Anthony Rendon has not played since July 4. The Angels third baseman fouled a ball off his left leg and was diagnosed with a shin contusion. 10 days later, the Halos finally placed him on the injured list. A month thereafter, he was transferred to the 60-day IL.
While neither Rendon nor the team had been particularly forthcoming with updates, the 11-year veteran met with reporters this afternoon. Rendon told the Halos beat he’d been diagnosed with a fractured tibia last month (relayed by Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register). Questioned why the Angels had continued to refer to his injury as a bone bruise, he told reporters to ask team personnel.
The Angels have not released a statement on Rendon’s comments, nor have they confirmed the fracture. However, manager Phil Nevin indicated the rehab process for a shin contusion and a fracture were not different — suggesting the difference in diagnosis is immaterial. A source close to the team tells Alden González of ESPN that Rendon had initially met with four doctors, two apiece chosen by the team and by the player’s camp. After those four evaluations diagnosed a bone bruise, a fifth doctor (chosen by Rendon) called the injury a fracture.
It’s the continuation of a bizarre sequence of events, although both Rendon and agent Scott Boras told reporters there’s no ill will towards the organization. “The treatment plan the Angels were giving and what he was to do was synonymous with what the doctors had recommended,” Boras said.
There’s still not a ton of clarity on Rendon’s overall prognosis. He’s eligible to return from the IL at any point and left open the possibility of coming back this season, although that’d seem a long shot with only two weeks remaining. If he doesn’t make it back, his year will conclude with a .236/.361/.318 showing with two homers across 183 plate appearances.
Rendon has hit just 857 times in four seasons since signing a seven-year, $245MM free agent deal. He got into 52 of 60 games during the shortened 2020 campaign but has appeared in only 148 contests over the three subsequent seasons. If he doesn’t return this year, he’ll have gotten into slightly more than 30% of the Angels’ games from 2021-23.
There are three years remaining on that deal, which was backloaded. Rendon is due $38MM annually through 2026. The Angels have used Eduardo Escobar and Mike Moustakas — both of whom are impending free agents — as their third base tandem in the second half.
Rendon the Clown.
Forgot about Rendon cause he’s only high priced.
Rendon making the Stanton contract look like money went spent.
I have a feeling Carlos Rodon is about to enter that conversation in another year or two. He didn’t even wait for the ink to dry.
Not off to a good start is it?
Under the definition of jerk there’s a mugshot of Rendon. What a loser.
He could’ve done this weeks ago instead of being a jerk to the same reporters he spoke to today.
It’s not his job to tell reporters he has a broken tibia.
Four doctors said bruise, his said broken tibia.
You should be wondering why two team doctors got it wrong?
Because it isn’t broken
Nobody likes Rendon.
It’s not his job but perception is reality. You’d think he would see it’s in his best interest to not further alienate the fan base.
How could he further the conversation? The team doctors said it was just a bruise, but my doctor said it was broken.
How do you think that would have played? Probably worse. Like now for example.
The press can make or break you and they don’t like him and he doesn’t like them.
So, in other words, he kept looking for a doctor, until one agreed with him.
The press had nothing to do with him seeking someone to validate his own opinion.
And why 2 of his own doctors did too? Enough with the Rendon apologists. In the ESPN article, when specifically asked about playing NEXT season, he was non-committal. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but this is really unbelievable. When asked why he didn’t speak out sooner to change public/fan perception, he said “I don’t care. They don’t know the facts.” We don’t know because he didn’t/wouldn’t say anything! Think it will be virtually impossible to get the fans back on his side unfortunately.
Enough of the Rendon apologists? Really? What is it, 50 to 1. You are so fragile you can’t take 50 to 1?
I think you people have been brainwashed by the 50 to 1 negative stories by an industry that doesn’t like him. But i don’t write I’ve had enough.
4 doctors said it’s a bruise. 1 doctor (hired by Rendon) says it’s a fracture. 80% it’s a bruise.
It’s like in obvious murder cases, the defense will always find a quack who says the victim commited suicide. Rendon shopped around until he found a guy who gave him the diagnosis he wanted to hear. His 40mil that go down the drain every season are the reasons the Angels play with a AAA roster + reclamation projects.
