had a better record. The idea the Giants would trade anything for him is laughable.
GSWfanklay
Kapler got a raw deal for sure. It’s Zahdi that needs to go. As a Giants fan it’s been frustrating knowing the ballpark keeps free agent hitters away and now Farhan is using only 2 starters and all these bullpen games… now free agent pitchers don’t want to be there either. He got everything right one time 2021. But that was also the old regime shaped that team… Crawford, Belt, and poesy all had huge years
BlueSkies_LA
Meanwhile the Giants pitchers plunked three more Dodgers in today’s game. Intentionally , or just sloppiness? You decide.
