The Red Sox are facing an uncertain offseason, with the first order of business surely being replacing chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom, who the club fired earlier this month. Once a new head of baseball operations is in place, however, it seems extension negotiations could be on their offseason list of tasks.
Alex Speier of the Boston Globe indicates that it is “likely” that the organization will open talks with young hurler Brayan Bello regarding a potential long-term deal this offseason. Speier also relays right-hander Nick Pivetta’s thoughts on a possible long-term deal with Boston, with the 30-year-old speaking positively of the organization and saying, “You don’t leave any doors closed. Leave them all open and see where it goes.”
That Pivetta, who posted a brutal 6.30 ERA across the first six weeks of the season before being demoted to the bullpen, has finished his 2023 campaign as a potential extension candidate speaks volumes regarding his performance in recent months. Since his initial demotion to the bullpen, Pivetta has posted strong numbers over the course of 102 2/3 innings in a swing role that’s seen him make eight starts and 22 relief appearances. In that time, Pivetta posted a 3.16 ERA and 3.27 FIP with a massive 34.9% strikeout rate against a solid 7.7% walk rate. That’s good for a 27.2 K-BB% that’s outclassed only by Braves fireballer Spencer Strider among pitchers with at least 100 innings of work since May 21, the date of Pivetta’s first relief appearance.
Pivetta’s also managed to keep the excellent results up during the season’s final month, which saw him return to the club’s rotation on a regular basis. During the month of September, Pivetta has posted a 2.43 ERA with a 2.86 FIP and a 34.1% strikeout rate and a microscopic 4.0% walk rate. Pivetta’s fantastic finish to the 2023 campaign leaves him with overall numbers that give him the look of a solid mid-rotation starter. Among the 73 pitchers who have posted at least 140 innings of work this season, Pivetta’s 3.96 FIP ranks 32nd, his 4.04 ERA ranks 38th, and his 31.2% strikeout rate is bested only by Strider and Blake Snell.
Of course, with Pivetta already slated to hit free agency following the 2024 season, a potential extension would likely come at some sort of discount relative to full market value, though perhaps not a particularly steep one given the limited team control remaining. Last offseason’s free agent market saw mid-rotation arms like Jameson Taillon (4 years, $68MM) and Taijuan Walker (4 years, $72MM) both receive in the range of $70MM while sporting similar numbers to those Pivetta has posted the last two seasons, though both Taillon and Walker were younger than Pivetta will, who is set to hit free agency prior to his age-32 campaign.
As for Bello, the young right-hander posted solid numbers in his sophomore campaign, with a 4.24 ERA and 4.53 FIP across 157 innings of work. Those numbers are inflated by a brutal September that’s seen Bello allow 22 runs over 26 innings of work, resulting in a 7.62 ERA. Even so, Bello’s looked more like a fourth or fifth starter to this point in his career than anything else, with roughly league average results and peripherals. His most eye-catching stat is an impressive 56.2% ground ball rate, a figure topped by only Alex Cobb and Logan Webb among pitchers with at least 150 innings this year.
Between the mixed results to this point in his big league career, his youth, and his pre-arbitration status, recent comparisons are few and far between when considering what a Bello extension might look like. Freddy Peralta’s five-year, $15.5MM extension is perhaps the nearest comparison, though Bello’s been better than Peralta was in the first two seasons of his career. Peralta had yet to reach 100 innings pitched in a season and had a career ERA+ nearly 15% lower than Bello’s at the time of his extension.
FenwayFanatic
Lock Bello up for 8+ years. Lock Pivetta up for 2 maybe 3.
Fever Pitch Guy
Fenway – I know it wasn’t mentioned in Nick’s article, but it’s not just September that Bello has sucked.
In July he had a 5.48 ERA, a .912 OPS Against, and just a 5.9 K/9.
And in April it was a 6.57 ERA, .974 OPS Against, and 1.865 WHIP.
No matter how you slice it, whether you look at his first 14 starts and last 14 starts, or his April/July/September and May/June/August, he sucked for half the year. So unless he’s willing to sign a bargain contract, I think they need to wait and see how he responds to a (hopefully) new coaching staff next year.
GASoxFan
Here’s the way I look at it though Fever – if you were to lock in Bello on a deal closer to Peralta, heck, make it a 6 year $20m pact with a pair of options you could get creative with, maybe 2 years of team options that can vest at a slightly higher salary based on some performance milestone TBD, even if bello took a downturn he’d have residual value and how different is it really to the money pi$$ed away on the likes of say Kluber types?