And you wonder why he didn’t say anything? He’s in the clubhouse, why I don’t know, and you wonder why he didn’t they’ll him his condition..
Because people on this board think they have a better idea of his condition than him. And people call me arrogant.
Why is it you are the only one who really knows what his condition is?
Your opinion is just that, an opinion.
Yet you were the only one arguing with anyone who disagrees with you?
Maybe it is time you admit to yourself that your head is buried in the sand.
He got Dr Jerry from the Golden Girls who simply stuck a tongue depressor in Rendon’s mouth, told him to say “Ah.”, and concluded his leg is broken.
I guess he needs 5 more doctors opinions
Well you don’t know what his condition is, all you do is spread your no nothing guess.
Perhaps and if he does what business is it if yours? You are not paying his salary are you?
Not of this actually matters. Regardless of who’s right or wrong, it’s just yet another stain on this trainwreck of a franchise. The Angels have officially taken the mantle of worst-run franchise. And before anyone debates that, let me ask a question: How many franchises have killed their own players?
Well Nats you could have signed him over Strausburg so it could have been worse.
I think signing Corbin is worse. At least with Stras and Rendon on the IL they still have a chance of winning.
That Nats team was an injury waiting to happen.
I don’t understand why articles are written about Rendon’s injuries because that is not news. Now, if Rendon played in at least 10 games in a row, that would be news and would definitely warrant an article.
I love the meme “I want a man who doesn’t play games” with a picture of Rendon.
This guy is playing games with the team and league.
He got his contract and he will put out ZERO .
PLEASE retire Anthony. Please. No need to contemplate it any longer. Take the leap.
$38 million annually thru 2026! I take back everything I ever said about the Royals. They have it figured out. Free agency is a viper pit. You’re going to get bit.
The Angels should have fired the entire front office who allowed this to happen, then hired another front office and fired them too. Just to make point.
That’s funny, but Boston seems to be doing that to front offices lately.
Angels owner Arte Moreno is the one who wanted him. Should he fire himself?
He tried but didn’t follow through.
hahahaaa, thats good 🙂
Jets fans have got nothing on Angel fans.
At least it was a reporter who asked him and not a fan.
If at first you don’t get a fractured tibia diagnosis try, try, try, try, try again. Does anyone else wonder if Rendon saw another doctor or two, that we don’t know about, before he found one that said he had a fracture? It’s a crazy thought, guess I’m just done with Rendon’s shenanigans.
The diagnosis might be different, but the time spent on IL will be same. Rendon is not trying to avoid playing (badly), nor does it affect his pay. There is no additional benefit.
The diagnosis could be that the fifth doctor spotted something in new imaging that others could have missed.
I think it’s certainly reasonable to question if a guy who has openly said that baseball is boring is now trying to avoid playing it.
If four orthopedists and radiologists didn’t see a fracture, especially considering team doctors are usually some of the best in their fields, then there likely is not a fracture. My only thought is someone ordered a bone scan as opposed to the normal cat scan or MRI and found something very small, which essentially would be treated like a bad bone bruise. ( I am a doctor). Doctors are human too and sometimes stretch a diagnosis especially when someone famous is looking for one. None of us really know without seeing what his scans look like and likely never will.
Overpaid Diva.
At least he’s open about his “I don’t care” attitude toward fans. So many are not, per a San Francisco sports media personality…
Wow, just when you thought things couldnt get worse. There seems to be no bottom for this organization.
Time to change my username.
Jacoby Redon.
These long term deals rarely work out, but teams keep giving them out. The Padres are going to find that out when the Machado and Bogaerts deals blow up in their face.
I agree
It does seem more bad than good on the long term deals.
I hoped the Angels would package Rendon and Ohtani in a trade for a minor league place holder. Maybe they did.
Rendon has made Gary Gaetti look like a hall of famer.
Ohtani cleaned out his locker. I am surprised there’s no news on this?

Arte knew Rendon was glass
Yeah when healthy, he can carry a team and did so for a few years in Washington
However, now he is useless
857 hits across four seasons is actually REALLY GOOD.
