Soooo …. what happened to Simon Hampton?
cpdpoet
Producer @Bloomberg since 6/23 according to LinkdIn, where he also worked from 1/23 to 5/23…..? Weird…
Someone here made mention of it awhile ago and said that he just moved on no bad issues. Must admit I do miss that saturday morning chat….

Maybe they’ll discuss why Anthony Franco has spearheaded the shadow banning of many longtime posters who he disagrees with such as DeGromTexasRanger. Don’t criticize Anthony otherwise you might be the next to be forbidden from posting on this site.

Yeah. Antonia Franco is quite easily-offended.
wagner13
If you don’t like it, then why are you still here?
Sounds like he made a reasonable decision and you just want to complain
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
Reasonable decision how?

Exactly what drug and in what quantity do you have to ingest it to ask if the A’s will make the Playoffs next year? SMH
Gwynning
I think the answers might be many different ones and lots of them, Unc.
Hemlock
If the Oakland A’s were 20 games better at this exact point next season, they would still be 1 1/2 games behind the Angels
Besides, the primary focus of Oakland ownership is moving to Las Vegas not winning baseball games.

Why would anyone think the yankees will be better than the Mets next year?!?? The Mets have an owner willing to spend and a new GM
Samuel
Because the Mets had the highest payroll in MLB history last year and sucked?
Of course, you’re comparing them to the Yankees, that are pretty much in the same boat.
Why is it that NYC baseball fans know so little about the sport that they continue to think the key to winning in MLB is spending money?
It’s been well over a decade now with an overwhelming amount of evidence that shows: “It’s not how much you spend, it’s how you spend it”.
User 3180623956
I’m nowhere close to being a fan of either ny team and understand about spending the right way. My point, which I admittedly did a poor job of making, is that the Mets have a much better chance at being competitive next season based on their roster, an owner who isn’t afraid to spend or make deals and a new GM who should be able to handle spending wisely.
Atloriolesfan
Orioles fan to NY fans:
You are absolutely right. The Yankees and Mets can get back in 2024, but the team that spends the most will have the best bet. It’s a race to sign Ohtani, Stroman, Nola and the Japanese pitchers. Budget a minimum of $150m in additional payroll for 5 years. Don’t let the SOCAL teams outbid you.
Message to other Os fans: A New York bidding war is our dream. Stand by and watch for more McCanns and Hicks falling into our hands. And drafting twice before both New York teams in 2024, 2025 and 2026, even if the Os make the playoffs and the NY teams don’t.
Jean Matrac
I’m not a fan of either team, and I did not vote since I had no strong opinion about which would be better.
That said, I completely understand the thinking that the Yankees might be better. One because the Mets have already suggested that they’re targeting 2025 to go for it. meaning they might be using 2024 to retool a bit. And two, IMO the Yankees have a better crop of young prospects than the Mets, and they should progress next season.
LordD99
History. The Yankees are almost always better than the Mets.

