Prior to tonight’s game against the Dodgers, the Giants announced that they had placed left-hander Scott Alexander on the 15-day injured list with a strained left hamstring, with MLB.com noting that the veteran reliever will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 season, not just the minimum 15 days that would allow Alexander to return in time for the NLDS should the Giants manage to sneak into a postseason spot. Replacing Alexander on the club’s active roster is outfielder Heliot Ramos, who has slashed .208/.269/.354 in 20 games with the Giants this year.
After posting a dominant 1.04 ERA in 17 1/3 innings of work during his first season in San Francisco last year, the 33-year-old lefty returned to less impressive results, with a 4.66 ERA in 48 1/3 innings this year. That being said, his 3.26 FIP is more than a full run lower than his ERA, indicating that there may be some bad luck baked into his below average (92 ERA+) run prevention numbers. Overall, Alexander sports a 3.70 ERA and 3.16 FIP in 72 career appearances with the Giants. A free agent at the end of the season, Alexander figures to be one of the more reliable left-handed relief options on the open market this offseason.
Alexander isn’t the only Giants arm dealing with injury woes of late, however, as right-hander Jakob Junis exited tonight’s game due to what the club has described as neck tightness, per MLB.com’s Maria I. Guardado. After an uneven first season in San Francisco last year during which he posted a 4.42 ERA with a 3.65 FIP over 112 innings of work, Junis has settled into a versatile relief role where he mixes between long relief and single-inning appearances. In this role, he’s posted a 3.93 ERA across 84 2/3 innings with a strong 26.2% strikeout rate against a walk rate of just 5.8%. Like Alexander, Junis figures to hit the open market this offseason, and could receive interest as both a starter and a reliever.
As discussed by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, injury situations aren’t the only issues plaguing the Giants this late in the season. Catcher Patrick Bailey, who has caught more games this season than ever before in his career, told Slusser that at this point in the season that he is “experiencing more fatigue than [he’s] ever felt before,” a situation that’s surely factoring into the 24-year-old rookie’s downturn in performance in recent weeks. Dating back to the middle of August, Bailey has slashed a meager .174/.245/.244 with a 34% strikeout rate in his last 94 trips to the plate. Slusser adds that Bailey’s typically strong defense has also taken a hit recently, as he’s committed three errors and allowed four passed balls in the month of September.
Looking ahead to 2024, the backup catcher position figures to be something of a question mark for the Giants, with Bailey having caught 82% of the club’s games since being called up back in May. Former top prospect Joey Bart and Rule 5 draft pick Blake Sabol both figure to be internal options available to San Francisco, though it would hardly be a surprise to see the club pursue a more established back-up option like Victor Caratini or Tom Murphy in free agency to help ease Bailey into the workload of a wire-to-wire big league season.

The Giants have payroll space to go after some free agents to upgrade their roster. They are my wildcard team in the Ohtani sweepstakes. They have no real long term commitments or major money tied up and can build a team around Shohei. They get a few more position players to improve their team and they could easily be a contender in the West. I know the Dodgers always have the inside track on Asian players, but San Francisco also has similar location variables for those players as well.
The hitters and position players in free agency are not as noteworthy as years past, but signing a few upgrades/depth pieces and making a trade for a bad contract could really make the team better this off-season. Signing Caratini could also help the pitching staff as well. I’m not a Giants fan, but their organization does a good job of roster construction and getting good value for their longer term deals.
amk1920
They gave three players an opt out after this season and not a single one will take it. And that doesn’t even include the awful Haniger contract. Farhan’s roster construction has been abysmal. You aren’t winning championships with LaMonte Wade being your signature acquisition