Pretty sure it meant at bats unless that’s sarcasm
My name is Lloyd Christmas of course this is sarcasm
Venn diagram: people who think Rendon should quit his job because he thinks it’s boring and people who think their job is boring but keep collecting that paycheck.
Note: he didn’t say playing was boring. He said watching was boring. Something a lot of baseball fans and baseball people agreed with. Hence, changes
Lots of players don’t watch baseball after they retire.
The press doesn’t like Rendon, Rendon doesn’t like the press, the fans read the press and don’t like Rendon. Color me shocked that fans think exactly what the press wants them to think.
Other than the Angels are a better team with Rendon in the lineup, I’m neutral on Rendon. He could be a jerk, but I certainly am not going to think he’s a jerk because the press tells me he’s a jerk.
Im a little wiser than that.
H11F
No one IS a jerk. Everyone can BE a jerk.
Other than that, largely agreed.
I don’t understand why baseball fans are so quick to hate baseball players. I mean, I get that there is an organized machine designed to make fans prefer the Team to players, but I don’t understand why it works so well
The fans did not force Rendon to sign his contract.
The press did not force Rendon to sign his contract.
There is a clause in every players contract that they are required to meet in front of the media. The players are well aware of that before they sign that contract.
hg
Those are true statements
I do not understand why you think they are relevant statements
The press did not force the Angels to sign the contract with Rendon
The fans did not force the Angels to sign the contract with Rendon
Rendon did not force the Angels to sign the contract with Rendon
Also true statements that seem as relevant as your statements

You liked your comment so much you had to repeat it? Just poking fun at you.
And my statement is just as relevant and irrelevant as anyone else’s.
It is just me participating in the conversation
“And my statement is just as relevant and irrelevant as anyone else’s”
This is very much not true. And it’s worrisome that you think so.
If I made a comment about my favorite food in this thread, that wouldn’t be relevant. Similarly, that no one was forced to sign a contract isn’t relevant in a discussion on a player’s injury or whether that player likes to watch baseball or if they like the press or not.
Your argument is contradicting itself
The article mentions nothing about the press yet somehow in this thread it appears
You seem to have missed my point . My point was he signed a contract with a clause that states he is required to interact with the media
HG
How is that contradicting?
Is interactions with the press aren’t relevant to this article. Neither is the fact that no one was forced to sign the contract. Neither is his favorite food or the movies he hasn’t seen.
Thank you for proving my point
I love how you feel it is “worrisome” that I reply within this thread. Many many people have irrelevant thoughts within this same thread yet you choose to pick on me?
Explain why it is you think my reply is any less “ worrisome” than Rendon being a clown, than Lyle Alzadois brought up with this?
Why are you worried about me? It seems you want try a pick apart my thoughts. How about you be a responsible human and stop yourself
Filhok/H11
Odd how you both seem to be the only ones agreeing with one another.
Arguments seem to be the same as well
Hmmmmmmmmmm
Is he wearing a walking boot or a cast?
Is he using crutches? A cane? Or is he just walking around normal? That would all say a lot!
L9y
What do you think it would say?
Related: what is your medical background?
I had no idea I had a bone chip the size of a quarter on my throwing elbow. It caused me issues for a year before I saw a doctor. He took an e-rays of and told me why my elbow hurt and told me it was too late to do anything about it.
I have no idea why he’s not in a cast. Maybe two months ago he should have been.
This guy is softer than Charmin. The Lion from Wizard of Oz has more heart.
SBSD
Almost certain that the professional athlete is tougher than the Internet commenter
Rendon often seemed slow to recover from injuries when he was a Nat. But some injuries are worse than originally diagnosed, too, and fractures can be initially tough to spot through swelling.
I’m sorry to see his career fading away in such an injury-riddled fashion.
Maybe the Angels were annoyed Rendon refuses to speak with the media, so they basically forced him to do so here.
Too bad the right diagnosis wasn’t made in the beginning. That might have helped the healing accelerate. The Angels trainers and medical teams seem sub par to me based on the past history of the health of the Angel players, including Shohei.