So, the Padres should trade Soto for pitching as that’s the “Hole they need to fill” this year.
OK
Keeping in mind that Scott Boras represents Juan Soto and that his contract expires at the end of the 2024 season, here’s the riddle…..
What major league team:
1) Looks like a contender in 2024;
2) Has pitching to burn knowing that pitchers in today’s MLB have even more injuries than position players;
3) Would welcome dealing with Scott Boras over Mr. Soto’s 2024 salary; and
4) Knows that short of a $500m-plus extension offer Mr. Soto will be a one year rental?
Hint: Identify the 2023-24 off-season’s most desperate owner and PoBO……if you can….and it looks like the Mets, Yankees, and Padres have all learned a lesson about doing things like this.
DonOsbourne
Based on your criteria, I would guess the Texas Rangers. If they miss the playoffs, this will be especially true.
But Seattle, Chicago (Cubs), and maaaybe Boston could also qualify.
sillywabbit
Seattle won’t be trading any of their top 6 starters for a rental.
sillywabbit
Quality of writing is all that matters, not identity.
Atloriolesfan
Blue Jays. 2024 may be the last hurrah. Rent Soto and retool completely if you fail. Their pitching prospects are useless unless they add to Bichette and Vladdy and the current staff can’t get them anywhere close.
Samuel
Ahhh,
One last “Going All In Before Teardown and Rebuild”…
My 3 top candidates are the Giants, Jays and Mariners as a long-shot.
The theory is the same as the Padres possibly dumping Soto – a team trading for him in the offseason can still trade him for a prospect or two at the deadline if they’re out of the race.
–
The Giants keep showing up a buck short each year. Getting a big time bat might get them over the top in the NL West, which has quickly become a semi star-strutted. overpublicized poor division.
–
The Jays have a new 2B and a new 3B coming to build around Bichette…and maybe Vlad (something may well be wrong there). Add that Mark Shapiro is one of those corporate-type guys that lets others take the fall (Atkins) while he goes on, The Jays have been doing the “Big money team with poor farm system thing” constantly taking on salaries in FA and trades to “Get over the top” for years. Today they have a few good young players, primarily veterans at various stages of past their prime, and a payroll out of sync with the teams performance. There is next to no way they can compete with the O’s and Rays over the next few years as their veterans continue to deteriorate while those teams young vets get better. So this could be their one last desperate chance, desperate “Get over the top” shot before the teardown – which if they try to do it this offseason their fans will scream: “Why!?!” The issue is that all the Jays have to offer in pitching is overpaid veterans….is that OK with the Padres for a one-year run, or will they want pitchers back that can be there for a few years?
–
As for the Mariners – if ownership opens up their budget I believe they’re the top destination for Ohtani. Ichiro is still associated with the team, is a friend/mentor with Ohtani, and has very probably been recruiting him for a bit now. If that happens they have an Soto-type bat with more power, and can use their current pitchers in 2024 until Ohtani can pitch again in 2025.

A writer on MLBTR who actually understands how to use a comma inside a quotation… how impressive! Maybe, MLBTR will hire their first female writer now??

Obviously, but for a site that’s basically caving to internet feminists on relationship dispute issue and censoring any rational comments, they should be more pro-feminist. They should live up to their symbolic censorship and hire actual women. They can’t be much worse than the “men” working for this site.
DarkSide830
Respecting a successful women doesn’t make you a femanist.
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
Yes. Kennedi Landry is quite an improvement ovee the prior guy covering the Rangers. However, successful doesn’t usually mean competent with all the hiring requirements (see the Marlins)…
Sky14
Cole is way ahead in WAR over Gray, Gausman and Eflin. Must be looking at fWAR, is a poor metric for grading a pitcher for awards.
Angels & NL West
I vote Snell for NL Cy Young over Gallen. As much as I love Gallen, three of his last four starts have been stinkers at a time when the Dbacks need him to come up big.

hyraxwithaflamethrower
Hilariously bad take on Ohtani “ditching” his team. You mean the probably unanimous MVP who continued to DH even after an injury ended his pitching for the year? The guy who’s been a consummate professional even on a losing, clueless team? The guy who’d still be playing even in yet another lost season if another injury hadn’t sidelined him? That guy ditched his team?
Atloriolesfan
Correct. Except Ohtani will not be unanimous. Seager, Semien and Henderson will all pass him in position player WAR. I think his incremental pitching value means he deserves it, but a guy with a perpetual losing team (not just a non playoff team) is the BEST player, but not necessarily the most VALUABLE player.
Samuel
You don’t think Ohtani was the most valuable player for his team compared to Seager, Semien, Henderson, and others?
On the other the other hand, if he wasn’t there the Angels wouldn’t have made so many screwy signings and trades for over the hill veterans doing the never-ending “Get over the top” thing, and would today have a very nice core of young players to grow a team around.
LordD99
It will be unanimous unless some local beat reporters vote for their guy. The unicorn has 10 rWAR. No one is coming close.