Gamble? Sure. But of a low risk high reward variety. I’m not saying to endorse throwing money at the wall and see what sticks, that’s one reason bloom is gone, but, Bello seems to be learning from Pedro, and, between the youth and the potential if you could lock in 6 years or so in the 20-24m range plus a pair of extra options behind that, I think you go for it.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – I fully endorse your 6 year $20M with options proposal, but I don’t think Bello would agree to having his first three free agent eligible years bought out at such a low AAV.
Top prospects negotiate with the belief they will be a #1 or #2 starter for more than a decade, as they should. It’s up to management to determine at what price the potential reward is greater than the potential risk.
My philosophy is you’ve got him locked up for 5 more years, wait 1-2 more years and if he proves himself during that period of time then offer him a bigger contract that covers 4-5 years of free agent eligibility.
DBH1969
There is a Red Flag on the play. Bello is quoted as saying if there are talks it will be between the organization and his agent.
Translation, “No hometown discount and I am smart enough to wait a couple years to get real money”
The kid has great stuff, has Pedro Martinez as a personal trainer in the DR during the off season, and will make bank in arbitration. He will NOT be cheap
Fever Pitch Guy
DBH – I think Bello is doing what any smart player would do, pass off the distraction of contract questions to the guy who gets paid very well to handle contracts. I wouldn’t read too much into it.
I love Pedro, but he’s no Yoda when it comes to young pitchers. A few years ago he took another young Dominican pitcher with great stuff under his wing. That pitcher was just 24 years old when he signed a 4-year $40M + club option contract that bought out 2 years of free agent eligibility. And he had accomplished much more than Bello had at that point in time, making the All-Star Team twice and coming in 3rd and 9th in Cy Young voting.
Guess how that worked out?
bleacherreport.com/articles/2786582-luis-severino-…
DBH1969
@FPG. You are proving my point. Pedro, and to an extent, Ortiz mentored this guy in one off season after 20126 and he completely dominated until getting hurt. Are you putting the blame of the injury on Pedro? That is nuts, bro.
Fever Pitch Guy
DBH – LOL … I’m not blaming injuries on anybody, I’m just saying stuff happens OFTEN when it comes to young pitchers so do you really want to give a guaranteed big money longterm contract when he’s already locked up for 5 more years?
Having Pedro as a mentor doesn’t guarantee health, and as the article stated Pedro tutors a lot of young Dominican players that we don’t hear about because they simply didn’t have the talent or the results.
BTW – Severino was healthy enough to pitch from mid-May through mid-September, yet still put up a 6.65 ERA. All I’m saying is Pedro’s great but he’s not a miracle worker. I just don’t want to continue the trend of getting locked into bad longterm contracts (Sale, Whitlock, Story, etc) when it’s unnecessary and when the player hasn’t proven to be an exceptional talent yet. Let’s see better results next year and then go from there.
DBH1969
@FPG. AGreed, dude. I think I may have misunderstood your point, when we were actually agreeing. I do think Bello will want real money. If so, wait until 2027
Fever Pitch Guy
DBH – No worries my friend. I think I thought you were trying to justify giving Bello a big contract now, when you were just trying to say he will be asking for a big contract.
miltpappas
Eight for Bello? No way. Maybe 4-5. He’s still a bit of a mystery. Way too inconsistent. Pivetta 2-3 sounds right.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
See Chaim Bloom did do some good things
FenwayFanatic
Bello was already here
Fever Pitch Guy
Lefty – I have often said the Pivetta trade was the best thing Bloom did. I’ve been a big believer in him ever since Day One, and I think he’s just one of those late bloomers (no pun intended). Anybody who can pitch successfully in Boston, with their poor defense and coaching staff, must have quite a bit of talent.
FenwayFanatic
Totally agree
Redsoxx_62
I hope we extend both of them. Get Bello for cheaper before he really cements himself in the majors, and keep Pivetta around for a few more seasons as the fifth starter. In the late parts of this season Pivetta has been excellent, and Cora has finally let him pitch into the 6th/7th and he’s been great. He’s also got that fire that you love to see from a competitor, which this team could use a lot of
DarkSide830
Nick Pivetta lol
Claydagoat
Very astute comment.
miltpappas
He’s probably their 3rd or 4th best pitcher right now.
DBH1969
@Milt. Ya but that is kinda like saying Jamaica has the 3rd or 4th strongest military in the Caribbean.
Claydagoat
Pivetta’s WHIP is 1.12 and he is 14th in the AL in strikeouts. I could care less if they extend him but acting like he didn’t have a decent year is kind of ridiculous.