The SFGiants are a Mess
Zaidi’s entering year 6 next year and they’ve only posted 1 season with a winning record above .500
And they are on track to finish this year with another losing record.
Gogiantspadressuck
Why don’t you talk when the Yankees win a World Series in the last decade…
tedtheodorelogan
Everything he said is just plain fact.
Gogiantspadressuck
Never said it wasn’t but all that guy does is come on here and troll the Giants 24/7 he should be more concerned about the fact the yankmees haven’t won since 09. Giants have won 3 times since then we are doing just fine
TheBull
SF Giants are Awful. Not sure I’ve seen a more boring lifeless brand of baseball.
And FA’s don’t want to play there. Not just the losing baseball. The city has ramped crime. I mean they have a human feces on the street problem. What the heck? what’s up with people dropping 2’s on the sidewalk??
Bart Harley Jarvis
@TheBull
Whoa, pump the hate brakes, Fox’n Friends! You need to take a break from NewsMax and OANN. And I’m sure there’s someone taking an outdoor poop in your little slice of heaven as we speak.
tedtheodorelogan
You don’t have to watch right wing news to realize he is correct. You just need to go for a walk on Market Street.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Or on Any Street USA? My wife and I walked twenty minutes from a restaurant to a concert in the Mission on Thursday evening, and we’re proud to say we arrived turd-free.
Jean Matrac
TheBull,
Please define “ramped crime”. Is that some sort of vandalism of accessible entries? Or maybe you mean rampant. SF ranks 16th in crime rate behind:
St. Louis, MO
Detroit, MI
Baltimore, MD
Memphis, TN
Little Rock, AR
Milwaukee, WI
Cleveland, OH
Albuquerque, NM
Kansas City, MO
Stockton, CA
Chicago, IL
Oakland, CA
New Orleans, LA
Philadelphia, PA
Indianapolis, IN
And just in front of:
NY, NY
Seattle, WA
Las Vegas, NV
Tucson, AZ

Maybe start watching real news instead that Faux News.

TheBull — I know everyone is on the “San Francisco is a trash heap city” narrative, but it’s no more that than almost every major city in the country. There’s work to be done in SF, no doubt (especially with drug enforcement), but the city is still one of the best in the USA. Visit and see for yourself.
As for a “boring team,” I can’t dispute that. This will be the off season that makes or breaks Farhan.

Giants in the NLDS? comedy
foppert1
Have you read your posts ?
The stereotypical, “I’m a know it all” opposition fan type stuff. Not too bad a competition on the comedy front.
amk1920
Yes, I read it. Have you looked at the standings? Giants are 4 games out of a wild card with 7 left to play. They will not be playing in the wild card round or the NLDS. Sorry to break it to you
foppert1
Im well aware. I’m at peace with it. It was a tough ride at times but that’s what I signed up for. Besides, I get to laugh at know it alls like you gleefully putting the boot in. It’s not all bad.
Good luck in the playoffs. Your team has it together.
TheBull
Seriously. There is actual website that tracks human defecation on the streets of san Francisco.