User 4245925809
Agreed with Bello, should be 1st home developed front end starter in awhile. Pivetta is no Taijuan Walker. long term deal, even giving him 15m aav for.. Say 3y bad gamble. He’s still not close to consistent starter and much better long reliever, like a more expensive version of Kutter Crawford if anything.
Redsoxx_62
I honestly think it would be fine to give him a three year deal at 12-15M per year. Even if he goes back to pitching at like a 4.5 era, he can still give 30 starts a season, and that’s something this team definitely needs. Plus look at a team like the Os with Gibson and his 4.8 era, he’s been very valuable for them because he just eats innings.
LordD99
Alternate headline: Both open to guaranteed money.
30 Parks
No need with Bello at this time & I’d consider a Pivetta extension as a reliever.
okbud
Aren’t they all open to extensions?
On a serious note, I think they should look at something for Bello. He’s shown enough to merit something. Not sure Pivetta has shown enough to warrant anything beyond a spot on next years roster though. Guy has made a career in Boston of having great stretches followed by awful ones. His greatest asset is that he has been healthy his entire time here, though that’s something that can be true of many other pitchers.
SteveC
This team could certainly do worse than Pivetta as their 5th starter. His ability to post has been a breath of fresh air for this pitching staff
okbud
Sure he is posting good results right now, and may for part of next season. But he always comes back to earth in time and turns in awful start after awful start. Get a 2024 from him and say goodbye.
Jake Biggar
Give Brayan Bello a slighty smaller Spencer Strider extension NOW. Even at Strider money I’d be happy. He’s the first home grown, solid pitcher since Lester. Do it.
Jake Biggar
Also extend Casas while we’re at it. I’m on the train of following the Braves model full speed ahead, even if there will be obvious bumps.
Fever Pitch Guy
Jake – I’m glad you brought up Strider, as he is the only pitcher among the 7 current Braves locked up in longterm contracts. That’s because the Braves realize pitchers are far more risky than position players, especially with all the injuries we’ve seen over the past several years.
But here’s the thing – Before signing that contract, Strider proved he can pitch well for an entire season. His major league numbers:
2.69 ERA
1.000 WHIP
13.6 SO/9
ROY Runnerup
Now compare that to Bello:
4.37 ERA
1.456 WHIP
7.9 SO/9
Didn’t receive any ROY votes
Lets see if Bello can put up Strider numbers next year before giving him a Strider contract.
DBH1969
@FPG. Here you make a very good point. It is very risky signing pitching long term. We only have to look at our current team now.
I don’t want to give the impression that I am apposed to signing players early to long term contract. I just think you need to do it before Arb. I would wait until right after Arb 1, if not during, to see what the money looks like.
We have these guys pre-arb for 2024, 2025, 2026. 3 years to see what they really have, and the same 3 years to see if a body part falls off.
Trollfree
LET ME PUT SOME PERSPECTIVE TO YOUR COMMENTS!!!
Here are the PRE-ARB players, their age, the year they are eligible for Free Agency, the age the player will be when they become a Free Agent and their current salary.
You guys are extremely early in offering long term contracts to PRE-ARB players If a player can become a FA in 2030 why offer him a long term contract in 2023 or 2024? It’s far more prudent to wait and make sure he’s a stud then offer him the big deal in 2027 which is 3 years before he becomes a free agent. Nobody should be talking about long term deals to any of these guys.

There are 20 players listed here as PRE-ARB. That is half the 40 man roster. These players cost less than $20MM leaving over $210MM to spend on the other 20 players!!! Ownership has shown a willingness to pay up to the CAP so the new GM has lots of CAP room.
Raising these pre-arb salaries is bad business. These players need to prove their worth conclusively to get an early long-term contract. Most of these players have 7 years of control thanks to changes in the CBA. The keepers deserve contracts mid way through the 7 years if they have proven themselves.
Casas, Bello and others who did well in 2023 need to show they can repeat it to get the big payday. 2027 should be the target year for those that prove themselves with FA dates of 2030.
DBH1969
@Troll. Spot on, man. Awesome post. Most if these guys are not even free agents until 2030. No need to talk to these guys until 2027. Silly waste of money.
Fever Pitch Guy
DBH – So we are all in agreement. Bello will ask for a longterm contract, but he shouldn’t get one yet unless it’s a true bargain.
I knew we’d all come together on the same page as we drink beer and eat pizza together!