Los Angeles isn’t any better believe that. Watched a he/her defecate on a wall as I was on my way out of that awful state.
BabeRuthAteLiveBabies
Why were you watching? What kept your gaze so long that you saw it and kept looking?
Wanted to see how it ended?
Bart Harley Jarvis
@TheBull,
You need a new hobby.
Balk
What’s even more comical is not a single person on here had anything to say when the Giants were well above .500. They hit a major injury bug and skid and the trolls come out. Get out of here. Every one knows they need a splash signing or two. Needed it since Stanton’s trade. SMH
agnes gooch
Don’t let these doomer trolls get to you Balk, they find happiness by putting others down. Better days ahead for the Giants, stay strong.
27champyankees
Injury bug?? Nobody had more injuries to impact players more than the Yankees and the Dodgers. It’s not even comparable. Yankees never recovered
The Dodgers lost May, Gonsolin, Urias and are still on track to win 97-98 games
GTFO w/ Giants injuries. The truth is they don’t have any talented players because Zaidi is inept
gfan
Enjoy your own inept long term contracts while troll bashing Zaidi. Your last place Yanks are handcuffed for decades.
How about you crawl back under your bridge while you wait that out.
Balk
GTFO w/Giants injuries? Haha! You’re comedy bud. Your statement actually tells more about how bad your own club’s management is not the other way around. We never had ANY star players and still sat better than your high payroll yanks!
Manfred’s playing with the balls
The Giants collapsing looks similar to the early 23 season cards
Datashark
It may seem like a collapse but the players they have can only get you so far they were built with spare parts — its a team that is stuck in transition
skullbreathe
So the Giants 15-day LHP Alexander and bring up an OF hitting .208 and not one of the best relievers in the PCL in LHP Miller?
Simm
Let’s be real Bailey wasn’t a good hitter in the minors and likely won’t be very good in the majors. Fatigue I’m sure doesn’t help.
Datashark
Bailey is an elite defensive player — like an old school catcher – expect .220-.250 type averages with 10-20 hr power
Logistics Guy
I may be wrong but I think when all Is said and done Ohtani will sign with a team that may surprise a lot of people. Just a thought.
dubtastic
It’s very possible
frugalfarhan
Well when you have “openers” starting 3 out of 5 games all year you are going to see some burned out arms and fatigue. If I were an agent I wouldn’t let my players sign here unless it was their last option. After 5 years of nerd ball this team is no closer to winning anything than when FZ started. I have been saying this for years BTW and am glad others are starting to wake up and figure out that this brand of baseball is worse than any form of waste you will find on the streets of SF!
foppert1
What others ?
All I see is the usual child like mentalities doing their child like thing when they are disappointed. Business as usual in Giants territory.
Datashark
FZ MO is going to a pick and pull find broken down players that had promise — sure he has found some return but not worthy of WS bound team — once they show their promise they find other teams to play for
Datashark
5 years of FZ
sure they won 107 which was quite a feat.
The direction Giants are going looks more like the late 70s giants than 2010’s version. Am not sure FZ has really produced enough for those 5 years (take away 107 – what is there? its a .500 team at best)
They have no core that one could say they are truly building on – outside Webb there a lot of questionable ceiling of talent.
Luciano, Harrison, Matos, Bailey, Webb, Doval, Sabol is what they may be building on — they really need something more if they want to reach WS — They are not an Ohtani away they need more than 1 elite level player.
williemaysfield
Conforto and Manaea will opt out. The free agent field is barren of hitters and Conforto is a Boras client. He’ll get better than a 1 year 18m deal. Manaea had a rough April/early May, but has had a very good season since. He’ll beat a 1 year 12.5m contract in free agency. Yaz, wade, Estrada, and even Davis have been good acquisitions for basically nothing. Foundation players? No but solid players.
Pete'sView
williemaysfield — As a Giants fan I hope Conforto and especially Manaea DO opt out.
williemaysfield
Comforto 103 ops+ for 18m one season is not a terrible deal. Same with Manaea’s 1, year 12.5m deal. With all the injuries team depth is huge. There only one year deals at this point. If they use the 18m to sign Ohtani then that fine. Same with using Manaeas money towards a Blake Snell type pitcher.

Look for Junis to return to Kansas City

you don’t have to tell us twice, we get it but I would think Junis goes to whoever pays the most $$$

Might be the Giants.
DanUgglasRing
Many of the discounted injury FAs of the Farhan era have done the very thing thing that made them discounts in the first place by getting injured. Not exactly shocking. I just think maybe they should see the writing on the wall and fork over big money to keep FA starting pitchers for 4-5 years and draft as many decent hitters as possible. If your FA starters can’t carry the team then flip one or two at the deadline and repeat. Maybe in a three year span something will work out but this patchwork pitching staff and a lineup full of guys that play three positions badly whilst slashing 230/310/405 isn’t going to do it.
Pete'sView
It’s mostly a roster of good, complimentary players. They need two everyday hitters and at least one very solid #2 starting pitcher. The quantity over quality roster doesn’t cut it. And if Farhan doesn’t have the cajones to take some leaps of faith, he’ll be gone after next season.