Trollfree
Fever – The Pre-Arb years are under control and inexpensive (under $1MM per year). LT contracts should never include those years. All these guys have four years of Pre-Arb so the new GM has lots of time to decide who gets the big contract and who gets moved for the betterment of the team.
The White Sox paid Moncada big bucks $70MM for 5 years in his first year of arbitration. Based on his pay at the time and his performance, they over paid him by at least $20MM by guessing he was going to be better than he actually was. $20MM over 5 years isn’t a big mistake but it shows that even if you wait until Arbitration begins to offer the big deal, it’s still not a guarantee that it’s cheaper for the club in the long run.
20 guys costing less than $20MM in total on a 40 man roster. That’s a lot to be excited about for the new GM, even with the albatross contracts of Devers, Yoshida and Story. Smart moves and this team can compete again.
DBH1969
Ya, man. I believe Casas, Bello, and the other young guns have real potential. But Bello hit the wall again, in this, his sophomore year. I am not concerned with his pitching. Hitters adjusted and he adjusted to it with good results. But I want to see him dominate for at least 150 innings. And Casas not only hit his freshmen year wall, but hurt his shoulder to boot. Maybe he should avoid 5 gallon paint pails and use an inflatable beach ball instead lol.
And since the group of us was named the new POBO, can we agree Arb 1 is when we throw around money?
Fever Pitch Guy
DBH – The bursitis is a mystery and a bit of a concern. Normally with an injury it’s revealed what play caused it, but nothing has been said about how Casas sustained the injury. It’s not like he plays a position that requires a lot of throwing or diving. The dude played in just 132 games, the most in his professional career. Cora made it seem like it could be a chronic thing, all the more reason why longterm extensions should be approached with caution.
And yeah I’m fine with giving out longterm extensions just prior to Arb1, as long as the years and dollars are reasonable and the player has performed well with no health issues.
DBH1969
It is very possible that he has a minor strain but the Sox knew they were out of it and he had hit the rookie wall, so used it as an excuse to just rest him until spring.
Who knows. Not like you can trust what you hear from the FO these days
miltpappas
Llovera imploded again. Cora will probably demand he be extended and that the Sox reach out to Kike this winter. #firecora
Fever Pitch Guy
milt – If the O’s weren’t hungover Friday, the Sox would have probably lost then too.
Today will be huge, if they win they will have an identical record to last year.
DBH1969
@Milt. Hey man, show some respect. Cora will obviously have Llovera start game 2 next year right behind Sale! Trust in the 3-peat, man. Cora’s plan for 3 high draft picks in a row is well under way.
Fever Pitch Guy
DBH – Now don’t be silly … we all know Cora won’t start Sale on Opening Day ;O)
Remember this year when Cora refused to start Sale on Opening Day because he thought Sale would be “too emotional” to pitch that game? Yeah that Cora is an absolute genius, much smarter than everyone else in the room.
Still one of the greatest trivia questions: “Who started Opening Day 2023 for the Boston Red Sox?”
Answer: Corey Kluber
Occams_hairbrush
Why are you so obsessed with this subject? It’s totally irrelevant.
If Llovera is on the team next year, and he won’t be, complain then..
TooToughToScuffle
I hate to be the guy with personal anecdotes, I haven’t even watched since I cut cable in July. The highlight of the season was either monster seats or Chaim being fired. But I remember early Bello and I wasn’t impressed, especially a game I went to very early on where he got absolutely rocked like everything was a rocket. Can’t we wait to give him an extension? Pivetta also doesn’t overly impress me. I think the stats somewhat back up my gut feelings. Maybe Chaim would extend 4 ERA guys into infinity but I don’t think its competitive. These are guys who blow games wide open and are really erratic, particularly pivetta.
Occams_hairbrush
Wait, so you don’t want them to extend Bello. because you went to a game early in the season and he didn’t do well?
TooToughToScuffle
Fair criticism bro. But you should have seen this nonsense. He got shelled. It would leave an impression on you too. And it wasn’t the last time.
olmtiant
No extensions for anybody till we bring back Brais and make him our closer!!! I figure 3 years $65 should do it… any smart GM we bring in would agree… biggest fear… Cashman gets to him first!!!

Surprised there isn’t an article about this yet
Rest in Paradise Tim Wakefield.

Cohen told Tim Britton and other reporters that Stearns made the decision to fire Showalter. “When you bring in a president of baseball ops, they’re entitled to bring in their own people….It became clear [Stearns] wanted to go in a different direction. That was his right, and I gave him that right,” Cohen said.
